Chapter 19

Naraku fingered the bracelets in his hand. The quality was amazing, even he hadn't expected something of this caliber. It would suit his needs quite nicely. One would never think of the power that the gold bands were capable of holding until you saw them in use. The smith had certainly outdone himself. He would be well rewarded once he was finished with the Miko.

Naraku thought about the preparations he still needed to do. It would be a few days yet before he was ready to go through the well and begin his hunt to see if the girl was still alive. He contemplated taking Kagura and Kanna with him. Kanna he might have use for, considering her ability with her mirror. It would aid him in his search.

Kagura on the other hand might be better suited to staying behind. He knew how desperately she wanted to be free of him. He would give her the opportunity in a fashion. She would remain behind and maintain his castle, keeping it ready for he would have need of a place to stay when he made his way to the future after all. She would have five hundred years to wait, anticipating the day he would return. Knowing that she could not leave the castle grounds for he would bind her there with a spell.

His plans were working out perfectly. Soon, very soon he would begin stage two and the lovely little miko he so desired would be his.

***************************************************************** ****

“Wow.”

It was the only word Kagome could think of when she saw Kurama before her. She recognized him immedietly of course, how could someone possibly forget him? Kurama smiled gently, he was used to these sort of reactions after all. He had put up with them for years, however he already knew that Kagome was not going to melt into a puddle in front of him.

“It is nice to meet you Kagome.”

“It's nice to meet you as well Shuichi. I must say this is a rather…. Odd situation we have found ourselves in.”

“It is quite odd I agree.”

Kagome was at a loss of what to say. Shuichi seemed polite enough and she knew Youko was there just under the surface but she couldn't help but feel slightly uncomfortable. She was certain Shuichi was more than likely feeling the same thing as well since he wasn't exactly relaxed.

“So how long have I been here anyway?”

“It's only been three days, you're recover has come along quite nicely considering how badly injured you were.”

“My family must be worried sick by now. Normally I would have checked in with them by now.”

Kurama knew that she was most likely right. The few hours that he had spent in the company of her mother had shown him exactly how close knit of a family that they were. It had been necessity that had prevented him from calling her mother to let her know her daughter was okay. It was best that she just assume Kagome was still in the past hunting shards instead of the truth that her daughter hung on the brink of death. Now that Kagome was doing much better they could contact her family and let them know what was going on.

However Youko was also torn about doing this. He knew her family had every right to know what was going on with their daughter but what would they do once they knew what had happened? It was a very real chance that she would insist that Kagome come home. There was no way in hell he was going to be separated from his mate unless it was absolutely necessary. But how would her mother react to that news and his determination to stay by her daughters side. It wasn't something they could put off much longer however. Kagome's strength was slowly returning to her, there was no reason to keep her whereabouts from her family.

“If you wish you can call your mother. I'm sure she is going to want to know where you are.”

Kagome thought about it. She really wished she could see her again, she wanted to give into the tears she kept hidden and cry on her mothers shoulder. She loved Inuyasha as a son, the news of his death would upset her as well. But she also knew that if she called her it would not stay a phone conversation, her mother would demand to know where she was. And she would likely wish to come over. She didn't know how Kurama would feel about her having visitors in his home. And how long would it be before she had to go home?

The thought of going home was appealing but saddened her at the same time. The emotional bonds between her and Youko had already begun to form and she knew that she would miss him if he wasn't there with her. He had promised that he would never leave her. How would they cope if she was the one that had to leave him? Even if it was only temporary.

She didn't believe her mother would object too strongly to the fact that she was a mated woman seeing as the circumstances behind it but she was not under any illusions that her mother would permit her to continue staying unsupervised in the same house as him until their union was made formal. Kagome could picture her mother's reaction now, planning out the upcoming wedding. Which came to another interesting question. Just because Youko had mated to her, what sort of relation did that give her with Shuichi? It was enough to give a person a headache.

Kurama watched her curiously, the emotions playing openly across her face. There was warmth and caring followed by despair and longing and finally ending with confusion. More than once they wished for Hiei's thought sensing abilities. She was probably worried about same things that they were, none of the three of them knew how the future was going to play out. Her soft voice caught his attention once more.

“I'm not exactly sure how to ask this.”

They both looked at her and took note of the blush that was spreading on her face. Whatever question it was that she had was obviously uncomfortable for her to ask. He reached out and took her hand in his own at Youko's prompting while he opened up there connection some so that Youko could feel the touch of her skin on his own.

“Just ask whatever is on your mind. I'll answer if I can.”

“Well, I understand how Youko and I are mates and now I understand how you are both two entities in one body so to speak so….”

“You're wondering what that makes us.”

Kagome was glad that she didn't have to voice the question herself. She nodded shyly and waited to see what his answer would be. She could have never anticipated being mated to a Kitsune but the added thought of Shuichi there was enough to make her mind spin. She wasn't sure if it would fall in the realms of cheating if anything were to ever happen between her and the man that was still holding her hand. Or would it be expected for her to have a relationship with him as well as Youko. She just didn't know what to expect.

“Well, to be honest with you Kagome this isn't exactly how I had planned on finding someone to spend the rest of my life with but I cannot say as I regret it. You know how Youko feels about you and we both realize that it will be a while before you can return the strength of those feelings. We are willing to give you all the time you need for that. Which brings us to you and myself. I won't deny that I am attracted to you, and I am beginning to have feelings of affection for you.”

Kagome could only sit and stare into his eyes as he spoke. Somehow she knew where this was going when he spoke of his own feelings.

“Our situation is rather unique as it goes. Now that Youko has bonded to you the likelyhood of me ever finding someone for myself is slim to none, for no one would be happy in that instance. Youko refuses to be a part of anything that does not involve you and I do not blame him in the least. Just as I am certain that if I were to find someone else you would be unhappy knowing that your mate was involved in a round about way with another am I correct?”

She nodded, if there was one thing about her it was that she was completely faithful. She would never turn to another since she was now in a relationship with Youko. She would expect complete faithfulness from him as well. It would tear her heart out to know that he was involved with another.

“So the only thing I can propose to you at this point as we take our relationship one day at a time. I do not object to a relationship with you and I am likely the only person Youko would ever consider allowing to join in the union the two of you have formed and that is only because we are what we are. If it is not objectionable to you I ask your permission to be able to court you.”

`Damn right, anyone else that looks at her in that direction is going to lose their life and quickly.'

`I know Youko and I can just imagine that if I were to look elsewhere for a girlfriend I would never hear the end of it from you.'

`You're right, I have no desire to sit in on you and another female. Besides who could possibly be a better mate for the two of us than Kagome?'

`You might have a point there.'

`I know I do now pay attention, she just gave you her approval.'

Kurama ceased the internal discussion they were having and turned his attention back to the girl who was looking at them with concern. She'd eventually get used to the fact that he lost track of what was going on when he started talking to Youko.

“How do you propose we explain this to my mother?”

“Honestly I have no idea, you know her far better than I do. I've only met her once.”

Kagome almost asked when he had met her mother but thought better of it for the moment, she didn't want to know. It was obvious to her that they had been watching her for a little while at any rate. Normally that would have bothered her but for some reason it didn't in this instance. Perhaps it was the bond's influence. She wasn't certain though.

“I have to tell her what happened to the others. That's going to give her the opening to ask about you and Youko you know?”

“And your mother knows about demons of course so it will be easier to explain what exactly we are. I see no need to withhold that information from her. She's likely to find out sooner or later anyway. Sooner is preferable to later, then we don't have to deal with explaining why we hid that information from her.”

“I think that is for the best really, although I'm not certain what my mother is going to say to us being mated. She is going to want a wedding, but I'm not certain how Youko feels about that human custom.”

`If it makes her mother happy then I would do it, though that does present a problem. I have no record here in the human realm since I am not human. We would either need to go to Koenma and have him forge the records or you would need to be the one to do it Red.'

`If necessary I will be the one to do it Youko, don't worry about that part of it.'

“That is fine Kagome, I don't have any objections to that and neither does Youko although with him being a demon it would be me and you getting married to satisfy your mother if that is what you and her both wish.”

“You make it sounds like it's a unwanted obligation that you're being forced to do.”

Kagome teased him, feeling slightly better that she would be able to make her mother happy in that respect. Probably a few others since now there was no way she was staying in the past when this jewel business was over and done with.

“Not at all Kagome, please don't think that. I already told you that I'm beginning to feel some feelings for you.”

Kurama totally missed the teasing tone that had been in Kagome's voice though Youko didn't. He loved the fact that his mate had an obvious playful side to her. When the seriousness of everything wore off he knew they would be able to have fun together. He was looking forward to that day.

“I was teasing you silly.”

“The next question is where do you intend on staying until this wedding takes place? I'll warn you now that Youko does not intend on letting you out of his sight for any real length of time. His instincts won't allow it and I seriously doubt I can contain him in that instance if someone were to try to forcibly separate the three of us.”

“I'm not sure of the answer to that. I'm certain my mother will try to be understanding though I'm not sure how she will take to living arrangements. I doubt she will allow me to live here with you to be honest. She might allow you to stay at the shrine with us though she will insist on separate rooms.”

“We figured as much. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Would you like to call your mother now?”

“Yes I would though I warn you she is likely to want to come over. And there is a good chance she's going to want to take me back home.”

“Well then in that case let me pack a bag. Youko just informed me that if you're leaving we are going with you even if it means that we are sleeping in a tree.”

Kagome had to giggle at that, it sounded like something she would expect from him. Kurama brought her a cordless phone and disappeared into the bedroom to begin packing an overnight bag. He wasn't exactly relishing the thought of staying in a tree no matter how comfortable with the thought Youko was but if it was necessary he would do so.

The phone rang three times before the line was picked up. Her brother was the one to answer the phone, apparently the fact that she was calling was enough to almost send the child into hysterics. The only thing she could make out through his shouting was her name.

Moments later she heard her mothers voice on the other line, the older woman sounded like she was on the verge of tears. What had gotten them so upset that everyone was so upset? Surely they couldn't have seen her when she came out of the well. They would have immedietly taken her to the hospital if they had and she never would have met Kurama.

“Mom calm down I can't understand you.”

“Kagome where are you? We've been worried sick these past few days! We saw the blood coming from the well and searched all over for you. We thought you might have died or something! None of the hospitals had any record of you being admitted.”

“Mom I'm fine, I'm over at a friend's house. I'm sorry I couldn't call you before now but something has happened.”

The line went deadly quiet for a long moment and she feared that they had been cut off. However her mother's voice came back through after a few moments. It was strangely calm, as if she were expecting the worst.

In fact she was expecting the worst. The amount of blood they had found should have killed the girl and Inuyasha had never come through the well which could only mean one thing. Inuyasha was dead and her daughter was somehow injured. She could not have known though that it was injuries done by Inuyasha's own claws.

“He's dead isn't he?”

Silent tears made their way down her face at her mothers words. She couldn't find her voice to answer the question that was asked but her silence was more than enough of an answer. The hanyou that she had been looking forward to welcoming into the family as the husband to her daughter was dead and there was no way to bring him back. Kagome heard the muffled sobs coming through the phone. What she wouldn't give to be able to spare her family this pain as well. Souta would take it especially hard with how he had looked up to Inuyasha.

Kurama was almost finished packing when he smelled the tears that Kagome was shedding, though she made no sound. Packing could wait, she needed them now. He made his way out to the living room once more and sat down beside her wrapping his arms around her waist. He held her close as she attempted to compose herself so she could continue the conversation. Eventually though Kurama took the phone from her and spoke directly with her mother. He gave her the address to his home and said goodbye. She would be there shortly. Until then he comforted the broken hearted girl in his arms, giving her the shoulder to cry on that she so desperately needed.

Author's Notes: Somehow I think this is going to go beyond the thirty chapters I had planned. Eh well, if you think I'm going entirely too slow let me know and I will see what I can do to speed it up some. Although I stand firm, lemons won't be coming until near the end of the story. We're getting near 50 Reviews on AFF! Go Me!

Reviewer Responses:

Seishini'jousha: I've considered it but I think it's an actual issue with the computer and not the email server. It just won't let me type anything at all period when I try to reply or compose an email. It drives me insane. As to your questions: Hiei's smell was all over her because they were in physical contact for a few hours while he carried her to the well. Something so simple as a hug would not cover her but extended contact on the other hand would. Naraku is about ready to come through the well and begin his evil plot to defile the shrine maiden. For the sexual tension I wanted to do something a bit different with this fic than my others since Kag and Inu had been in a perfectly happy relationship until his death. As they get closer the tension will begin to build. Though I only anticipate one or two lemons for this particular story. I'm going to do my best to portray Kuwabara correctly but it might be a bit difficult sense I haven't seen the show and I can only go by what I have read. Unfortunately as you said most of it is very unflattering toward him even though I have heard he isn't exactly like most people portray him. I promise to do my best with his character. Hope this helps :-) Thank you for reviewing!

Whirleeq: I seriously considered making it so Kurama had one soul but I love the conflicting personalities when you have the two of them together and it helped develop the story a bit more so I went for the split. Even if it does give me a headache from time to time lol And yep you read correctly though that fic probably won't be for a long time coming. I've read the fic you mentioned, it was the one that gave me the idea in fact. I adored that particular pairing though I was saddened to learn there isn't likely to be a sequel. I think it would be interesting to see how the reincarnation thing would work out with the way it was set up. Anywho I hope this was another enjoyable chapter, I just love playing with Kagome's emotions. It's just too much fun.

Ox King: Lemon pie ahead and fairly shortly if I can keep it to the thirty chapters I wanted. Don't get your hopes up though, you see how much I was able to drag the other stories out and how they will continue to be once I get them updated lol We're starting to get into the over protectiveness now, Poor Kurama being forced to sleep in a tree. Perhaps it would be best if he let Youko out but then I can almost guarantee Youko would find a way into her bedroom even if it was against house rules.

Xoulblade: I could give it a shot, you'd need to link me up to your story and let me know what sort of help I could give you. I'm surprised my cliffhangers haven't been the death of me yet though 0.0

MoonlightdemonKita: hehe I'm sure Cerebus would have fun with Monkey boy though it would mean I would have to think up another OC for a villain then lol Kaemon already has his hands full in Whispers so I don't think I could pull him into this fic.
inuyuyu_15: If I'm not careful I'm gonna get a stomach ache here, I just ate a brownie lol Kurama might have a hard time keeping Youko in check around Yusuke, I don't see his disposition improving much anytime soon lol

Arbor: Scared ya did I? I did that on purpose, because I'm evil mwahaha. Next chapter we get the fun of explaining to mom. Oh joy! And you just know she is going to want to meet Youko before she agrees to anything. Wonder how she is going to handle his arrogance *Snickers*

bloodbunny: Sorry about that, it's like a curse of sorts. I just cannot help myself for some reason ;-)

Rabid: I can see that and them immedietly calling up the men in white coats. The Doctor will see you now. Although I'm going to try and put some humor into it, just because the thought of Naraku coming to the future with no warning on what to expect it just too damned good of an opportunity to pass up. You know, the thought of being able to tolerate the taste of cough drops is scary to me. Whenever I have to take those it takes everything in my power to keep from immedietly spitting it out. Blech! But if it makes you feel better then it's worth it. Could you imagine the fun of writing a fight scene between Youko and Yusuke? Hmmm sweaty guys.. Maybe end up with Yusuke shirtless. Hard to do the same with Youko but still. Mmmm pardon me while I drool here for a moment. I'm eagerly looking forward to that second chapter, you have me hooked already!

Thanks for the reviews everyone!
