Chapter 20

They waited in silence, both seated on the couch. Kurama was wrapped around Kagome holding her as closely as possible. She had just hung up the phone not more than five minutes ago. Her mother was coming, the immediate future extremely uncertain. Kurama refused to let her go and Youko was in complete agreement with him. Not that Kagome wanted to be let go anyway, she needed someone to lean on.

The minutes dragged on until they finally heard a knock on the door. Kurama knew that he needed to get up and answer it but Youko was fighting him. He did not want to release the girl, who knew when he would be able to hold her in his arms again. When the second knock was heard Kagome sighed and slid out of his embrace. She could have whimpered at the loss of contact but there was no avoiding it. It was probably her mother, it was time to explain what had happened. She was not looking forward to this.

Kurama stood and went to the door. He knew who it was immedietly, he recognized the scent of her mother. At least it wasn't Yusuke coming back with questions he reflected. Youko's comments on what he thought of that possibility were not worth repeating. Steeling himself for the encounter he opened the door.

Mrs. Higurashi looked expectantly as the door opened however she was not expecting the man who answered it. She had been under the impression that this young man did not know her daughter so why then was Kagome at his house? It made her slightly uneasy but she decided to hold off on her questions until she made sure her daughter was okay.

Kurama invited her into his home, noticing the unease that played on the older woman's face. He was sure that seeing him again under these circumstances was probably quite a surprise. As she followed him into the house he watched Kagome's reaction. Something inside the girl snapped as she launched herself off of the couch and into her mother's arms. He observed there reunion quietly, unwilling to intrude on their moment unless the situation warranted it. Both he and Youko knew that there was no threat to the girl so for the moment they were content with the way things were.

She took note of her daughters appearance, evaluating what sort of condition she was in. From the amount of blood that they had found she was surprised that Kagome was up and moving about so well even if she was still covered in bandages. She didn't know if it was her daughters power that had helped or not but whatever the reason was, she was thankful for it.

“God Kagome we were so worried about you. We saw the blood in the well house and thought the worst!”

“I'm fine now Mom, almost as good as new.”

Kagome led her mother over to the couch where they could sit down. Her legs were still a bit weak and she felt no need to worry her mother any more than she had been. She should have figured that there would be evidence that she had come home and that her family would be worried. All she could do now is try to explain and make it up to them for her lack of thoughtfulness.

“At least your safe now. Tell me what happened Kagome.”

“They are dead Mom. Inuyasha, Sango, Miroku, Shippou and Kirara. They're all dead.”

She had suspected it before, based on Kagome's reaction but it was now out in the open. There was no denying it, no fooling herself into believing she was mistaken. She knew how hard this must be on her daughter, she had been close to each and every one of them. They were practically all members of the family. Even if she herself had only met Inuyasha.

She thought back to the time that she first saw him. He had been uncivilized to say the least but she could easily see what it was that her daughter saw in him. She also noticed the subtle display of his own feelings. The gentle look in his eyes as he watched Kagome when she wasn't looking. The guilt that passed over him when he said something unnecessarily harsh and Kagome stormed away from him. He might have hid his feelings from himself and her daughter but they were painfully obvious to everyone else. And now he was gone.

“Some witch cast a spell on Inuyasha. He wasn't in his right mind anymore when he attacked us. I ended up killing him Mom. It's my fault he is dead.”

She hugged Kagome closer to her as the girl wept openly. She offered all the comfort that she could to the distraught girl all the while wishing there was something that she could do to take the pain from her. She had never expected that it would have been Kagome that killed him, she had thought it was that monster that they were constantly fighting.

Her mother turned and looked over to Kurama, silently appraising him. It would seem that somehow he was responsible for caring for her daughter but that did not explain how he knew her in the first place. She wanted answers, she needed to know exactly what he was to her daughter considering she had been staying here unsupervised with him.

“What is your part in all of this?”

Kurama was expecting this question. He only hoped that she wasn't going to hit the roof when she found out they were mated. Youko had ideas of just taking Kagome away if her mother decided to separate them. He knew it wouldn't be so easy as that though.

“It's complicated Mom.”

“Well, I've got time. You can take all you need in explaining it to me.”

Kagome looked to Kurama cautiously. This mainly had to do with him and what he was, therefore it was his story to tell. She didn't want to reveal anything about him that he did not want known. He understood what the look was for. Knowing that her mother knew about demons would help greatly in this case. He saw no reason to conceal information about Youko from her.

`I think the best way to start is by showing her Youko.'

`I think your right in this instance.'

`You will be on your best behavior will you not?'

`Of course, what do you think I'm going to do? Pick Kagome up and ravish her in front of her mother? I think not.'

`Knowing you somehow…. Nevermind that.. Don't kidnap her either, you'll give her mother fits.'

`Fine, fine, let me out already.'

Mrs. Higurashi sat staring wide eyed at Kurama as he allowed Youko to come out. Kagome watched as well, she would never get used to his transformations. She wondered how her mother was going to take this, the only contact she had with demons was meeting Inuyasha.

“Are you a hanyou like Inuyasha was?”

“No Ma'am, I am a Spirit Kitsune. My name is Youko Kurama, you've already met my human counterpart Shuichi.”

“So, does that mean you are both human and Demon then?”

“Indeed it does, though the explanation as to how that occurred is lengthy. For now this will have to be sufficient. Just know that we are two beings sharing the same body in a manner of speaking.”

“Okay, I can accept that for now. My daughter always did meet the most interesting of people. Now, how do you know her?”

Youko thought about exactly how much he should tell her. Certainly she wouldn't appreciate finding out that he had in essence been stalking her daughter, learning all he could about the girl. Perhaps it would be best if he began the explanation starting from when he found her in the woods.

“Normally my human counterpart is the one that is dominant because of the difficulties that would arise of explaining what I am. However on occasion when the circumstances warrant it I take over. That was the case on the night your daughter came out of the well although it was fortuitous that it worked out that way. Since I was out our senses were greatly enhanced and we could smell the blood that covered Kagome. We went to investigate of course and found her.”

She seemed to be taking his explanation rather well at that particular point but they had not yet gotten to the sticky parts of the story yet. She had to understand how badly her daughter had been injured in order for her to accept the fact that they were now joined forever. He disliked the idea of scaring the older woman but she must understand the severity of the situation.

Yusuke watched Hiei dart off into the distance and looked to Kuwabara. How had he of all people picked up on that weird fucking energy while he himself had missed it? He decided it was because he had been too worked up over seeing Youko again. Still, it rankled him that Kuwabara had been the one to sense it.

“So what did she feel like to you?”

Kuwabara thought about it for a moment. He had been trying to decide exactly what the energy was since they had left. He had felt it a few times before, when he had visited a shrine but never did it have the strength that this girl possessed.

“Holy Energy Urameshi, whoever she is she has a lot of it.”

Yusuke scowled at that little revelation. Holy energy? Just what the fuck had Kurama gotten himself into? If it was for a roll in the sack he certainly chose a dangerous bed companion. And this was the girl he had chosen for a mate?

Hiei had told them all basically to mind there own damned business but Yusuke couldn't let it go. Not when a teammate was playing with fire like he was. Like it or not he had to speak to Koenma. He would know what to do about this situation and could make the decission as to whether or not Kurama had lost his fucking mind.

He pulled the communicator out of his jacket pocket. Kuwabara looked at him strangely, as if he were nuts for dragging the Spirit world into this mess. He had seen how serious Youko was about this girl. Yusuke was just handing himself over on a platter to the Kitsune by involving Koenma.

“Urameshi I don't think that's a wise idea.”

“Shut it Kuwabara. Koenma needs to know about this.”

“It's your funeral. Again.”

Yusuke ignored him as he opened the communicator and scowled when Botan's happy face appeared on it. Normally her appearance wasn't so bad but right at the moment he wasn't exactly in the best of moods.

“Something I can do for you Yusuke?”

“I need to speak to Koenma. Now.”

“Yeah, sure Yusuke. Just a moment.”

Her face disappeared and after a few moments Koenma's took her place. He was of course in his child form seeing no need to expend the extra energy to appear older. Curiosity was clearly evident as he looked at the Spirit Detective, it was unusual for Yusuke to contact him.

“Is there a problem Yusuke?”

“Yeah, there is. A couple of them actually and they all deal with Kurama.”

Koenma was concerned, anything that involved Kurama enough to alarm Yusuke was obviously a problem. He opened a portal and Yusuke stepped through it arriving directly into his office. It was not a common occurance for any of the team to go see Koenma directly, he usually preferred dealing with them through Botan and the use of video tapes. He was far too busy usually to deal with them personally, however this instance he would make an exception.

“Tell me.”

“Fine. For starters for some reason Kurama has let Youko out.”

Koenma felt like cursing. What the hell was Kurama doing allowing the thief to come out. Hadn't he specifically warned him not to do that? For some reason Kurama had ignored his order, but before he could figure out what to do about it Yusuke continued.

“And it seems the Fox has taken a mate. A Human Mate no less.”

“He What!”

One of the first things he had attempted to drill into the entire teams head was that the human population was to remain unaware of the fact that there were demons. They had taken great pains to make sure the knowledge of demons was restricted to legends.

“Yeah that's what I said. Kuwabara said the girl has holy energy, a lot of it. Figured you should know about it. You'd be able to tell if she was a threat to the team and what to do about it if she was.”

“Did you get a look at who this girl is?”

“Nope, Youko damned near took my head off when I showed up at his house. He wouldn't let any of us near her. Hiei knows what's going on and refuses to tell me.”

This was obviously distressing news to the Demigod, he furiously started punching in keys on his keyboard. Yusuke waited, wanting to know what Koenma had to say if anything. He had been known for withholding information from them before but he would be damned if he would walk around in the dark on this one.

“How in the hell did he meet her and why is her spirit energy so weak now?”

“Weak? What do you mean weak? She seemed strong enough to me and Kuwabara!”

Koenma refused to answer him, instead he continued staring at the screen on his desk. He was silently observing the conversation that Youko, Kagome, and her mother were having. He would have his answers one way or another. And then he would deal with the kitsune as he saw fit.

***************************************************************** *****

“You must understand how severely injured your daughter was when we found her. There was little hope of her surviving, the blood loss alone should have killed her. It would have if I hadn't found her, which leads us to explaining exactly how I had to heal her.”

“Shouldn't her energy been able to heal her injuries?”

“I was too drained mother, that and I had to take pain killers for a previous energy. Youko did what he had to do to save me. Please try to understand this when he tells you how he did it.”

Youko got the distinct impression that they were being watched somehow as did Shuichi but they couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from. They couldn't sense Hiei anywhere but that wouldn't necessarily mean anything. He had gotten extremely skilled at concealing his presence, even from them.

“Okay, so how did you manage to save her?”

“I had to perform a specific blood bond with your daughter. Her power is the type that under normal circumstances would destroy any kind of help I could have offered her. It was only through this bond that I was able to meld my energy into her own to save her.”

“What does this bond entail?”

“I had to make her my mate.”

Youko waited for her reaction, unsure of how she would take the news. For the longest moment she just sat there, unblinking. Her daughter had mated? To a kitsune? She wasn't exactly sure how she felt about the news she had just received. How had the blood bond been performed? Surely he would not have taken daughter when she was so gravely injured would he?

“How?”

“Don't worry Mrs. Higurashi, the bond has not been consummated yet. It was only matter of exchanging blood. The bond can be finished at a later date. But your daughter and myself are now bound to each other through this life and any future ones we might have.”

Reviewer Responses:

Ralina: I think that having Youko be the dormant one is probably going to be the way that I go with it although Koenma's help isn't to be ruled out just yet. One thing is for certain though, Hiei won't be heading back to the past since he's still running around back then even if it isn't in the area. Kurama's going to have to deal with it, without the help of his “current” partners.

Xoulblade: I'll help out in any way I can. If you want to email me feel free. I'll respond when I can get to a computer that will cooperate with me. And PLEASE do not scare me like that. Not another 50 chapter story. The way things are going the others are likely going to sit like they are until this story is finished lol

Mija: I'm going to start making sure to hand out a supply of tissues at the beginning of each chapter I think. I kinda feel bad for Youko at this point. Imagine trying to explain to someone's parents that you basically forced a mating on their kid. Even if she did agree she was delusional. He's probably just waiting for her to snap and go for him. Anyhow here's one chapter, hopefully a second will be coming before the day is out.

InukuramaRmine: I'm grateful for each and every review that you can give me. I was beginning to wonder if I had lost the majority of my FF readers lol Thanks for reviewing :-)

Arbor: *Glomps you* Glad that you think so, I worry about how it would look if I were to speed it up. Even if this might end up at 50 chapters. EEP! I meant to throw Naraku into the mix this chapter but it didn't work out that way. Beh, gives me something to concentrate on in the next chapter I suppose as well as watching Kagome's mother hit the ceiling. She's not going to be all smiles and say that's fine dear. *Snickers* Poor Youko.

Bloodbunny: I know exactly what You mean by that, although my computer is right next to my bed. Gets me in trouble when stories I am looking forward to reading get updated all at once. Then I don't know whether to read, sleep, or write.

Shabopo: Naraku always has been a bit of a weird one to me. Even his name which had me pondering the other night. If the R's aren't pronounced as R's but instead as L's (Such as Kirara's name) then why is Naraku pronounced the way it is? It's been driving me insane thinking about that lately. I'm glad you enjoyed the way Kuwabara was portrayed, I'm doing my best not to make him look like a complete idiot though he might have his moments here and there lol

crazy-punk-gurl: If you could, please email me the information on the three kings and I can see how I can work it into the story. It might fit in perfectly with the upcoming confrontation between Kurama and Koenma. I appreciate the help! I'm not looking towards Reincarnation really, more of like a revival of the dead though I have to think of the excuse as to why they are being brought back. I already have Kuronue lined up and ready to go.

Rabid: That is a nice mental image is it not? Hopefully it's enough of one to make you feel a bit better. Makes me think of drawing that little mental image out to drool over for a bit. I'm trying to make Kagome's mother as realistic as possible. Even in some of my other fics I made her entirely too easy going and accepting, not so in this one. She's going to react how I would imagine any other mother to react. You did what to my Baby?!?! Fun Fun.

As always Thanks to everyone for reviewing. Until next time!
