Commitments Made In Blood

Chapter 21

 

 

For a moment she wasn't sure if she had heard him right. Bound through this life and the next? Was that even possible? And if it was, then why would he have done such a thing if he hadn't already known Kagome? Somehow it just wasn't adding up for her.

 

 

“While I am grateful to you that you saved my daughter I have to question why you would do such a thing. And what exactly do you mean by bound through this life and any others you might have?”

 

 

Kagome was slightly curious on this as well. The few talks she had with Sango she had never mentioned the full implications behind demon bonding. Not that they had gone into any great detail or anything, she just didn't figure that Sango would leave something that important out.

 

 

“I meant exactly what I said. Let me explain. It has to do with exactly what I am. I am a Spirit Kitsune. With our race the level of the bond greatly depends on what clan we are a part of. It ties in greatly with out power levels, Spirit Kitsune are one of the more powerful of our race. When our kind take a mate it is for life. Once cannot continue to live without the other. So tightly bound are our souls that the bond continues on even into the next life. It may take time, but eventually we would find each other again.”

 

 

“You are saying that you're both mated, know next to nothing about each other and are now stuck together for eternity?”

 

 

Kagome could tell her mother was having a hard time coming to terms with this. Curiously though she wondered why she was not having the same issues. Any other person would have long since flipped out over this little tidbit of information but she wasn't. Subconsciously she recognized it was because Youko had given her exactly what she had asked for. She asked him to never leave her, that is exactly what he had done. They were in essence inseparable, it was comforting to her.

 

 

“I am. One cannot exist without the other.”

 

 

“This is a lot to take, I do hope you realize this.”

 

 

“We know Mom, it's going to take some getting used to.”

 

 

“That's one way to put it Kagome. Tell me Youko, is this a prerequisite of all demon bonding or something specific to kitsune?”

 

 

“Mostly it is specific to certain clans of Kitsune although there are other kinds of demons that similarly bind themselves to their mates. Dragon Youkai for example. Most though form temporary relationships at best. Some such as dogs tend to form packs, they usually don't tie themselves down to one mate.”

 

 

While Kagome did not doubt his word, she had a hard time imagining Inuyasha taking multiple mates if he had lived. He was fiercely loyal and extremely protective. Perhaps it was something to do with the way his human blood combined with the demon that made him the way he was.

 

 

“And is there no way to break this bond if the two of you decide you aren't right for each other?”

 

 

Youko looked sharply at her when she voiced that question. Was she looking for a possible out for her daughter? He could safely promise her that there was no way in hell he was ever going to let Kagome go. She could put any possible notions of that happening that might be running in her head to rest.

 

 

“If we were not compatible then the power in our blood would not have accepted the bonding and would have fought until the foreign energies were overcome. As I said before, we are willing to take all the time necessary to get to know one another before finishing the ritual.”

 

 

“That's good, because if you think for one moment I'm going to just hand my daughter over to you because you two are bonded you are mistaken. While I appreciate all you have done for her, she is still very young and has been going through a lot these past few years. If you want a serious relationship with her then you must understand that I insist you start slow. How does Shuichi feel about this? I'm assuming he has his own thoughts concerning this entire affair.”

 

 

“Shuichi's thoughts are much like my own. His feelings of affection towards Kagome are growing stronger. Perhaps it will not be too long before they are the same as my own.”

 

 

“Wait! So this means you two intend on sharing my daughter with each other?!”

 

 

Kagome winced at the tone her mother's voice was beginning to reach. This was going to be the part where she was likely to hit the ceiling and she knew it. Youko most certainly did not strike her as the most patient of demons but so far he hadn't let the questioning get to him. However she didn't know how long his patience would last.

 

 

“Mom, please calm down.”

 

 

“Calm down? I did not raise you like this!”

 

 

“Mrs. Higurashi what would you expect of us? We are after all two beings in one body. I assure you that if Shuichi was to want to take his own mate there would be no end to the problems that would ensue. I have no desire to be with anyone other than Kagome and I am certain that she would be most unhappy knowing that I was involved in whatever relationship that Shuichi involved himself in simply because of what we are. I would not hurt Kagome in such a fashion, neither would Shuichi.”

 

 

Mrs. Higurashi was not amused to say the least. Why did Kagome's life have to be so difficult? She had been more than willing to accept Inuyasha but she was unsure about Shuichi, Youko… Hell, whichever you wanted to call him, it still didn't make her the least bit happy. But what could she do really? She could try separating them but somehow she doubted that would work for very long.

 

 

“You are going to have to give me some time to think this over. And you young man are going to have to prove yourself worthy of my daughter.”

 

 

“We intend to Mrs. Higurashi, just give us time is all we ask. We would do anything for her.”

 

 

Somehow she didn't doubt that at all. The fact he had done the bonding at all said that much but he would still need to prove himself further. She suddenly felt very tired, it had been a lot to assimilate in such a short time frame. She stood from the couch and grabbed her purse. Fixing her gaze to her daughter she began to speak as calmly as possible.

 

 

“Kagome it is time you returned home. You look well enough, we can continue your care there. Gather whatever things you have here, we are going home.”

 

 

Kagome looked to Youko with pleading eyes. She couldn't outright refuse her mother and she did indeed want to go home but she didn't want to be without him. However it would be inappropriate for her to ask her mother if he could come with them. It was well within his rights though as her mate to broach the subject.

 

 

“Mrs. Higurashi, I have no objections to Kagome going home. She needs to be with her family. I do ask though that I be allowed to accompany her while she stays at your home. Kagome is still in need of protection since she is injured and she still has the Shikon no Tama. There are demons in this time as you now know. She is not safe.”

 

 

“I cannot allow you to stay with her if that is what you are asking. You may be mated by demon laws but you are not under our human customs. Until such time you cannot stay with my daughter.”

 

 

Youko was rapidly getting annoyed with this discussion but wisely held his temper at Shuichi's insistence. This required a delicate touch to sooth the older woman's ruffled temper.

 

 

“I wasn't suggesting anything inappropriate. I'm merely looking out for her best interest. I am fully capable of handling anything that threatens her. She would also have the added protection of one of my partners that generally tends to remain in the same general location as us. Kagome is already friends with him, they met during her trips to the past.”

 

 

“I'm still not entirely sure, she's been perfectly safe at home before.”

 

 

“That is likely because any threat from demons in the city was taken care of either by myself or my companions. However I would still feel better if I was there to protect her. One way or another I will be there Mrs. Higurashi, my instincts demand I protect her.”

 

 

Kagome raised an eyebrow at how that sounded to her own ears. She certainly hoped he wanted to be there for reasons aside from his instincts. Youko took notice of her look and gave her a gentle smile.

 

 

“Fine, you can stay with us but there will be rules. Break them and I can promise you that you will not like the results. First thing is Kagome's room is off limits, you will not go up there with her unless you have someone else accompanying you. Second is I expect you to act like a gentleman with my daughter, there will not be any excessive displays of affection.”

 

 

“Mom I've been here several days now and even though we are bonded he has yet to kiss me. I don't think you have to worry about that.”

 

 

“Fine, pack what you need. You can sleep in the spare bedroom.”

 

 

Youko smiled and offered her his thanks before giving control back over to Shuichi. They both knew that it was likely that he was going to be the one out for the majority of the time for a while. He was unsure of exactly how much the rest of her family knew about demons. Until he could make a determination of that, it was better to be safe than sorry.

 

 

Kurama picked up the suitcase he had been working on and quickly finished packing a few things. It only took about another five minutes. Soon enough he was ready to go. He took Kagome's hand in his and they followed her mother out the door and into the car.

“This is most disturbing.”

 

 

“Tell me about it. Obviously you know who the girl is so do you care to tell me what the fuck is going on here?”

 

 

“Watch your mouth when speaking to me Yusuke. I'll tell you what I can, it seems that her quest has failed, or at least met a temporary set back. I'll call Kurama in here later to find out exactly what happened.”

 

 

Yusuke paled but said nothing. Kurama was going to be furious with him that he had gone to Koenma but there was nothing to be done about it. He had been right in that this was important, he just hoped that Kurama would forgive him for going straight to the toddler. He wasn't about to sit by and watch his friend get involved in something that could potentially put him in a situation that he couldn't handle.

 

 

“Kurama's mate is a Priestess by the name of Kagome Higurashi. We've been keeping an eye on her the past few years. She is the Guardian of the Shikon no Tama and a time traveler.”

 

 

“Wait the Shikon no Tama? Isn't that only a legend?”

 

 

“No Yusuke, unfortunately for all concerned it is a very real artifact of power that would been better if it had never existed. The legend is greatly based on fact, Kagome is the one who shattered the jewel all those centuries ago. There is a portal on her shrine's property that allows her to travel back to the Feudal Era.”

 

 

“Some Guardian she is if she is the one that broke the damned thing. Why the hell wasn't I informed of this before now?”

 

 

“Because it didn't concern you Yusuke! We were perfectly content monitoring the situation. She had all the help she needed to collect the fragments. Once the jewel is complete we can reevaluate the situation though I must say she is considerably stronger in power than when she first started out. Whatever it was that happened to her though must have taken a serious toll on her if Kurama felt it was necessary to bond themselves to her.”

 

 

“Fine, is she a threat to him?”

 

“No, Kagome is rare in that she is accepting of almost anyone. Demon, Human, or Hanyou. The only way she would be a threat to him is if he attacked her or her family. I don't see him doing that.”

 

 

“So you're not going to interfere then?”

 

 

“As of right now, no. I will bring Kurama in here and find out exactly what happened to her. Until I know what the circumstances behind her injuries are I won't be able to make a decission concerning the next course of action. However if she lost her group of traveling companions there is a possibility that you and the others will be taking there places. Be ready to travel in any case.”

 

 

“No fucking way Koenma. I can't drop everything here to go to the past.”

 

 

“Yusuke if you're needed to go back then you are going. Deal with it.”

 

 

“Just fucking perfect. I can't wait to see how I'm going to explain this one.”

 

 

Hiei stood in the shadows watching their conversation. It was interesting to him that neither one of them had noticed his presence yet. In his opinion it wasn't the explanation on the upcoming trip he should be worrying about.

 

 

“You have other things to worry about instead of that Detective.”

 

 

Koenma and Yusuke both snapped their gazes towards where the cold voice originated from. Yusuke suppressed a groan, he should have figured that Hiei would manage to find out what was going on.

 

 

“Didn't I tell you that Kurama's affairs were none of your concern Detective?”

 

 

“Considering my ass might be going to where there aren't any modern day conveniences I would say it is my concern Hiei.”

 

 

“Perhaps if you had kept your mouth shut you wouldn't be in this predicament now would you. How, I wonder, is Kurama going to take this news that you went to Koenma with news of his mating.”

 

 

“I had every right to know Hiei. I'm disappointed that you didn't come to me with what you knew.”

 

 

Hiei surely thought Koenma had lost his mind at that point in time. Did he really expect that he would betray the Kitsune's confidence? This matter was for Kurama alone to decide who knew. He agreed Koenma was going to need to find out eventually but it was not his place to say anything and Yusuke had been way out of line by coming here.

 

 

“It wasn't my place, it should have been the Fox to bring this up, not the Detective.”

 

 

“Regardless of who brought it to my attention I now know. Is there anything you would like to add to this little meeting? I assume so since you are here.”

Ookami K.: we've begun the tip of the iceberg for Kagome's mom. Things will get more interesting at her home from here on out just because Youko is not going to want to leave Kagome alone and this no interaction unless it's supervised rule isn't going to sit too well for him.

 

 

Xoulblade: I'm more worried for Yusuke at this point. Youko is going to flip his lid I am afraid. Let's hope he doesn't damage Yusuke too greatly. *Wanders away grumbling about fifty chapters* You're probably right on that one.. sigh… lol

 

 

 

Kura-kun's-lovr: Kuronue will come back to you perfect as ever, I must say I am extremely jealous that he is yours. Perhaps he has an equally handsome twin brother I can steal away. Kagome's mom isn't taking this too well but it's going to get worse. I imagine the first nightmare Kagome has and Youko climbing into bed with her. Ummm yeah, fun ahead. I wish as far as the updating goes that I could do something with my other stories. I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion it just isn't going to happen until this story is finished. Writers block is a bitch to deal with. I'm thrilled you like my stories so much, I anxiously await each and every update of your stories :-D Thank you for the added information about Youko, it will help me out tremendously in later chapters when dealing with Naraku… Wherever that evil bastard has ran off to. I think he's the one holding my missing muses for ransom.

 

 

Rabid: I think we are all looking forward to that upcoming fight. I get this insane mental image of the two of them going at each other with Hiei and Kuwabara on the sidelines with bowls of popcorn. Well, maybe caramel popcorn for Hiei considering his love of sweet things. Yusuke made a big mistake this time, I almost feel bad for him. The shirtless image though prevents any true feelings of pity at this point though. As for grandchildren, hmmm maybe in the epilogue, I can't see this needing a sequel. More of a reaction from Koenma this chapter, more to come once he pins down Kurama which should be soon. Glad you are feeling better!

 

 

 

 

crazy-punk-gurl: Thanks for the link, I will try to include them in when Naraku comes into the picture. I have a slight idea of how I'm going to do it. It's now just an issue of setting it up.

 

 

Shabopo: I see what you are saying about the bonding thing, that's why I tried to make it kitsune specific since they seem to be the most mysterious of the demon races that I have found. As much as I like Inu if I had to make a choice between being stuck with him or Youko for all eternity Youko would win hands down lol I think you're right about the R & L thing. I'm just going to stick with your rule except for Kirara. After I started thinking about the R issue with Naraku I had to question myself on how Kurama was pronounced since I haven't seen the show. Too confusing.

 

 

 

 

phoenixs_paiste: Mom is in shock, I think I would be too at first. She's never struck me as the type to blow up at something but I could be mistaken. However she's not going to make things easy on the two of them. As for Yusuke, Rabid has the right idea. We need to place bets on the outcome. And maybe sell tickets to the fight. I'm sure Koenma is going to get his ass kicked if he doesn't give Youko what he wants but I don't think Koenma is really going to stand in his way of their relationship. I'm not trying to make him out to be a complete jerk. At least not in this story anyway lol

 

 

 

bloodbunny: I hear you, right now I'd be happy if I could finish one story. Looks like this will be the first. Then probably either C.O.S since it is almost done or Y.W.B.M. since developing the relationship between Yusuke/Kag/Kurama is easier than Hiei/Kag in my opinion.

 

 

inuyuyu_15: Ah, soda's are much better at the moment Thank you! I hope this update came out quick enough, we don't want you to die now. My pen name will always be Ryukotsusei, unless someone else manages to get to the name before me anyway. Although I think I've pretty much tagged it on the four major fanfic sites. I'm looking for others but so far haven't found many. Yusuke has to be a hardhead and do things the difficult way. Somehow I doubt he'll ever really listen but I could be wrong.
