Chapter 22
All the necessary arrangements had been made and it was now time to set his plan into motion. He was unsure of what to expect when he made this initial trip through the well although he was certain it would only be the first of many he would make.
Kagura had been bound to the castle by a spell and had been left with specific instructions on what to do in his absence. It would be five hundred years give or take a few before she would see him again and for that at least she had been thankful. Kanna stood beside him looking at the well emotionless as ever. It made no difference one way or the other as to whether or not he chose to take her with him.
“Kanna go through the well.”
Naraku was not about to be the first one to cross. If something went wrong then he could always replace the girl with another of like capabilities. He smiled with satisfaction as she climbed over the edge and fell into the portal. He shielded his eyes when the blue lights flared, transporting the girl to the future. When he looked into it's depths he realized it had indeed worked. Kanna was gone.
Grabbing the supplies he had decided to bring with him he himself climbed over the edge. Normally he would not have brought anything but since his destination was unknown he would be prepared. Some of the necessary items might not be available any longer in the strange world the Miko had come from. Bracing himself he stepped off of the edge and waited for the power to take him where he wished to go.
He landed with on the other side of the portal. A soft thump was the only sound that signaled his presence. Kanna had already climbed out using the rope ladder that Kagome had left when she came through the well the last time. Naraku had no such need of the ladder though, leaping out of the wells depths with practiced ease.
The first thing he noticed was that there was a building around the well. There didn't seem to be anything of interest around but it did not prevent him from looking. There were a few things he recognized there, one of which was the pink bicycle he had seen the Miko use on occasion.
The other thing he noticed was the foul odor that hung in the air. His nose wrinkled distastefully at the stench that assaulted him. He wondered what incredibly disgusting creature it could possibly be that would taint the air that badly. Even his miasma didn't burn the senses as much as the air did here. It was worse however when he opened the door and allowed the sunlight to filter into the small building. It took a few moments for his vision to clear for his eyes were watering with the combined attack on his sense of smell and sight.
The presence of the Miko was not here, only a lingering trace of her signature energy. She had been here all right, not long after the attack he had orchestrated on their little group. Though someone had cleaned it, there was still the presence of her blood in the air, the power that it had contained was still enough to make his skin crawl.
“Come Kanna.”
He stepped out with the albino child following closely behind him. He took note of the Shrine which was obviously her home. Her signature energy shown there as well in larger portions but again it was old. Older than the traces he had found in the well house. Curious indeed for he would have thought she would have gone into her home immedietly after coming through the well. Could she have died before making it inside or had she went elsewhere? He was determined to find out.
But first they needed to meet up with Kagura at their castle. Then he could search the young priestess out. As they walked together they garnered strange looks from people passing them by. Their clothing was certainly different from what was commonly worn in that time period. He was slightly surprised at what these humans were wearing. If possible they were more indecent than what the girl had worn.
How he longed to rip the throats out of the people staring at them. However he refrained for the moment, biding his time. Soon enough he would have these weak humans on their knees before him begging for him to end their suffering. People turned from him quickly when they saw the cruel smile that graced his lips. It was as if you could taste the threat of death in the air when he looked at them.
Naraku was brought out his thoughts when they reached the bottom of the shrine stairs by a strange noise. Curiously he waited to see what the sound was coming from when a car drove passed them. His eyes narrowed dangerously as he watched it. He had heard the girl say there were no demons in her time, so what was that contraption he just saw?
It had no demonic energy that he could feel, and inside it held a human but the person was not acting as if they had been eaten. Instead they were acting as if it were a normal occurance. How very strange. He noticed the stench that hung so heavily in the air strengthened as the car went by. Perhaps it was this that was the cause of such a taint.
They continued on, walking at a steady pace keeping in mind to not draw any more attention to themselves then absolutely necessary. His castle was not much farther away, the concealment spell he cast on it should have held up easily through time. Naraku couldn't say that he particularly liked what he saw of the future. However he would change things once he was the Ruler of all that was before him.

Koenma was growing frustrated. No matter what he had said as of yet Hiei had refused to tell him anything further about what he knew. All he would say is that he needed to talk to the Fox to get his answers. But the Demigod would not give up so easily. He was fully prepared to sit there the rest of the day if need be in order to get the information he wanted. Hiei on the other hand looked bored.
Yusuke had long since left, he did not want to be a part of anything more that was to come. Quite honestly he was worried. Hiei had been right about one thing. Kurama was going to be furious. No, that was an understatement. Kurama was going to be beyond furious. Youko was more than likely to go into a rage when he found out and he was unsure whether or not Kurama would be able to keep him in check. And he knew that if Hiei didn't spill what he knew soon the toddler was likely to call Kurama in to get his answers. He refused to be there when that happened.
So now it was just Koenma and Hiei locked in a battle of wills. It would have continued like this if it weren't for a beeping coming from the computer on Koenma's desk. The childlike ruler's attention snapped down to it to see what exactly it was that the sensors had picked up.
“Well, I hope Kurama is ready. The well's magic has been activated, my guess would be that Inuyasha has come to pick Kagome up.”
Hiei's eyes widened a fraction. The hanyou was dead and the only ones able to use the well to his knowledge had been Inuyasha and the girl. Had the girl decided to go back to the past? If she had then why would Koenma say it was Inuyasha? Surely the sensors weren't so fucked up they would confuse demonic and holy energy would they?
“Impossible. The Hanyou is dead.”
Koenma looked at Hiei for a moment like he had lost his mind. What did he mean that the hanyou was dead? There was demonic energy that came through the well and it wasn't from a full demon.
“What are you talking about Hiei?”
“Exactly what I said, Inuyasha is dead along with the rest of their group.”
“And you didn't think I needed to know this?!”
“Hn.”
“Botan Get in here now!”
The ferry girl ran in as fast as she could at Koenma's scream. Whatever it was she knew it had to be important, he sounding like he was almost in a state of panic. Upon entering the room she stared in shock for a moment. Hiei was scowling but this was far worse than his normal `I'm pissed off' look. He seemed genuinely concerned about something. Koenma was pacing across the top of his desk muttering under his breath. He looked furious.
“Koenma Sir?”
“Botan assemble the team immedietly. Kurama is with a Miko we've been watching. Inform him that there is a possible threat to Kagome's life and to stay with her. Bring Yusuke and Kuwabara to my office directly after you've finished speaking with him.”
“Sir wouldn't it be easier for me to just take Hiei to them and explain to them whatever is going on.”
“Botan just do it, we don't have time to waste!”
Botan swallowed hard at the reaction she received from him. Something bad had happened and she had no idea what it was. She brought out her oar and hurried out of the Reikai. Now all she had to do was track everyone down, starting with Kurama.

The ride to the Higurashi Shrine was strained to put it mildly. All three of the occupants in the car sat in virtual silence for the trip. Kagome was unsure of what to say to her mother to ease her mind and Kurama's patience had already been tested to the breaking point thanks to the talk between her mother and Youko.
Mrs. Higurashi was determined that her daughter would not be left alone with this stranger and Youko was just as adamant about the fact that Kagome would not be left alone at any time even if he had to sneak his way into her bedroom at night to watch over her. Kurama could just picture the difficulties that were coming, the last thing they needed to do was piss her mother off. Then they would be sleeping out in a tree just to watch over Kagome.
Kurama surpressed a groan when his communicator went off, drawing the attention of both Kagome and her mother. Knowing there luck Koenma needed them for a mission and they would not be able to refuse to go. He didn't want to deal with Yusuke at the moment considering what had almost happened at his home earlier.
“Sorry, I have to take this call.”
Kagome nodded and went back to staring out the window. Mrs. Higurashi continued to watch her driving but kept her attention on the young man in the back seat. Kurama opened the communicator, unsurprised to see Botan's face in it.
“If this is what I think it is Botan I can't do it.”
“Kurama this is important!”
Kurama sighed, it was always important. Whether it was a low class demon or not it was always a matter of life and death, the world rests on the teams shoulders sort of thing. He was heartily tired of it but his probation was no where near close to being over. So he was forced into being ordered around like a common dog.
“Okay Botan, what is going on?”
“I wish I knew, Koenma just told me to tell you that there is a possible threat to a Miko's life and to have you guard her.”
If it were possible Kurama would have reached through the communicator and grabbed the Deity of Death to shake her. He couldn't help the growl that spilled forth drawing the attention of both women again. Youko had gone into the calm but deadly mode that promised suffering to anyone who crossed him.
`Let me out. Now.'
`Youko I can't do that we are out in public.'
`I. Don't. Care. Let me out now!'
`No Youko, we don't even know what is going on.'
`Then find out.'
“Botan tell me what is going on.”
“I told you everything I know already. I have to go get the others now, Hiei is already at the office.”
This puzzled Kurama, it was rare for any of them to go directly to see Koenma, so what was Hiei doing there already? For that matter why was the rest of the team being assembled there as well? And how exactly had Koenma known he was with Kagome already unless he had been watching over them.
`I knew I felt something watching us earlier Red.'
`It would seem you are right Youko, I wonder exactly how much he saw and why he was watching us to begin with.'
`I can guess.'
`Well, Hiei wouldn't have said anything to him which leaves me to believe it was either Yusuke or Kuwabara. There is no telling which of the two it was.'
`I don't care which it was Red, if they've put her in danger by going to Koenma I will make them pay.
He knew that Youko was deadly serious about what he had said. The kitsune would see this as an act of betrayal, something that he would have never done to any of the others. He only hoped for Yusuke and Kuwabara's sakes that they were wrong and they hadn't gone to Koenma with what they knew.
Reviewer Responses:
inuyuyu_15: It's not likely to be pretty though I haven't yet decided what to do with them. As for the fan fic sights I'm on MM, AFF, FF, and Nfiction. If there are any others I am as of yet unaware of them. Glad to see you are still among the land of the living :-)
ice_princess_1185: It's just the way they are I believe.
crazy-punk-gurl: Yup, the sneaking scenes are coming soon. As well as the outraged cry of WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN BED WITH MY DAUGHTER!? Hehe poor Youko. Poor Kagome. Eh hell, maybe it would be best for them to stay in a hotel room and not tell her where they are going lol
Arbor: That is an entertaining thought now, I hadn't pictured it quite that way. Happy and Malicious at the same time eh? I knew I liked you :-D
Person... : It should be a good fight, though knowing Kagome she's likely to throw herself in the middle of it to get them to stop. Silly girl that she is.
Autumn Norris: I'm happy for each and every review that I receive, it lets me know that my demented mind is appreciated :-) I'll let you know when I finally work up the courage to get started on a Kenshin-IY-YYH crossover, it won't be for a while though. I had a sudden scary plot bunny attack me today that I am trying to send away. It whispered something to me about setting Youko against Sesshoumaru. I dunno, Youko pulled a job against the Taiyoukai and Lord Fluffy kidnapped Kagome from Youko in retribution. I need to stop thinking of new stories. *Bangs head on desk* ouch…..
Thanks to everyone who has reviewed thus far, until next time.
