Chapter 23

Yusuke and Kuwabara followed Botan into Koenma's office shortly after she had been sent to retrieve them. Yusuke couldn't help but feel a bit relieved when he noticed Kurama was not in attendance. That wasn't to say he might not show up later though. It was not an appealing thought.

“What is it this time? I was busy.”

“I've got a mission for the three of you. I'll fill you in on what we know, after that you are on your own. This is important so pay attention for once.”

“Yeah, it's always important kid. Get on with it.”

“Fine, as you are all aware of now Kurama has bonded himself to a Miko. I trust I don't need to explain to you what a Miko is. Her name is Kagome Higurashi, she is also the Guardian of the Shikon no Tama, an ancient artifact of immense power. A few years ago she discovered there was a portal on the shrine's property that allowed her to time travel. On her first visit to the Feudal Era the jewel was stolen from her. Before she could retrieve it she ended up shattering it into several small fragments.”

“Figures, leave it to a girl to break something important.”

“Shut up Urameshi, you've broken plenty of things.”

“Shut your face Moron.”

“Make me Urameshi!”

“Enough!! You two settle down, we aren't finished here.”

The argument abruptly stopped but the guys continued to glare at each other. Hiei briefly wondered if perhaps Koenma would allow him the pleasure of putting the two of them out of their misery instead of continuing on with the idiotic fight.

“Now then, she's been traveling back in time to reform the jewel before anyone else can find the pieces and use the jewel for their own evil purposes. From what Hiei has told me, the entire group with the exception of Kagome was killed recently. Kagome was on the brink of death when Kurama found her.”

“So is that why Kurama mated with the girl?”

“I believe that might be part of it but as of right now I am unclear as to his reasons behind his actions. What's done is done and we will not interfere with that detail provided it does not cause problems. Now comes the important part of this. The portal was keyed to allow Kagome and the Inu Hanyou Inuyasha through. However Inuyasha is dead and Kagome is with Kurama. Apparently someone else has the ability to use the well and whoever it is possesses demonic energy. I need you three to find them and bring them in. They don't belong in this time period and they might be hunting the Miko.”

“Fine, tell us where we are going and let us go so we can kick this demon's ass and be done with it.”

“Hn. If this demon is who I think it is it will not be so simple as that Detective.”

“Hiei do you know who it is then?”

Hiei had a growing sense of unease. There was only one Hanyou he knew of from that time period that would have any interest in time traveling and that was Naraku. How had the bastard managed to pull such a feat off though? He had attempted to follow the girl through the well after she had vanished only to hit the bottom. If Naraku had indeed come through then Kagome was in grave danger.

“I have an idea. Let's hope I am wrong.”

Koenma sighed, somehow he had a bad feeling about this entire thing. He wondered why these things somehow always seemed to happen to him. He thought about calling Kurama in and having him bring the girl. Surely she would be safe enough in the Reikai and he could send Kurama out with the others to hunt this new demon down. Somehow however he knew that Kurama would object to leaving the girl. He did not need to deal with an enraged Kitsune at the moment.

“Botan will take you three to the last known coordinates of this demon. Report to me when you find him.”

“You mean to tell me we have to hunt this fucking demon down? We don't know who or what he is and we don't know where he is. This just gets better and better.”

“Deal with it Urameshi, we've been dealt worse.”

“Yeah, being constantly stuck with you.”

Botan arrived just in time to forestall another argument between the two. At the moment Koenma wasn't sure what was going to happen first a fight between Yusuke and Kuwabara or Hiei slaughtering both of them. He was flexing his sword hand every so often as if he were holding himself back.

She opened a portal and Yusuke went after her first, followed by Kuwabara and then Hiei. The fire apparition paused on the threshold of the portal and looked back at Koenma. If this was Naraku they would be lucky if one or more of the team didn't end up with a severe case of being dead. Hiei cursed under his breath as he stepped into the portal.

***************************************************************** **********************

“Problems Kurama?”

Kurama was snapped out of his discussion once more by Kagome's voice. He was surprised she hadn't become aggravated with how often he spaced out when conversing with Youko. Worry clearly shown on her face, he was certain that she had overheard what Botan had said.

“It would seem so Kagome. It sounds like my boss has identified a potential threat to you, I've been assigned to protect you. Although I would have done so anyway without Koenma's orders.”

“Do you have any idea of what it is?”

“Unfortunately not at this point. I'm sure Koenma will inform me as soon as he knows anything.”

Kagome went silent once more. It seemed no matter where she went she was in danger. Not even being at home was safe anymore. She felt like crying. How many more people would have to die before the jewel could be destroyed? Would a wish even obliterate it out of existence?

Mrs. Higurashi watched the exchange silently. So there was a new threat to her daughter and in their own time? Somehow it did not seem real to her, nothing had ever happened in this time with the exception of the Noh mask. She had to wonder if perhaps it was just a ploy to gain favor with her and Kagome. She would keep a close eye on the two of them. She would also enlist the help of Souta, he would be helpful in keeping Kurama occupied while he stayed at the house.

She almost smiled to herself at the plan she was forming in her head. She would test Kurama's devotion to her daughter to determine whether or not he was worthy of Kagome's hand in marriage. As she turned the car off they noticed the front door fly open. A adolescent boy flew out of the house and towards the car.

Kagome had barely stepped out of the car when she was hit by Souta's enthusiastic greeting. She hugged him close, grateful that she had the opportunity to see him again. She would not neglect him as she had done in the past. Coming so close to death had taught her to treasure each moment with her family that she could.

Kurama flared his senses as soon as they arrived at the shrine. Nothing really seemed amiss there except for a lingering odor that he had never ran across before. The stench of the being was horrid, but he made sure to imprint it to memory. It was definitely demonic in nature but whoever it was had left not long before. He would get Kagome settled inside and then take a closer look around the property.

He kept a close eye on her as she reunited with her brother and then followed her into the house with her mother and brother trailing behind them. Her mother turned and looked at him trying to decide where it was she would put him. There was a spare bedroom but it adjoined Kagome's room by way of the bathroom.

That idea did not necessarily thrill her. The other two possibilities were either having him stay in Souta's room or in the living room. Souta only had one bed so it would mean one of them would have to sleep on the floor. Or he could take the couch which pulled out into a bed.

Perhaps it would be best for all concerned if he stayed downstairs. It might not be the ideal situation but it would make her the most comfortable knowing there was plenty of distance between him and her daughter. What she didn't realize is the lengths the kitsune would go to in order to stay close to Kagome.

“Follow me, you can put your bag in Souta's room for now. You'll be staying downstairs on the couch. It pulls out into a bed. I trust I don't have to remind you that Kagome's bedroom is off limits.”

Kurama said nothing, it was easier to just agree with her instead of creating animosity between the two of them. Youko was of course grumbling in his head, he did not appreciate being told when he could and could not be close to his mate. Add into it there was now an unknown threat to her and he was even more loathe to leave her side for any reason.

`This is unacceptable! What happens if someone comes in the middle of the night? We might not make it to her in time!'

`Youko I don't see where we have much of a choice except to stay on alert. If necessary you can go without sleep longer than I can. If it will make you feel better then while everyone is sleeping you can take charge and keep watch.'

`That will have to do I suppose. I'm still not going to allow her to tell me when I can and can't be around my mate though.'

`You'll get us kicked out of here with that attitude.'

`I always get what I want Red, you need to remember that.'

Kurama set his bag where she indicated and set about putting his clothes away in the closet. He wasn't sure how long they would be staying there but regardless they were not going to be seen resembling a rumpled mess. Once that was done he rejoined everyone downstairs.

“Kagome I need to go check the premises, please stay in here until I come back.”

“I could come with you.”

That was absolutely out of the question as far as Youko was concerned until he knew more of what was going on. She'd be safe enough in the house for now and he would not be gone for long. No more than a few minutes.

“I'd rather you stay here for now, besides your brother has missed you. I will only be a few minutes.”

Kagome nodded and watched him turn, going out the front door. She hadn't sensed anything in the area but then she might not even if there was something there. The Shrine was loaded with Holy Energy which tended to mask the presence of other energies unless they were extremely powerful. And with her being as drained as she was there was a chance she would miss it anyway. She'd trust in Kurama to find out if anything was amiss. With that decided she turned back to her brother who was clinging to her as if she would disappear.

***************************************************************** ***********************

Botan disappeared almost immedietly after dropping them off at the site of the last energy reading. Hiei immedietly picked up the trail and set off intent on finding the hanyou. Yusuke and Kuwabara had no choice but to follow him as quickly as they could.

If it hadn't have been for his Jagan even Hiei would not have been able to pick up the trail, it had been cloaked that well. He recognized the energy signature not to mention the stench that came with it. It was indeed Naraku. They needed to find him as quickly as possible. If he managed to escape them then Kagome would be in grave danger.

As they traveled towards Naraku's concealed castle, said bastard watched them intently in Kanna's mirror. He was surprised, apparently the girl was misinformed about demon's existing in this realm. The one in black was quite obviously a demon and one he had seen before. It had been his involvement that had prevented the destruction of the Miko. He would pay for his participation in blood.

He turned his attention to the other two that were following some distance behind the first. One was quite obviously human. He seemed to have a fairly high level of Spirit Energy but little else. He was running rather clumsily, Naraku smirked. This ones main power seemed to lay in using brute strength. The other one though, he was more interesting.

He could sense the Demonic Energy the boy had within him as well as a huge amount of Spirit Energy. He also moved with ease which spoke of intense training. He briefly toyed with the idea of approaching him and offering him a place by his side. One who could harness both powers would be a formidable force indeed.

Hiei came to a sudden stop as the trail that he had been following abruptly vanished. Not even the Jagan could pick up on any residual energies, it was as if the hanyou had disappeared into thin air.

“Now what?”

“We search until we pick up the trail once more.”

“Hiei do you know who this is?”

“I do. His name is Naraku, be on your guard he is quite powerful.”

“Fucking lovely.”

They spread out and began combing the area. Naraku had seen all he wanted to see through the mirror. It was time to test them out. He sent a puppet in his stead to meet up with the three who searched for him.

Yusuke was startled when he was faced with what appeared to be a white baboon. The evil that radiated off of it was incredible, he watched warily waiting for the opportunity to strike. Hiei noticed that Yusuke had stopped searching and raced over when he saw the puppet, drawing his katana as he approached.

“Why are you searching for me?”

“You do not belong here Naraku.”

“I come and go as I please, who are you to stop me?”

Yusuke had about had enough of the guy already. His condescending attitude pissed him off. This demon had trespassed and that was all the grounds he needed to eliminate him. Throw in the fact that the bastard was hunting Kurama's mate and he was spoiling for a fight. He may not agree with what his friend had gotten himself into but he'd take care of any threat to the life he was building if necessary.

“Fuck off monkey boy, you're on our turf now.”

“Such language, you remind me of Inuyasha. There is something else you will soon have in common with him.”

Yusuke had begun to power up his spirit gun, intent on blowing Naraku to hell and back.

“Yeah, what is that?”

“You'll be dead soon.”

“I don't fucking think so. Spirit Gun!”

Blue light flared and enveloped the white cloaked figure. Menacing laughter was heard echoing through the area as they waited for the smoke to clear. Everyone stayed on their guard. When visibility was restored all they saw laying upon the ground was a broken wooden doll with hair wrapped around it.

“I thought you said this guy was powerful Hiei.”

“He is you baka, that was only a puppet. He was letting us know he is watching us.”

“Well that was certainly a chicken shit way of doing it then.”

Reviewer Responses:

inuyuyu_15: Nfiction is a lot like FF but it allows NC-17 stories on it. Unfortunately it isn't very popular. Very few people review on there though so I'm a bit more lax in updating the stories on that particular site. Mom is getting very nosy nose and she's involving Souta in it too. However I think it is going to end up biting her in the butt before all is said and done. Naraku will find out about Naraku in the next chapter likely though she may not see him until the chapter after that. Kurama and Yusuke's confrontation will likely happen soon as well.

Shabopo: I'm honored that this is one of the few that you review regularly :-) I'd likely be the same way if Kagome was my daughter, the relationship would be off to an extremely rocky start to say the least. Kagome is still definitely in shock about Inuyasha. The `Oh my God what have I done' scene is coming shortly. As soon as Kurama goes to the past and then comes back to here, which will be within the next three chapters I think.

Natsumi Tsuchi-Ookami: Thank you! :-)

Rabid: You're right about the pollution thing. I used to live out in the middle of no where on top of a mountain. When I moved back to the city I literally became ill for the longest time. The smell of the city was nauseating. Eventually I became used to it again but ewww. The Witness Protection Program sounds like a good idea actually lol Poor Yusuke, he brought it on himself though. Naraku's essentials, ummmm do you really want me to go in that direction? I for one do not care to venture a guess, he's a sadistic bastard and there's no telling what was in that bag O.O I'll probably do an epilogue, you're right a sequel would be too energy consuming and I could invest that same energy into a new fic. Kagome did here it, she just stayed silent through the conversation. She knows something is up. And I don't mind about the multiple posts really. It brightens my day when I check the email and go YAY! Three more reviews!

bloodbunny: Bloodthirsty are we? Lol hopefully we'll end up with some bloodshed soon, I'm thinking of turning Naraku loose on some of the people in the city soon. Someone is bound to piss him off enough to make a scene :-D

Fury-Chan: I'm glad to see you like the story so much!

crazy-punk-gurl: Yup, something like that is gonna happen soon. A Naraku Milkshake? O.O That's enough to turn anyone's stomache. I think I'll pass on the ice cream I was considering having for dessert now lol

ice_princess_1185: ummmm yup he did. Scary thought isn't it?

whirleeQ: You know, somehow I can see that fic and I'm sure it would get a ton of reviews. I'm going to enjoy torturing him some in upcoming chapters. I foresee a run in with local law enforcement soon. Kanna will probably be watching in the mirror thinking about what a complete idiot he is.

Kura-kun's-lovr: Ohhhhhh THANK YOU!!! He's gorgeous :-D I'll keep an eye out for your story, I can't wait to check it out. Sounds wonderful, nothing like tender loving care to get a romance going. Enjoy the *ahem* punishment Kuronue sets for you, I'm sure it will be fun. ;-) *Leads Kuronosuke off* Mwahaha

Thanks to everyone for the reviews! Until next time.
