Chapter 24

Once Kurama had left the house Souta decided it was time to get the answers to his questions. He had thought his sister was dead when they could not find her and now for her to show up with a complete stranger was unsettling to say the least. He looked back to his sister, her expression was unreadable.

“Kagome? Who was that?”

Kagome sighed; she knew that she would have to explain Kurama's presence to the rest of her family. She wasn't certain how to break the news to him of Inuyasha's death. Her mother had obviously not told him about it, she knew that if her mother had that Souta would be far more upset than he currently was. She led him to the couch and waited for him to sit down before she started to speak.

“That is Kurama, but only call him that when it is just us around. In public he is Shuichi Minamino.”

Souta merely nodded at her request although he did find it a bit strange. Perhaps he was an undercover police officer or something and he had found his sister. That would explain the need for secrecy about his name. For some reason the name Shuichi Minamino struck a cord of recognition in his mind but he couldn't quite place it. He would think more on it later.

“So why is he staying here with us and when are you going back to the past? It will be hard to explain your absences to him.”

“He knows about my trips to the Feudal Era Souta and as for when I am going back, I'm not certain yet. Kurama will probably be staying for a while.”

“Inuyasha is not going to like that, you know how he feels about you being around other guys.”

Tears gathered in her eyes. Souta was right, Inuyasha never did like her being around other men but never again would he appear to keep her away from Hojo. There would be no more fights between him and Kouga. Inuyasha was gone and there wasn't anything she could do to change that fact.

Souta watched as his sister began to cry, the realization dawning on him. Kagome had come through the well badly injured. Inuyasha had not come after her and now, here his sister sat crying when he mentioned his idols name.

“He's dead isn't he?”

Souta's voice came out as a mere whisper. Kagome almost didn't hear him, she only nodded since she did not trust her voice as that moment. How could she tell him what had happened? She knew he would demand answers, but would he hate her for telling the truth of what happened? Inuyasha had been the closest thing to a brother that Souta ever had. She wouldn't blame him if he did.

“It can't be true, no one could kill Inuyasha! He was too strong, and he had the Tetsusaiga! He can't be dead!”

His words were harsh as he broke down, collapsing into his sisters arms. Her mother came and sat down on the couch with them wrapping her arms around the both of them. She couldn't take the pain away but perhaps she could ease it somewhat.

“He's gone Souta, I'm so sorry.”

***************************************************************** *************************

Kurama stepped outside into the sunlight. There was a sense of foreboding in the air, as if something big was coming. He tried to shake it off but it would not dispel. Deciding to get this search over and done with so they could rejoin Kagome in the house he brought Youko close to the surface. His senses were far better for this sort of work.

`The signature energy is unfamiliar but that is to be expected. Whoever came through is powerful, they've masked there presence well.'

`How long ago were they here Youko?'

`Approximately an hour ago. Perhaps a bit less.'

`Any idea of what kind of demon it was, I can't place the energy.'

“A hanyou though what sort of demonic energy it is I cannot place. It's extremely jumbled, as if there were several different kinds merged.'

They made there way into the well house where the energy originated from. A suspicion had formed in their mind. Naraku was a hanyou although they weren't sure of exactly what kind and he was trapped in the Feudal Era, or at least he was. Someone had obviously come through the well and Naraku was clearly the most logical choice. But the well did not permit passage to just anyone unless Naraku had found some way to change that. They needed to speak to Kagome, she might have the answers.

He turned and quickly headed back into the house. The scent of tears hung heavily in the air, he let them guide him into the living room where Kagome, her mother and her brother were sitting. There was also an older man that had joined them even though he was holding himself slightly away from the others. His smell was familiar though, it was obvious that he was family.

The old man looked up when he entered and scowled at him. Kurama moved closer to Kagome when the man reached into his shirt for something. The kitsune kept a wary eye on him, he wouldn't attack her family but he wasn't going to stand there and allow the man to assault him either. Kagome noticed her grandfathers actions and pulled herself out of the embrace the three had been drawing comfort from.

“Grandfather stop, he is a friend.”

“Kagome this is unwise. I can tell he is a demon!”

“We are well aware of that fact but he isn't here to hurt anyone.”

Souta's head jerked up when Kagome confirmed that Kurama was in fact a demon and he cast a glare over to the kitsune. Demons were responsible for all the pain that had happened in his family. He didn't know how Kagome could allow another demon into the house. Inuyasha couldn't protect them anymore, what would happen if this stranger turned on them?

Kurama ignored the look, it was perfectly understandable the suspicion that the boy had of them. Instead he focused his attention on Kagome, he wasn't sure how much she could take. She went from leading a dangerous life where she had managed to find love, to having that love and her extended family ripped away from her. Then being bonded to him, having to deal with her family who was determined to make things difficult for him and now there was the distinct possibility Naraku had come to the future for her.

“Kagome I need to ask you a few questions.”

She looked at him curiously, it was obvious he was troubled and she doubted it had anything to do with the crying session she had been engaged in moments ago. Perhaps he had found something outside. She dreaded hearing what questions he had. Somehow she didn't think whatever it was that he planned on asking would be good.

“Kagome has anyone besides you and Inuyasha ever been able to use the well before?”

She shook her head, somehow knowing where this was going.

“He's here isn't he? Naraku somehow managed to come to this time.”

“I believe so, there are traces of an unknown hanyou that originate from the well. If it is indeed Naraku then we must be prepared for him to strike at any time.”

She knew all too well what the bastard could do, and she was aware that he would stop at nothing to get exactly what he wanted. She only hoped that both Kurama and herself would be strong enough to hold him off and hopefully eliminate the threat he presented.

“He'll come for me and the jewel. How did he get through the well?”

“He might come for you but I promise you I will protect you. As for your question, neither of us knows. Koenma already has the others out searching for him.

***************************************************************** **************************

The three of them filed into Koenma's office, ready to make the report on what they had found which quite frankly, wasn't much. After the puppet had been destroyed they had continued to search and only came up empty handed. Hiei was worried that there was a barrier against his Jagan that he could not penetrate. Koenma might have a way for them to make there way past it but he had his doubts.

Koenma looked up from his stack of paperwork and stared at his team. Two of the three looked tired, even if it had been an easy battle against the puppet the searching afterwards had worn them down.

“Okay Toddler, tell me who the hell Monkey Boy is and I'm not referring to Kuwabara.”

“Monkey Boy Yusuke?”

“Yeah, you know. The dude dressed in the baboon skin. Hiei knows him, I'm assuming you do as well.”

Koenma didn't want to admit just how little they did actually know about Naraku. He had existed before the barriers were set up and the only information they had to go on was what his spies had picked up from various conversations between Kagome and Inuyasha while they were in this time.

“He's dangerous, he wants the Miko, as well as the Shikon no Tama. If he were to get hold of them he would likely be able to take over all three realms.”

“You're shitting us right?”

“Hn. He's not Detective. If he harnesses the power of the Shikon no Tama as well as controlling the Miko none of us are likely to be able to stand against him. Not even if Mukuro, Raizen and Yomi were to combine forces. Makai would fall quickly, although I'm not sure which realm Naraku would start with.”

“Good luck convincing them of what's happening to get them to join together.”

“Let's hope it does not come to that Yusuke.”

Koenma knew that if nothing else he needed to call a meeting between the three of them to inform them of what was going on so they could make adequate preparations for battle if necessary. But it didn't mean he had to like the prospect. He also knew that Kurama needed to be informed of what little information that they had found. He would send Hiei for that particular task. Yusuke might not come out in one piece until things had been explained to Kurama.

“Hiei you will be the one to let Kurama in on what has transpired.”

“Hn. You also want me to smooth things over for the Detective.”

“Well, yes that would be helpful. I don't really feel like having to revive him again because of a disagreement between the two.”

Hiei vanished from the room, making his way back to the human realm where he would track down his partner. This was not something in particular that he was looking forward to, the Kitsune was going to be furious over several different issues. He was thankful though that for the most part his rage was not going to be directed towards him.

***************************************************************** **********************

Kagome had eventually fallen asleep on the couch. No one could really blame her with how stressed out she was. Kurama had sat down on the couch next to the sleeping girl and pulled her into his lap ignoring the pointed looks he was getting from her family. This might fall under the category of physical affection but it was something that she needed right then and he was not going to deny her. Her mother had left them under Souta's watchful eye while she tried to explain things to Grandfather in the kitchen.

“You shouldn't be holding my sister like that.”

Souta glared at him, unhappy that this demon who looked human was taking such liberties with Kagome. The full explanation of their relationship had yet to be explained to the boy and based on the reaction he was getting at the moment Kurama knew that the kid would have a hard time accepting it.

“Kagome is tired, and she tends to be plagued by nightmares if I am not there when she sleeps.”

“You've been sleeping with my sister then.”

It was an accusation plain and simple. Souta didn't necessary trust him and he was concerned that Kurama was trying to replace Inuyasha which just wasn't going to happen. Kurama refused to comment to that. It was true he had been sleeping with her but nothing sexual had happened much to Youko's displeasure. He was doing a remarkable job of keeping his sexual urges under control with the girl so far but it was only a matter of time before the bond had to be completed.

They both knew that she was not ready for that step yet though and would try to give her all the time she needed to come to terms with her former loves death. There had been plenty of tears already but they both knew that she was still greatly in denial over what had happened. Eventually the wall holding her feelings back was going to break and they were going to have a hard time pulling her through it.

“If you think you can just come in here and take over Inuyasha's place in our family you're wrong! I don't know what you want from her but I won't let you hurt her!”

“I'm not trying to replace Inuyasha Souta, please try to understand this. However there are certain things you must know. In order to save your sister the demon side of me had to perform a blood bond. We are now inseparable, it is the equivalent of a human marriage. You're sister would have died otherwise and we could not allow that to happen.”

For a moment Souta looked at him like he did not believe him before his face turned to one of resignation. Now he knew why his mother had told him that Kurama was not to be left alone with his sister unless it was an emergency. He briefly wondered if there was a way of them getting divorced if it was the same as a human marriage although he somehow doubted it. While he didn't have to like it, he supposed he could at least try to get along with his new brother inlaw.

“So what kind of demon are you?”

Reviewer Responses:

phoenixs_paiste: You are right, the name of that fic is Meant To Live. I couldn't find it either although if I remember right it is also on Imaginative Love website but it is currently down. I think it will be back up within the week. I myself liked that fic as well, unfortunately the author never finished it and it's been quite a while since it has been updated if I remember correctly. I'm afraid it might have been abandoned.

Sesshy81: Thanks! I'm glad you like it so much.

Samantha121212 : I like Yusuke too much to kill him off or seriously hurt him so don't worry. There's likely to be a heated exchange between the two but nothing that would destroy the friendship they have. I'm not certain if I'm bringing Genkai into it or not yet, I'm still trying to figure out how to work Lord Sesshoumaru into it all. Glad you are enjoying the story so much, thank you for reviewing.

Fogkit: That is coming in the next chapter. I almost put it into this one but decided to end it with Kurama and Souta facing off. You'd think he was an older brother instead of younger with the way he is acting lol

crazy-punk-gurl: Don't worry about that at all, I'm much the same way. Eh, you should see some of the stories I have tucked away in my favorites. Wait, you probably have the same ones if we think the same way lol

inuyuyu_15: In answer to your question, we shall never know…. They found each other and that's the important part. Even if Naraku is hellbent on destroying her.

Rabid: Damn that character limit on reviews! Lol About the car thing, you know I never thought about it that way but a car just sort of fit. I can't imagine lugging enough clothing for an extended stay across town. Tires me out thinking of it. Naraku's Essentials. You know, that would make an interesting title for a PWP for AFF but…..Eh, I don't think I should be the one to write that. Scary! Kurama cooking, you know I've thought about that and for some reason he strikes me as the type that could easy become a five star chef. Everything is perfection with him so I just can't picture him not being good at it. He might volunteer to make dinner on occasion, it would help get him in good with mom I think.

Shabopo: Hn is a very useful word. I've begun actually using it (Strange I know) and people just sort of look at me oddly. I wonder why….. I dunno, I think I'd be conflicted about where to let him stay in the house. Perhaps you are right, I can always move him around after her mother experiences the first nightmare she has and Kurama is the only one who can calm her down. It's something to think about anyway.

ice_princess_1185: You're very welcome!

Mija: Here is more as requested. Likely to be another chapter before the night is out if I can get motivated. I really want to read other fictions but strangely enough no one on my favorites updated. It sucks :( I know this wasn't exactly a tear jerking chapter but I'm thinking the next one or the one after that will be. We have at least one more dream featuring Inu coming up. I've noticed that the smaller you are the more volatile you tend to be when you lose your temper. At least that's the way I am as well.. And then look at Hiei, but then he's constantly pissed off at something it seems so maybe he is a bad example lol

Ookami K.: Youko's more sensual side will be coming out shortly, I'm trying not to rush things too badly. It just wouldn't look right for them to become physically involved so soon after Inu's death with how I characterized him in this fic. If he had gone to hell with Kikyo then perhaps. We should have some fluff in the next couple of chapters.

Whirleeq: Ask and you shall receive, I hope this was along the lines of what you expected out of Souta. I'd be pretty bitter in his place as well although when he finds out that Kagome was the one to kill Inuyasha I'm not sure how he is going to take it yet. As to the couch, I seriously considered the tree idea for a while but her mother doesn't quite strike me as being that cruel, at least unless she finds him in bed with her lol As for the chapters I am not sure how it is I do it. I think this one took me four or five hours. I'm not totally happy with it but that's mainly because of the scene in Koenma's office. I wanted to get more into the Raizen, Mukuro, Yomi aspect but…. I have no idea how they would react to each other at all so having them talk about them was kind of hard to decide how to do. So I left it barely touched on for now until I learn more. Thanks for the cookies, they were great!

Until next time everyone, Thanks to all who reviewed!
