Chapter 25

“My Demon half is a Spirit Fox. It's a long story but basically there are two of us living within one body.”

Souta looked surprised, he had never heard of such a thing being possible unless it was some form of possession. Somehow though he didn't think that was the case, although if his head started spinning like the girl did in the Exorcist he'd have to seriously consider changing his opinion.

“Can you talk to each other?”

“Actually, Youko very rarely shuts up.”

`What you no longer appreciate my witty repartee?'

`You do get annoying at times Youko.'

`Hmph, you're one to talk. You're not only annoying, you're boring on top of it.'

`I resent that remark.'

`Don't you mean resemble?'

`Shut up Fox.'

`You first Red.'

“Hey Kurama are you okay?”

Souta was looking at him like he had quite possibly lost his mind. But then that was a frequent thought that crossed many peoples minds when he spaced out due to the arguments that occurred in his head. You got used to it after a while. Kurama smiled at the worried kid.

“We're fine, Youko took exception to my comment about his mouth.”

“It must be strange having something inside your head constantly.”

`I am not a THING!'

`That could be debated on occasion.'

`You're one to talk then. I am you remember.'

`How could I ever forget?'

Youko receded back into his mind with a growl. He certainly didn't need or deserve the remarks he was being given by the both of them. Thing indeed, perhaps he would need to show them just how much of a THING he was not. He was the most feared and ruthless thief in the Makai!

`Formerly the most Feared and Ruthless Thief in the Makai.'

`I could change that if you'd give me control more often.'

`That's the main reason I don't give you control more often. We'd have Reikai after us once again.'

`They may have caught me once because I was careless. I assure you that it would not happen again.'

`Well forgive me if I am unwilling to take that chance.'

“What's he saying now Kurama?”

“Trust me, you don't need to know.”

Souta shrugged, he was merely trying to make conversation with him. Kagome was still asleep and showed no signs of waking up and he wasn't supposed to leave the room unless his mother or grandfather came back. The silence drug on and he decided to try again. Eventually the guy would either start talking to him or someone would come and rescue him from the boredom.

“So why don't you look like a demon?”

“We have two forms, as I am now and then the form of Youko Kurama, the Spirit Fox that shares this body. For the most part Youko does not come out. It's too difficult to blend in when he is the dominant one.”

Suddenly Souta was more interested in Kurama. So he did have a demon form, and it was obvious that he was a demon when he changed. He wondered what he looked like, if he resembled a Kitsune or if he resembled a cross between Kitsune and Human much like Inuyasha looked like a mix of Dog and Human.

“What does he look like?”

“Well, he's quite a bit taller than I am, as well as more muscular. He has long silver hair as well as Fox ears and a Tail. He is incredibly vain as well.'

`Dammit I have a right to be.'

`You carry it to an extreme Youko.'

`I do not.'

`Kitsunes.'

`Humans. Impossible to put up with.`

`Hey, you're mate is human.'

`She is the exception to the rule. You on the other hand, are not.'

Souta wanted to see Youko but at the same time he did not. From the sounds of it he closely resembled Inuyasha and he wasn't sure how he would react to seeing someone who so closely resembled his deceased friend. So instead he just continued with the normal questions instead of asking for the Fox to come out.

“So do you have any special powers? Or special weapons?”

“We manipulate plant life. As for special weapons I carry a wide array of them all ranging from my Rose Whip to various poisons.”

“Oh, so you don't have a cool weapon like the Tetsusaiga then?”

“The Tetsusaiga was a sword correct?”

“Yes! It normally looked like a battered, rusted piece of junk but when it transformed it was super cool. And it had a few special attacks that could destroy anything in it's path!”

Their conversation carried on in the same vein for a while since Kagome was asleep. She half listened for a while as she dozed but eventually a deeper sleep claimed her. When she opened her eyes all she saw at first was white mist. It was then she realized that she was dreaming. Eventually the mist cleared and she found she was standing in front of the Goshinboku.

***************************Dream Sequence**************************************

She wondered why she would dream of the Goshinboku when she realized that her dream had also put her in the past. The shrine was no where to be seen, only the well was nearby. She settled herself down on the ground to wait for whatever it was that was to happen.

She hadn't been sitting for more than a few moments when Inuyasha materialized slowly before her. She regarded him curiously. Was this a dream like before where he was actually coming to visit her? If so he might have information on what was going on.

Inuyasha smiled at her albeit a bit sadly. He lowered himself down on the ground next to her and took her hand into his. They sat in companionable silence for a while, Kagome was unsure of what to say and Inuyasha did not want to ruin the mood that they both were in. Unfortunately though he knew that he had to do it.

He looked over at the woman that he loved. What he wouldn't give in order to come back to her for real. But even if he did there was no hope for them now. She was taken by another and even though she hadn't known Kurama for long he had been watching. He saw the tender smiles she bestowed on the Fox. She might not know it yet but her heart was beginning to accept Kurama. It couldn't be called love yet, but it would become that way eventually.

“Kagome, I know you and the Fox have had suspicions. I'm here to confirm what you suspect. Naraku has come through the well and is in your era.”

Kagome looked horrified. Oh how she had hoped they were mistaken but now she knew for certain. Inuyasha would never lie to her, not about something like this. What was going to happen now?

“How did he get here?”

“He found a magician who altered the well. Now any demon and those with Demon blood can pass through it in addition to you.”

“So that means not only he is here but there could be others as well??”

Inuyasha nodded, he knew how Naraku had brought Kanna through the well. Thankfully he hadn't brought any other demons with him. Those two were bad enough as it was. But the way the well was altered also worked in their favor as well.

“Kagome, he brought Kanna through with him. Kagura is still around as well although she had to wait five hundred years. I need you to do something for me.”

“Anything Inuyasha.”

“Either you or the Fox needs to go through the well. Kaede and the rest of the village came upon the campsite where…. It happened. They gave us proper burials, but Kaede kept our weapons including the Tetsusaiga. Promise me one of you will go and get the Tetsusaiga for me Kagome. I want you to give it to the Fox. Make sure he keeps it on him at all times.”

“Inuyasha, I don't know if the Tetsusaiga will work for Kurama. He isn't a member of your family.”

Inuyasha shook his head. That fact didn't make a difference. The sword was now a combination of both his and his fathers fangs. His fang being a part of it would allow Kurama to wield it in defense of Kagome if necessary. There was another reason why he wished the Fox to carry the sword but he did not want to voice it just in case his plans did not work out like he hoped.

“He has the desire to protect you Kagome. That is all he needs.”

“Okay Inuyasha. I promise, one of us will go and get the Tetsusaiga.”

“I don't have much time left here. Everyone misses you Kagome and they send their love. Shippou especially, he watches over you every chance he gets.”

“I miss them all too Inuyasha. Including you.”

He reached over and pulled her into an embrace. He wouldn't kiss her, he couldn't lead her on, making her hold onto the feelings they had for each other. It wouldn't be right for him to do such a thing to her. He would help her move on as best as he could. Even as he held her he began to disappear along with the scenery that surrounded them.

********************************* End Dream Sequence***************************

Kagome began to awaken when she felt a familiar demonic presence approaching. She had tensed up at first but quickly relaxed back into Kurama's arms when she identified who it was. Kurama was similarly unconcerned by the visitor. In fact he had been expecting him to show up sooner or later.

Souta on the other hand was totally unprepared for Hiei's sudden appearance in the room. He yelped and fell off the couch, garnering a look of disgust from Hiei and an amused chuckle from Kurama.

“Who the hell are you?!”

“Language Souta. That is Hiei, a friend.”

That got all three males attention. Souta's because she knew of another demon, for it was obvious what he was. There was absolutely no way he could be human. He looked incredibly dangerous in Souta's opinion, it was mainly the look in his eyes. It was enough to give him a cold chill racing up his spine.

Hiei looked to the girl in faint surprise though it didn't show. The fact that she considered him a friend shocked him. Yes, he had helped her so many centuries ago but they barely knew each other. Was that moment of aid enough for the girl to consider one of the most ruthless killers in all the three realms a friend? The concept of someone accepting him that easily was a foreign one. Even Kurama had taken a while to warm up to him enough to have what they considered a good working partnership.

Kurama's reasoning was much the same but he knew how Kagome's mind worked. She could see the good in almost anyone. The exception being Naraku, mainly because there was nothing redeemable in the hanyou any longer. His soul was permanently tainted.

“Fox we need to talk.”

“We do. Naraku has come through the well.”

Souta's eyes grew incredibly wide and at that moment he wanted to do nothing more than run screaming. His sister had told him tales of how horrible Naraku was and the atrocities he had committed. And now he was in this age? Who was going to protect them now?

“Hn. We ran into one of his puppets today when Koenma sent us out to see who he was. Yusuke destroyed it but we were unable to find the hanyou. He will come for her. And the jewel.”

Kurama's eyes flashed golden as Youko's rage flared to life. There was no way Naraku would get his hands on either of them if he had anything to say about it. For several long moments the two of them were locked in a battle of wills over who would dominate the body. Kagome sensed the internal conflict going on and decided to help. There was no sense in wasting energy fighting each other. She cuddled up closer to him, burying her face in the crook of her neck and nuzzled him. Shippou had often done that to reassure her whenever she was upset over something and had explained it was a kitsune was of comforting a family member.

Youko slowly relaxed under her gesture and wondered where she had learned that. Most likely the kitsune kit that she had taken under her wing and treated as a brother. He would speak to Koenma, it was tragic how the kits life had ended so violently. Perhaps there was a way to bring him back to her.

“He won't get her Hiei, I won't allow it to happen.”

“Good, you need to be on your guard. He's planning something but as of yet we are unsure as to what it is. Koenma will inform us of any new developments.”

Kurama's eyes darkened once more although Youko did not make a bit for dominance at the moment. Hiei had reminded him of a very important issue to the both of them by bringing up the Prince of the Spirit world. His voice became flat, emotionless. Hiei recognized the tone for what it was.

“And how exactly did Koenma know about what was going on with Kagome?”

Hiei wondered once more how he became the one to face the beginning of the Kitsune's wrath. He would much rather be elsewhere once the question was voiced but he knew that it had been coming.

“Yusuke decided to take it upon himself to bring your new relationship to Koenma's attention. He was concerned for your safety.”

“So it was him then.”

“Yes, he does not trust her.”

“Apparently he does not trust me either then if he thinks I cannot make decissions for myself.”

Kagome was growing angrier by the second. Perhaps it was her feeding off the negative energy that Kurama was giving off, perhaps not. At any rate hearing that the arrogant asshole from earlier had went to Kurama's boss infuriated her. Hiei looked at her with a touch of concern as he felt her energy spike. He wasn't particularly worried that she would purify either him or Kurama. It was more to the point that she did not have the energy to spare and what energy she did expect would light her whereabouts up like a beacon to anyone who was watching. Namely Naraku.

Kurama felt it as well and repeated the gesture she had given him earlier but adding a gentle nip to it signifying he was willing to protect her and she could relax. He would deal with Yusuke, in his own way. He did not appreciate being treated like he was unable to make his own decissions.

They dealt with death on a near daily basis, each placing their lives in each others hands. If Yusuke couldn't trust him and had to go to Koenma over something so trivial as him choosing a mate then how could he trust him on the battle field. And now his trust had been betrayed by Yusuke's actions. Their working relationship as well as their friendship would be strained for a long time to come.

`Fuck that Red, there won't be a need to worry about it when I am done with him. He won't survive the encounter.'

`Youko we can't kill him as much as I might want to right now.'

`Bullshit, no one betrays us and gets away with it.'

`He won't get away with it Youko, but if we kill him we end up on the run. Do you really want to drag Kagome into that sort of lifestyle?'

`We're justified in this! Certainly Koenma could understand!'

`He wouldn't and you know it.'

If that's the case then we'll just have to see how much we can make him bleed. And that process can occur over a long period of time. I'm willing to give him the time he needs to recover before beginning again.'

Kurama shut out the mental images that Youko was giving him at the moment of graphic torture of a certain Toushin. Honestly he felt like killing Yusuke himself without Youko's help but his practical side kept him from acting on it. Hiei just watched the internal argument with interest. Heaven help Yusuke when Youko managed to get out again.

“Kurama?”

His attention was once again jerked down to the woman in his arms. She seemed to be waiting on him, wanting his full attention. Whatever it was she had to say he had a feeling was important.

“Something wrong?”

“Not really, I need to ask you something.”

“Anything Kagome, you know that.”

“Well to start I need to tell you, Inuyasha has been visiting me in my dreams. And it's not just my subconscious making him up, he's actually coming to talk to me.”

She certainly had everyone's attention at that point. Souta once more looked ready to cry. Hiei was regarding her with rapt attention, it was a look no one was used to seeing on his face. Kurama went completely still, this was something that he had not expected.

“What has he wanted?”

“The first time he wanted to talk about you and let me know he approves of you. This last time he came with information about Naraku and he asked me to promise him something.”

“Go on.”

“The first thing is Naraku had a magician alter the spell on the well. Anyone with demon blood in them can now pass through. He brought Kanna, one of his detachments through with him. Kagura is in this time as well somehow, he said she waited the five hundred years.”

“Koenma will need to be told of this news.”

Hiei nodded, he would inform the Prince of the Spirit world but first he wanted to find out what else the Inu Hanyou had told the girl. Any information at all at this point would be of a help to them.

“He asked me to promise him that either myself or you would go through the well and go to Kaede's village. He said to give you the Tetsusaiga and have you keep it with you at all times.”

“I thought the Tetsusaiga was a family heirloom that only worked for Inuyasha.”

“It is, but he said since his fang is in the blade and he is giving it to you that it will work for you. He said you can use it because of your desire to protect me.”

Kurama wasn't necessarily thrilled at the idea of wearing a katana. That was Hiei's field of expertise even though he knew how to wield one. But there was obviously a reason behind the request. It took massive amounts of energy and willpower in order for the dead to invade a persons dreams. He would do as Inuyasha requested for that reason alone.

“Fine, I'll go but not until tomorrow. Hiei, I do not wish to take her with me since I do not know what might be on the other side of the well waiting. Will you stay with her?”

“Hn.”

“Thank you Hiei. Kagome, you'll need to tell me how to get there and give me something that Kaede will accept as proof that I come on your request.”

“That's not a problem, I'll write her a note. She will recognize my handwriting easily.”

“Good enough, I'll be back tomorrow. I must speak to Koenma.”

With those parting words Hiei disappeared as quickly as he had come once again scaring Souta off the couch. It wasn't natural for someone to be able to move that quickly. Not even Inuyasha had been that fast. It was disconcerting.

***************************************************************** **********************

Naraku had arrived at his castle shortly after the brief confrontation with the Spirit Detectives although he was not aware yet that that's what they were. Kagura had been most displeased with his arrival. She had forgotten her place over the years that he had been gone.

It was a situation that was quickly remedied, he had her screaming in pain within the first five minutes of his arrival. Afterwards he had interrogated her mercilessly on the events that had transpired since he had vanished from the Feudal Era.

The wind witch was a wealth of information which greatly pleased him. It hadn't taken much coercion to get her to spill the knowledge to him. It was from her that he learned of the split between the three worlds. Most demons had been pulled to the Makai, it had been his spell over the castle that had prevented Kagura's relocation.

Naraku gazed out over the lands his castle sat on, contemplating the knowledge he had gained. He was unsure what he wanted to do first. Conquer Makai or the human realm first. He was weighing the pro's and con's of each one when he felt the flair of a very familiar power. It would seem the little Miko was back home, soon it would be time to put his plan to take her and the jewel into action.

Reviewer Responses:

No new reviews from anyone on AFF *Breaks down and sobs hysterically* okay I feel better now. Wait, same thing for FF. *repeats above action* Okay Now I am done. :-D

Rabid: I thought it was very scary. Perhaps someone will be willing to take that story on. For some reason I'd have the pairing Naraku/Kagura. Why? I'm not sure, Naraku is twisted so it just sort of fits. You're right about Youko and the car thing. He would badger Kurama until he got moving. Still not a task I'd care to undertake though. I used to walk a lot…. Until I started writing anyway. Now my movement is limited to moving through the house. Bathroom, kitchen, bedroom. Yep, that's my world anymore lol.

killerkitty1106: Probably not anytime soon. Perhaps after Kurama saves Kagome a time or two.

ice_princess_1185: we now how Souta's reaction to Hiei, not sure how the others will react to him in the next chapter.

Shabopo: You're right it does. I'm sure it's going to keep coming up for a while since Yusuke is going to want to keep an eye on her until he deems her trustworthy around the team and it's not going to sit well with Kurama. Although I expect that Kagome might beat our favorite Toushin into submission for causing the problems to begin with. That could be amusing in itself. :-D

Sesshy81: Sesshoumaru will make an appearance sometime soon but he won't have a major part in this fic. At least not the way the story is going at this point. I'm not sure if Yusuke is going to run into dad or not at this point. Probably not, I still do not feel comfortable with his character among others. It would help if I had actually seen the show. But that will be changing shortly I hope.

phoenixs_paiste: I'm telling you, if it's an IY-YYH crossover where the main pairing is Kagome/?? Then I've likely read it. Unless it was just impossible for me to read anyway. There's been a few that I've refused to attempt to wade through due to spelling issues and such. I touched briefly on Naraku and Kagura's reunion but not much. Expect more from them later on. As for my name it comes from the IY anime, he was the dragon responsible for fatally injuring Inuyasha's father. Short page on him here http://www. absoluteanime.com/ inu-yasha / ryukotsusei. Htm just remove the spaces. I don't remember the literal translation of the name though.

inuyuyu_15: I don't mind Inu so much but I have a definite preference for either Kurama, Hiei, Yusuke or Sesshoumaru paired with her instead. It's rare that I read a Inu/Kag pairing.

That's all for now, maybe another chapter later tonight depending on if I get tired or not. Until next time, thanks to everyone who reviewed!
