Chapter 26

Dinner had been a quiet affair that evening. Mrs. Higurashi had decided on making oden for the night, a small celebration if you will since Kagome had come home. It was after all her favorite meal and she always cheered up when her mother made it.

What surprised everyone there was when Kurama offered to help her cook. She graciously accepted his help, very surprised when he appeared in the kitchen asking if there was something he could do. She was surprised further when she noted how skilled he seemed to be in the kitchen. He noticed her reaction and fought back an amused grin.

He had existed for several hundreds of years, why wouldn't he know how to cook? He previously had no mate, and while he had servants at his home when he lived in Makai he didn't take them with him when him and Kuronue had went out on their jobs. Learning to cook had become a necessity. One that Kurama found that he enjoyed. Now everyone was benefiting from the experience that he had acquired in that field and complimenting him on how fine of a cook he was.

Youko of course preened under their praise, it was to be expected that anything he did would be perfect. He simple would not allow himself to be considered inadequate in anything he chose to do. Of course this spilled over into Kurama however he was a bit more polite than his counterpart when it came down to it.

After dinner they had all gathered in the living room once more to talk. Kagome's family was quite curious about the life Youko had lived since it was he who was actually bonded to her at that point. Youko of course wanted to be the one to come out and explain everything to them but he didn't think that would necessarily be the wisest option.

Youko was incredibly proud of everything he had done, and of his reputation. Neither of which would be viewed as good points by the Higurashi's. So the Kitsune ended up watching from the inside with distaste as Kurama heavily censored the tale of Youko's previous life. They really did not need to know that Youko was in fact a ruthless killer formerly. Truth be told, he still was and if they were to find that out then they would definitely harbor bad feelings about him being under the same roof regardless of the fact that he was also protecting them.

Kagome of course would understand, she lead a different sort of life than the others. Most people would not accept the kill or be killed law that every demon lived by. She was the exception to the rule, having lead a similar existence since she fell down the well.

“You held back with them.”

Kurama looked up and saw Kagome leaning against the doorframe. She was supposed to have already gone to bed, the rest of her family having done so almost half an hour ago. Her eyes held nothing but understanding in them. She knew what he had done and was grateful. He left her family with their illusions, that perhaps things weren't as bad as they actually were when it came to the life that she and the others had led.

“I did, there is much about Youko's past they have no need to know about.”

“You're right. My family has seen a lot of things but there is much more that I have shielded them from. I may have come home bloody a time or two but until recently much of what I did was like something out of a movie to them. Torn outfits, some bruises and blood. Special effects but no real danger, you know?”

He nodded, it would make sense after all. How many families would be accepting of their teenage daughter going off to fight monsters? If they could actually see the truth of the situation and not just the after effects they probably would have forbidden her from traveling to the past again. Somehow though he doubted that would have deterred the girl.

“It would make things much more difficult on you knowing that they knew exactly how much danger you were actually in. They would worry more and it would be harder for you to leave when the time came.”

“Exactly, if my family knew everything that has happened they'd likely try to destroy the well or something so I couldn't go back.”

“You might be right. How are you feeling?”

Kagome shrugged, she was tired as usual. She was beginning to wonder if she'd ever feel like her normal self ever again. Somehow it was doubtful she decided. She really had not wanted to go to bed, every time she had done so when Kurama was not near her dreams had taken a turn for the worst. Normally he would sense it and come to comfort her but with the arrangements her mother had decided on it was unlikely to happen here.

“I've felt better but I've also felt a lot worse. I'll live, how are you holding up? Dealing with my family is not exactly the easiest thing in the world to do.”

“Their just worried about you, we can accept that even if Youko is a bit irritated by the sleeping arrangements.”

“I know and I'm sorry about that. Perhaps after she gets to know you she'll be more accepting.”

“I hope so. You should go to bed, Hiei will be here early in the morning most likely and I'll need to talk to Koenma before heading through the well.”

Kagome had almost forgotten about the trip that he was going to be taking. She went to the desk and withdrew a stationary pad and a pen to write Kaede a note. She thought about what she should put in it, Kaede was not the most trusting of people with good reason. She hoped that a note would be enough to convince Kaede that she had indeed sent Kurama.

Kaede,

I am sure by now that you have heard what has happened to our group. I managed to make it home to my own time though I was badly injured. I am sending Kurama to you on Inuyasha's request. It is a long story but I am asking you to trust him, I will be coming back soon to resume shard hunting and he will likely be traveling with me. We need the Tetsusaiga, Inuyasha has come to me in a dream and requested that Kurama be the one to wield it now that he had passed on. I will explain more upon my return.

Kagome

She folded the letter and sealed it in an envelope before handing it to Kurama. His fingers brushed against hers and lingered there for a few moments before withdrawing completely. She smiled gently at him, it would seem that he craved physical contact just as much as Youko did.

Kagome bid him goodnight and went back up to her bedroom. She would not be surprised to see her mother come down periodically through the night to make sure that Kurama had remained downstairs. She didn't need to be caught down there alone with him.

Kurama watched her go and sighed gently. Tomorrow was likely to be an interesting day, he wasn't exactly looking forward to any aspect of it except perhaps when he came back from this little side trip. He wondered why exactly Inuyasha would give him the sword. Was the Tetsusaiga that powerful that he would have need of it against Naraku?

It was more likely just a case of the Hanyou's spirit wishing to protect the girl even after his death. He felt a pang of jealousy and wondered whether it was only Youko's emotions that he was currently feeling. He along with Youko worried about the fact that Inuyasha was able to come to her in her dreams. They had her in a way that he could never hope to have yet there was still the concern that eventually he would interfere in their relationship. It was silly really, Inuyasha had told her to accept what he was offering.

`It's not silly and you know it. What would happen if Koenma decided to bring him back to life? Do you think he would be able to put his feelings for her aside then?'

Kurama did not have an answer for the kitsune's questions, he didn't want to think too hard on them either. If Koenma saw the need he would certainly have no issues on bringing him back to life and he knew that it would cause problems between the three of them. Four if you counted the fact that it was him along with Youko involved. He had to forestall any possibility of Koenma bringing Inuyasha back to life.

If they were going to defeat Naraku they were going to need help and there was two people Youko trusted implicitly, one of which was dead. The other would more than likely be unable to travel to the past due to paradox issues. It was going to be difficult enough for him to go back as it was. Youko was going to need to go into complete remission in order for it to have a chance at working.

`We will address the issue in the morning when we see Koenma. In the meantime you promised I could be the one to come out at night.'

`So I did.'

Kurama gave control over to the kitsune and it wasn't long before it was Youko that was the one that was perched on the couch in Kurama's place. It was going to be a long night he decided, his tail twitching occasionally in agitation. He wanted to be with Kagome and he could feel her feelings echoing through the bond they shared.

She was feeling almost as uncomfortably as he was, tossing and turning unable to get to sleep. Of course she was not aware of the fact that much of the agitation that she was feeling was in fact Youko's. Having had enough she finally decided to try some meditation techniques to try and calm herself enough to sleep. Thankfully it worked and it wasn't long before she was sleeping quietly. For a little while anyway.

***************************************************************** ************************

Naraku contemplated his options of what to do for the night. He could torment Kagura more which he had already grown bored of, he could go out into the city to find someone to play with or he could see how much he could torment the little Miko.

He thought about it for a while and then summoned Kanna. He would check up on the Miko and then make his decission. He might not be able to attack her directly yet but that did not mean he could not invade her dreams to torment her. He was certain that she was now aware of the fact that he was there.

“Show me Kagome.”

Kanna obeyed her masters orders and her mirror glowed with an eerie white light before the requested vision appeared showing Kagome in the first stages of sleep. He touched the mirror, caressing the image of her face and smiled as she whimpered and turned away from the ghostly touch that she had felt. He could easily kill her now but that was no longer his desire. No, he wanted the Miko for himself. But until he could take her this would have to do.

Yes, this would prove to be good entertainment he decided. Forcing his energy thought the mirror he sent her into a deeper sleep, one that she would not awake from until he decided to let her go he watched for her dreams to begin.

******************************Dream Sequence***************************

Something wasn't right and she knew it. Just by looking at her surroundings she could tell. It was incredibly dark and gloomy, almost as if she had been sent to some sort of shadow realm. She walked, hoping that the scenery would change to something more pleasant. Weren't you supposed to be in control of your dreams? If she was then they weren't working like they should for they refused to obey her command.

It was lonely here, she had not seen or heard anyone at all. She couldn't even feel Youko's presence any longer and it disturbed her. Where was he anyway? Surely he would not have left her but how else could she explain the empty feeling?

Suddenly Inuyasha was there and his entire demeanor only confirmed that something was wrong. He was tense and wary as he walked up to her, keeping an eye on their surroundings. Naraku was close and he knew it although he was uncertain how he was managing to invade the girls dreams and manipulate them so.

“Kagome you need to wake up, it isn't safe here.”

“Inuyasha thank god you are here. What is going on?”

“It's Naraku, somehow he is here in your mind. You need to wake up.”

She tried desperately to pull herself out of her dream and into wakefulness but something was preventing her from doing so. Inuyasha tried to help her the best that he could but it cost him most of his energy every time he came to her like this. The best he could do then would be protect her from whatever was coming.

“I can't do it Inuyasha!”

“Stay close to me until we can figure out how to wake you up.”

She clutched one of his sleeves while he glared at the surroundings, one hand on the hilt of the Tetsusaiga ready to draw it at a moments notice. It didn't matter that his body was no longer near the sword. He was connected to it all the same and he would use that connection in her dreams. He hoped the Fox would realize there was something wrong soon and come to wake her.

Naraku materialized before them, calmly evaluating the situation. He appeared as the Lord Kagewaki, seeing no need to disguise himself in his baboon form. He smirked at their reactions, so they had been expecting him. How fun.

“Do you like what I have done to the area?”

“Fuck off Naraku, we aren't here to play your games.”

“Oh I agree, you aren't here by my choice. The Miko on the other hand is. How else do you think she got here?”

“Let her go you bastard!”

“I think not. I wish to play with her, without your interference. Be gone and perhaps I won't kill her while she sleeps.

Kagome wondered if that was even possible for him to do. It was just a dream right? Nothing could happen to her from a dream. All she had to do was deal with it until she was able to wake up. It couldn't be that hard to do, only a bit scary.

“You won't touch her Naraku.”

Inuyasha drew the Tetsusaiga, transforming it into the mighty fang that could bring massive amounts of death and destruction. He launched himself at Naraku, praying that he could keep the Kagome safe from this monster. However he could not manipulate the dreams like Naraku was able to do and the bastard used that fact to his advantage by vanishing moments before the blade would have struck him down.

A few seconds later he reappeared directly behind Kagome with one clawed hand clutching her neck. He squeezed slightly when she gasped in surprise, the claws slightly piercing her skin. Inuyasha turned and looked on in horror realizing he had left her vulnerable to the bastard and that Naraku now held her life in his hands. He could smell the blood that was trickling down her neck from the puncture wounds he had inflicted.

Inuyasha growled low in his chest, unable to charge. He knew that whatever injuries occurred here in this dream state manifested themselves on her physical body. That was the only reason he had not resumed his attack on the bastard, he would be risking Kagome's life in the process. All Naraku had to do was squeeze and he would crush her throat.

“That was unwise Inuyasha. Perhaps I should make you watch as I torment your love. Would you enjoy that?”

Naraku leaned down, placing his lips on the girls neck giving it a slow lick, tasting the blood that was running down. She was incredibly sweet, the taste of her power invigorating. He would be certain to try this again when he had her in his castle.

Kagome whimpered, afraid to move as he savored her blood. The pain was incredible, her neck always having been incredibly sensitive. Her eyes widened as his free hand moved down her body and grasped the inside of her thigh. She couldn't help the cry of pain that escaped her lips when he dug his claws viciously into the skin, drawing blood once more.

**********************************End of Dream Sequence************************

Youko's ears twitched every now and then at the various noises he heard in the room. Someone turning over in bed, the snores coming from her grandfathers room. He knew that Kagome had finally settled down enough to sleep but he began to grow concerned when he heard a whimper coming from her room.

He was debating on whether or not he should go up there. It was quite possible she was having another nightmare that he would need to awaken her from. Or it could just be a noise she was making in a dreamless sleep. However when he felt a wave of terror through the bond he began making his way up to her bedroom.

His nose was assaulted with the smell of her blood then and a scream sounded through the house. He raced the rest of the way up to her bedroom making his way to the door just as her family all came out of their own bedrooms wondering what was going on. He registered the shock on their faces when they noticed that he was the one that was dominating the body but he ignored them. Kagome was his number one priority.

Souta, her mother and grandfather followed him into her bedroom closely after him anxious to see what was wrong with Kagome. She was laying on the bed, covered with a sheen of sweat. They could see the stark terror on her face as she shivered violently as if she were unable to move.

Youko picked her up and placed her in his lap, frowning when he saw the blood that was running down her neck and the growing stain on her leg. He did not sense anyone in the area but the injuries were definitely claw marks. He had to wake her up.

“Kagome wake up love.”

He shook her gently, but he was not getting a response from her. She cried out again and more blood appeared, this time from a gash in her arm that hadn't been there before. His eyes narrowed dangerously. He now knew what was going on and how to counter it. He would have to strengthen the bond with the infusion of more blood and use it to call her out of her nightmare.

Kagome's family looked on wide eyed with horror as they watched the girl they loved screaming in pain as new injuries appeared on her body. None of them could come up with an explanation for what was going on, all they knew was that if anyone would be able to stop it, that it would be the Spirit Kitsune that was holding her closely.

Once more Youko slashed through his own skin, bringing his blood pouring forth before he placed it over one of Kagome's wounds. He felt the energy melding with hers, strengthening the bond before he sank himself down into a trance forcing the connection to allow his entrance into her dreams.

********************************Dream Sequence**************************************

Kagome felt a wave of relief when a new figure joined them. Naraku on the other hand snarled in fury at the newcomer. Who had dared to invade the little fantasy that he had created for himself? He had never seen this demon before and he was unsure of exactly what he was to the girl. It was no matter though, just another to bear witness to what he was doing to the girl.

Youko snarled when he saw the position that this demon had his mate in. He had dared to touch what was his and he had injured her. He had caused her pain and terror. For that alone the bastard must die.

“Who are you to be trespassing where you do not belong Fox?”

“Youko Kurama, your executioner.”

“I think not, begone from this place, you have no business here Kitsune.”

“On the contrary, I have every right to be here. Release my mate. Now.”

Youko began gathering his energy for an attack. There was plenty of plant life here to use as a distraction until he could use one of his more deadly plants. As Naraku glared at him no one was expecting the arrival of another presence who had come when he had felt the energy surges from both Kagome and Youko. It had been easy enough for him to break in, considering who and what he was.

Hiei took in the scene and moved with lightning speed, pulling Kagome from Naraku's arms and out of the way so Youko could attack. Inuyasha positioned himself in front of the girl and the one who had removed her from danger, ready to protect them if Youko ran into trouble.

Naraku was not amused, his fun being taken away. It was no matter, he would kill the intruders and go back to his fun with Kagome. The fact that she had mated was disturbing to him but it did not matter. It just meant more fun for him when he ravaged her body, for the bond that the Miko shared with the Fox would punish her if she were to become intimate with another. It was just another way to bring pain to the girl who had irritated him for so long.

Youko pulled out his trademark rose and transformed it into a whip. At the same time, unnoticed by the hanyou he had allowed a single seed to fall to the ground. He smirked as he drove the bastard in the direction he wanted him to go, eventually working him to the spot that the kitsune formerly occupied.

“Now you die Naraku.”

Youko send a wave of energy into the seed he had dropped, willing it into sprouting into a tree with multiple mouths that glistened. Naraku was surprised as the tree moved towards him hungrily, saliva dripping from the jagged teeth. He screeched in pain as the first mouth found him and began to devour his arm. Before anything more could touch him he vanished in a puff of smoke, throwing himself out of the dream.

*********************************End of Dream Sequence***********************

Kagome awoke with a start and cringed when the pain she had felt in the dream continued to wrack her body. She sunk down deeper into Youko's embrace, wishing the pain would go away. It was then that Hiei came through the open window, startling her family

Kagome knew he was there without looking up, she had felt his presence approaching at a rapid pace. It would seem once more that both Youko and Hiei had saved her.

“Thank you both, for saving me again.”

“Hn. Has Naraku ever shown this ability before?”

“Wait a minute, just who are you Demon?!”

Kagome's grandfather had been stretched to the breaking point with his patience. It was bad enough she had attached herself to Inuyasha. Then she went and mated with the strange demon on her bed who was holding her. And now another demon who's aura radiated death to those who crossed him appeared in his granddaughter's bedroom. It was totally unacceptable.

“Who I am is of no concern to you human.”

Her grandfather was ready to go and get some of his ofuda's to attempt to exorcise the demons out of the house but Kagome stopped him before he could get out the door. A move like that could very easily piss Hiei off. She did not need a bloodbath in her room.

“Grandfather that is Hiei, he is a friend that has helped me.”

“What are you thinking of Kagome, associating with the likes of these two demons. You are a Miko, you are supposed to be enemies not friends!”

“Grandfather I am not going to allow you to insult my mate or my friend. They have done nothing to you to warrant your disapproval. Please stop.”

As entertaining as it was to see his mate stick up for him against her family she still had wounds that needed attending to. Afterwards they could sort all of this out and bicker to their hearts content for all he cared. He nuzzled her hair to get her attention. She turned towards him and he smiled gently, trying to defuse the situation although he knew there was another one that was going to erupt when he began her treatment.

“You need these wounds taken care of. Allow me to heal them?”

She nodded, thankful that he was willing to take the pain from her once more but she was concerned over how her family would react to his methods. Especially considering the wound on her thigh. She looked towards her family and steeled herself.

“Please, leave us alone for a few minutes so Youko can fix these up for me?”

“Absolutely not young lady. Whatever it is he needs to do he can do it with us in here.”

Kagome sighed, she knew that tone of voice and whenever her mother used it there was no sense in arguing with her. Her mind had been made up and there was no changing it.

“Fine, but don't yell.”

Youko laid her down on the bed after moving out from behind her. He was careful with his claws as he gently grasped her chin and tilted her head to the side to get a better look at the neck injury. Hiei positioned himself nearby ready to run interference if her family took offense to Youko's methods.

They watched, wide eyed as Youko lowered his head to Kagome's neck, gently bathing the puncture marks with his tongue. It took several passes before they were healed, Kagome fought against the feelings he was causing her.

Sure she had been aroused before now, but it had been nothing like this before. She steeled herself against the sensation of his tongue caressing her skin, and the feel of his warm breath tickling her ear. Youko smirked against her skin, he was very well aware of what he was doing to her. It was one of the reasons why he chose to do her neck first although he knew that he would have to keep his desire under control.

Hiei's expression remained unchanged but he wondered at his friends sanity, arousing the Miko with her family in the same room. He should have expected something of the sort from him though, he knew the Fox would be unable to resist such an opportunity.

Youko moved to the gash in her arm next, gently cleaning and healing the cut while his hand tenderly caressed her fingers. He snuck a look at her family, the grandfather was turning red with embarrassment as well as her mother. Souta on the other hand looked on with interest, he had been unaware that this particular healing technique was possible. However similar shouts of `What are you doing?' rang out when he began to remove the bottoms of her pajama's.

“She has a very deep injury that I cannot get to with these on. It will only take a moment to heal. Please refrain from shouting at me. I am only healing Kagome.”

“But it's indecent what you are doing. We can heal this the normal way.”

“Mom Youko has healed me before and he has never done anything inappropriate. I trust him, I'm asking you to do the same.”

Kagome felt like she would die from embarrassment but once more her thoughts and body turned traitorous when she felt his soft hands touching her bare skin. He gently spread her legs apart so he could get a good view of how much damage had been to the area. He could feel the heat radiating off of her body and struggled for a moment to control himself, the presence of Shuichi in his mind was of large help to him at the moment.

Her family had to turn away and quit watching as he cleaned and healed the final wounds that she had. While there was nothing “technically” wrong with the way he was healing her it made them uncomfortable to say the least. Kagome was cursing under her breath but Hiei and Youko could hear her perfectly well when she started grumbling about how she would make a certain Spirit Kitsune pay later for what he had done to her.

Youko moved to a sitting position and pulled her back into his lap, not caring that her legs were still bare. He nuzzled into her neck and whispered against the skin.

“I'm looking forward to it.”

Author's Notes: We almost lost this chapter, power went out as I typed up the last parts of it and I damned near screamed until I remembered that I had indeed saved it recently. I was going to throw a fit lol

Reviewer Responses:

inuyuyu_15 : Here's the update, hope it was fast enough for you lol Naraku has gone and pissed Youko off now as you can see. There isn't much hope for his survival now lol We will see more of the jealousy issue cropping up over Inuyasha although I don't think it will be anything major. Maybe an argument or two, we will see. Oh! Chocolate AND Soda! Yummm thank you

crazy-punk-gurl: That is an amusing thought, I kinda liked it. As for torture ideas feel free to send them this way. I'm always into new ideas on how to drive them crazy. I'm not sure how he's going to react to Koenma, haven't quite thought that far ahead which is sad sincehe is supposed to see him in the next chapter O.O

phoenixs_piaste: That would be one way for Hiei to amuse himself, I can picture the spark of evil glee that would be in his eyes as someone dropped down dead. Lol I leave it at complete meaning that particular chapter is done. Unsure if that is what it is SUPPOSED to be for but I am lazy lol It's a good question on the vision issue, I haven't seen a superhero yet that has needed glasses. Well, clark kent as superman but that was for show, not really needed. Now I'm babbling, eh well.

grapejellybean: I get bored easily, so I type a lot. It works out though, it keeps me busy and gives everyone something to read. 14 pages in word for this chapter. Ouch, I had no plans of it going so long but I couldn't help it.

Autumn Norris : Thank you for both reviews! As for the hyperness, did you get into my chocolate supply by chance? If so that's a good bet. *grumbles * I wanna be able to watch the shows on tv but as of yet, it's impossible. I had a choice, internet or cable tv. Well, here I am. Hopefully the situation will change soon. You can have Sessy, I don't mind. But Youko is mine mwahaha along with Kuronue's brother that I was so generously allowed to *ahem* have *smiles and spaces out* hmm? Oh yes, what was I saying? Oh yeah, I read one of your stories and reviewed it. I'll try to get to the other one soon. Somehow I don't see Youko allowing Sesshoumaru anywhere near Kagome unless he has no choice. One of those alpha male dominance issue things. Your comment on the fic idea I had reminded me of a question posed to a list I am on, damn it I cant respond. Asking who would win in a fight between Youko and Sesshoumaru. You post it to a Sess fanlisting and of course everyone will say Sesshoumaru! Post it to a Kurama fan listing, you'll get the opposite response. I'd like to post an unbiased opinion on it but my email won't work. Beh.

Rabid: It was but a thought, I'm not sure who I would pair up then for that particular story if I ever felt bored enough to do it. You're right though, it probably would be nothing more than comedy relief. As for the dream thing, theres more to it than I let on, that I won't give out until the chapter actually happens. I don't want to kill Yusuke at all, that would be a horrible waste… But mild torture here and there is acceptable in this instance. :-D

Shabopo: I haven't seen that icon yet although I could just picture it somehow. And you're right, he will check for their presence, and when he comes he'll be prepared.

ice_princess_1185: When Sesshoumaru comes into it, IF he decides to help them it will only be because he wants Naraku dead for what he has done. We won't be doing any “I'm making you my sister” or other similar ideas. I'm trying to keep him in character this time. As much as possible anyway.

inukuramaRmine: And I am happy for each and every review that you bestow upon me. Thank you!

moonlightdemonKita: My apologies, I must have missedthe review alert in the massive influx of email I had flooding my inbox.

Yusuke's Angel: Yup, I'm still interested I just haven't gotten the chance yet to go and look to see what is available yet. Are all the stories up for grabs or certain ones? I'll try and take a peek later tonight.

KogasHentaiLuver: I agree with you on Youko's actions but of course Youko isn't going to see where he was in the wrong on this one. They'll get it worked out eventually I promise. I can't guarantee that Naraku won't get his hands on her, it's more likely that he will but I will make it up to you somehow. Inuyasha will continue appearing through the fic and I'm going to bring Shippou back, I just haven't decided how that's going to happen yet.

Gem: I'm glad that you are enjoying it so well. More conflict to come for certain, but hopefully some good spots as well.

GEMINIS SHADOW: I wish I had several chapters already written up but unfortunately that's not the case. It would make things ever so much easier keeping up on the update schedule.I finally went to bed around five this morning. Woke up at nine with a splitting headache. I guess my body is rejecting the sleep idea. I have so many ideas floating around for fics right now it's making me insane. I have to finish this one first!
