Chapter 27
“I'll ask this again since you were interrupted so rudely last time. Has Naraku ever shown this ability before?”
Kagome thought about it for a moment. They had no idea exactly what all Naraku was capable to tell the truth. Shape shifting was a given, as well as mind control and possession. And now he had shown them that he could invade a persons dreams as well. While that would have been bad enough but he could inflict physical damage as well while in your dreams was terrifying.
“No, I've never heard of it before. How do you fight something like that?”
Both demons considered the question carefully. If one had sufficient mental barriers it may be enough to thwart any future attempts but Hiei already knew that with Kagome it just wasn't possible. Not only did she lack the proper training but her mental defenses just weren't on the same level as his. She would always be vulnerable to a mental attack if Youko or himself wasn't around.
Nor did he necessarily like the idea of having to guard her constantly. So far each time he had helped had been motivated either by curiosity, respect for her inner strength or the fact that she was Youko's mate. However he would watch over her since Kurama had requested it. No one could ever question his loyalty once it was given and Kurama was one of the very few that he would consider a friend.
“Hn. You'll need to stay close to either the Fox or myself until Naraku is eliminated.”
“How did he manage to get in my dreams like that?”
None of them could give her an answer. Usually the person that wished to invade needed a direct link to the victim and had to be fairly close to them physically in order to pull it off. Unless of course the person had the Jagan at there disposal such as Hiei did. No trace of Naraku was in the room so he hadn't been there, not in the physical sense anyway. There had to be another way he was doing it but they had no leads to go on.
“I don't know Kagome, but I promise you he won't have the opportunity to do so again.”
She wished she knew how Youko could be so certain of that. She needed to sleep and that would leave her open to attack. She looked to her mother who looked rather resigned at the moment. She had lagged behind after Souta and Grandfather had gone back to bed. If she was expecting Youko to have followed her out then she was sadly disappointed. He had no intention of vacating the girls bedroom unless she came down stairs with him.
“If we are done here for the night, I suggest we all go back to sleep.”
Hiei nodded and left through the window though he took up watch from the tree outside of her bedroom window. There was no sense in taking off now considering in a few hours he would end up coming back anyway. Besides, watching the interactions going on between Youko and the girls family was quite amusing.
With one of the demons taken care of Mrs. Higurashi turned to Youko and waited. The silence hung thick in the air as the calmly regarded each other, neither one willing to give an inch in the battle of where Youko was going to stay. Kagome fidgeted against Youko's chest feeling very uncomfortable with the rising tension in the room.
“Mrs. Higurashi I understand you are concerned with my presence in this room but I am not leaving unless she comes downstairs with me. Naraku could strike at her again and next time we may not be so lucky. I won't risk her life over what is or is not proper.”
She wanted to protest but found she could not. He had a point after all, it had been his presence and that of the other demon that had saved her daughter once again. It was becoming a routine that she feared getting used to. The realization that someone actually wanted her daughter dead was finally beginning to sink in.
“Fine, if either of you need me come wake me up. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight Mom.”
When she was gone Kagome could not help but sigh heavily. She had thought her life was complicated before but it did not hold a candle to how she felt now. It wasn't a feeling that she was particularly enjoying. Her thoughts wandered back to how Youko had made her feel earlier and her face began to tint pink. She couldn't believe her family witnessed that.
Hell, she couldn't believe that she had allowed him to do that in all honesty. Granted it needed to be done but still, the sensations came rushing back to her that his tongue had caused. She was thankful that the injuries had not been located further up her leg, it had been compromising enough as it was.
She wasn't sure how to feel about the way her body had responded to him. She felt guilty that she could respond that way to Youko. She had always intended on Inuyasha being the only one she would have any sort of intimate contact with and now that he was gone, it felt as if she was betraying his memory. But at the same time she knew that at some point it would be expected of her to consummate their relationship. If what she had done tonight was betraying Inuyasha then how much worse would she feel when they took that step?
Youko sensed how uncomfortable she was becoming though he was not sure what it was causing her to feel that way. He attempted to alleviate the situation the best way that he knew how, he tried to draw her into light play with him hoping to distract her from whatever it was she was thinking.
He lightly ran a clawed fingertip down the inside of her arm, careful not to break the skin as he nipped her ear. He chuckled when she gasped slightly, his breath tickling her skin reminding her of how it had felt elsewhere on her body.
“You were saying something about making me pay earlier?”
“Youko……”
She had meant to have her voice come out in a firmer tone then it did. Instead it came out in more of a pleading whine. Apparently though it pleased him for he repeated his actions, nibbling on her ear. Instinctively she titled her head to the side to give him better access when he started trailing light kisses down the side of her neck.
`Youko don't you dare!'
`What are you talking about?'
`You're taking advantage of her, stop it now!'
`I am doing nothing of the sort! She was upset, I'm giving her something else to think about.'
`You know where this is going to lead to though Youko. You can't do that to her.'
`You obviously don't have a very high opinion of me if you think I cannot control myself. I only want to make her feel better, I'm not going to bed her tonight if that's what you are thinking.'
Shuichi receded into the back of his mind rather reluctantly. He knew Youko wouldn't hurt her intentionally but the kitsune was intense. He could easily overwhelm her and carry this too far. It would cause them both to regret it later on.
Rational thought had decided it was going to go flying out the window and keep Hiei company once Youko began to kiss her neck. Kagome became lost in the sensations, her skin felt as if it was burning. She was going up in flames and loving it. She turned to Youko and gazed into his eyes, getting lost in their depths. This was a hunger there that she was positive mirrored in her own.
He lowered his lips to hers slowly, giving her every opportunity to pull away but she didn't. Instead she leaned forward to meet him. Her lips were like silk, soft, warm and inviting against his own. He teased them, gently nipping them coaxing her to respond. When she parted her lips he gave into the temptation and deepened the kiss for a moment, savoring her sweet taste. Reluctantly he drew back from her, knowing they needed to stop before they became too carried away.
“Kagome, we have to stop now or I won't be able to stop later.”
He could see the disappointment in her eyes, but he knew that she would thank him later. She hadn't properly mourned the hanyou's passing yet and was not ready for the next step. He could afford to go slow with her, they had the rest of their lives together. He pulled her in closer to him, pressing a light kiss to her temple before resting his head against hers.
“You should sleep love. I'll watch over you.”
Morning came much to quickly for Youko's tastes, he rather enjoyed the fact that she was asleep in his arms. Just a few more minutes he decided, closing his eyes. However it was not meant to be, for moments later there was the sound of someone entering the room and clearing their throat.
He knew it wasn't Hiei, he could clearly feel him outside in the tree. Awake and waiting, he knew better than to interrupt the time he was spending with Kagome. No, this interruption came in the form of Kagome's brother. Youko opened his eyes and looked at the boy, waiting for him to speak.
Though Souta had seen him last night he hadn't really gotten a good look at the kitsune and took note of his features. Now that he had the opportunity to really pay attention he couldn't stop staring at him. The resemblance was almost painful for him.
“Did you need something?”
Youko kept his voice low, hoping that Kagome would remain asleep for just a few minutes longer. Soon enough he would have to let her go so he could see Koenma and let him know what was going on, as well as ask him for a favor. He might still be on probation but this was important. He just hoped that Koenma would be willing to go along with his suggestion.
“Breakfast is ready, Mom is already downstairs waiting on you two.”
“Thank you Souta, please tell her we will be down there shortly.”
Souta left the room and Youko decided he could not put it off any longer. He gently shook her shoulder to wake her. She opened her eyes and smiled at him sleepily. It was amazing how relaxed he could make her and she really didn't want to move. She closed her eyes once more to go back to sleep.
“Wake up love, your mom is waiting on us.”
“Just a few more minutes. I don't want to move.”
Who could resist such a request when it was the same thing he wanted as well. A few more minutes however turned into fifteen minutes and it was then that her mother came up the stairs to see what was keeping them. She stood in the doorway, with a slight smile on her face. Neither of them had really moved from the positions they had been in when she had left, and the look on both of their faces was one of utter contentment. Perhaps she could trust her daughter to his care. She would reserve judgment for now.
An hour later and Kurama was once again in charge and heading to Koenma's office. Botan of course met him, she had been curious as to whether or not what Yusuke had said was true or not. She had never expected him to be the one to settle down and take a mate. She would have expected it out of Hiei before Kurama if she were to be brutally honest with the way Kitsune's generally looked at forming lifebonds.
Kurama knew why she was there, she had always been the one to come right out and pry the answers out of people when she wished to know something. He was just thankful it wasn't Youko she had approached, he would have told her to butt out of it.
“So?”
Kurama arched an eyebrow at her and waited for her to continue. It was obvious there was a question bugging her but he wasn't about to open the floodgate voluntarily.
“How did you get Youko to agree to settling down and allow you to take a mate?”
She wasn't prepared for Kurama to start laughing at her, she didn't see anything funny about her question at all. Kurama somehow doubted she would believe him if he told her the truth. Kagome had been Youko's obsession from the start, although she was rapidly becoming his own as well.
“She isn't my mate Botan.”
“She's… not? But Yusuke said…..”
“Yusuke was either misinformed or he wasn't paying attention to what was said. Either explanation is likely”
“Well that's good then, I was worried when I heard that you mated a powerful Miko. We wouldn't want you purified. You'll find a girl someday though, one who isn't a danger to you.”
“Who said she is a danger to me?”
“Well, more of a danger to Youko instead of you but Miko's hate demons. You should know that.”
Youko was getting agitated with the ferry girl. He disliked how she was making assumptions about a girl she really knew nothing about. It was insulting to him that she believed Kagome would ever hurt him, especially intentionally. Kurama decided it would be best if he set her straight before Youko attempted to take over and take her to task over her views.
“Botan Kagome would never hurt me or Youko on purpose. She's not that way I can assure you. Besides we've become rather attached to each other.”
“You're not seriously considering mating with her are you Kurama?”
“Why wouldn't I? After all Youko already has, it's only natural that eventually I will bond with her as well.”
He could have chuckled at the look on her face when he told her that little piece of information. She greatly reminded him of a fish out of water at the moment. He was saved from having to explain further when they arrived at Koenma's office.
The Demigod sat at his desk looking through a file, when they entered the room. He didn't bother looking up, instead he continued to look through the information before him.
“Glad you stopped by Kurama, Hiei filled me in on what happened last night with Naraku and said you would be stopping by today.”
“Indeed, I came to speak with you. I have two requests.”
Koenma looked up from the file, appraising Kurama. For him to ask of one favor was rare, for two it meant something extremely important was going on. Koenma focused all of his attention on the avatar. He would wait to hear what these requests were before making a decission.
“What are they?”
“For starters I have been asked to retrieve something from the past. The Tetsusaiga, sword of Inuyasha. He has been coming to Kagome in dreams and requested that I take the sword to protect her since he cannot.”
Koenma considered this. He really didn't have an issue with Kurama traveling through the well, it was likely that he would end up doing so anyway with the others when the time came to finish collecting the shards. Kagome couldn't go alone.
“Fine, I trust you'll be leaving today and you will report to me if anything happens?”
“Of course, which leads me to my second request. Kagome is not to go with me until I find out how dangerous it is and retrieve the sword. In light of what has happened last night I have asked Hiei to watch over her in my absence. Not to mention the time paradox that might occur if he were to go back in time anyway.”
“I don't think the others going with you is wise Kurama. I know you have unresolved issues with Yusuke at the moment and I am not sure how much good Kuwabara would do at the moment until the situation is evaluated.”
“Indeed, that is why I want you to do something for me.”
“What is it?”
“Bring back Kuronue for me. We've worked together for years, I trust him with my life. And since we will be dealing with Naraku we are going to need all the help we can get.”
Koenma wasn't certain if he could do that. Kuronue was known to be just as ruthless as Youko when he had been alive. They had been feared and with good reason. It might be perfect to have him on the team and Kurama trusted him but he was under no illusions that he could control him.
“I don't know Kurama. That might not be a good idea.”
“Koenma look at it this way, if you bring him back we have a far better shot of eliminating Naraku. If we can't kill this bastard then we are all dead and it won't matter anymore. Which is the lesser of two evils here? Bring back my partner.”
Koenma sighed, almost certain he was going to regret this. If something went wrong then they would all perish. If they killed Naraku and Kurama could not keep his partner in line then his father was likely to kill him for bringing him back.
“What about the time paradox thing with him, or had he already died by that time?”
Kurama chuckled at the question. While it was valid it just proved how inaccurate Koenma's files were. No, Kuronue had not been dead by then. In fact he hadn't been born yet. Kuronue was considerably younger than Youko, by a few hundred years in fact.
“You don't have to worry about that Koenma. Will you bring him back?”
“I suppose but I hold you responsible for him. You'll need to explain what is going on. I impress upon you the importance of this Kurama. If he gets out of hand he's looking at best being exiled to Makai, at worse father will send the SDF after him.”
“Leave it to me Koenma.”
Koenma was wandering around through this on a lot of assumptions about his partner. Kuronue was just as ruthless yes, but he also had a softer side that those that managed to get close to him could see. He also had a wicked sense of humor at times. He would let Koenma think what he wanted, really it wasn't up to him to change the perception the Demigod had of his partner. Kuronue could be the one to do that if he so chose.
“Meet me in the conference room in one hour Kurama.”
Koenma got up and walked out of his office, he would oversee this process himself. He was unwilling to leave it to the ones that normally started the process. Usually one such as Kuronue would have never been revived. It was just too much of a risk.
Reviewer Responses:
Shabopo: very embarrassing moment for everyone. I didn't specify where exactly on her inner thigh though so everyone can use there own imagination of exactly HOW embarrassing it actually was. :-D You might be right about the bite thing, I'll have to think on how to work that one. Hummm…. Glad you liked that chapter so well, this one was another fairly long one. My fingers are going to fall off tonight, I just know it.
inuyuyu_15: Hehe yup. Although with everything that's going to happen I think her family will be a bit more accepting of things between them. Mmmm Ice cream.. Chocolate chip cookie dough?
Natsumi Tsuchi-Ookami: Sorry about that, I just couldn't resist. But they were told to leave lol Their fault for not listening. I am evil :-D
ice_princess_1185: If you're a pervert I guess I am one as well. Lemons don't bother me as long as they are well done and the story doesn't revolve around them. Although an occasional PWP can be interesting. Eh well, things will start getting more touchy feely here and there from now on.
Seishin'jousha: The whole vine thing could be particularly interesting, I might work that into future chapters somehow. Kinky Youko, I can just imagine what he would do with them. The other characters will have more detail added as I get further into the story. Unfortunately I end up drawing things out to the extreme. Yusuke and Kayko will be coming up shortly, within the next four chapters I would say. You guessed right with my plans for Kuronue, I couldn't see bringing him into it any other way. And I gotta have him in the story somehow, I missed writing about him in the other stories honestly. I live for the strange pairings it seems, the story you mentioned sounds quite intriguing. It is quite irritating how they have FF set up with what is allowed. I was extremely reluctant to post the stories there. I'm certain one of these days someone is going to report me for something. I edited the lemons of the graphic detail but there is still some citrus in there. Eh well, until they ban me I won't worry about it much.
Rabid: Here is more fluff for you, hope it was good. Naughty Youko getting her worked up. I still want a fight scene between Yusuke and Youko, I cannot get the image of both of them shirtless out of my head. Maybe you could write it as a one shot. I'll certainly read it and leave a glowing review!
crazy-punk-gurl: The suggestions you gave me spawned another idea which will also allow me to bring his girlfriend into the mix and I'm sure she will like the idea I have for Yusuke. Mwahaha, let the torture begin.
Rose Fury: It should be a sin for him to be that good looking. I swear, imagine the puddles of goo the masses would become if we ever saw someone IRL who looked that good. Yum….
bloodbunny: Nope, I hadn't looked there. I'm running out of hiding places to search.
Krazykrispys: I'm glad you like the story so well. In answer to your question, Youko wins hands down. Followed by Kurama (Shuichi) in a close second. I cannot decide between Hiei and Yusuke. They're both high on my sexy-meter. But Kuronue wasn't on the list *pouts* He's tied with Youko for the #1 spot with me.
inukuramaRmine: I'm not sure if I would say I'm good at fight scenes really but I try my best. Normally when I write them, everyone either ends up dead or severely injured lol
moonlightdemon kita: Jaken as a squeaky toy is an interesting mental image. I can see his eyes bugging out even farther than normal if that's possible.
Yusuke's Angel: I'll take a look tonight and see if I have any ideas for the ones available :-)
Kagome-reincarnation: Here you go, thanks for reviewing!
whirleeQ: I am evil aren't I? I just couldn't resist, I had to have an excuse to start bringing out Youko's more *ahem* interesting nature and have Kagome be receptive to him. It worked out rather well I think *evil grin* Yup, Kuronue will be making his appearance next chapter. You're probably right about the servant thing. I may go edit that part of it if I'm feeling adventurous to hunt it down. We'll see what happens.
Gem: Yep, Inu will be Inu even if Kagome is no longer his so to speak. I try to keep them in character as much as possible even though I haven't seen the show. So far I've been told I do a pretty good job at it for which I am thankful. The appeal of the naughty badboys is just too great for me. I cannot resist.
Kura-kun's-lovr: He'll be in the next chapter, my apologies for it being so late I was building the suspense. I think it worked. He'll be paid well I promise *starts looking at the balance of my bank account.* As for Kuronosuke's hand issues it took me two minutes to find out about that, though I promise you I did not mind one bit. He's rather Ermmm… talented with those hands among other things. *gets felt up once again* Ummm, he'll call to talk to Kuronue later… Much, much later… Mwahaha Gotta run!
Thanks to everyone who reviewed! Until next time.
