Chapter 28

He walked to the conference room as he had been instructed to at the appointed time and stepped through the door. Two sets of eyes snaps towards him immediately. One set looked at him with a sense of relief in them, the other set with wariness and suspicion. He wasn't surprised. Not by either reaction.

Youko was overcome with a sense of nostalgia when he saw him, he had never thought he would see his partner again. His death had to be the most painful memory he had lived with and now that he was back everything was right again. Well, almost everything. They still had to deal with Naraku.

“Kurama.”

The word was whispered, almost as if Koenma was afraid of the reaction his name would bring from the newly revived bat demon. At that word Kuronue moved away from the wall and stood in a deceptively relaxed position. Youko who was watching every move he made from within Kurama's head knew his stance well. He hadn't been told anything and was waiting for the explanation. In the meantime he was not going to be caught with his guard down.

“Who the hell are you?”

Kurama turned towards Koenma who nodded and walked out of the room, closing the door quietly behind him. Both demons watched him go before turning back to each other. Kuronue watched him warily, this person before him could not be his partner. He smelled human for one and although Youko had been skilled at illusions this one was just too perfect.

Kurama gave over to Youko's insistence to let him out. He knew there was no way Kuronue would just accept being told that he was his partner. He would have to see it for himself.

Surprise, that was the first thing he felt when he had seen white mist begin to envelope the redhead that had been called Kurama. Kuronue moved into a more open part of the room, ready to defend himself if necessary though he didn't think he would have to. Why would they go through the trouble of bringing him back to life just to allow this stranger to kill him. It didn't make sense, but then he had gone through some very strange events in his life.

When the mist cleared Youko Kurama stood before him. He again wondered what in the hell was going on, he hadn't expected this that was for sure. The Kitsune seemed to be waiting for some sort of reaction. As much as he had missed him, he wasn't going to accept that it was actually him. Not without proof.

“You take the form of my partner. Prove to me you are who you appear to be.”

Youko smirked, even though Kuronue had been dead for a while he was just as he remembered him. He hadn't changed much while he was in the afterlife, he was still the calm, distrusting bat he had been. It was comforting. Youko thought about what Kuronue would accept for proof. The events that lead up to his death were well known among the demon world so that would not do. His hand reached into a fold of his tunic, withdrawing a pendant. It was one Kuronue was extremely familiar with.

“This was the reason why you were killed. You lost it on our last job together. It was given to you by your sister just before she died. She asked you to wear it always as a way to remember her by.”

Kuronue smiled then, a true smile. Youko was the only one he had ever told why he refused to be without that pendant. He must have somehow become someone extremely important in order to get the Prince of the Reikai to bring him back to life. He wondered where they were going to go from there and for what reason he was there.

“It has been a long time old friend, I must say you've become more skilled with illusions then I thought was possible. You had me fooled, I thought you were really a human.”

“That Kuronue, is a very long story. I need your help but before we get into any lengthy details let us move to a more comfortable place to talk.”

Kuronue shrugged, it mattered not to him although he didn't necessarily want to stay in Reikai any longer than necessary. He watched with interest as he changed once more, leaving Kurama in charge. He followed behind as Kurama made his way back to Koenma's office. Kurama needed to assure the Demigod that everything was alright and that he was taking Kuronue with him.

He stepped through the door after knocking once and stood before Koenma's desk. He had his interest absorbed in that file once again and Kurama couldn't help but wonder exactly who or what it was that he was researching. Shifting position slightly he was able to get a view of what the file contained. A name caught his attention. Kagome Higurashi. Koenma was investigating his mate.

***************************************************************** **********************

When Kurama had left earlier Kagome took it upon herself to invite Hiei inside. Although he would have preferred to remain outside and away from her family he needed to stay close to her. So he steeled himself and entered her home, waiting to see if he was going to have to tolerate the distain of Kagome's family.

He was slightly surprised, the only person who was glaring at him was the girl's grandfather. And even the annoyance that came from that did not stay long since the old man quickly excused himself with the excuse of the courtyard needed to be swept. It was fine with him.

He maintained watch while the siblings engaged in harmless banter. It was obvious they were close to each other. He wondered if things would have been different in his life, would he have had a similar relationship to his sister? Not for the first time he silently grieved for what could have been, but there was no use dwelling on the past and uncertainties. No, he would deal with the life he had now. Including the fact that somehow he had become a bodyguard to a Miko. There was some God out there that was having great fun at his expense. He was sure of it.

Eventually the boy had wandered off, he had made plans for the day to visit a friends house. His departure meant one less distraction for Hiei to worry about but it left Kagome bored and worried. And since everyone else was either gone or busy with something she turned her attention to Hiei.

“You seem more distant than the day we first met. What happened?”

Hiei gave her a glare, life had happened plain and simple. She was right, he had changed from that first day. He had grown colder, more distant, and wiser. So why was it that he felt comfortable around her. It was almost the same way he felt when he was around the Fox. Perhaps that was it, the influence of their bond.

“Fine, if you don't want to talk to me I understand but you don't have to look at me like that.”

His expression softened a fraction, which made her smile again. He fought to keep from sighing. He didn't know what it was about her that caused him to feel like this. It was almost as if she were the same as Yukina, needing to be protected and watched over. He hoped the Fox would return soon.

***************************************************************** *************************

Kurama thought about the manner he should approach this. Koenma had the right to check up on any being in the three realms if he saw fit. And it was not surprising that he was in her file considering everything that was going on. However Youko was very protective of her and if Koenma was looking for something he felt he had a right to know.

`Ask him!'

`Youko calm down. I just can't demand to know why he is in her file.'

`Fine, let me out. I can!'

`Youko might I remind you that he just did us a huge favor. Do you really want to piss him off after that?'

`Fine, handle it your way.'

`I will, thank you.'

“Is there something about Kagome I should know about Sir?”

“Eh? Oh, no, no… I was just updating her record, making sure all the information we had on her was correct. You know if there was something wrong you would be the first one to know. I had an interesting visitor while you were in the conference room.”

“Who?”

“Well it would seem there was two members of her old group who had turned down multiple reincarnation opportunities. One is a kitsune by the name of Shippou, seems he wanted to wait until Kagome's time to be reborn. I was considering it although I chose another option.”

“Interesting, according to Kagome they were like siblings.”

“Exactly, and he has knowledge of your current mission. He might be of some use to the team which is why I did the same for him as I did with Kuronue.”

It was then that the door burst open and let in a very excited kitsune kit who was anxious to get going. He wanted to see Kagome again, after all he had waited five hundred years for the opportunity. This talk garbage could wait for later, he had a sister to see.

Kuronue watched all of this silently, trying to piece together what was going on from the few clues that he had. Apparently there was a girl named Kagome that his partner was concerned about. This was slightly surprising, there was little that would bring out the kitsune's protective instincts. Only things that would be considered “his” and he doubted Youko would have settled down. Although a lot could have changed in the time he had been dead.

There was also the obscure reference to the girl's time which made no sense to him unless she was a time traveler. He would find out the answers later on, Youko would fill him in and they could get this “mission” over with. Then perhaps they could pick up where they left off.

“Shippou this is Kurama and Kuronue, they will take you to Kagome in a few minutes. Please settle down.”

Shippou walked up to Kurama and gave him a good once over. He had been watching with Inuyasha everything that had happened. He couldn't say he disapproved of the other kitsune because he didn't. They seemed to be well suited to each other in fact. He fixed him with a hard stare which seemed to amuse the other occupants in the room.

“I know of him. We've been watching the two of you. You've got both mine and Inuyasha's approval but if you hurt my sister even Prince Koenma won't be able to save you from us.”

Kuronue chuckled at this, a kit that had no business even being away from his family at such a young age was threatening Youko. He couldn't wait to meet this kit's sister. She must be quite the vixen in order to have caught his partners attention to the point her family was threatening him.

“Yes, well.. You three are dismissed, report to me if anything happens.”

Botan did them the favor of opening a portal for the trio and they disappeared through it, arriving on the shrine grounds. Shippou immedietly recognized the place from his memories of the photographs Kagome had brought with her on some of her visits. She was close and he knew it. Without waiting for the others he raced towards the house, hellbent on finding the girl he hadn't seen in centuries.

Hiei went on alert as he felt the approach of three demonic energies, only one of which he recognized as Kurama's. He didn't sense any threat from the other two but he wasn't going to allow them near Kagome without knowing who they were and if they were with Kurama or not.

Kagome felt them as well and immediately recognized Shippou's energy. He pushed past Hiei much to his consternation and bolted out the door. She hadn't gotten more than three feet out of the house before he had her arm in a tight grip, holding her back from her headlong rush.

A red blur streaked towards the girl heedless of the danger that waited just in front of the object of his desire. Kurama watched in horror as the kit neared Kagome. He was almost upon them when Hiei drew his sword, waiting for the kit to get close enough to attack.

“Hiei! That's Shippou!”

The name was familiar to him though he hadn't heard it in centuries. It was then the red blur skid to a stop in front of them as Shippou eyed the demon in black and his sword. It was indeed the kit, he had forgotten about him. He sheathed his katana and moved aside to allow the kit to approach, while keeping an eye on the other strange demon. He had a good idea of who it was, but he waited for confirmation.

“KAGOME!”

Once the danger was gone he launched himself at her colliding with her stomach. He had missed her greatly and judging by the tears coursing down her face she had missed him just as bad.

“Shippou how?”

“I asked Koenma for an interview and he brought me back! I missed you so much.”

“I missed you too Shippou… What of the others, will they be coming back?”

None of them missed the hopeful tone that crept into her voice, nor the disappointment that enveloped her when he gave her the answer to her question. She should have expected it, but it didn't stop the pain that she felt.

Kuronue snatched up on this new piece of information that had dropped in his lap even though it made even less sense for the over all picture. He had assumed that Kagome was another kitsune because of Shippou and the way Kurama was acting about the girl. It was therefore quite a surprise to him to find that she was human. Filing it away for later thought he paid attention to the drama unfolding in front of him.

“Sango and Miroku reincarnated, Inuyasha hasn't but he said he is waiting until after Naraku is killed.”

“I see… Well at least you came back to me. I never thought I'd see you again.”

She hugged him closer to her before noticing that Kurama had returned and with a friend. She knew he wouldn't be there long, he still needed to go back to the past to retrieve the Tetsusaiga.

“Let's go inside shall we?”

Hiei shrugged and went through the door followed by Shippou and Kagome. Kurama and Kuronue went in last but only after Kuronue told his partner that he expected a full explanation of what exactly was going on.

Authors Notes: I have gotten a request to turn this into a triangle between Kurama/Kag/Kuronue. I will say I'm not opposed to the idea since that has to be my favorite grouping as far as triangles go. It might be a bit hard to work in since Youko is in extreme possessive mode but if he were to be willing to share with anyone the most likely choice would be Kuronue. Then I just need to figure out the aspect of dealing with her families reactions… and Inuyasha's O.O I leave it up to you all, I'll try to think of ways to realistically bring him into their relationship in case that's what everyone wants. Let me know!

Reviewer Responses:

Natsumi Tsuchi-Ookami: We will find out, that part comes the next chapter. This just seemed like a good spot to end it on.

Shabopo: I'll do my best with him. He'll probably end up quite a bit like Kurama although not quite as laid back. Kuronue always struck me as the sort that was always in some sort of trouble or other and having a blast while he was in it. I'll be honest here, I'm not a big fan of Botan. I'm not sure why though. She's not going to be in love with Kurama if I can help it, though she's probably going to get told to butt out more than once by Youko. Other than that I'm not quite sure of what to do with her. I killed her off in one fic and people came chasing me down with pitchforks! O.O

Kura-kun-lovr: Kuronue is going to have the opportunity to help kick Naraku's ass to hell and back. Should be a fun time. Might even make it to where he is the one who ends up rescuing Kagome from Naraku's evil clutches while Youko is battling the evil bastard. Hummm could be interesting, we'll see what happens. I'm seriously considering your suggestion. It might be difficult to work in but I do so love a good challenge from time to time. And lovely, lovely one shot. I'd love to see you do more of them. If I could make a request maybe do one with Kuronue and Kagome? *drools* Hehehe

moonlightdemonKita: Yep, Jaken is now a squeaky toy hehe I'll read it first chance I get.

Thanks to everyone that reviewed, I got everyone but if I didn't I apologize. Until next time everyone!
