Chapter 42

A wave of hostile energy surged towards them, blanketing them in it's disgusting feel that screamed Naraku. Hiei growled and darted off towards the source knowing that the others were close behind him. Indeed they were, Kurama was a mere breath behind him while Yusuke and Kuwabara trailed behind. Truthfully Hiei was concerned, the hanyou should not have gotten past them. Now they were going to be fighting on his terms and he knew that Naraku played dirty. They would have to be ready for everything.

Kurama narrowed his focus down trying to block out the feelings he was getting through the life bond. Both he and Youko knew with the wave of energy Naraku had sent forth that Kagome could easily feel it and knew that they were about to become involved in what was likely to be a very bloody fight. It explained the severe distress and nervousness that was echoing at the moment. But they could not afford to be distracted, it could prove fatal. While Koenma might well bring them back it would cause everyone concerned undue stress over the entire situation and neither of them had any desire to go through that.

He could only pray that for once she would listen to him and not show up.

Hiei came to a stop at the edge of a clearing where a lone man stood waiting for them. His eyes narrowed dangerously, taking in the appearance of the figure in front of him. He was dressed in the white baboon pelt once more and the feel was off. `Figures, it's nothing more than another fucking puppet.'

Hiei leapt into action unsheathing his katana as he darted forward, intent on destroying the pawn in front of him. As he came closer to the target tentacles shot out of it like he had seen so many other times. Quickly he cut through them as he felt his companions arrive. Stabbing through the heart of the puppet he quickly finished it off, watching the wooden doll fall to the ground in peaces.

“Dammit this bullshit is getting old. Naraku get your fucking ass out here now you piece of shit!”

Haunting laughter echoed through the clearing in response to Yusuke's call. He looked around expectantly, it sounded as if it was coming from all around them, this was not right. Hiei came to rest nearby alert and ready for anything. Once puppet would have been far to easy considering the challenge that the hanyou had issued to draw them there.

“Stay alert Detectives, this is far from finished.”

Kurama could only agree with him. He extended his senses into the plant life that surrounded them, questioning them on their enemy's position. The information they gave him had his eyes widening in alarm. “We're surrounded.” He pulled out his rose, quickly changing it into a whip and holding it ready for the first wave of attacks. This was going to be bad, and there was not a damned thing they could do about it.

Kagura was far from happy as she surveyed the scene before her. She had nothing against any one of her opponents and would have been more than happy to abandon any ideas of fighting however Naraku had deemed it necessary for her to be involved. Truly she did not want to be here. With a sigh of resignation she opened her fan, the breeze immediately picking up in the clearing.

“I'm tired of this waiting, are you going to get out here or not you fucking coward?”

Seconds later clones of the puppet that Hiei had destroyed appeared, surrounding them while waving their tentacles menacingly. Kurama did a quick count and determined that there were ten of them, which meant that either two more were still concealed or they were something other than puppets. Regardless he had no time to speculate for two of them had begun to attack him in earnest.

Hiei darted at one of the ones that targeted him intent on slicing it to hell as he had done the last one but as he cut into it's tentacles a second puppet attacked as well intent of piercing his body. He wrenched himself out of the way in time and was immediately put on the defensive.

Kuwabara was fairing well against his puppet, only having to deal with one but every time he used his spirit sword to remove pieces of it, the damned thing just regenerated it's body parts back. Another puppet came up behind him suddenly aiming straight for his heart. It never reached its destination however for there was a bright flash of blue light as Yusuke's spirit gun engulfed it dissolving it on impact.

“Thanks man!”

Yusuke only smirked cockily before turning to another puppet intent on blowing another one straight to hell. He took aim once more, blasting one of the two that Hiei was dealing with, giving him the opening that he needed to take the offensive once more. He moved quickly, becoming nothing more than a blur to the average person, his sword glinting in the days fading light. Another puppet gone, it's body laying in multiple pieces. He crushed the wooden doll beneath his boot to ensure that it would never rise again.

Looking around quickly for the real Naraku he spotted the wind witch watching from the sidelines. However she was not attacking for the moment, he would deal with her later. For now they had these annoyances to deal with, he moved and came to rest by Kurama who was having better luck with his whip, it being a long distance weapon. However he was not unscathed, one tentacle had managed to break through his defenses grazing his side. His shirt was stained dark with blood however he moved as if the wound did not exist. He could worry about the pain later.

His whip lashed out wrapping itself around the neck of the puppet, decapitating it. Hiei moved in quickly finishing it off with his katana through its heart. A stray tentacle swung wildly as he passed, slamming him down into the ground. As he pushed himself off the ground he bit back a groan and contemplated loosing the dragon on them but decided against it. He needed to save that attack for Naraku, not these pathetic creations. His katana would have to be enough.

Kurama was feeling the pain in his side acutely but they could not slow down to tend to it. This fight was rapidly getting old and needed to end soon. He still had no idea who the final presence was in the clearing but he had the distinct impression that Naraku was long gone, fully expecting that his minions would be capable of finishing them off.

He threw out his hand, rose petals filling the air and slicing through the puppet before him like knives. The slight breeze aided them in the process of decimating the baboon look-a-like. He wondered what the wind witches part was in all of this; so far she was not participating. He would have to ask Kagome more about her, certain that she would know.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~

Kagome paced inside her room, desperately wanting to run to where she knew the fight was going on. She tried to calm herself but to no avail, she could feel Kurama and Youko's emotions and the worry that they both were feeling. She did not want to add to that, knowing they could feel what she was experiencing in return.

If only he hadn't demanded that she stay behind, at least then she would know what was going on. `They're treating me like a child! I swear when this is over we are going to sit down and settle this. I could have helped!'

Unwanted came the thoughts that perhaps they had reason to be treating her this way. After all she wasn't exactly a strong fighter even though her skills with a bow had gotten considerably better. Quickly before she could admit that those thoughts were right she shoved them back down. She refused to believe them, every hurtful thing that had been said only served to bring her down further and this just added to it. She refused to tolerate it any longer.

She looked at her bed where her bow lay innocently. She stared at it long and hard, it was as if it were mocking her with its mere presence. She sat down heavily next to it, her fingers tracing the wood almost lovingly. If she left not only would she have to get past Kuronue but also she would have to deal with Youko's fury. Not to mention Hiei would probably be furious with her as well. She remained undecided for several long minutes as she tried to figure out exactly how she would manage to leave the house if she decided to go.

She couldn't handle the inactivity and the uncertainty of what was going on. She concentrated on the soul bond. Something about the feel was off and it bothered her. It was as if it were an echo of pain. Worry flashed through her at that thought.

That echo of pain is what forced her decission. If Kurama were injured she would never forgive herself. It was her fault he had been dragged into this mess to begin with. Now she only had to fool Kuronue long enough to get to the battle site, she would worry about his wrath at a later time. She pulled back the covers on her bed and then went to her closet removing several articles of clothing and arranging them on the bed in an imitation of her sleeping. She placed her hands on them briefly and poured energy into them anchoring the power to her clothing. Quickly she replaced the blankets and grabbed her bow. She turned on the radio, keeping the volume low so no one could tell there was no movement coming from the room.

As long as Kuronue remained outside of the room he would not be able to tell that she was gone, the energy would be enough to “feel” like she was still in the room. To prevent him from coming in she locked her door, hoping he would think she was continuing to sulk. If he came in he would realize immediately that her scent was gone.

“That should do it.”

She quickly felt around, making sure of where everyone was before climbing out her bedroom window. It would not do to get outside just to run into someone. Quickly she made her way down the tree and disappeared from the courtyard. She would have to hurry, she had bought herself some time but she knew that it would not last forever.

Running as fast as she could she flared her senses to determine exactly where the battle was taking place.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~*~

They were all tired but still they fought on. They were down to three puppets left, and the wind witch who still had yet to make a move. Kurama's shirt was glued to his side from the first injury, as well as a few smaller ones. Hiei was probably in the best shape of them all but even he was bruised. Kuwabara had multiple gashes over his body but was still on his feet. Yusuke had taken to fighting with his fists; he had gotten tired of the puppets dodging his spirit gun. Consequently he was quite battered and bruised.

Kurama's senses suddenly flared. Powerful energy was racing towards them at a frantic pace and it screamed “Kagome” to both him and Youko.

`Fuck! We told her to stay home!'

`I know Youko and I promise you when this is done there is going to be hell to pay.'

Kagome slid to a stop just inside the clearing, surveying the damage to Kurama and the rest of them. She already had an arrow ready to fire at a moments notice. Her arrival did not go unnoticed by anyone there, all eyes turned to her. One of the puppets darted for her avoiding the arrow she loosed towards it. Kurama bolted towards her but knew he would not make it in time.

Kagome readied another arrow as she saw it coming. Yusuke saw this too and knew Kurama wouldn't be fast enough. He quickly fired a blast towards the puppet hoping it would strike it. However Kanna had finally made her appearance coming in between Yusuke and the puppet. Her mirror reflected the blast back towards him, throwing him back several feet where he landed heavily on the ground.

Hiei had already begun to move; he was the only one with any hope of getting there on time. His katana thrust through the puppet as Kagome's arrow struck through its chest, purifying it instantly. They turned back to the others and watched in horror. Kanna had turned her mirror on Kurama. The damage was already done; she had managed to rip Youko's soul out of their body entrapping him into her mirror.

Kurama dropped to his knees in agony, having Youko pulled from him was excruciating. However once the pain ebbed his remained on the ground, in shock. He felt so empty without the kitsune spirit inside of him and his mind was going into shock.

“Kurama!” His name tore from her throat, as if pleading that she had not seen what had just happened. They would have to fight Kanna to get Youko back, but she was not sure if he would be able to re-inhabit Shuichi's body or if he was lost to her. She raced to his side; the look on his face was one of pure shock. She'd defend him with nothing but her bow if she had to, until they could help him.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~

Youko was furious; he had felt the pull of the mirror too late to prevent his removal from their body. He had been too distracted trying to get to Kagome when it had happened. He had tried unsuccessfully to anchor himself, which was the cause of the intense pain that had been inflicted on his human half. But what he was going through now was to be expected. He had been a part of Shuichi since before birth; being removed was going to traumatize him.

He looked around his prison of glass, searching for a way out. It was dark inside the void, he could find now way to escape. That was not to say there wasn't one but it would take some time to search for it. However part of his magic would work in here and he used it to his advantage, creating his own little world around him. If he was going to be stuck for any length of time he may as well make it hospitable. Soon he was surrounded by a forest that reminded him of his home when he was younger. He took refuge in the bows of a tree and settled down to anxiously watch what was going on outside the mirror.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~*~

Kagome reached Kurama and fell to her knees in front of him. He stared at her dazedly, unable to even acknowledge that she was there in front of him. She placed her hands on his face, trying to pull his mind back.

“Kurama please hold on. We'll get Youko back. Please just hold on, I love you both. Please don't leave me!”

Tears coursed down her face as she tried to pull him back, he was going into shock and it was her fault that this had happened. She had screwed up by coming here and now Kurama was paying the price for her foolishness. Hiei came to stand beside her, alternately wanting to strangle and reassure her that everything would turn out okay. However the battle was not over yet. He launched himself at another puppet while she pleaded with Kurama.

`Kurama I swear if we all get out of this intact I will never question you or Youko again about staying behind. Please be alright, I can't live without either of you.'

One of the puppets gave an evil laugh, having heard her thoughts. “Little Miko you do not need to worry about living without them for your life ends today!” The puppet moved quickly towards the two of them. Yusuke was picking himself up off the ground with Kuwabara's aid. They watched in shock as the puppet moved. It was as if time had slowed.

Yusuke took one last shot, firing a blast of spirit energy towards the puppet. It hit just as the tentacle plunged through her back and erupted through her chest.

Blood bubbled up onto her lips as she tried to breathe. Pain burned through ever nerve in her body, blood poured through the wound soaking her clothing. She had no strength left and began to fall to the side only to be caught by Hiei who lowered her gently to the ground. She smiled up at him weakly as her eyes began to close. He knew she didn't have any hope of surviving this injury. For once he was truly afraid of how this was going to affect Kurama once he had realized what had happened.

Youko watched everything that had happened from inside the mirror, grief raged through him as he watched her take her final breath. His mate was dead, he had failed in keeping her safe and now she was gone.

Author's Note: As I said before DON'T KILL ME!! Things will work out I promise! Just give me some time, the next chapter will come out soon, I have a plan. Sorry for the evil cliffhanger but it was an excellent place to leave off. Reviews will be greatly appreciated. Flames ignored, don't complain to me about how I killed her off, it's all part of the plot so be patient please.

Reviewer Responses:

Audrey: I hadn't even thought of that lol

Gem: I try to keep things interesting though I think I'm going to get death threats this chapter lol

Autumn Norris: You know, I hadn't thought about dressing Naraku up in drag but the thought is amusing. Perhaps in another fic lol

Ralina: Thank you, I am glad that worked out so well. I hope I did a good job on this fight scene. Writing those always make me crazy.

Cyntinell: I trust this scene met with your expectations ;-)

Kogas Hentai Luver: I would never kill Hiei off, I love the sexy little guy way too much lol Kagome on the other hand is fair game, though she isn't going to stay dead. This sets my next chapter up perfectly which could very easily have a lemon in it if I can pull it together right. You're right about her being selfish and it bit her and everyone else in the ass hardcore this time. I'm afraid that she isn't going to be forgiven anytime soon.

crazy-punk-gurl: I'll have to check out barnes and nobles then. I want chibi Hiei and Kurama to watch over my writing lol Yep, Youko is my muse though like I said he tends to be very perverted in his ideas. I don't mind though, it gets rather fun. Yes, I liked your idea a lot, and this chapter was the beginning of putting it into use mwahaha.

Shabopo: I could have sworn that I included you in the reviewer responses. If not I'll have to go back and fix that oversight :-) I hope this chapter was just as unpredictable lol *hides from people wanting my head on a pike* it's getting dangerous around here. You're right Naraku is a chicken and always will be as seen in this chapter. One more huge fight scene to come and then he's done for. I think Kagome is in a world of trouble when all this is said and done, she'll never get another chance to put herself in danger again lol

Person...  : I think Kuronue has a bit more to worry about now since Kagome slipped past him. Poor Kuronue, I'll have to go easy on him. I don't want him in too much trouble.

Kin-chan Pandun: I hope this was a bit better as far as action goes. Thanks for reviewing.

tessie_fanfic: glad you like the revisions I have done on C.O.S. Yes, Hiei is still going to have a major part in the story. I'm actually adding him more into it than he was. The last chapter I put out has a bit more in it with him and Kagome.

ForestSprite: I love Kuronue as well. He's so much fun to play with in the fics.

Kagome-reincarnation: LOL yes you have.

Kitsune-Miko-Tenshi: Here you are, the latest chapter. More to come soon :-)

Kita: I took a break from writing for a while but I am back now. I haven't gotten a chance to read it yet but I promise I will do so soon.

Tenchi-No-Kaze: probably. I'm going to try and keep it under 50 chapters but I'm not holding my breath on that one. I love detail, I think perhaps I go a bit overboard at times though lol
