Commitments Made In Blood

Chapter 41

 

 

Naraku stood there contemplating the writhing forms of the humans who had dared to attack him. The moans of agony were like an aphrodisiac to him and for the briefest of moments he regretted killing the girl so hastily. These humans were of no threat to him; he could have indulged in her body for a while. The thought amused him. How frustrated would the spirit detectives become? It was obvious to him that they were not going to come in after him otherwise they would have already done so. And then there was that challenge, calling him out. He smirked; oh he'd give them what they wanted soon. He would just wait a few more minutes to make sure that Kanna was ready.

 

 

He thought of a way to get out of there. There were certain to be more of these pathetic creatures waiting for him outside and while they were of no real threat to him they would delay the fight to come and possibly give his adversaries an advantage over him.

 

 

That would just not do.

 

 

He stripped off his clothing and dropped them to the floor, uncaring as to whether or not he was seen. The humans with him more than likely were too delirious by now to even care if there was a naked man standing in front of them. The clothes of this era were distasteful, however they would serve their purpose for the time being. He ran a finger down a shirt that hung from a nearby rack. It wasn't silk like he preferred but it would have to do. He removed it from the hanger and donned the garment before reaching for a pair of jeans. He was surprised the outfit was so comfortable; it would give him no trouble with movement in the upcoming fight.

 

 

That accomplished he surveyed his human prey once more before choosing one man who was doing the best job of fighting off the effects of the poison. He grabbed him, viciously hauling him to his feet and forcing eye contact with him. It didn't take long for him to overwhelm the human's mind. He had no mental barriers to speak of which made everything easier.

 

Draping the human's arm over his shoulders he dragged him to the entrance of the building, schooling his face into a look of terror. None of the people out here had gotten a good look at him. Combined with the fact that he was helping an obviously injured officer out of the building had people rushing for him.

 

 

“Help us please!”

 

 

“What the hell happened?”

 

 

Naraku gladly handed the fallen man over and exerted his will on the mind link he had established. The officer began to explain how he had found the guy who dragged him out hiding in one of the stores before all hell had broken loose and that the others were still at a standoff with the fugitive inside, the girl dead. Another officer took Naraku off to the side for questioning before determining that he knew nothing and had just been caught in the middle. After getting information on how to reach him he released Naraku saying a detective would contact him at a later date.

The news spread like wildfire through the ranks that the girl had been slain. It did not take long before the news crews that were covering the story were making the announcement. Keiko sat on the couch in stunned silence; she could not believe that her friend since junior high was gone. `It can't be true, they had to have gotten there in time to stop him.'

 

 

Kagome looked at the girl sympathetically. She might not particularly like Keiko but she could certainly understand how she was feeling. After all she had lost her own friends to Naraku's insidious plans. She quickly grabbed a box of Kleenex when tears began to make their way down Keiko's cheeks. Mrs. Higurashi pulled the unresisting girl into her arms, trying to give her what little comfort she could. It wasn't much but hopefully it would be enough until someone who the girl was familiar with could take over.

 

 

Kagome's eyes hardened, the bastard would pay for all the pain he had caused. It was bad enough that he had destroyed entire families in his own era but now he was here and doing the same, affecting people who had no idea of the war that was going on. It would only serve to enhance the grief the families of the ones lost here, for they would not understand why their loved ones were slain. It would seem completely random and they would spend the rest of their lives asking why.

 

 

“You're not going Kagome.”

 

 

She turned and faced Kuronue. She had not even been aware that she had been walking towards the door. Kuronue looked at her with an unreadable expression. She was not sure what exactly it was that she was seeing in his eyes. Pity? Or was it perhaps sympathy?

 

 

Kuronue understood exactly what she was feeling. He knew that she wanted nothing more than to go and put an end to this miserable bastards life but Kurama would never forgive him if he allowed her to leave. It was his job to protect her and that was exactly what he intended on doing. The only way she was going to get passed him was if she incapacitated him, he only hoped she was not willing to go that far in order to get to the battlefield. He had felt the call that Hiei had sent out as well, it was only a matter of time before the fight started and it was likely to be a bloody one.

 

 

“Kuronue I have to go.”

 

 

Kagome hoped that she could convince him to let her leave but by the determination she saw in his eyes she knew that it was unlikely. They may have become friends but she knew exactly where his loyalties lay. He would not go against what Kurama had asked of him unless it was absolutely necessary.

 

 

“No you don't. If you go now you'll be a distraction and nothing more. Do you want to endanger yourself and everyone else by showing up?”

 

 

He didn't want to be cruel with his words but Kagome needed a good dose of reality at the moment. Her powers were still far from being controlled no matter how much work they had put into training her. Her presence would mean she would need a constant bodyguard and that would only hinder them in the fight for both Hiei and Kurama would be too concerned over her safety to give Naraku their full attention.

 

 

“Dammit Kuronue I can help. I'm not useless you know!”

 

“In this instance I am afraid that you are Kagome. Let them handle it, you'll only endanger them.”

 

 

Kagome turned from him, her bangs covering her eyes. She had thought that she had left the days of being told how useless she was long behind. Even Inuyasha had eventually stopped telling her that, knowing how it made her feel. `I'm stronger now, I know I am. Do they really think that little of me?'

 

 

Kuronue placed a hand on her shoulder. He hated doing this to her but it was for the best. Youko would more than likely be furious for what he was doing to her self-confidence after he had worked so hard to build it back up however it was necessary. They could work on it again as long as she was safe.

 

 

Kagome didn't want his sympathy; she didn't want him to try to console her. If he truly felt she was of no use then he was wasting it trying to make her feel better. She shrugged his hand off of her and walked out of the room without a backwards look.

 

 

He watched her go up the stairs, making her way to her bedroom. He sighed heavily, this was not going well. `Hopefully Youko doesn't kill me for what I've done.'

Kurama leaned against a tree appearing calm and collected on the outside while inside he was anything but. They both knew that something was wrong with Kagome but they couldn't tell exactly what it was, only that she was feeling despair over something. It was times like this that they both wished they had the ability to communicate with her telepathically.

 

 

`I'm sure she is fine Youko.'

 

 

`I know, Kuronue's watching over her. He wouldn't allow anything to happen to her. I just wish I knew what it was that could send her into such a state.'

 

 

`As do I my friend but for now we have no way of knowing what is wrong. The sooner this gets over and done with the better. I am surprised that we have not seen Naraku yet.'

 

`So am I Red. Although I wonder about that human that had come out a short time ago, I was under the impression that they had cleared everyone out of the building.'

 

 

`That was the impression I had gotten as well. However I did not sense any demonic energy from him, he could be perfectly normal. Though with Naraku's power if it was him he could easily disguise himself. We can't afford to reveal ourselves though.'

 

 

`Tell me something I don't know. We're stuck here waiting for the fucking bastard to make a move.'

Naraku smiled as he walked away from the officer who had questioned him. It had been entirely too easy for him to manipulate these humans. How they had managed to become so prolific was something he could not begin to understand. His gaze shifted over to the direction where he felt the energy pouring forth from the fire apparition. It would seem the little demon wanted his blood and he wanted it badly. `He'll get his chance. Pity he won't survive this encounter.'

 

 

`You are entirely too confident Master.'

 

 

`I have reason to be Kagura, no other has managed to accomplish what I have done or have you forgotten this fact.'

 

 

`You've accomplished nothing Naraku. Everyone else has done the work, you've taken the credit for it.'

 

 

`Bitch, are you forgetting who owns you? You would mock me knowing that I could kill you in an instant?'

 

 

Naraku started to prove his point but stopped before he released the power he had been gathering. He was shielding himself yes, but if he poured forth that much energy to punish her then it would surely draw attention that he was not ready for. Kagura fell silent once more, as if she were waiting for him to strike. It was then that he knew what she had been doing. She had been baiting him, hoping he would alert the Detectives to his presence. Oh she would pay for her thoughts of treachery.

 

 

He strolled down the sidewalk acting as if he hadn't a care in the world. Once he was well enough away from the masses of people he changed courses and made his way back towards his castle and the forest that surrounded it. His trap was in place now; all he needed to do was get to the site where it would be sprung.

 

 

It didn't take him long, maybe another ten minutes to reach his destination. He could feel Kanna's presence through the bond he had with her. She was ready and waiting, as were the surprises that she had set up on his orders. The stage was set, it was time to begin. He released his shields and elevated his energy in an answering call to Hiei's challenge. Now it was only a matter of time.

kogas hentai luver: That was actually one of the big reasons for the delay in this chapter. I had a few different things I wanted to do, one of which was a fight scene in the mall but it just didn't work out that way. So instead I brainstormed with two friends and we came up with something completely different. I'm hoping it comes together right, though people are probably going to be wishing for my death while it's all playing out. Maybe I need the witness protection program instead of Yusuke lol. As for BL, she never did apologize which doesn't surprise me. She either didn't read my response or she did and she's slunk off somewhere and won't admit to her mistake. Be my guest and have at her, perhaps we can burn her at the stake? That could be amusing mwahaha

 

 

Sad: Yes, they are being revised as of now. They had too many spelling errors and I wanted to add a bit more depth to the characters and include some scenes that I never managed to get in there.

Kura-kun's-lovr: There's just no accounting for some of the reviews and emails I get. I think the break that I took did some good, I'm feeling much better about writing again. We've got the first of two major fight scenes coming up, I believe it will be the next chapter that it happens. Things are about to get very angsty, I hope I can pull it off right. Yes, we have discovered that Youko is an underwear thief though he prefers to go through the draw while we are there and then ask if he can see me wear them. Shameless kitsune. Kuronosuke thinks it's funnier than hell seeing how much Youko can make me blush. Men lol

 

Ness: I try not to get too mad over things but that one was just. Ugh lol

 

Diane: I agree with you there. Hope you like this chapter as well, hopefully the next one will be up in the next day or so.

 

Audrey: Glad to see you reviewing. It always thrills me to see another review come up, it keeps me from getting discouraged thinking no one is wanting to read these things lol I needed the short break that I took, I won't stop writing permanently. Just a few of them had me seriously doubting what I was able to put on paper. And then going through what I had already posted made me realize that one story in particular needed major work. I can only blame the poor quality in spelling and plot holes in A Circle of Souls on severe sleep deprivation. When the writing bug bit me I don't think I stopped writing on that story until I got up to thirty chapters and the lack of sleep I went through showed badly. Hopefully it's much better now, the next update on that one will be coming out soon. I'm almost done revising the next bunch of thirteen chapters. I've started a new fic which is going to be an extreme challenge, hopefully it comes out right but I worry. I want to get more into the darker, torn side of him and explore how he got that way while at the same time involve him in a romance and have a softer side to him without it seeming out of character. I must be insane lol

Tori~Chan: It's unlikely that Kagome is going to gain any more powers when they finally do get the chance to mate though there is one added power I'm contemplating giving her I just have to figure out all the details to work it in. She'll probably never gain full control of her powers either but it will be vital that she doesn't have complete control if I can plan this just right. For C.O.S. its under revision now, I'm going into more detail about the relationship between her and Hiei. In the chapter I'm working on revising now had an added scene where Kurama takes Kagome to meet his mother and things don't go well. I may be going occ concerning Shiori but I'm also trying to put myself in her position if my son came home with his news. As for Whispers I wanted to add Kurama into the relationship but Hiei's just too possessive in that fic, it would be difficult to pull off. I hated doing that to Kurama since he is my favorite character. Y.W.B.M. will probably be the last fic to get finished unfortunately, I'm having problems progressing with that one but I will update it as soon as I possibly can.

 

 

Cyntinell: I'm glad to see that you reviewed, I had been wondering when you were going to make an appearance :-) This story will probably be completed soon. Perhaps another ten chapters and then it will be over. I'll actually be sad to see this one end.

Yes, alas some poor fool thought this was a gravitation crossover. I had never even seen that shows Suichi and I had to go look. Needless to say I couldn't understand how the two could be confused but that's me. His Shortness took offense to the nickname and threatened me so I had Youko restrain him. On the bed no less. Needless to say he's no longer upset with me and I now have permission to tie him up anytime I please *snickers* You were right, I was trying to get into Naraku's character, but ii didn't end up violent enough. The next chapter shall be different though. Please don't hate me when you read it lol I know what you mean by drooling whenever an update comes out. I feel the same when I see you've updated your story lol You've got me curious as all hell as to what is going on in your story. I'm captivated. You're kinda close to what I have planned but not exactly, I hope to put a major twist on this that no one quite expects. The beginning of the end starts in the next chapter. Hehehehe
