Chapter One
Arisen trouble

She was beautiful, her dark tresses waving in the fading sunlight, her chocolate eyes flooded with emotions, he could barely resist the urge to simply lean over and kiss her.

But he was in enough trouble as it was. No need to kindle the already scorching inferno.

“How dare you run off like that? Did you even stop to think off how worried I might be? You could have died for all I knew and I wouldn’t have known!” rambled on the hysteric teenager.

She was truly amazing when she was mad. The way her cheeks flustered that bright red and her eyes sparkled. She was like a temptress to him when her soft pale hands rested on her hips and her annoying blue skirt crinkled under them. It gave him odd feelings, and urges.

It was as though invisible hands were twisting his stomach into knots. And when she touched him with her pure and taintless touches, the urges intensified. His head would get light, and his heartbeat would speed up. Butterflies, that had once been a small tingle, would attack and had he not known better, he would have though she was an enchantress using magic to avenge his sins.

But he knew better. She would always be there for him. No matter the trials or tribulations, the young woman before him would go to the ends to help him, as he would for her, and it was that thought that gave him a peace of mind whilst on duty.

“Yusuke Urameshi, are you listening to me?” interrupted the young woman.

“Of course Keiko, I was just…”

“Don’t you lie to me! I can tell very well when…” She never got to finish the sentence and their lips met in soul shattering passion.

Beep… Beep… Beep…

Yusuke cursed aloud at the infernal contraption that had ruined his brief moment of joy.

Flipping open a small compact device, the young man found himself staring at the image of a childish looking toddler. It was an odd looking child though, with a cerulean pacifier hanging from his mouth and a azure hat atop it’s head, it held an almost royal appearance with its beady little eyes…

“Yusuke get over here immediately, this is an emergency,” screamed the kid as a flustered look lit his face.

“Look pacifier breath this is…” began an annoyed Yusuke as he glared at the screen, but instead of the child ruler, he found himself looking at a blank screen.

“Yusuke…” spoke Keiko as she looked worriedly at her boyfriend.

“I know Keiko, but I have to go, please don’t get mad, I-”

“It’s alright Yusuke, he seemed to think it urgent, but hurry back,” The look in her eye made him stop in his tracks as he stared at the young woman before him.

Smiling softly, he allowed the moment to grasp him and in a flash had her in his arms, their lips meeting together etching a moment of timeless zeal.

Kurama watched in a somewhat amused fashion as Koenma screamed himself hoarse and the normally busy ogres ran around in chaos.

Chaos… He hadn’t had to use that word in a long time. Of course he hadn’t been called in for a case in almost two years, so when he had heard about the chance to relieve some tension, he had jumped at the opportunity.

A soft smile lit his face as he thought back to those memorial moments…

But why would he call the entire group back together after so long?

Turning his head, he looked inquiringly at the short demon in the corner… Hiei.

He looked about the same as always, his attire completely black except the small scarf wrapped around his neck and the bandage above his eyes. He stood in the dark corner pretending not to care, but he knew better. Though the forbidden child would not admit it for his life, but he was both worried.

Of course he had a right to be. Koenma was sitting at his desk looking extremely pale. Dark circles underlined his eyes and wrinkles furrowed within his brow. It was a depressing sight to see amongst such chaos.

Looking to the right, Kurama found himself looking at a carrot topped young man with a tall and lanky appearing build. His outfit was a large blue school uniform and he had the most curious beady brown eyes. It amazed him how a couple years of High School could change a person. For this young man was no longer the whiny Kuwabara he used to know, but instead a mature young adult with haunted eyes.

“This had better have be good,” screeched a young man walking through the door. His hair was jet black with a single white strip most likely from stress, and his eyes a passionate auburn that were glaring at full force at the child who had summoned him. It was nice to know some things never change.

“Yusuke, please calm down,” spoke Koenma as he sighed softly and shut his eyes. It was at this time, Yusuke took a chance to look around.

“Wow, is that really you guys?” asked the spirit detective as he looked at the occupants of the room.

“Yes it is them, and you can all get reacquainted on your newest assignment…” interrupted Koenma as he looked solemnly at the group.

“What I thought I quit!” shouted Kuwabara in an undignified manner. However he had a point. They did leave the team, so what kind of trouble could the spirit world have gotten into this time?

“Koenma-sama, power levels are reaching the lowest since feudal times!” screamed a woman’s voice above the jabbering of the crowd of ogres, “the lords of Makai are being called in…” just as she finished speaking a giant earthquake took control of the room and the papers stacked on Koenma’s desk flew everywhere.

“Oh kami, not again…” whispered Koenma as he scurried after an ordinary looking folder with the word ‘info’ printed in large letters atop it. Yusuke could be heard cursing feverishly as he tried to grasp whatever he could to stay upright.

Once the quake was over Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei all looked expectantly at the young ruler, inquiring an explanation for the sudden distraction.

“Listen, you don’t have much time and I have little leads to help you with…” sighed Koenma as he began to organize his desk back once more. “But to put it plainly the barrier is falling apart.”

Shock…

“What the hell do you mean ‘falling apart’?” screeched Yusuke as he felt his heart freeze over. Sensui. Was this his work? And if so, was it reversible? Could he even stop a dead man?

“The barrier has been around since feudal times. Why it was created, we do not know, but for some reason it appeared their one day, its source the power of a single individual. The entirety of Rekai is looking for one name to help you, but they have found none so far. It turns out, that the source of power is fading, which means you need to find the one who put it up in the first place’s reincarnation. If you can do that we will be able to resume the power source and save the world from destruction.”

“Excuse me Koenma-sama,” interrupted Kurama, “how exactly would you take the energy from this said person?”

Their answer was a soft mumble.

“What was that?” asked Kuwabara, and Kurama noticed the slight widen of Hiei’s eyes.

“We would have to kill the said person by drawing their energy out of them,” replied Koenma looking down ashamed. Kurama felt his heartbeat quicken and his face pale.

Drawing energy out of someone was like trying to draw out blood, only slightly different. There would be no antiseptic to numb the pain and instead of getting drowsy, one grows more awake until the last seep of energy is withdrawn. This results in a vacuum of the sort and creates a type of warped vortex within the body, finally resulting in the body collapsing upon itself and the host being ripped into a somewhat stalemate of death.

The room sat in shocked silence and Kurama found himself dreading the mission to come even more.

“I refuse,” spoke a soft voice to his right. Kurama, as well as all the other occupants of the room found themselves staring at Kuwabara.

“What?” asked Koenma, his eyes wide at the statement he thought he had misheard.

“I refuse,” Kuwabara repeated once more, still in the same whispery tone. “I will not kill some innocent person. It goes against my code.” As he said this, tears began to leak from his eyes. “You said that demons and humans lived together at one point in time, why can’t they do that again?”

Hiei looked at the tall man that he was forced to work with once more with disgust.

“Listen baka,” started off the small fire apparition in a deadly voice, “that time was chaos. All those who survived that time still remember it with fear. One would have to be mad to want those times back. Thousands of minor demons and humans roamed the lands and terrorized those weaker than them! One life can’t possibly worth that of all the realms!”

“Why Hiei I didn’t know you cared so much,” spoke a soft voice from behind them. Turning, they all found themselves staring at a blue haired woman who looked about ready to drop dead.

“Boton,” began Yusuke as he stared at the normally happy grim reaper. “What…”

“There’s no time, we found the name of one of the participants of the group we mostly believe her to be the miko. This should give you a head start. Her name is Kagome Higurashi.”

“Higurashi?” asked Kurama in a moment of shock, “Isn’t that the name of that girl who was always rumored to be sick?”

“Now that you mention it, I think Keiko said something about her, but I wasn’t paying much attention. Only that one of her friends was friends with her and that the girl lived on a Shinto shrine.”

“Hey, I know that shrine, Shizuru used to work over there, and sometimes she’d take me and I’d get to play with the little girl. She was really nice to me, except she had this huge temper!” announced Kuwabara happily.

“Well then, you four need to find out any information that you can and quickly. You need to find the reincarnation of the one who up the barrier at all cost!” spoke Koenma as he stared hopefully at the group, tears forming in his baby eyes.

Boton lead the group through a portal leaving the young ruler to his own devices.

“If only fate weren’t so cruel,” though Koenma as he stared at their retreating backs…

If only…
