Chapter Two

Yusuke glared heatedly at the stairs he was being forced to walk up. He hated stairs; he hated stairs with a passion. They stood for nothing but pain, pain that could have been easily avoided if someone would by an elevator.

“How much further is it?” whined Kuwabara as they trucked up a million stairs.

“We are almost there,” spoke Kurama, his red hair billowing softly in the wind.

It was amazing how calm Kurama could be, or at least Yusuke felt it was. But then again that might have been because Yusuke thought Sensui was back once more and Kurama had not been the one to battle Sensui…

“Finally,” complained Yusuke as he climbed the last step, but froze when he felt the abnormally large amount of power to his left.

“Excuse me, who are you and what do you want?” asked a young man. He was a quite unique looking teen, with black hair falling down his back and brown eyes that held only wariness. Of course he had a right to be, the other occupants of the house had died mysteriously one winter evening and their guts strewn across the lawn. That had been quite some time back, but then again good memories only last so long while the darker ones will haunt for life.

“Forgive us, I am Minamino Shuichi, and these are my friends,” spoke Kurama as he bowed politely.

“Kuwabara Kazuma,” the tall carrot-topped man did a deep bow before looking around.

“Urameshi Yusuke,” The detective gave a bit of a cocky smile and nodded his head slightly.

“And Hiei,” the forbidden child did not even bother bowing as his ruby colored eyes were scouting the area.

“I see, and your purpose?” asked the teen, his eyes still filled with wary and something akin to fear.

“We were wondering if you could tell us about your sister…” he was cut off by the sudden widening of the young mans eyes and took a step back at the power the young man was radiating off.

“Demons, why do you venture to this holy place, and speak the truth or I will purify you!” stated the adolescent as he began to glow a soft blue.

Yusuke felt as though a raging firestorm was erupting before him, and he was protected by the slimmest of glass walls.

“You’re sister has been reincarnated and we need to find her. She’s the only one with the power to save the world from apocalypse!” screamed Yusuke as a deafening whistle began to blow harshly around him. His head was swimming in pain, and darkness was beginning to creep at the edges of his vision when it suddenly stopped.

Blinking rapidly, he realized with a start that he was on his knees and kneeling right in front of a giant tree.

“It seems that you are of no threat, forgive me for not trusting you,” spoke the young man in a whispered voice. “My name is Souta, and I am Kagome’s younger brother.”

Kurama glanced surreptitiously around the room they were sitting in.

It was an odd room to begin with. Antiques hung everywhere, and sutras were plastered all over the walls. It looked like a television had been removed from the dent in the carpet that now held a candleholder. Actually, it appeared that there were no electronic devices of any kind, only candles, sutras, and books… lots of books.

“I suppose that since you are looking for Kagome’s reincarnation, then she really is dead,” spoke Souta for the first time since they had entered the house. His eyes were downcast and his lips were set in a steady line. He seemed to be on the verge of crying, except he held an aura of firm resolve.

“I am afraid so,” answered the redheaded fox cautiously. It was a dangerous game they were playing at now. They had little time before the barrier completely fell thus erupting in chaos, and the only lead to one who possibly put it up had brought them to an emotional teenage monk with the power to obliterate them in seconds. Yes, a dangerous game indeed.

“Okay, well I’ll tell you what I can, but what do you know about her?” inquired Souta with a sigh.

“Nothing really, only that she was one of two women who traveled in a group. And that she was a priestess,” replied Kurama thoughtfully.

“I see, well, sis never really told me too much, but I know of a couple of her adventures and a couple of the group members… but where to begin…”

“How about the beginning?” asked Kuwabara thoughtfully.

“Okay, well it all started on her fifteenth birthday. She was drawn into the well out back. From what I remember, a centipede demon attacked her and pulled her into it. After that I’m a bit foggy on the details. All I remember is something about some villagers mistaking her for some dead person, and her first meeting InuYasha.”

“Who is InuYasha?” interrupted Yusuke.

“A half demon she followed around in the feudal era. She fell in love with him later on, but he tried to kill her on their first confrontation. She put some kind of rosary on him and thus he would fall flat on his face whenever she said the magic word…”

“Magic word?” asked Kuwabara confusingly.

“Sit Boy; InuYasha was half dog demon and thus whenever she said sit he would fall straight into the dirt.”

“You said that they ran around the feudal era. Why would she stay their?” asked Kurama.

“Well, I forgot to mention that she accidentally shattered the shikon no tama, and was forced to work with him to help retrieve it.”

Kurama closed his eyes and began to softly mutter a stream of curses.

He hated that jewel. It caused nothing but sheer trouble to any who got close to it. However, it did explain the barrier. If someone had wished for the barrier, than that would have explained the unexpected arrival of it, but then why was it suddenly being destroyed?

“Kurama,” inquired a worried Yusuke as he looked at his normally cool and collected friend.

“I will explain later Yusuke, in the mean time, how long did it take them to complete the jewel?”

“Well, I’m not exactly sure, because you see, when InuYasha took sis back to the feudal era he wouldn't come back for weeks. And after about a year we got used to it, but some time about a year ago, Kagome went to the feudal era and never returned. I'm not sure what happened, I don't know if anyone really does. From what I can tell they fought secret battles during the time and she must have won the final battle or else the world couldn't be like it is. But still, late at night, I get these dreams, almost like visions, and I can see parts of battles. Flashes of emotions. However, it is the most recent of ones that scare me.”

“I can’t see anything, I can only hear. The words are usually blurred, and every now and then I’ll see an image of some horrible looking scene. But mostly I hear this laugh… its so cold and heartless… it sounds like steel except there’s an edge to it, almost as though it was longing to do something.”

“I’m not sure who it is who is laughing, or what they laugh about, but I’m positive that it’s from the final encounter.”

The group stared at the young man that breathed out a soft sigh.

“Thank you for your time,” said Kurama as he stood from a couch he had been sitting on. The rest of the group followed suit soon after and shuffled quietly out the door. Once they reached the outside, Kurama looked towards the gigantic tree that had judged him. Staring he felt a wave of familiar wash over him before he was assaulted by a powerful image of a young man with milk white hair, hanging in an ever-lasting sleep on the tree, a single arrow pinning him to it.

“Yo Kurama, snap out of it…” called Yusuke as he waved a hand in front of his friends face.

“It is alright Yusuke,” said Kurama as he grabbed the offending hand and shook his head lightly, “I just thought I saw something…”

“It is possible… for you seek to save a world with a dead ones memory…” replied Souta as he gazed sadly at the giant tree. “I know you probably need some more information than what I gave you, so I suggest you go and visit her friends, they don’t live to far away, and they’d probably know some stuff that might help you. But don’t get your hopes to high, Kagome didn’t tell them about the well so you’ll have to do it discreetly.”

At that the youngest and only living Higurashi returned inside to grab the address book and returned back to the group with a tiny black binder, the top having the word Kagome inscribed neatly across in gold letters.

“Good luck,” whispered Souta as he watched the group leave down the shrine steps, never noticing the pair of lavender eyes glaring at him from the cover of foliage.
