Chapter 4

Awakening Memories

Kagome's eyes opened, her thoughts unclear, she felt nothing. Everything around her was nothing but a grey void and hazy. She laid there, her hand flexing involuntary, positioned there utterly dazed. She could here the soft chirping of crickets, it was still night time. She was surprised not to feel the soft warmness of her bed covers, not to mention the bed.

She moved, bumping into something rather large and hard, startled she shot up, her ebony hair flying around her face finally landing around her shoulders. She had to look twice, for one she didn't believe what she seen, two her eyes still were not completely focused. She reached out and lightly touched the discolored object, it was smooth and broken from what she gathered a larger piece. She jerked back when she figured out the object was a bone.

She looked at her hand, a reaction that everyone has, looking to see if anything stained her hand, seeing nothing but dirt. The place looked and smelled familiar. The comforting cool musty smell filled her sensation and calmed her. Even through these familiarities, she couldn't place where she was, hell she couldn't even remember what happened. But instinct took over and she automatically began to feel around the floor, carefully avoiding the bones.

Wherever she was, it wasn't a large area. feeling along the cold stone wall her hand touched a thick tubular object running up and along the wall. Her hand recoiled thinking it was snake, but then remembered that for some reason it was there to help her. She stood tugging on the vine, she began to pull herself up and it then dawned on her, she was in the well, but she didn't recall it having vines growing in it.

She could soon see the sky, it was perfect. She shortly started to pin-point the constellations, smiling to herself she pulled herself onto the lip of the well. Confusion struck her, the well at her family's shrine was in a building, there was no way she would be able to see the stars, even if there wasn't building around her well the stars would never be that bright.

She looked around hesitantly, where was she? She began to walk around, for some reason, something was trying break through, something so tightly packed away in the back of her mind was trying to come forward to tell her where and why she was there. She soon found herself on a trail, for some reason knowing where she was going.

A light ahead signaled life of some kind. She walked slowly not sure of what she was getting into, even though, her gut feeling was telling her she was totally safe, telling her she was going somewhere sheltered. She reached out pushing aside grown up brush and limbs, the trail was obviously not used often. She could see a end to the trail, pushing aside the last of the brush, revealed a small village, something seemed very familiar to her.

Her mind urged her to continue, promising her something wonderful at the end of her small quest. She walked into the village, in the center was a bon fire, over it on a spit, a large boar sat roasting, the aroma of the cooking meat tempted Kagome to go right up and snatch some, but something in the back of her mind kept nagging her that this was not what she was here for.

She looked around, her eyes lazily roaming over the wooden structures, taking in each detail, hoping to ignite some kind of memory. She continued her slow pace around the village, hoping she didn't startle anyone. She came to an empty spot in the village, a hut was sat back further in the woods than the rest. Her curiosity got the best of her.

Walking slowly to the lone dwelling she stopped not far from the front of the entrance. It seemed abandoned, some of the boards were laying around the foot of the small awning, clearly stating that the building was no longer in use. Yet it strangely looked familiar. She allowed herself to look around once more, her eyes ran over a small alter. She seen that vines had claimed it, and it like the building was falling apart.

She strolled over to it, her hands tenderly touching the exposed wood and stone. She tore off the vines piece by piece, slowly revealing the alter to be a tombstone. She kneeled down, her heart beating louder than normal. She licked her lips and continued to tear the vines away revealing the deceased's name.

Her heart jumped into her throat and her eyes began to tear. She choked to keep from crying, everything that had been locked up for so long came flooding back, everything was as clear as day. She traced the engraved letters on the headstone with her small finger, her tears leaking out. She couldn't believe it.

Someone that meant so much to her was gone. Her teacher, the person who talked with her about stuff that she couldn't even talk with her mother about, her mentor was gone. Keade was gone. She rested her head on her knees. The snapping of twigs and crunching of leaves soon disturbed her, jerking her head up, her hazel eyes met with the amber eyes of the one she so long ago loved.
