-Chapter one: A life for a life-

Tears fell down her face like a waterfall as she struggled to break loose. Two pares of hands held her back, nails digging into her shoulders. She screamed at the men to let her go, she had to get to her mother. Her throat was raw, and her voice was horse from screaming. She felt like she couldn't breathe, her nose clogged up from all her crying. Her heart was beating a mile a minute, seeming to echo throughout the room where her mother was being beaten in front of her. Her call was stopped mid way when a hand came out of nowhere and smacked her across the face.

"Stop that infernal noise, bitch, before I shut you up permanently." A male voice sneered from beside her. She paid it no mind, if felt like her body had become numb to the feeling of being hit."Let my mother go!" She screeched, her eyes wide when the older man dropped the whip he had beating her mother with. He fell to his knees and flipped her over to her stomach, pushing her kimono up hips. Her mother had long ago stopped struggling. The man grinned madly at broken woman below him as he untied his kimono obi.

Five year old Kagome gasped as the smirking man climbed over her mother, his hand moving slowly up her inner thigh.

"No!" Kagome cried as the man thrust into her mother, her struggles stopped momentarily as he pounded into her mothers still body. She vaguely feared that she had passed, but her sensitive ears picked up her grunts, and her nose the salt of her silent tears. She had never felt so useless in her short life. She choked back a sob when the man groaned in pleasure and slumped over her mother. After a few seconds, he sat up and grabbed the back of her mothers head, yanking it back. One of her eyes was swelled shut, blood and dirt covered her face. A tear fell slowly and erased a trail of grime behind it.

The man smiled, full of malice as he reached over and grasped a dagger. He looked Kagome right in the eyes. "A life for a life." he murmured and brought the dagger across her mothers throat harshly. Her eye shot open, she gasped and blood shot from her mouth. The man scowled, throwing her head down her wiped the blade clean on her kimono.

Kagome had gone silent the moment the dagger was in her view. Her eyes staring at her mothers body, her green eyes not really seeing. Tears blurred her vision as the man who had killed her mother gestured to one of the town elders to come forth. The two men holding her forced her onto her back, beside her mothers body. The village elder, an older woman by the name Umi, came out into the moonlight, holding a peace of medal and a burning candle. Another woman came out and kneeled down beside kagome. "Hold her down." She said as her hands worked to pull Kagome's kimono up her hips, stopping when the fabric reached her stomach.

Kagome started struggling when the elder sat by her. Her cold, wrinkled hands gestured to the woman to hold down her right leg. The old woman held the piece of metal over the candle flame for a moment. When the end became a lava red, she removed it and bent down closer to Kagome's leg.

Kagome screamed when the hot appendage touched her skin, burning the tissue away. She squeezed her eyes shut when it seemed that the woman was writing something on her. A sob broke through her throat when the metal took yet another direction on her upper thigh. A hand came up and covered her mouth when she screamed.

Umi sat back on her hunches for a moment at looked at her work. The younger girl beside her leaned her way. "This is what the seer told you to write? 'Taiyou'?"

The elder nodded and stood. "Hai, that is all. She gave no reason, just a request. Pull her kimono down, Niji."

The girl known as Niji nodded once, and did as she was told. Kagome, who had stopped screaming, was staring at her mother. They had laid them face to face. A lifeless light green eye, so much like her own, stared back at her. She silently gasped when a trail of blood escaped the pool around her mother and made its way toward her face. The men holding her jerked her up a moment before it could touch her.

She looked around the room. The man who had killed her mother was leaning up against the wall beside her, he had been silent during the burning.

He pushed up off the wall. Walking toward the door, he looked over his shoulder. "Throw her out of the village."

The men holding her nodded curtly, tightening there grip on her arms they dragged her out of the main house, into the woods lining the village, threw her in the dirt and walked away without looking back.

Kagome sat up, spitting the dirt out of her mouth on her way. Her thigh was still burning, and she pulled up her kimono to get a look at it. Upside down it was difficult to make out the meaning. She craned her neck sideways and then stared in confusion at the symbol. She had expected a 'worthless' or maybe a 'damned'. It was the symbol of the Taiyou. Kagome shook her head, who knows what the elder was thinking. She shoved the fabric back down, and stood on shaky legs. She leaned on the tree beside her for support. Where was she to go now? She had no answer for that question yet.

Kagome sighed, looking of into the forest she brushed her shoulder length violet hair out of her face. A few stray tears ran down her face. She had a feeling there was going to be a long night ahead of her.
