-Chapter two: The father who never knew-
Kagome wasn't sure how long she had been walking, but she did know she was tired and hungry. She had not stopped for food or rest, determined to get where her instincts where telling her to go. The trees seemed to thin out the farther she walked, the sun was peaking over the horizon turning the sky a mixture of orange and pink. Kagome could feel the beginnings of exhaustion pulling at her mind, begging her to rest. Yet she kept on, never stopping, never looking back.

Her mothers death laid heavy in her mind, it just didn't seem real to her. The scene played over and over in her head, her mothers early pleas to let Kagome free. She never once begged for her own life, just the safety of her child. The wind started to pick up, swishing her lavender hair around her face making it difficult to see. She ignored it, the water building in her eyes had blinded her already. She brought her hand up, brushing them away harshly. No more, she thought, no more tears. She would be strong, she would live through this, her mother would want that.

The sun was high in the sky now, around mid morning she would say. Her eyes drooped at the realization she had walked all night. Her steps faltered, and she swayed slightly. She gasped when her foot snagged a up-grown tree root. Not even bothering to bring up her hands to break the fall, she landed on the cold ground with a grunt.

Kagome was out before her head hit the ground.

Reimei swung the large boar over his shoulder with a grunt. Walking toward the village he grumbled under his breath. Why couldn't the elder get someone else to hunt? He sighed, he was having such a good sleep too. He looked up at the sun, not bothering to squint his eyes at the brightness. His long, deep blue hair rustled slightly in the light breeze, his light red eyes narrowed at the sky. He had been hunting for far too long. He wondered with a smirk how long the elders have been bitching about there meal. The damn bats should have got off there lazy asses and got there own damn food, he thought, still bitter about being woken up.

He stopped mid step when the wind carried him a strange sent. A bat youkai, no, a bat hanyou. He frowned as he took flight, hanyou? There hadn't been hanyou around for a long time, especially a bat hanyou, or so thought the elders and the rest of the town. It was familiar, yet not. Orange and lily flowers, with cinnamon underlining it, most likely a power sent. His frown grew deeper as he flied through the trees. Whatever it was had to be young, no older than six or seven, and the sent lead towards the village gate. Stronger and stronger the sent got until he landed at the gate of the village. He flung down the carcass of the animal he had been holding and looked around. His eyes caught sight of the color purple. He sniffed, this was the one he had smelled. He walked to the fallen body.

Kneeling down, Reimei listened to her heart for a moment. It was a steady beat, and her breathing was even. She was out. Her dark purple leather wings spread out across her back. He gently folded them back in and rolled her over, wanting to get a better look at the child. He winced at the condition of her person. Multiple bruises painted her face, as well as a new lump and a small cut, no doubt from the fall. Her hair was matted with dirt, and her kimono was ripped and stained with blood. He froze when she moaned and murmured one word.

"Mama,"

His heart twisted painfully in his chest, that one word was filled with so much sorrow and regret. He picked her up, she needed to be cleaned and her cuts tended to. No doubt the village would be pissed to find out a hanyou existed, but he couldn't leave her like this.

He walked up to the wooden gate of the village, shifted Kagome in his arms a bit, and knocked three times to signal his return. He sucked in a deep breath and walked into the village when the door creaked open. He ignored the shock that crossed the guards face and gestured for him to fetch the boar's body. He paid no mind to the people walking past him, he had one destination and he would be damned if he let someone's stare stop him.

When he reached the hut of the town healer, he almost sighed with relief. Holding in the breath he so desperately wanted to let go, he pushed back the mat awkwardly and walked in. Once inside, away from all the eyes, he sighed, his shoulders sagging slightly.

"What have I told you about knocking, Reimei?" A deep voice asked from in front of him. He looked up at the sound, the man hadn't even looked up from where he was mixing herbs. He felt it safe to roll his eyes at the older man's amused tone. "Don't think I didn't see that, boy."

Reimei snorted, again re-adjusted his grip on the small child. "Kenkou, if you would look up for a moment you would see why im here in the first place."

At the seriousness of Reimei's voce, the man known as Kenkou looked up. Surprise lit up in his blue-grey eyes at the sight of Reimei holding a small child. He stopped his mixing and stood. Walking to Reimei, he brought up a clawed hand and brushed the hair out of Kagome's face.

"A hanyou?" He asked, his nose twitching at the smell he just couldn't place. "But whe-?"

"I found her in front of the gate, out like a light." Reimei said as he gestured to the futon to his side, wanting to lay her down. Kenkou nodded absently, still trying to name that sent so familiar to him.

"Can you clean her up and treat her cuts? I need to head back and retrieve that damn boar `fore the elders go crazy." Reimei said, brushing his hair behind a pointed ear. "I'll be back when I'm finished." He added on a second thought.

Kenkou nodded, already tying up his silver-purple hair in a low ponytail so to keep it out of the way. "Of course. Tell no one."

Reimei sighed, they might be too late for that. With one last look to the sleeping child, he pushed back the mat and walked out.

Kenkou, with a small bowl of water and a piece of cloth, sat down beside the futon. gently washing the grime off Kagome's face, he tried to pinpoint the scent again. A ningen woman with long black hair and laughing green eyes danced through his mind, her scent laced with the smell of lily flowers.

"Yousei..." His heart skipped a beat, this child shared the same scent as his did his former lover. It suddenly clicked, and his eyes widened. No, no it couldn't be. She would have told him...she would hav- He sighed.

She would have run away.

And she did. She broke it off and left for her home village. Kenkou looked down at the sleeping child-- his sleeping child. A child, he had a child and he never knew. His mind was working in over drive to register the fact. He laid down the now dirty cloth and reached for the medical salve. He painted the cut gently with the herb, stopping when her face scrunched up in a wince. The bruises were already healing, so there was no need to treat them.

He stood up and walked over to the clothing trunk in the corner of the hut. He digged in search of a small enough kimono, grinning in triumph when he came across a light blue one.

After he cleaned and changed Kagome, he grabbed a nearby blanket and covered her. Beside the small bump on her forehead, she was fine, if not a little tired. He sighed and sat down in front of her, bending to rest his elbows on his knees. Placing his head in his hands he studied her, watching as her chest rose and fell in rhythm of her steady, peaceful breathing. His eyes trailing over her face, taking in every feature. Her hair was unlike his or her mothers, a pure light violet, and her eyes remained a mystery to him. But the wings, oh the bat wings where definitely from him, a dark purple in color, almost black. She was beautiful. Yes, his daughter was beautiful. He sat strait up when she groaned and her eyes fluttered. She was waking! He panicked, what if she screamed? What if she didn't like him? What if-?

His worries were silenced when her eyes peaked open, then closed instantly. She moaned in discomfort and sat up on her forearms. She opened her eyes again and looked around, stopping on Kenkou's frozen form. She blinked comically, and tilted her head cutely.

It was too cute and Kenkou was sure he would die of awe. And the one thing that made his eyes turn sad. Her eyes were the green, only a shade or two lighter then her mothers. Still, he wondered where Yousei was. Surely she would leave there child out alone like this...He took a breath, only to freeze again. The other smell, the one that had covered her before. She was covered in the smell of death, and blood.

More importantly, Yousei's blood.

He wanted to smack himself for not knowing sooner, how could he have missed a smell when it had covered her completely? Yousei was dead, her mother was dead, his only love...dead.

He wanted to cry, hard. The need was great, but he could morn later. Did his child even know of him?Kagome was confused, this man was stiff still and she had no idea where she was. Her nose picked up multiple scents, most of which were Youkai. Bat youkai to be exact. She shivered in fear, the mans attention shot back to her. He smelled familiar, like how her mommy used to smell when she was younger. The questions flied.

"Who are you? Where am I? How did I get here? Why do you smell familiar? Did you know my mommy?" It all came out rushed and jumbled, but Kenkou managed to catch everything.

"My name is Kenkou. You are in my village, land of the Bat youkai. My friend found you outside the gate passed out, and brought you to me. Yes, I knew your mommy. She was someone very special to me." He answered, purposely ignoring one question, not so sure how to answer it. He couldn't just come out and say `I'm your dad'!

"Are you my daddy?"

Well, maybe he didn't have to. How do you answer a question like that? Yes, it was true, but he wasn't sure how to handle it...

"Yes."

She smiled sweetly, causing a chain reaction, he smiled too. She turned around and mimicked his pose. "Did you love mommy?"

He smiled sadly. "Yes, I did."

Her brow creased, confused. "Why did you leave us?" She asked sadly, had she done something wrong when she was younger. "Did I do something?"

His eyes widened. "No! You did nothing wrong! Your mommy asked me to leave."

Kagome nodded, her eyes looking downward. "She never spoke of you. Did you know I was born?"

He couldn't help it, despite the sadness in the situation, he smiled. His daughter was smart, oh-so smart to have figured that out, even if was just a question. "No, I did not. I am...sorry I was not there...for you or your mother." The smile turned sad once more.

Kagome's face turned concerned, she leaned forward and patted Kenkou's arms reassuringly. "`S'okay. Mommy loved me enough for the both of you." She pulled her hand back and fiddled with the fabric of her kimono. "Ano, can I ask you something?" She asked, her large, apple green orbs hopeful.

Kenkou nodded, his eyes still slightly sad from her earlier confession.

Kagome took a deep breath, she couldn't believe she was going to ask him. But she had finally found her father, she had to know. "C-can I c-call you d-daddy?" Tears already building in her eyes at the thought of rejection.

Kenkou sat back, a shocked look marring his face. He certainly didn't expect that, but he couldn't help the large, goofy grin that painted his lips. "I would like that very much." He paused, a dark blush staining on his cheeks when he realized, "What's your name?" How awkward would that be, to ask your own child their name?

Kagomes green eyes lit up, a gap tooth smile slapped on her face. "I'm Kagome!" She chirped, her arms going into the air in excitement. In a flash of violet and blue, she launched herself into Kenkou's arms. Linking her small, chubby arms around his waist as far as they could go, she gave him a squeeze and pulled back slightly. She held out her hand for him to shake. With confused eyes, her father latched onto her hand. She gave it a firm shake and stated. "Hi daddy, I'm Kagome." Her voice dripping with cute seriousness.

Kenkou returned the shake, the goofy smile still there. "Hi Kagome, I'm..daddy."

Kagome released his hand and curled into his lap, one arm still around his waist. "Mommy would be happy." she yawned out, her green eyes blinking rapidly trying to stay awake.

Kenkou nodded, looking down at her sleepy face. "Yes. Now sleep Kagome." She barely nodded, her eyes slipping closed, her breathing evened out. She was fast asleep once more.

He laid her back down onto the futon, covering her up again. "Reimei, didn't your mother tell you its rude to ease drop?" He asked dryly, keeping his voice low. The mat rustled, and Reimei's aura was beside him.

Reimei ignored him, his eyes fixated on the child sleeping. "I would have never thought it. Never in a million years."

"On what?" questioned Kenkou. "On the fact that I have a child, or that I had an affair with a ningen woman?"

"Both, I guess. They both are pretty unbelievable to me. What are you going to do?"

Kenkou closed his eyes and sighed. "Im going to keep her here, raise her like I should have been doing since she was born."

Reimei's face turned serious. "What about the villa-?"

His eyes snapped open to glare at Reimei. "Fuck the village. She's mine, and I wont lose her."

Reimei nodded, and sighed also. "You know im behind you one hundred percent."

Kenkou's glare evaporated. "I know, Reimei, I know."________________________________________________
