-Chapter seven: investigation, heart to heart, and perverted youkai-

"Where have you been?"

Kagome jumped, her eyes darting up from her stew to her father, who was in-front of her. His blue-gray eyes narrowed at her.

She cleared her throat, her eyes falling back to her soup bowl. The look seemingly more intense as time wore on and she stayed silent, thinking of an answer that wouldn't cause to much suspicion. She had been out with Kuronue and Youko all day, and she had a feeling that her father wouldn't like that information too much. Kagome started to fidget.

"Out." she said shortly, shoving some stew in her mouth, trying to by some time. She knew Kenkou didn't like her hanging out with Kurnoue or Youko, it was in his fatherly nature to hate every male specimen that even looked her way. Yet, it wasn't like that with Reimei, he trusted him greatly. Of course, Reimei had been with her since she had arrived here. But, despite how much her father may--or may not--hate them, she was going to be with them as long as she could.

Somewhere, deep inside, she knew that their time here was shortening. After all, Kuronue only came here for his mother, and she had long since passed. Kagome's throat closed up. She wasn't to sure she liked the idea of them leaving.

"Out," he repeated, his voice disapproving. He paused for a moment, "with...them?"

Kagome nodded, her head practically buried in her bowl. She sighed softly, she sat thinking, if only she were a shadow youkai, then she could melt with the walls and get the hell out of here. She sucked in a deep breath, trying to find some courage. "Yeah, so?"

Wow, not such a good move on her part.

The glare intensified from a new angle. Damn, when did Reimei get here? Kagome sighed again and sat down her food, she guess dinner would have to wait. Her stomach mutely rumbled in disapproval.

"You know i don't like you hanging out with them," Kenkou responded calmly, sitting down his own bowl, his face neutral. "I--we--don't trust them." Reimei crossed his arms and nodded, agreeing.

"What are you nodding for?" Kagome snapped, her patience gone. "you have no say over who i go out with!" her eyes flew to her Father, "And you! You should have enough faith in me, and trust my judgment! By saying you don't trust them, you're really saying you don't trust me!!" She stood, she was on a roll now.

A look of twin shock appeared on both Reimei and Kenkou's faces. Kenkou's quickly disappeared, a stern look painted his face.

"Kagome," his voice held the fatherly threat. "calm down, its not that we don't trust you--we do."

"Yeah, Kag's. We just...don't like `em." Reimei shrugged, earning a look from Kenkou.

Kenkou sighed, "What he said," he muttered while picking up the discarded dish-ware. A blush raising on his cheeks at Reimei's boyish confession.

Kagome's eyes lost their anger, a small amount of amusement swirling with the apple green at her father's wording. It was amazing to her how one minute their stern adults, then childish the next. "Sorry," she whispered, her foot nudging a crack in the floor. She almost sighed again, fights never lasted to long in this household.

They nodded, Reimei coming over to pat her shoulder, a look of jealousy shining in his eyes before he plowed up a mask of indifference once again. "Wanna go running?" he asked after a while, flashing her a cute grin.

Kagome smiled, but shook her head. "No, I wanna go for a swim."

"Now? It's dark out Kagome!" scolded her father, who wasn't even looking at her, his nose buried in a old healing scroll.

Kagome frowned, her hand fiddling with a lock of purple hair, "Daddy, it will only be for a little while..." She pouted, her eyes big and watery. Those eye could get her anything.

Her dad sucked in a deep breath, Turning around she watched as his eyes lost there hardness and softened. The 'daddy' thing gets him every-time, Kagome thought.

"Fine, no longer than a hour."

Kagome sighed--was it her or was she doing that allot?--, but nodded. "Fine," she tuned and walked towards the door. "Bye!" and she was gone.

Reimei growled low as he sat from across Kenkou. "What are you going to do about the thieves?" he asked, jealousy flashing across his eyes once more. He crossed his arms across his chest, muscles flexing in bounded anger.

Kenkou sat down the scroll calmly, "Nothing,"

"What?" Reimei hissed, anger surging forth in his words, "Why? They are only going to hurt her in the end! You know what their after, and they will charm her until the succeed!"

Kenkou sighed, a hand massaging the bridge of his nose. "What am i to do then, forbid her to see them? You know that would not work, there is no one to watch her all the time. And you and i both know that Kagome's not that kind of demoness."

"They don't deserve her," Reimei said after a moments silence, his face stone hard. "she needs someone to love her, to protect her-"

"Someone like you?" Kenkou interrupted him, his eyes holding amusement in them.

Reimei blushed a soft pink hue, his eyes downcast. He stayed silent.

After a while Reimei sighed. He leaned back against the wall, a hand going over his forehead. "Well, they will leave soon enough, anyways. With Anraku gone, the bat has nothing left here."

Kuronue looked around the large room, the room that was once his mother's.

Though he never really knew her, that didn't stop him from missing her. Though, to him, it almost felt like missing something that was never there. Anraku had left him everything. Her house, money, and her belongings. What was he to do with it all? He hadn't even planed to stay as long as he had.

Kagome's face flashed in his mind, and a sigh escaped his lips. Kagome was the reason he was still here. And truth be told, he didn't want to leave, and he had a feeling that Youko felt the same. That thought didn't sit to well with him. Would his partner fight him for her? Would he want to fight him? Kuronue knew, that if they kept seeing her like they were--everyday--, the that would happen.

Then that other youkai, Reimei was it? To Kuronue, he was competition too. He had seen the looks the koumori had given Kagome when she wasn't looking. A look of adoration, mixed with sorrowed longing. And a thought passed his mind, who would Kagome chose when it came down to it? She had said she had known Reimei since she was a child, would that change things? Kuronue pinched the bridge of his nose, to many questions swimming in his head, he could feel a headache coming on soon.

He jumped when a hand clasped over his left shoulder. Youko stood behind him silently before moving to his side. They stared at the paper wall in silence.

Youko was first to break it, "What are you thinking about, friend?"

"Would you fight me for her?" Kuronue said, ignoring his question. He needed to know. He didn't love Kagome yet, but the feelings of love were slowly creeping up on him.

Youko looked startled, his hand dropping to his side once more. He was mute for a moment. "No,"

Kuronue's violet eyes widened, "No?" he echoed.

Youko nodded, his eyebrows frowning. "No, because though i know you don't love her, you will. And when that time comes, if i love her too, i will step aside for you, for your happiness."

The feelings of shock and appreciation slowly consumed his mind. After a sigh he shook his head. "Lets see if you can say the same thing when your feelings change, Youko."

Youko clinched a fist at his side, then let it go limp. "Fare enough." He tuned around, a smirk coloring his features.

"Lets go for a run."

Kagome halted to as stop, a foot away from a hot-spring. As far as Kagome knew, she was the only one who knew about this location, and to her, it was the beautiful spring she had seen. She had run for about an hour before she had reached it.

Large, towering trees surrounded the area, along with huge boulders, making it great for privacy. Rose bushes, and various flowers lined the spring, the air smelled sweet. The spring was actually pretty small in size, just enough room for two. The bottom covered in small, smooth stones, multicolored, illuminating the waters.

Kagome internally squealed with delight and quickly stripped off her clothes, folding them neatly and laying them on a near by bolder. She walked into the water, sighing heavily as the waters caressed her sore muscles. She leaned up against a rock, sinking until the water reached her chin. Her lavender hair floating around her, she absently fiddled with the strands. She realized with a pout that she hadn't brought any bathing supplies, ohh well, this was mainly for relaxation anyways.

Her mind started to wander as she lounged in the steamy water, thinking of what her father and Reimei had said. She resisted the urge to growl, how dare they tell her what to do? She was eight-teen dammit, and that was just ningen years. Her mind was developed to that of a 30 year old, if not more. She was also hurt by the fact that her father might not trust her. Reimei was just jealous, she had smelt it and saw it in his eyes. Why, she wondered, would he feel that way? He'd never showed any interest in her person, and when she was younger with that silly crush he had just humored her.

She sighed, she just didn't understand them. Speaking of understanding, Youko and Kuronue was another thing she didn't understand. What did they want with her, anyways? She had heard of them and their many lovers, beautiful demoness, so what did they want with her? To them, she was probably nothing more than a child. But there was a look in their eyes, a look that creep up when they though she wasn't looking. Something that she couldn't explain, and that pissed her off like nothing else. She was all but confused when she was around them, her heart did this strange fluttering thing when she smelled them near, or was thinking of them, or even with them. How frustrating.

Her skin was a light pink color when she raised her hand out of the water, a puny feel to them also. She had been gone long enough, she guessed. She rose slowly out of the water, not really wanting to leave the warm, comforting air of the spring. She sighed/growled and turned to exit the spring, then froze mid step. A look of pure shock/horror painted her face and a deep blush sprung up.

Youko and Kuronue stood there, at the edge of the clearing. Youko with a look of perverted interest on his face grinned devilishly at her. And Kuronue, who had the decency to bush also, was looking at her with wide eyes, as if he had never seen a naked woman before.

Kagome did the only thing she knew how.

She opened her mouth wide and let out a scream.
