-Chapter nine: Murder-

Kagome snuggled deeper into the futon, trying to block out the sunlight. Her ears twitched, there were people talking outside, not very quietly. She growled in her throat and sat up. She blinked sleepily. Her father wasn't present in the room like he normally was in the morning. Reimei was usually here as well, where were they?

Kagome rose, stretched and fetched a clean kimono. Walking behind the changing screen, she switched kimono's and placed her dirty one in a hamper to be cleaned later. She thought back to the other night, Kurnoue must have brought her home. She wondered how much Kenkou like that. She was betting not too much.

She walked out of the hut, squinting her eyes at the harsh morning sunlight. There was a group of people down by the village gate, talking in hushed whispers. She walked towards them, her ears trying to catch their words.

The words died down to silence when they spotted her. Her eyebrows knit in confusion.

"Whats going on?" She asked.

The koumori closest to Kagome was nibbling on her claws, a few tears running down her face. "There was a killing," She whimpered. "Zeena is dead." a few around started crying at the name, clinging to one another as they sobbed.

Kagome bit back a gasp. She didn't know Zeena that well, but she had played with her some when she was a child. She had been four years older than Kagome, but when they got older they never did get along that well. But who would kill her?

"When?"

The bat youkai, known as Kerei, sniffed. She shrugged helplessly. "No ones sure, a hunter found her this morning. Your fathers out there examining her."

Kagome nodded and left towards the gate. She fallowed the string of youkai until she came upon a clearing. Her hand almost flew to her nose. The smell of blood and death hung heavy in the air. Her eyes took in the foliage, blood was everywhere, coagulated and a deep copper color. Smeared hand prints showing signs of a struggle. Kagome saw her father at the edge of the woods, talking to someone. Reimei was off to the side, trying his best not to look sick. Kagome walked up, and she could see why half the people in the clearing were green.

Zeena was slightly laying on her side, looking much like a beaten rag doll. Her dark green hair matted in blood and dirt. Her chest cavity was ripped open, Kagome could see that her heart was gone. Intestines were laying next to her body, ripped and nibbled on. Her face was clawed up, on lifeless ocean colored eye was staring at nothing, glazed over by death. Bite marks lined her arms and neck. Kagome took a deep breath, she had never seen something so horrible and nasty in her life. Rigor mortise hadn't even set in yet, the hunter had almost walked in on the killing. She resisted the urge to run and throw up somewhere. Reimei was watching her know, studying her reaction.

She gasped under her breath, it felt like the skin on her upper thigh was burning off. She absently remembered that's was where the village woman had burned her all those years ago. It didn't hurt, it was more like tingling now more than anything. She tried to ignore it and walked over to Reimei.

"What are you doing here?"

Kagome ignored his question, "Do they know who did it?"

He didn't seem to mind the change. "No," he shook his head. "they don't, Jiyuu was the one who found her, he was out hunting."

Kaogme nodded, "This is horrible."

"Yeah," He ran a hand over his face, taking a deep breath.

"You gonna be okay?" Kagome asked him, laying a hand on his shoulder.

Reimei blushed, nodding his head. "I'm the one who's supposed to ask that. You're the woman here."

Kagome snorted, "I'm not the one who's green." she kept back a laugh when his face darkened. "Do they know what did it?"

"No. But we do know its not human, whatever it is. But, youkai? We're still clueless."

She nodded again, waving her father over when he spotted her. "News?" She asked when he walked up.

"Nothing," He rubbed a hand over his eyes. "Ive never seen anything like this. This had to be random. It's too messy not to be." he looked at the body then back at Kagome. "What are you doing here anyway? This really isn't something you should see."

Kagome crossed her arms, "I'm the only one who's not looking like they're gonna puke any moment. Half the people out here look like they're gonna be sick." She raised a hand, gesturing around her.

Kenkou nodded, sighing. "Well, nonetheless, i would like you to leave." He held up a hand before she could protest. "Please? I would feel better if you were inside the village."

Kagome sighed, but nodded. She gave Reimei a smile and a pat on the arm and headed back to the gate. One last look to the crumpled form of Zeena, she prayed for her soul and left the woods.

Kagome walked up to the village elders homes, making her way to Anraku's old home. Stopping at the shoji, she raised a hand and knocked lightly. She turned around and waited for someone to answer, her foot tapping. Behind her she heard a whoosh, indicating the door had opened.

She turned with a smile on her face. "Hey, guys--" she froze.

Youko was leaning against the door, a sleepy look on his face. His hair was tousled and hanging around his face. He was only wearing a sheet, and the way it was drooping, Kagome was sure there was nothing underneath. Kagome sucked in a deep breath. A lazy smile spread over his face, the sleep fading before her eyes.

Kagome spun around quickly, a blush raging on her features. She cleared her suddenly dry throat. "Sorry," her voice wavered slightly. "I..umm, well...damnit! Go put some god damned clothes on!! You kinky kitsune!!"

He chuckled deeply, "Hey, don't yell at me, love. I sleep in the nude, how was i to know it was you at the door?"

"Go on!"

He laughed at her and turned, heading back in. "Come on, lover. Sit down and i will go change."

"Stop calling me 'lover'!" But when she turned around, he was already walking back into his room, shoulders shaking with laughter. "Damn, fox." She muttered, walking inside and shutting the shoji behind her. The walls were a cream color, bare. The floor was polished wood, a light oak color. There was a small wooden table in the middle of the room, a darker color than the floor, black cushions laid around it. Clean, neat, and bare. Hm, who would've thought?

Kagome sat down Indian style on one of the cushions, biting her lip. She hissed when a fang nicked the skin, "Damnit." she pulled the abused flesh in her mouth.

Youko came out, wearing his normal attire. His hair neat and strait as it always it. He sat in front of Kagome. His eyes widened. "You're bleeding,"

Kagome waved him off, "It's nothing, i just wasn't paying attention." the bleeding had stopped now, but her lips was red from suckling on it. Being half human killed some of her healing powers that youkia possess. "Where's Kuronue?"

Youko frowned, something flickering across his eyes that Kagome couldn't read. "Am i not good enough for your company?" he joked, but truth was laced behind his words.

Kagome's mouth opened, the closed, then opened again. "No! No, that's not it. I was just..wondering that's all." She smiled brightly at him, her fangs glinting.

Youko smiled back, a soft, gentle smile that Kagome had never seen on him before. Its made him look younger. "Good. He's asleep." he nodded to the side, gesturing to the room behind her.

Kagome glanced back, turning, placing her hands on the table. "There's been a murder."

Youko blinked, his eyebrows raising. "A murder, here?" his arms folding across his lap.

Kagome nodded, "Yes, just this morning. A local girl, around my age. Kami, Youko, she was torn apart. Like someone was..trying to eat her. Her heart was missing, and she had bite marks all over her." Kagome sighed, the feelings of grief starting to come up. "I didn't really like the girl, but we had played together when we were young."

Youko smelled salt, but Kagome was holding back her tears well. He stood, walking over to her. He sat behind her and pulled her into his lap. He smiled faintly as she latched onto his clothing and buried her head in his neck. Wetness started to run down his collar bone. He petted her head, running his fingers through the soft strands, murmuring comforting words in her ear. The shoji door opened behind him. He turned his head slightly to the left, Kuronue stood in the doorway, fully dressed and staring at him and Kagome. A look of concern for her tears and a pinch a jealousy for Youko's comforting. He walked around the room, coming to sit at the same spot Youko had occupied.

Kagome sniffed, nuzzling Youko's neck. His sent of oranges and chocolate soothed her. Youko was drawing small circles on the small of her back, any other time she would have yelled at him for getting so physical with her person, but this time the movements made her feel better. She raised her head, turning around in his lap. She heard him groan slightly and a blush tainted her cheeks. "Sorry," she muttered.

Youko grinned, "Oh, no problem at all, love." He chuckled when she smacked him lightly on the chest.

"Pervert."

She scooted off his lap and onto another cushion. She spotted Kuronue and instantly felt bad. The look of hurt on his face was clear to her and she fought the urge to go and cuddle with him. "Hey, sleepy head." she said, flashing him a smile.

Kuronue buried the jealously and hurt and gave her a grin. "What's wrong, Kagome?" concern shined bright in his lavender eyes.

Kagome felt warmed by his concern for her, she placed her head in her hands. "There was a murder, and old friend."

Kuronue gaped at her, "A murder? Here?" kagome almost chuckled at his mirrored question. Really, do him and Youko always think alike?

Youko nodded for her, "Yeah, and from the sounds of it, its pretty gruesome, too."

Kagome shivered, "You guys have got to come see it, I've never seen anything so..." she stuck out her tongue, "nasty."

They nodded, standing. "Wait, now?" kagome wasn't sure she wanted to see the body again.

Youko grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet, ignoring her squeak. "Yeah, before they take the body to get it ready for burial."

Kagome slumped her shoulders, nodding she said, "Okay, but," she walked over to Kuronue, ignoring his confused look, and jumped on his back, causing him to sway a little. His hands instantly went for her thighs, making sure she didn't fall. Kagome grinned over his shoulder at Youko's look. "you have to carry me, crying makes me tired." Kuronue chuckled, causing a vibrating feeling to run thought her.

Youko frowned at her, "Why couldn't i have carried you?" his voice held a whine to it.

Kagome laughed at him, "Phpptt! Kinky kitsune, you should know better than to ask such an obvious question." she scoffed.

Youko 'humph'ed and walked out of the house, his tail swishing in jealousy. Kagome sighed at his childish behavior and rested her head beside Kuronue's. Kuronue started out the door after him, grinning stupidly.

Kagome looked at him, feeling his obvious happiness from the situation. She rolled her eyes and kissed his cheek. She stifled a laugh at his stumbled footsteps. "What?" she asked innocently, as though nothing had happened.

"Nothing," he choked out, his voice holding a squeak.

------

Devious eyes watched from a tree above. Smirking, the figure vanished, leaving a sinister chuckled and the smell of koumori blood in its wake.
