Chapter 1: The Beginning
^^^
Before a time of modernized machines, paved streets and the thought of what’s next, a time of magic and mystery ruled all across the land, a single battle, a struggle between good and evil, a brave priestess by the name of Midoriko, gave up her life in hope to unite humans and demons. When the final battle came too great, Midoriko summoned the last of her power, and imprisoned the lives of the countless demons and herself, into a single jewel. The Shikon no Tama is said to be able to gain its possessor great power and grant a wish to whomever has come to posses it. Taken in by the priestess’ village, a native Taijia village, the jewel was to be guarded from any who seek its power.
Countless battles, and unnecessary bloodshed became the small village. Unable to bear the burden, the village leader proposed to give the Shikon no Tama to a worthy priestess, able to use her powers to keep the jewel safe. The chosen priestess was the elder of two sisters, Kikyo. With the responsibility of the jewel now in her hands, Kikyo day and night kept the jewel safe from all.
As time passed, a hanyou hearing of the jewels powers, sought the jewel for himself. Wishing to become full demon. With every chance at steeling the jewel thwarted by the young priestess, the hanyou became persistent, trying to gain the jewel, but the priestess was there, holding him back.
Before long an injured bandit was found half dead. Kikyo and her younder sister Kaede, began caring for the wounded man. Wanting the kind priestess to himself, the bandit Onigumo, called for demons to devour his body in exchange for a new more powerful one made from the bodies of demons.
Finding the bandit no longer in the cave he resided in, Kikyo said a final prayer to the man.
With the hanyou still trying for the jewel, every attempt, the priestess Kikyo never finished off the hanyou. Instead, allowed him his tries, becoming somewhat a game to the priestess. Time after time the priestess kept the hanyou at bay, until he became a familiarity to the village, secretly keeping away any weaker demons from the jewel. Before long the hanyou and the priestess began to grow close, enough to introduce himself as Inuyasha.
Few years have passed when unknown to each other, feelings of love began to envelope the two. One day, after finding the hanyou watching her in a clearing, Kikyo invited the hanyou a seat by her. Talking of the jewel and of a way to permanently rid the jewel from the Earth, the priestess offers the hanyou a chance at mortality, becoming human to purify the jewel and living a life with her. The hanyou Inuyasha, finding a place he felt he belonged, agreed to the priestess’ wish. Deciding on a date to make the wish, Kikyo, along with the Shikon no Tama, arrived at the same clearing, two days later.
Onigumo, disguised as Inuyasha, injured the priestess, claiming never wanting to become human. Kikyo, feeling betrayed, wandered back to her village, finding Inuyasha fleeing from a burning building with the Shikon jewel in hand.
The hanyou too, was deceived by a disguised Onigumo, but as Kikyo. Seeing as Kikyo had betrayed him in believing her lies, began firing arrow after arrow in an attempt to kill him. Inuyasha hurt and betrayed ran back to the village and stole the jewel to become demon, but as he fled from the burning village, he was pinned one last time to a tree, where he slept for fifty years.
Once her deed was done, Kikyo had her sister Kaede to burn the jewel with her body, so that it may never appear on the living realm again.
Five-hundred years later, a girl, the reincarnated priestess, was dragged down an abandoned well on her families shrine by a centipede demon, where she met the sleeping hanyou, and released him in time of saving her from mistress centipede who had bit into her side and produced the Shikon no Tama, on Earth once again.
To keep the disobedient demon from causing harm, an elderly Kaede cast a spell upon Inuyasha, a beaded necklace by the command of the future priestess, a ‘sit’, and he would be subdued. With the jewel being sensed by all magical creatures, Inuhasha protected the future priestess from all.
With the jewels breaking after being swallowed by a crow demon, the priestess of the future along with the hanyou Inuyasha, encountered many enemies, one being the elder half brother of Inuyasha, Sesshoumaru, and friends along the way, a hentai monk Miroku, the last of the Taiji Sango along with her demon cat Kirara, and an orphaned kitsune kit named Shippo. Each traveled together with a common enemy, human Onigumo now the hanyou Naraku.
Fighting many incarnations of Naraku, the group, along with a mutual agreement with Sesshoumaru, manage to defeat the evil hanyou. With Inuyasha’s death, a life was formed after, the monk Miroku and Taiji Sango, became a family caring for the young kit Shippo, along with their own seven children.
After the death of Naraku, the priestess of the future, along with the brother of Inuyasha, Sesshoumaru, were said to have completed the jewel alone, where the last that was seen of the priestess of the future, lay locked in the mind of a cold hearted demon.

Slamming down her book, Asagao stretches her arms from the long read. ‘Why is it that every book I read about the jewel is so vague?’ Getting up and walking around her room, Asagao yawns, her long raven hair brushing her back as she walks around trying to regain movement in her legs. Looking up to her ceiling she brushes back a loose bangs strand of silver-white hair from landing in her eyes.
Walking over to the mirror to brush her twin colored hair, a few strokes and looking closely at her honey colored eyes for a stray eyelash, she leaves her bedroom. “Mom, what’s for dinner?” She asks walking down the stairs leading to the livingroom. Continuing her walk into the kitchen, she is nearly knocked over by her white dog Inuyasha.
As a child, Asagao was fascinated by the stories her great grandfather told about demons and humans living together. Which is where the name Inuyasha came from, her favorite story was the story of the Shikon no Tama. Her great grandfather used to say how her family was part of the history of the jewel. Now, he stays in a nursing home, with her grandmother looking out for him.
“Inuyasha! Sit boy!” Asagao said while laughing at his antics of laying down at sit instead of actually sitting. Poking her head out from the door frame, Asagao looks into the kitchen, the smell of chicken and rice flooding her senses. “Mm, mom that smells great!” Walking over to the fridge to give her mother a hand at the vegetables needing to be heated.
“Nice to see your finally down Asagao, how is your report going?” Asagao’s mother, Kagome asks.
With a moan and groan, she sits down on a kitchen chair and throws a ball to Inuyasha, who fetches it gladly. “Everything I read is all the same thing, ‘Future Priestess’, or ‘Miko of the future’, don’t we have one decent book that tells me the name of that priestess?” Asagao looks hopefully at her mother. When she gets no response, she tosses her head back and retrieves the ball to throw again, but bounces off the wall, back into the kitchen, and nearly knocks over the rice kettle.
Kagome without looking up, grabs the ball in mid air, and turns around to face her daughter. “Asagao, please, if your going to play with Inuyasha go outside.” She says with a sigh, tossing the ball back to her daughter.
Sheepishly Asagao smiles, “Yeah, sure mom.” and walks quickly out the door.
Once outside, she begins bouncing the ball, making Inuyasha anxious to play. Walking and sitting on the bench by the God tree, Asagao lazily throws her dog its ball. Inuyasha trying to gain speed quickly tosses dirt into the air where he skids to a stop and full out runs back with the ball in mouth.
After a few more tosses and a very drool covered ball later, Asagao grabs the leash handing from a branch off the God tree and leashes Inuyasha. “Come on boy, lets go for a walk.” A hyped up Inuyasha wags his tail anxiously at the chance to roam around the city.
Hearing the snap of the leash and collar, Inuyasha drags Asagao down the never-ending stairs to the sidewalk below. Walking to the left leading to the out skirts of Tokyo, Inuyasha walks left and right to the grass and dirt then back to the road, looking for any unfamiliar smells.
After walking a short distance, someone calls Asagao’s name. Turning to see who it is, her best friend Rei, is running to catch up to her. Glad to see his face, Asagao momentarily stops her walk with Inuyasha, and waits for Rei to catch up. “Hey Rei, what have you been up to?”
Panting lightly at his run, Rei, walks alongside Asagao, his brown hair plastered to his face. “Nothing much, I was actually on my way to your house, you finished your report yet?” He asks, giving Inuyasha a quick pat on the head when he jumped to his chest.
“Yeah, but everything I have is not very good, all of it seems vague, out of all the books my shrine has, not one has the name of the ‘Future Priestess’, or even the complete journey.” Moaning again at her misfortune, she glares at Rei for laughing at her. “Does my predicament amuse you Rei Sashi?”
“Sure does,” He says while smiling at her, “but why not do something real? You know, like, something on history?” He looks to her. She’s looking at him very annoyed like.
“This is history! Just because it has a few demons people-“ he stops her before she can finish.
“That’s just it! Demons! Their not real, so why do you insist on believing they are?”
“Why do you believe their not? If you’d just read some of the books I’ve read you would believe it too! Where do you think a lot of the stories we’re told as kids come from? They come from real events!”
“Yes, but that’s just what they are! Stories! All the ‘Demon’ Lords were just people who did cruel deeds and were thought to be inhuman.”
“You see, that’s where your wrong! They were real, they used their enchanted weapons and inhuman powers to rule all of the lands! Like when my great Grandfather tells me about a Lord Sess-“
Getting tired of their repetitive arguments Rei decides to be the first to drop the subject, quite cruelly. “Asagao! That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you! Your grandfather tells you these stories! He’s a senile old man!” Seeing the look in her eyes, he knows he made her feel bad. “Look, Asagao, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings, I’m sorry, but you have to admit, your grandfather is ill, and the stories he told you about are just things his mind made up.” Putting a comforting arm on her shoulder, he feels bad for making her upset.
“I know Rei, but there was a time, before my great grandpa was senile. When he told me stories of demon Lords and monks and priestesses that roamed with these magical abilities.” Taking a deep breath and letting it out in a sigh, she looks at the cloudy skies. “He used to say ‘Just because you haven’t seen it, doesn’t mean it was never there.’”
Looking sad at her, his blue eyes light up. “I know how to make you feel better!” Seeing as she looks clueless, he narrows his eyes and smirks a bit.
Realizing what he means, she too smirks. “I’ll give you a two second head start.” She says. After his two seconds are up, she and Inuyasha run after him.
^^^
“I would like two chocolate strawberry swirl cones please.” Rei tells the vendor. Once getting his order, he walks over to their bench. “Here you go Asagao.” Taking one cone from the tray he hands it over to her.
“Thank you!” She says while eating her ice-cream, giving some of her strawberry to a whining Inuyasha. “I’ll need to be home soon, mom’s making dinner. Wanna stay over for dinner?”
Licking off the chocolate from his mouth, he looks to the setting sun, “Don’t think I can tonight. My dad is supposed to be coming home, I thought of making him something for his return. If he actually comes home.” He says disappointedly, continuing to eat his ice-cream.
Knowing better then to say anything, she finishes off her cone in record time, and gets up, “Guess I’ll see you at school then. See ya.” She says while waving. “Come on Inuyasha.” Said dog gets up and follows her.
“Yeah, see ya tomorrow.” Rei says while waving good-bye.
^^^
Walking into the main shrine, Asagao slips off her shoes, “I’m back mom.” she says taking off Inuyasha’s leash.
“Just in time, dinners ready.” Kagome says with a sad smile.
During dinner, Kagome asks if she may read her report. “Hm, yeah sure,” Asagao says looking surprised that her mom wanted to read her homework.
Excusing herself from the table she walks up the stairs to her room, gathering up the papers and exiting back to the kitchen.
Handing her the papers, she sits back down, looking nervously at her mom going over the papers. A few minutes of reading, Kagome gives a small laugh. Looking over to Asagao, Kagome smiles a bit, “Did you know that Kikyo was brought back to life during the future miko’s travels with the group.”
Asagao’s face lit up at hearing this little bit of information. “No! None of the books I read told of that, how did you know?” She smiles brightly at her mom, hoping for some more bits of information her books forgot to mention.
“It was passed down through stories and tales. Did any of your books tell of a girl named Rin?” Kagome asks. Asagao quickly shakes her head, not wanting to look away at her mothers insight. “She was a human ward to Lord Sesshoumaru of the Western lands. He brought her back to life after being killed by a pack of wolves.”
“He used his Tenseiga right? But it never listens to him? How did he get it to work for him?” Kagome smiles warmly to her daughter, her sapphire eyes going hazy for a while, thinking about her teenage years.
“From what I gathered, the sword wanted him to bring the girl back to life.” Hearing her daughter sharp intake of breath, she looks at her. Asagao looks so excited about the fact of magic swords.
“WOW! How did our family get a hold of this info? Were we related to one of the group members? Did you know what reason the group was formed? The stories never told Why the group was after Naraku, except he had pieces of the jewel. Come on mom spill.” Asagao says anxiously, her leg bobbing up and down with excitement.
Kagome began to laugh, first softly, then an all out gut-grabber. At first Asagao was surprised to see her mom actually laughing like she was. After a second of registering the surprise, she too, begins to laugh with her mom.
“I believe that’s enough discussing about the Shard-hunters.”
“The what?” Asagao looks at her mom curiously.
“Many people called the group ‘Shard-hunters’”
“Oh.”
R 20;I think it’s time for bed, Asagao. You have school tomorrow.” Hearing Asagao whine and walking away while muttering, ‘Wish I could time travel.’ Kagome looked sadly to her daughter thinking, ‘No you wouldn’t.’ Cleaning up their dinner, Kagome washes up.
Going into her room, Kagome slides the door closed. Resting a bit on the door, Kagome breaths deeply, forcing back tears in her eyes. Walking over to her bed, she removes the ribbon Shippo gave her from her hair. Walking to her dresser, she places it inside her diary, where she kept the flowers Rin gave to her preserved in the book. Opening the top drawer, she digs around a bit and finds a box she keeps Sango’s mask and Miroku’s glove and rosary.
Whispering to herself she prays to her friends where ever they are. Putting back the box, she opens her jewelry box, the hair clip Jaken gave her sits in a drawer with her bracelets. Opening the last drawer to her jewelry box, she takes out the sapphire necklace Sesshoumaru gave her, the day she first tried to fuse the jewel.
Remembering how he looked at her, so carefully held that she had trouble reading him. Knowing that he looked at her for as long as he did, she knew.
Bringing the necklace up to her lips, she lightly kisses the gem when a tear falls from her eyes below her chin and lands on the sapphire. “Oh, Sesshou, where are you? Are you still alive?”
Behind Kagome’s door, Asagao listens quietly, hearing her mothers silent sobs and cries.
Heart broken for not knowing what to do, Asagao leaves to her bedroom farther down the hall.
^^^
At the first ring of her alarm, Asagao raises out of bed, stretching and popping her back, she heads for the showers. Making the water nice and hot, she strips and enters the steamy bath.
Relaxing a bit she lets her aching muscles loosen. Done and out of the shower, she wraps herself in a towel, plugs in her blow-dryer, and drys her hair. Every day she wonders if a shower one day will wash away her black hair leaving her with silver-white, or wash away the silver-white and leaving it black.
With her hair dryer then it was before, she walks to her room to put on her uniform. Finishing her dress in the green sailor top and skirt, she walks down stairs to find breakfast ready for her. Looking around the table, a note is placed by the pancakes.
Asagao,
I had to leave early for an early morning wedding ceremony. I’ll see you after school.
Love, Mom
Seeing as how she’ll be eating breakfast alone, she grabs a pancake and eats it on the way to school, throwing the other into Inuyasha’s dog dish.
Grabbing her backpack, making sure her papers are all in, she puts on her slip on shoes, walks out, and locks the door behind her. Chewing on the fluffy meal, Asagao skips down the stairs to the shrine, she’ll be early to school today.
Walking a few blocks down, she makes a quick stop by Rei’s place.
Knocking on the door, she is greeted by none other than Rei himself, “Oh, hey, Asagao, what are you doing out so early?” He invites her inside, still getting ready himself.
Slipping off her shoes before entering, she looks around.“My mom had a ceremony she needed to go to. No reason for me to stay by my self, so I left early. Did your dad ever make it in last night?” He shakes his head no, “Oh. Hey come on, cheer up, at least you know your dad. My mom doesn’t even talk about him.”
Taking a deep breath, he agrees, “Yeah, I guess so. Make yourself at home while I go get ready.”
Taking that as an invite, she jump lies on his couch, landing with her legs dangling from the side.
Five minutes later, he comes from a side room, dressed in the guys uniform. “Lets go.” Rei holds the door open for Asagao as she puts on her shoes.
^^^
At campus, the two split up to go to their lockers, then rush to make it to class the first. Laughing that Rei made it first, they enter the class, handing in their homework and taking a seat.
“I hope you all chose an interesting topic to write about.” Mr. Mitsurugi asks, eyeing suspiciously to Asagao. “Once I have all of the papers graded, I will ask the top three to read their reports out loud to the class, so as to give the slackers an idea of a good paper.” Walking over to his desk, he turns out the lights and begins his slide presentation.
As the day passes by, Asagao has a funny feeling cross through her gut as she waits by her locker for Rei to come and walk home with her. Why doesn’t mom ever talk about my dad? Thinking to deeply, Rei taps her on the shoulder, scaring her out of thought. “Rei! You scared me!” She says while holding her hand to her heart.
He laughs a bit and apologizes. “Come on lets go before the ‘crowd’ arrives.” Just as he said it, they arrived.
“Why hello Asagao, how have you been?” A senior with brown shoulder length hair asks walking up to her with a challenging smirk.
Agitated that they didn’t make before She arrived, Asagao turns around hiding her anger. “Hello to you to, Sakura. What brings this unexpected visit?” She says, her left eye twitching slightly, forcing a smile that shows the tip of her pointed canines.
Rei tried to intervene before they got hostile with each other. “Now, now ladies. Calm down we-“ but he was cut off sharply before he could finish.
“Can it sophomore!” She bit out at him.
“What is your deal Sakura? What did we ever do to you?” Asagao tries to defend her friend.
Asagao takes a step closer accepting the challenge. As soon as the line was crossed, Sakura had Asagao liften in the air by her collar and thrown across her shoulders.
Hitting the concrete hard on her right shoulder, her sleeve was scratched up and a scrapped knee. Staggering up, Asagao growls low in her throat.
Rei rushes over to see if she’s alright, “Asagao! Just let it go there is no honor in fighting her.” Rei tries to convince her to stay down.
Not listening to his advice, she gets up effortlessly. The longer she stares hatred towards Sakura the louder her growl raises.
Sakura seeing as how she made Asagao so angry smirks triumphantly and addresses the onlookers, “Look, I think I got her mad.” An uproar of upperclassmen laughter gets drowned out by Asagao’s charging to Sakura, who too attacks. Half way from seeing red, a shock inside of herself makes her double over in pain, Sakura has her by the hair and knees her in the stomach.
Rei tries to get passed the onlookers, but is held back by some male seniors. Struggling through their grips, he punches a senior in the face, momentarily letting him go, but others are waiting. Rei is struck in the back of his neck before falls to his stomach unconscious.
After getting the wind knocked out of her, Asagao, grabs Sakura’s wrist, using her sharp nails, scratches her across her hand. Sakura screams as a fast flowing amount of blood drips from her wounded hand. “You Bitch!” Sakura screams while using her good hand to hit her in the nose. Falling to her back the rest of Sakura’s party decide to aid the senior.
Asagao is kicked and dragged across the floor, being beaten before teachers are able to break up the crowds and aid the fallen students.
Chaos is everywhere as the students rush to leave before being accused of aiding.
Bloody and bruised, Asagao struggles not to cry out, her uniform is in shreds, and all she could think about was how weak she was.
Asagao woke up in the hospital, her mother sitting on a chair by her bed. Kagome looks on disappointedly. Asagao turns away, shameful that her mother saw her like this.
In the quiet room, Kagome gets up and gently lays Asagao a change of cloths. “Get dressed, we’re leaving.” Asagao nods and quickly dresses, her arms and head have bandages, but she already feels better.
Walking out of the room, Kagome is leaning against the door, without looking, they walk to the service desk. “I am checking Asagao Higurashi out of the hospital.” Without gaining confirmation, they leave to a car parked close by.
Getting in the passenger seat, Asagao looks down to her legs, they are bruised but healing nicely. The ride to the shrine was quiet. No one said a word as they sat in the car.
“Why did you get into that fight Asagao?” Kagome asks looking down at her steering wheel.
“I didn’t start it.”
“I didn’t ask if you started it. I asked why you were in it.” Kagome looks sternly to her daughter, demanding answers.
Looking at her mother, she turns to the window, “Sakura has always been on my case since I got higher markings then her in my freshmen entrance exam. Rumor had it she was mad that my eyes were golden, and my hair seemed to never damage.” At that she laughed and closed her eyes. “There’s got to be more to it though, but I don’t know.” Asagao looked to Kagome for any sign of disappointment.
Kagome took a deep breath, thinking hard, she asks, “Do you have trouble controlling your anger, Asagao?” She looks deep into her eyes.
Shocked she looks at her mom to see if she heard right. “Of course, why would I not?”
They look at each other for a while before Kagome opens the door and exits the car. She leaves Asagao in the car, and walks up the shrine steps.
