Chapter 4: Detective work

^^^

Kagome has been locked in her study since six in the morning, it is now eleven. Asagao dressed earlier that morning, waiting outside Kagome's study. Asagao had nothing to do that entire day, she wasn't allowed to go to school, or even to leave the house. Asagao felt trapped not being able to move, so she waits, waits outside the door for the slightest signal of a break-through in the search for Asagao's normality.

Asagao's eye began to twitch, her eyes shut, adgitation grown immensely in the hour or so of doing nothing but sitting on her legs waiting. Asagao's back begins to ache.

A thud is heard on the other side of the door, and Kagome turns to look at the door.

On the other side, Asagao leaned on the door, her fore head plastered on the wood. Her ears are back, Asagao sweats from embarrassment, and puts her hands to the door, and thrusts back. She falls back and watches the ceiling.

Kagome leans her chair back and talks to Asagao through the door. "Asagao, if your that bored just find yourself something to do, your bothering me."

Asagao growls from the other side and opens the door slightly for her head to fit through. Half her face is seen glaring at her mother, "If I am to stay in this house and suffer, then you are to suffer as well..." Kagome looks to her daughter with a 'are you kidding me?' look before turning back around and continues her reading.

Asagao closes the door and stands. Her mother won the fight, Asagao just couldn't stay still for as long as her mother. Still facing the door, she looks to her right, the closet that they store their winter cloths in gives her an idea. Walking over, she opens the closet, coats and scarves and other insulated clothing are hung. Grabbing at a red scarf, she looks around, and quietly closes the door. She sneaks into her room, shifting her eyes back and forth, a sneaky smile plays on her face.

It is now, eleven thirty, standing in front of the mirror, Asagao looks at herself, leaning in she stares at her face, before holding the scarf over her head and covering her ears. Asagao ties the scarf behind her head, using it like a headband. She smiles, other than a lump, her head looks normal, and the scarf goes over where her human ears were once. Looking around, she goes over to her dresser. A pair of rined-stone lined, pink sunglasses lay under a piece of paper. Holding them open, she puts on the glasses, looking at herself one last time, Asagao stares at her tail, the one thing she doesn't think she can conceal very easily.

Thinking a bit on the subject, she wraps the tail around her neck, giving it the illusion of a star boa. Posing in front of the mirror, she blows a kiss to herself and laughs. Perfect. Grabbing at a sweater, Asagao opens her window, and jumps.

In the city, Asagao finds a pay phone unoccupied and decides to make a few calls. In total she calls three people, but only manages to reach two of them, Asagao leaves the two instructions to meet her at a close restaurant. She explains that it is very important and that she needs some very important questions answered.

At twelve forty-five, the two people arrive shortly after one another, they both great each other with an 'Oh my god! I haven't seen you in ages!' Asagao waves the two over, and they all sit.

Asagao was happy to see the two girls her mother used to spend time with. "Thank you again Eri, Yuka for coming on such short notice." Asagao says cheerfully.

Eri smiles back at her, "It's no problem Asagao, it has been so long since we last saw you, I was surprised that you called. When was the last time I saw you? Oh you were such a little thing back then! What's with the get-up? Are you in the rock star phase or something?" Eri laughs and goes back to talking to Yuka.

Asagao waits while the two girls catch up on the last time they saw each other, arguing over events and laughing at the memories. She tried to lighten up, but the questions plaguing her mind wouldn't let her. When Eri and Yuka remembered Asagao, they apologized and asked her why she called them.

Asagao smiles sadly, she begins to doubt whether or not these girls would have the answers to her questions. "Eri, Yuka, you are my mom's best friends when she was growing up. I figured you would know a personal question." Asagao prepares herself, "Did my mom ever tell you anything about... my father?"

The two girls grew quiet, the question wasn't something they had expected her to ask. "Well, uh-" Yuka began, but couldn't seem to find the words she was looking for.

Eri tried her luck with a, "Gosh, let's see..."

Asagao gave them time to think about the question, it was years ago, perhaps her mother had lots of boyfriends.

Yuka was the one to finally speak out. "Asagao, what is this all about?" She looks to said girl, who then begins to clutch her hands on her knees. Asagao felt worried and upset that this may be it.

"Well, its just that, my mother will not tell me my fathers name. Lately I've been wondering who my father was, and well, I guess I feel I have a right to know..." Asagao looks helplessly down at her arms, 'This was a waste of time! Why would my mom tell them and not me?' Just before Asagao was about to get up and apologize for calling them there, Eri begins to talk.

Eri smiled, "I remember once way back when we were in high school, Kagome became very ill. She would miss school a lot and the time she was in school, she would talk about this boy who she met. She would say, 'I can't believe him!' or 'That stupid jerk!'" Eri began to laugh. "She would always tell us that he was the most insensitive, rude, obnoxious, ignorant, unbelievable excuse for a man she ever heard of, but when she would rant on and on, a sparkle came to her eye and she began to say what a nice, kind, wonderful, brave person he was." Eri's eyes clouded over at the memory, "Kagome had told us many times about him, we were always wondering how she had time for these stories when she was sick most of the time."

Yuka thought about their time in high school. "Yeah, he had the strangest name too, like his parents were midevil or something. It was hard to forget, Inuyasha he was called, or at least, that's what Kagome told us his name was, we always thought she made him up. Like it was just some dream she had, Inuyasha always fighting over her with this Kouga person, or how Inuyasha would always choose his ex girlfriend over Kagome."

Asagao watched on with wide eyes. Is this her father? Was this Inuyasha her father, and Kouga, all these names were so familiar to her, like the legends her grandfather would tell her when she was younger.

Eri took over the story, looking sad when she continued. "Kagome was gone for a long time after that, her parents said she was in the hospital for an extended time due to one of her illnesses, and that we couldn't see her. We tried every hospital in town, looking for a 'Kagome Higurashi' patient, but none of the hospitals have ever had her there. After about two months or so, we went to her parents for an explanation. They didn't know what to say to us, so they each excused themselves, and after that, we stopped going over to her house.

"A few weeks later, Kagome was back at school, everyone was so happy! But... Kagome, she looked sad, like she was empty. It wasn't the same Kagome we all knew, this one was blank. We asked her about it once, she said that Inuyasha had died, and she cried, she had broke down and cried and..." Eri stopped her story, she had began to cry. She was holding her fists to her eyes, wiping away tears as Yuka comforted her.

"Hey, it's ok Eri, it was along time ago remember?" Yuka looked to Asagao, a tear jerking at the edge of her eyes, "Kagome had told us one day that, a very evil man had murdered him, and she couldn't do anything to help him. She said, she wasn't even herself, he died not seeing her." Still patting Eri's back, Yuki continued, "Kagome had said she stayed at Inuyasha's brother's home, I can't remember his name, can you Eri?" Yuka asked, Eri had quieted and shook her head no. "Well, she had said, after she mourned his death, she has said good-bye to all her friends one last time, she had told us how she felt so sad, but so happy at what she did."

There was a pause, Asagao was confused, but worried, she had a though of what it was they were trying to say, but, she found it weird, 'mom didn't... did she?' "Well, what did she do?"

Eri regained her position and took a deep breath, "Kagome had come home and told us of some strange pains she was having. Her mother took her to the doctors and we all found out Kagome was pregnant, with you..."

Asagao's eyes were saucers! 'Oh my god! She did do it! With her boyfriends brother?!'

The girls could see Asagao's confusion and worry. "But don't think that just because that took place she didn't do it out of love! She did love your father! We asked her the same question!"

Asagao regained herself and asked, "Then why haven't I ever seen him if they loved each other so much?"

Yuka and Eri looked to each other and said at the same time, "She wouldn't tell us..."

After talking to Kagome's best friends, Asagao couldn't help wondering what it was she was missing, why were these names so familiar? For some reason, the answers were in the back of her mind but they just didn't make any sense to her. 'The names are so familiar to the story...'

It was the story that gave her the thought. 'Great-grampa!' Asagao began to run to the nursing home her great-grandfather was staying at, all the while screaming at herself, why didn't she think of going to him in the first place?! He was the one who told her the stories, and called in sick for her mother. 'Why is it now that I only think about it?'

"He's a senile old man!'

'Oh yeah, that's why...' The memory of Rei calling her grandfather senile after their argument over her history report, that was the reason she was afraid to go to him. Asagao slows to a jog before coming to a complete stop. 'What if everything he told me was a lie?' Looking down at her palms, she can see her nails, elongated and sharpened to a fine point. She clutches and looks determined to the sky. 'My grandfather would never lie to me.'

Kagome grew tired of reading the book. Her eyes began to ache and her muscles began to cramp. Nothing the book needed to create the pendent seemed too difficult to get a hold of, most of the items required could be found in the temple. But there was one problem, Kagome had never been taught to control her powers in anything more than an arrow, how can she channel her energy into a gem and have it create the illusion needed to hold the demonic characteristics.

Sighing to herself, Kagome gets up, deciding a short trip to the kitchen for a snack would help her think more. Rubbing her temples, Kagome expected to see Asagao staring trying to stare holes through the door. Down in the kitchen, Kagome grabbed a glass and filled it with milk, grabbing at the cookie jar for a tasty treat, and walking to the table. Kagome flops down onto a chair, and nibbles on the cookie.

A whine behind her tells Kagome, Asagao hasn't done her chores yet today. Watching her daughters dog wag it's tail in a beg, Kagome breaks off a piece of her cookie, and tosses it in the air for Inuyasha to catch. Said dog jumps in excitement, sitting back down and tapping with his front paws as he inches closer for another treat. "Sorry boy no more cookies for you."

Looking into the living room, Kagome checks to see if Asagao is watching TV. Seeing that all is quiet, she walks over to the stairs. "Asagao, have you fed Inuyasha yet?" No answer. Frustrated, she goes over to the pantry and pulls out the dog chow and scoops in a bowl for Inuyasha.

The fluffy white dog barks his thanks before skidding to a stop in front of the dog dish, swallowing his food in one sitting.

Kagome washes her hands, and finishes her milk, leaving the cookie jar on the table. Walking through the living room to the stairs, Kagome goes to Asagao's room. Knocking quietly, thinking she may be asleep, she peers into the room.

Asagao's window is wide open, the breeze flaps the drapes.

Kagome's eyes widen. "Oh no! Asagao if you stepped foot out of this house so help me..!" Kagome left the room quickly. Grabbing her purse from her study, she runs down the stairs and speeds across the yard. People are seen walking around the shrine grounds, praying and admiring the building.

Kagome pays no mind to the visitors, she carefully races down the shrine steps, and unlocks her car. Before she enters, Kagome concentrates on trying to feel out a demonic aura. Giving up on finding her that way, she jumps into her car, and decides to go into the city, 'perhaps she was just too far to for me to sense...'
