Author's note,

Alrighty then, you won't see too many of these notes from me as they tend to irritate me while reading through other writer's fanfictions so I shan't bother you with mine [much] - granted I may be persuaded to reply to amusing reviews from readers (Hint, hint XDDD). Anywho this is my first attempt at a fanfiction and I must warn you I'm not too dead set on the completion of it. Heh, heh sorry 'bout that if you find it a waste of time. Please note that the ONLY Yu Yu Hakusho episodes I've seen are that of Yusuke dying for the first time and a few of the tournament and whatnot. Sadly though, that was a long, long, long, LONG, LONG and did I mention LONG? time ago so please forgive me if any characters seem to be a little out of it 'kay? It'd be much appreciated - more so if you'd point it out and and say how instead they might act in your opinion. Likewise, I HAVE seen many episodes of Inuyasha and actually own a couple of the manga so if you find you have a problem with how one of the characters from that storyline is acting - I don't mind if you take offense to them acting out of character for they are simply acting how I perceive they would (So if someone seems a tad bit too brave or vice versa well... You catch my drift - I hope... its just how I thought they'd react, I apologize once again if you find yourself disagreeing.) And to conclude this rambling so you may actually get to the story, if you find a typo or a mispelling of a word - sorry about that too, sometimes my mind works faster than my fingers type or I don't know the exact spelling or I'm just having a lapse in sanity.

Well then, ON TO THE STORY! .....WOOT!

Enjoy <3

PROLOGUE

The red haired youth huffed in annoyance as he laid on his stomach with his chin pillowed on crossed arms. Emerald eyes narrowed dangerously as they glared at the cause of his displeasure. Angrily, the boy rolled onto his back with silken, crimson locks flaring out across the bed on which he rested as he continued to glower, upside-downedly so, at a plant across the room. Situated within a large paneled glass case, was an enormous flower. To any other person the unusual sight would have been shocking to say the least, for it was not everyday that one came across a flower of such behemoth proportions, the size of the bud alone was that of an adult human curled up into a ball. An aggravated sigh rolled from his lungs as it escaped him in a lengthy exhalation of breath.

*What's got you so uptight Red?*

The rich, low voice broke through the deafening silence of the room, or at least of the room in the boy's mind. It was at younger ages that it was normal for children to create imaginary friends to amuse themselves and it seemed quite obscure the fact that the matured boy possessed such. Though most unfortunately, this voice did not belong to that of a imaginary friend or even to an unexpected bout of schizophrenia, this voice belonged to the other soul that was housed within his body. The boy would have gladly laughed at the irony and the impossibility of such if it weren't true. The owner of said soul and voice was instead a cunning and wily kitsune who at one time was revered as a top notch thief.

'You know perfectly well, Youko, what the problem is. Two days, TWO DAYS I have been observing this flower and it has yet to bloom. It just stubbornly refuses to open!'

*Oh... Is that all?* The kitsune asked amused by the human's impatience.

'IS THAT ALL?!!' The youth replied indignantly. It was at times like these that the boy felt he would have no problem strangling his other half... If only he himself weren't choked in the process.

CHAPTER ONE

"O-OH KURAMA!!" Cheered the all too happy voice of Botan, “Koenma needs you right away. He's got another mission for the gang."

Botan, also more widely known as lady death or the grim reaper, smiled exuberantly at the back of a bright red-haired head. Her slightly-too-large grin slipped momentarily as she noticed that the boy in front of her seemed not to have heard her as he continued staring balefully at a plant encased within glass from his place of lying on his back on his bed. She arose from the floor of his room and floated lazily above him, noticing the slightly dazed look in his eyes. 'He must be talking with Youko.' She thought to herself before raising her hand and waving it impatiently back and forth inches from his nose.

"Yoohoo Kuramaaa, Koenma needs you." She repeated in a louder voice, this time sparking a reaction.

Kurama's bright green eyes cleared nearly instantly and it appeared as if he'd been somewhat surprised by the appearance of Botan floating above him. He blinked once then twice before finally his eyes gained more of a focus. He'd been glaring far too long at the plant and speaking with Youko so that he had lost complete track of his surroundings which he didn't do too often, of course the two days of no sleep didn't seem to improve his attention span either.

"I'm sorry Botan, what was that you were saying?" He inquired politely, for that was his nature.

"Koenma wants you for a mission. What about, I'm not quite sure as he didn't really go into the specifics. He just said 'Botan I need Yusuke and the guys here now!' He seemed a little stressed about it really so I have a feeling it'll probably be top priority. So, ready to go?." The female death asked as she glided away and opened a swirling portal before her that would take them to Koenma's office.

Oh how Kurama truly wanted to decline, plus it really didn't help that Youko wasn't inclined to leave their watch of the plant that had angered his human soul counterpart so without much of a cause, yet he found himself rising from his position on the bed and straightening the clothes he wore until all creases that had been the effect of lying down had faded. Sighing once more, he followed Botan through the portal and found himself at the open door of Koenma's office. Walking forwards, he entered the office to find Hiei, Yusuke, and Kuwabara already there.

"Alright Toddler, Kurama's here! What d'you want already? Keiko's gonna kill me if I'm not home soon!" Yusuke's voice rose in annoyance portraying exactly how Kurama felt.

Yusuke Urameshi was tall with light brown eyes. His hair was slicked back with gel and he looked quite similar to the yakuza from nearby where he lived. He was a brash young man but strangely - fiercely loyal. Somewhat shorter than Kurama and Kuwabara himself, he sat leaning back in a chair before the desk at which was seated a toddler with a binky in his mouth that was being sucked on at a furious pace as if the young child was agitated somehow.

"Indeed Koenma what case needs all of us?" Kurama really hadn't meant for his voice to come out as sharp as it had but he was nearing his breaking point of patience and really wanted to get back home to resume his steady overview of the flower. Even though he'd set up a video camera in order to record the flower should it open in his absence he was not too fond of the thought that he'd miss such a momentous occasion.

*Very nice Red, smooth - real smooth.* came Youko's reaction to his temper.

Shock crossed the small face of the baby-like ruler, in fact the look seemed contagious as it spread around the room and even Hiei had raised an inquisitive brow at Kurama's little outburst. Hiei, the cold-blooded killer with a reputation to match, the feared forbidden child, the master swordsman who possessed the black flame dragon and Jagan eye, the slightly-taller-than five foot emotionally constipated demon was indeed intrigued enough... to raise a brow.

Koenma shook his head and cleared his throat before starting, " this is the Shikon no Tama. A jewel of immense power with the ability to grant any single wish, enough plunge this world and all worlds beyond into utter chaos." Sure it sounded impressive but Kurama was still not completely won over even as Koenma pointed to the projection of the jewel on the wall behind him. It simply looked like an overly large pink marble on a chain - not threatening at all. What was so scary about a giant marble?

~Fox, what was that?~ Hiei's voice came cutting through Kurama's internal muttering to Youko how he wished not to be here.

Kurama's eyes flickered to Hiei who was leaning against the wall right beside the door with one foot pressed to it. His gravity defying hair was swept upward in a flame-like shape and had a strange white starburst pattern within the raven black of it. Cinnamon red eyes stared ahead at the picture of the jewel yet he was more interested with the fox's attitude at the moment than the artifact shown to them and the legend that Koenma told about it.

'Nothing...'

*Don't sulk Kurama its unbecoming of you.* Youko chastised

'Very well, is a plant at home. '

~Hn.~ Hiei replied with his customary monosyllable answer.

*But not just any plant!* Youko chimed in excitedly.

'No not just any plant... Supposedly when it blooms - that's IF it blooms, something amazing is supposed to occur. The only problem is that Youko doesn't really know exactly WHAT this amazing occurrence is going to be.'

*Ha! He's just sore cause I won't tell him.*

~Hn.~ Which was more of Hiei's way of asking "You don't know do you fox?".

*I DO TOO KNOW!* Youko proclaimed.

"... And now for the reason I've called you here." Koenma's words drifted to Hiei and Kurama, " Meet the guardian of the Shikon no Tama." The picture displayed changed to a girl in a high school uniform with a small shy smile captured by the photograph. Long raven locks spilled down her back and bangs curled lightly to rest against her brow. Stunning blue eyes seemed to pierce through the camera lens and stare straight at the viewer. There was a kindness in those eyes that was coupled with a streak of inexplicable sadness. The girl, although human, was beautiful and not in the overly done, caked with cosmetics, and false eyelashes way. There was a honest purity to her natural beauty that forced people to look twice whether they wanted to admit to it or not. The four detectives were immobile for a few seconds and Koenma had to chuckle for he too had experienced the same awe that they were now locked in. Kurama's mind went blank and Youko was uncharacteristically silent before he spoke up.

*Now THAT'S a good reason to be pulled away from what we were doing.*

~Hn.~ If Hiei had the ability to roll his eyes through his voice he would have done so, instead he settled for that reply which was actually pretty damn close.

Kurama remained in silence as a light blushed worked its way across the bridge of his nose. He felt his body reacting instantaneously as he shut his eyes before taking a deep breath and opening them once more, this time ready for what awaited him.

*Well that was unexpected...*

~Indeed.~

Hiei had caught the musky scent of the boy's arousal before it faded away. Now he was highly perplexed indeed. The fox had a score of rabid fangirls that were demented and perverse in their pursuit of him and he'd never before batted an eye at them in intrigue but the flash of a picture of some girl that Kurama more than likely did not know sent the boy into carnal enthrallment? It was odd to say the least. Never ever had the kitsune avatar shown any interest for the female gender and for quite some while he had not only Yuusuke and Kuwabara convinced that he was into guys but Hiei as well. It wouldn't have come as a surprising fact if he was for kitsune were known for their.... eclectic choice in lovers, regardless of gender. What was surprising was this sudden spark of attraction that delved deep enough for the boy's body to unwittingly respond.

Kurama could feel the embarrassment begin to rise as if it were some tangible thing attempting to swallow him whole. Embarrassed? Since when did he ever get embarrassed? He was forced to deal with a sex crazed lunatic on a daily basis!

*HEY! I heard that.* Youko's pouting thoughts pulled Shuichi from his musings with a slight chuckle aloud.

The room went oddly silent as once again all eyes turned to him. What was with him today? It must've been the lack of sleep. That HAD to be it. He was acting so far out of character he himself was beginning to wonder if he really was him and not somebody else.

~Fox that has to be the most ridiculous thought you have had in the entirety of all of your thoughts.... And I thought you to be intelligent. It seems I was mistaken.~

Youko bristled at Hiei's biting remark as did Shuuichi. The flame apparition sure did have a way with keeping one's ego fairly small. Kurama felt the corner of his lip twitch in amusement at the Irony. Youko's ego was a good deal off from being called anything near small.

Coughing lightly, Kurama pushed his attention back to the infant sized ruler.

".... is precisely why we need you to find her Yuusuke!" Koenma's little fist beat down onto the paper stacked desktop sending a few of the sheets to scatter themselves across the floor, within his voice resided the strength of conviction.

"Look toddler how are we supposed to find some chick when you can't even give us a clue as to where she might possibly be?!" Yuusuke's face was flushed in frustration - he always did have a short temper.

"Dimwit, she is not just "some chick" she is the reincarnation of a powerful miko as well as the guardian to an even more powerful artifact!" Koenma shouted his mouth flaring wide around his pacifier allowing it to drop to the table top with a wet `SMACK'. The demi-deity sighed in frustration as his short, stubby arm lifted it back up to place it into his mouth again.

Kurama had caught the end of an argument that quite apparently dealt with the girl. Putting two and two together truly wasn't difficult. The girl was the guardian of that dull chunk of rock and apparently had gone missing - THEY the Reikai Tantei were needed to locate and contain the girl. He wanted to sigh - sigh long and loudly - really, really loudly.

Torn between the want to find the girl who had shattered his tight reined self control and scampering off home to continue his vigilance of the flower, Kurama remained in place as he continued to listen dully to the quarrel of the hot-headed detective and their employer.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~

Shadow encased in a warm, isolated sanctuary of security, the young women was curled tightly into a ball of protection. Knees to chest, she remained with eyes sealed shut and her arms clasped about her legs. She did not want to open her eyes, not at all but she knew it would be merely a matter of minutes before she was clear headed and the fogginess of sleep lifted. She just wanted to shut out the world, shut out all thought, and shut out all memory. Of course it never worked that way and reality struck like the blow of a hammer to one's hand.

Images flashed and emotions flickered in her mind's eye. It was like watching a badly recorded home video as the scenes rapidly changed from one to another in her mind's eye. Trying to grab smoke in her hand would have proved more successful than making sense of the distorted images. Screaming appeared to be a good option and the young woman opened her mouth only to have it fill with the coppery taste of blood. She gagged and struggled, fighting against the fiery liquid's noxious flavor. It was vile and she felt the need to retch horribly burn in her throat and lungs.

The silken texture against her skin, once firmly surrounding her, grew steadily lighter in even intervals until she was free of its warmth and comfort as a power radiating from her forced it to yield. It was like a hole had been poked in the bubble around her as the fluid sheathing her body raced downwards, releasing her and allowing her to breathe. She inhaled deeply with slight dissatisfaction, the grotesque taste still coating her tongue and breath.

Stormy eyes ensnared with lightning streaks of arctic blue opened as thick, dark lashes parted to reveal the world around her. The glimmering orbs took in the sight of room and she very nearly shrieked as her suspicion was confirmed - it was blood in her mouth. She dared not to ponder exactly just whose blood it was, only that it was in fact the life giving essence. Heart rate accelerating and breath coming in short and uneven pants, she sat on her throne of gore and flower petal in utter shock.

Kagome could feel the shudders racking her body and mind. She was cold on the inside and cold on the out as the cool air of the room ghosted across bare flesh and the taunting fear of not being able to recall anything that happened to her or who she was very nearly shifted to pure panic. No she wasn't completely void of memory, she knew her name a few other basic things pertaining to her but as of the moment she couldn't seem to grasp the more important things like where was she? What happened after she went into the well house? Why was she in a flower? What was with all this blood?

She knew for certain she should have been appalled by the grime as she raised a slack hand in front of her to look more closely at it. For some reason though, she was not. She'd been covered in worse - in guts and intestines, in saliva and drool, and much more. When this had happened she could not recollect but she was positive that it had taken place. Pushing all thoughts aside, she opted to follow the moment's utmost compulsion - to shower and be clean, to scrub away all evidence of this occurrence ever happening.

Unfurling one long, limber leg it stretched before her to meet the soaked rug on the wooden floor with a very audible `SQUISH'. Nonchalance drifted across her features as her limb's partner mirrored its twin's action. She propelled herself forward with a grace that even she was not aware she possessed and made her way towards the open door on the left of the wall across the room. Her dainty feet were lit aflame as pain gorged itself on her flesh. Shards of glass transferred from the depths of the plush white rug into the heel and soles of her feet. They remained unnoticed as her focus remained unchanged.

Step after step was dragged and the distinct sound of the glass grating across the wooden floor was heard scratching whilst Kagome's feet barely lifted at all. She could feel the blood that was of her own and of the flower's smudge the floor in streaks and she winced. The owner of the room would be upset but she was too tired to care.

`Shower first, worry later.' Was her only thought as she entered the immaculately clean bathroom.

Turning the knob for water, the overhead spigot spouted forth the deliciously scalding water. Stepping beneath the downpour it took her a few moments to begin the laborious task of getting rid of casing of blood. Her hair was disgustingly matted and foul and it would have been easier to simply chop it off but she was relentless in the cleansing of her body and it wasn't long before she was clean once more. She moved onto her feet and painstakingly pulled the glass splinters from them before running a glowing, healing hand of energy across the wounds as the sharp objects cascaded down the drain.

Turning off the water, she left the shower stall. Kagome reached for the nearest towel and draped it around her body, the mirror was fogged over from the heat of the water and the air was muggy as she stepped forth from the bathroom. Taking a second more critical look at the room she'd once come from, she noted the vegetation spread about. Flowers, leaves, and vines littered every possible space available - even the bedside table. She shrugged mentally and left the room through yet another door out into the hall.

Treading as quietly as humanly possible, she made her way to the next door on the right of the one she'd left. Praying there were no occupants in the room, the door swung open on silent hinges and banged against the wall.

`Well there goes the attempt of being quiet.' Came Kagome's sarcastic inner self.

The room was red and black in color. So red… It reminded her of the blood… And fire rat haori…. She quickly shut the door in a hurried fashion. Onto the next door on the other side of the hall she decided as she crossed over to it. Should she choose the one on the left? Or the one on the right? Closing her eyes before finally making her choice, Kagome's hand sought the door's handle and she twisted it open.

Were she not in such a state of confusion and shock Kagome was sure she would be freaking out…. or at least partially sure. It was odd; it felt like part of her was missing. The person she once was, was gone and had completely disappeared. Even queerer was that she didn't care, she really didn't mind at all, in fact she was relieved and dare she say…. Glad?

Eyes growing accustomed to the dark she noted the very comfortable looking bed before her. A black comforter and iridescent golden sheets made her sigh. The colors were soothing and matched the golden walls and black trim of the room. She groggily paced to the bad and fell onto it landing with a contented sigh. She was exhausted and not in the sense of having worked to near death and late hours of the night but exhausted in the sense that life was complicated and tiring and she wanted nothing more to do with it.

Seeking her escape through sleep, Kagome burrowed under the blankets. Pulled up to her chin they were cool against her flesh as she pulled the towel from around her and dropped it onto the floor haphazardly. This was nice, the room did not smell of blood and was tastefully decorated. Eyes fluttering shut she smirked at the last thought of her consciousness.

`I feel like goldilocks.'

Never did it occur to her that for her own tale, there would also be three bears soon to arrive home.
