CHAPTER THREE
“You did it again Yusuke…” The fox avatar said quietly.
The Reikai Tantei were currently lounging in the kitchen of Kurama's house contemplating where their search for the missing miko would begin. Of course this wasn't where Shuuichi or Youko wanted to be at all. Where they wanted to be was up in their room, on their bed, watching their flower but doing so would only prolong the inevitability of this conversation and they'd might as well get it over with now in order to start another uninterrupted watch.
As it was, Kurama was seated at the table with a cup of tea in hand, Kuwabara was seated across from him with his bright hair's Elvis-esque style a shocking contrast to the lightly colored kitchen walls, Yuusuke was leaning with his back against the refrigerator door his upraised eyebrows proof of his confusion at Kurama's words leaving the fox sighing internally, And Hiei - well he'd gone off on his own as soon as they'd returned to the Ningenkai.
“You told Koenma… Keiko.” Kurama replied softly.
Though he wasn't one to beat around the proverbial bush, this was an issue Kurama was never certain of how to broach. Sure Yuusuke had been the one to tell him -Kurama - to tell him - Yuusuke - of when he'd ever made reference to his ex-fiancé and ex-girlfriend. With Yuusuke's eyes locked on his own, the detective nodded his understanding. It had been three months - three months since cruel words were spoken, three months since the couple had split, three months since he'd come to Kurama asking to live with him - and he was still automatically saying that Keiko would “kill him if he didn't get home soon” to Koenma.
The detective quite visibly clenched his jaw and hands at this fact and the kitsune wasn't sure if he'd be able to remain calm this time. In his hazel eyes burned a deep anger but, as always, it was simply shielding the sadness that the boy truly felt. It was then, just as Yuusuke was about to leave to go upstairs to his room to hide away, that Hiei had entered through the kitchen window.
`You realize that the front door is only a few feet from that window and you are allowed to use it.' Shuuichi told the flame apparition.
~Hn.~ Was Hiei's usual response before he spoke.
“There is the smell of blood upstairs.” He said.
Shock glazed over the group giving Hiei the urge to snarl. It was obvious what the tangy smell had been as soon as he'd come inside and he was slightly disturbed that neither the fox nor the foolhardy detective had noticed it. With the orange haired idiot it wasn't as surprising, he was human after all and he senses were highly dulled compared to that of his demon teammates. Turning on his heels, he disappeared upstairs.
Kurama stood nearly immediately after Hiei's words and started for the stairs. Blood? In his house? What had happened? Yuusuke followed suit and was trailed closely by Kuwabara. They were silent as they mounted the steps and even the clumsy oaf that served as the caboose of their man made train seemed to sense the need for it. Kurama's nose had kicked into action as soon as Hiei had told them of blood and he was frustrated that he'd not noticed it before. It was thick in the air with its scent and very obvious now.
Once at the staircase's top, he noted that his door was swung open wide with Hiei's bulk occupying the frame. He led his following friends over and peered past the apparition's shoulder. The sight was that of a macabre massacre and he felt his body seize in utter shock and repulsion of his once pristine room. The flower had been opened, whether forcibly or on its own was hard to determine as the petals seemed to have been pried apart. Of course that wasn't the thing that caught his eye at first. No that had been the shattered glass and blood that spattered the walls and floors. Bloody footprints that were slowly coagulating and drying marred the wooden floor and the rug that had once been ultra white underneath the flower's glass encasement was ruined by the liquid as a puddle of blood had formed around its edges erasing any and all hopes of saving the piece of cloth.
Stepping into the room slowly and carefully he followed the footprints to his bathroom. The shower floor was a mess and the walls had rivulets of water dripping down them. The air was cool and the mirror was fogged only around the edges leading Kurama to the conclusion that it had been at least ten minutes after someone had taken a shower. He only vaguely heard Yuusuke's low whistle or Kuwabara's loud gasp.
Youko was in an uproar, being one who reveled in order and hygiene he strained at the holdings that kept him within their body and under control. He was far beyond pissed and there was no other way about it. Mentally slamming himself against his bonds, Youko fought for supremacy. Kurama could feel his nails digging into his palms as he came to understand the implications of the opened flower. Two wasted days and no amazing sight to behold… Karma truly was a bitch.
~Fox get a hold of yourself, there is still somebody here.~ Hiei cut through the kitsune avatar's internal feud with a single commanding thought.
Kurama shifted around to face his companions as they stared at him, seeking to find out his reaction.
*Where is he!! When I get a hold of him I'm gonna…* Youko's muttering faded off as he thought of all the things he would do to the offender.
`Calm down Youko. Even if I am upset as well we still need to figure out who is in the house and what they are doing here.' Shuuichi chastised his other half.
~Finally showing some sense tonight Fox? Good.~ Hiei's taunt only furthered Youko's distress but the apparition couldn't help the internal smirk that coated his words.
Kurama snorted aloud in a very offended Youko like fashion before glaring at his teammate, “Where is he?”
“Yuusuke's room.” Came Hiei's answer. Hiei shot off, barely beating the kitsune's hand to the door handle. “Do not begin to act like the detective fox.” Was his only warning as he slowly opened the door.
The room was darkened as the lights were off and the black shades pulled tightly shut but that did not deter the straggling bits of moonlight that filtered through the window. The strands of light were quickly obliterated as Kurama pounced upon the light switch and flicked it on. The sight that greeted the two was quite the unexpected one.
The pale skin of a very feminine shoulder was exposed to them from beneath the bed's coverings as well as a very long, very lithe leg. Raven hair hued with a blue sheen spilled forth across the pillow and masked the face of the sleeping person. The woman was most definitely not awake which was proven by the slowed heart rate and deep breathing. Though it did not to seem to be a peaceful unconsciousness, the bed's occupant began to struggle against the sheets that she was twisted within and her breaths became erratic.
Kurama fought the dropping of his jaw but could not stop the way his mouth became dry or how his pants seemingly grew a bit smaller and tighter. Of course it wasn't that they technically grew smaller per se but that something else grew… bigger. Black locks were shaken aside to tell of a pale face and strawberry pink lips. The girls features were somehow familiar and held Shuuichi in a daze. Youko though, was not quite as stunned.
Slipping through his human sides control he pulled forwards from the darkened depths of their mind. He could feel how his blunt nails sharpened into deadly claws, how his hair lengthened and lightened, and how his ears shifted to rest regally high atop his head. He was never one to pass up on an opportune moment and this was most definitely one. He moved smoothly to the bedside to stare down at the sleeper.

Kagome's dreams were plagued by the ever present nightmare that had once been her life. She could see clearly her last moments in the Sengoku period. Clearly see how Shippo was maimed, how Sango's vertebrae was snapped as she fell to the ground after being batted like a baseball from her perch on Kirara's back, how the fire neko was attacked by too many youkai and died fighting valiantly, could clearly see how Kikyo in a last moment of desperation pulled Inuyasha down deep into hell in a lover's embrace, how Miroku after seeing Sango's last breath gave up all hope of happiness and in determination took his other hand and ripped apart the kaazana's already gaping entrance further taking into oblivion not only himself but all the demons around him.
It was enough to drive anyone insane and perhaps she was. For maybe it was in a bout of her insanity that she saw over Naraku's shoulder Sesshomaru who stared forth indifferently from the tree line as she purified the damned hanyou with the little Rin at his side. He watched as her aura enveloped herself and the one that she despised, watched as she left his world in the past no longer a regular being but something much, much more, and watched as her last tears fell to the ground long after she had finally disappeared and the overbearing light of her power dimmed as she blinked away from existence.
No, Kagome's dreams were most assuredly so as far from being comforting as dreams could be. Perhaps it was the terror that they invoked or maybe the disinclination to relive those moments that tore Kagome out of her world of nightmares. Whatever it was, it was not unwelcome… Or so she thought until she opened her eyes to stare blankly at two golden, glowing orbs.
“Inu… Inuyasha?” Her voice was too soft for her liking, too unsure, and far too unstable.
The stunning eyes blinked once before a set of glistening garnet joined them.
“No…” Came a voice far too rich and deep to ever be her beloved hanyou companion's.
As the curtains of sleep fell from her eyes she noted with broken hope that the speaker was indeed telling the truth and who was she to stop the onslaught of her own tears?

OMGAR such a short chapter!! O__Q I'm sorry, I promise to add more to it later! Honest!
Oh me, oh my ^^ REVIEWS!! Thanks you guys, you've made Van chuckle happily.
Now Van has a problem [uh oh], I can either update every few days or so and have short chapters or once a week and have longer chapters. Since Van does not like reading small chapters she is going to post them once a week, she knows how it is to have to stop reading to click a botton then start reading only to stop and reclick the same button. Sadly this means you'll have to wait a bit for each and for that Van is sorry.
