Warning: I am not sticking to the full story line of the Yu-Yu Hakusho manga/anime nor am I staying within the full story line of Inuyasha. As far as Yu-Yu Hakusho is concerned, the basic all of them are detectives is the main thing. Some of the “Black Chapter” facts will be involved, but the worlds are still separate and the detectives are still working for Koenma.
Secret Mate
Chapter 2
Kagome woke from her slumber feeling like she was run over by an eighteen wheeler. Her legs hurt, and her wrists hurt. She moaned as she rolled over to curl around her mate.
When she rolled over to wrap her arms around Kurama she was met with air. Her eyes flashed open and then quickly closed again when the sun coming through an open window momentarily blinded her. She slowly opened them to stare at the empty space next to her, the very empty space where her mate was supposed to be. She glanced over at the pillow next to her. She smiled when she noticed the red rose resting on the fluffy pillow. A small white note rested under it.
She opened the crease in the paper to read the note:
My Love,
I hope to be back as soon as I can. I will see you later. Please take care of yourself. I have left my soul and heart with you. Take care of it for me.
Your Mate
She folded the note to her body and sighed in content. Her mate was always so sweet to her. Well, unless she was being bad, and even then he only punished her…. Kagome blushed at the thought of the `punishments' that she had at one time received. The positions and places he roughly took her was still mind boggling. God, just the thought her him pounding into her hold sheath was enough to make her aroused. She could feel herself become wet, her essence flowing out of her body onto the sheets. She groaned in need before standing. She needed a cold shower now instead of the hot one that she was going to take after the night's lovemaking.
She came out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel ten minutes later. She changed into a flowing sundress that came just below her knees. The color of it was a deep dark green that had small beads and glitter patterns covering it. This was one of my favorite dresses to wear outside. The color was the exact same as Kurama's eyes in his human form, the form that most people saw in everyday.
Kagome applied a little make-up to make her eyes contrast well with the green before she made her way to the kitchen. She quickly ate some food, brushed her teeth, and locked the door on her way out of the house. She needed to go to the market to stock up on groceries and supplies. She hadn't been home in a long time and neither had her mate so she knew that they would need to eat for the little time that they were both going to be home.
On her way to the market she greeted several different people. The sun was beaming down upon everyone in welcome of a beautiful day. The flowers were in bloom, making everything smell like sweet roses.
My favorite scent! Kagome thought in content. Kurama, gosh I love you.
And so Kagome went through the market singing humming songs of love while shopping. If Kagome was paying attention she could have noticed the fond and hopeful looks she received from young men surrounding her. She would also have noticed the deep wisdom in the eyes of the elderly when she passed them by, their eyes were filled with untold wisdom of the love that she was radiating. But Kagome didn't notice. She was far to content to be in a state of bliss and the feeling of overwhelming love to care about the others around her.
Kagome easily made her way through the marketplace with a practiced ease of one who had been shopping and cooking for many years. She seemed to know the item and the price of the good that she wanted to buy before she even put it in a basket. And some of the surrounding crowd would occasionally look at her oddly when she would appear to look closely at a product before laughing as she put it in her cart. This was strange, but not to abnormal to question her outright at her odd behavior. After all, it was very odd seeing a young gorgeous woman laugh spontaneously at two pounds of rice. Very odd indeed.
Kagome quickly finished her shopping with a few bags of groceries in her arms. She walked very easily home even with the added weight of the purchased items. She went home and put away the groceries and then left her home yet again. It was obvious that she did not like to stay indoors for very long.
When she stepped out of her front door for the second time that day she slowly inhaled the air. But is wasn't all that fresh anymore. The many traveling cars on the streets had made the air mucky and unclean, making the scent of the roses completely disappear. She coughed a little in a gut reaction to the smell filling up her lungs.
And this is why I don't smoke. She thought in disapproval. I need to get some clean fresh air. She knew of only one place right now at this time that was available to her, without going to the past or demon world, to get some fresh air. There was a small park filled with a few benches and trees a few blocks down from her home.
To the park it is. I have enough time before I have to make dinner. I think I'll make some teriyaki chicken with some nice rice.
Kagome made her way to the park with a pounce in her step. She couldn't wait to see her secret mate. It was not often that they got to see each other alone. She was normally five hundred years in the past arguing with a half demon, Inuyasha. Naraku had been defeated, but some of the shards had not been found yet. But they group was so close to being almost finished. Which was good because Sango, a demon exterminator, and Miroku, a perverted monk, were to be married in less than two months. And she had promised to see the wedding before permanently living in the modern world. When they heard that she was not going to stay with them in the Feudal Era after the quest was finished they were all stricken with grief. But none of them knew of her secret mate that she had her modern world, none of them did, not even Inuyasha, her best friend or her adopted brother of a year, Sesshomaru.
But of now it does not really matter because her mate was never home either. He had his own missions to accomplish still. Kurama was not only a demon by the name of Yoko Kurama but he was also a famous Spirit Detective. He worked with the other detectives in Spirit World under the command of Prince Koenma, who the leader, Yusuke calls a `toddler'. She does not know what that means though for she has never met any of them. Which was a downside to being a `secret' mate. She didn't get to see her mates friends or job. It could be really annoying at times, but she of all people in this city could understand. She knew that the number of enemies that she had made of the years was gaining higher and higher. She had killed to many demons not to be on a few hit lists in the Feudal Era, and she knew that at least some of those lists still existed in the demon world with some very old demons with some very long memories. She just hoped that they were not made aware of her current presence in the Human World or things could get a little messy. But she also knew that her mate had enemies and allies, just like she did. After all, she knew for a fact that Sesshomaru was still alive and kicking. He was in the Demon World at the moment, scowling at her because she was not there to get her butt kicked by him in yet another sparring match.
In the Feudal Era she is made friends with the Demon Lord of the West and become a couple for about a month. He was into her and she into him, but then she saw him eyeing up some sweet and beyond beautiful demoness with eyes that were like seeing the sunset for the first time. And when she saw the look in his eyes when they first made eye contact, she knew that she had lost him. So Kagome let him go. What choice did she have? He had finally found the one person who had the key to his soul, the person who had the other half of his entire being. She knew that she could not stand in-between them when all things were said and done. And if she was being perfectly honest with herself, she was not all that upset about it. She saw the look and the knowledge that Sesshomaru felt when he found his soul mate. And she hadn't found it with him. And she was so glad that she did let him go because not one week she found her own mate. And God how much she loved that demon. He was her everything. But things worked out between her and Sesshomaru and his soon-to-be-mate. She was extremely nice and friendly. She had a temper too which Kagome thought was very good for Sesshomaru. He needed to have a mate just as passionate and demanding as he was. And they fit together perfectly. And as for her and Sesshomaru they remained friends and then it sort of became a brother sister relationship after that. Which was oddly enough not uncomfortable. They both knew that they would be nothing more than friends when he found his soul mate and she found hers. And as the friendship continued to progress Kagome soon found that he was just as protective of her, but instead of being protective as a significant other should be he was protective like an older brother looking out for his younger sister. And Kagome soon learned to accept this. He even thought her how to use some weapons. She could have a good match with him using swords as long as she was allowed to use her miko powers. She wasn't a good match compared to him when not using her powers. She always lost so badly that he would even laugh at her on occasion when she landed on her butt for the sixteen times in a row. He would and always will be better than her at the sword, but she did take great pride in being better at the bow. Sesshomaru plus bow equals laugh feast. It is so hilarious seeing the mighty demon lord try to so something like string a bow. The first time he had tried it was so funny that Kagome couldn't get off the ground for an hour. He had first broken the spring with a simple pull of it to tie it to the bow. And then he broke the bow with a flick of his wrist. And the best part of this show was the look that he gave it when it did not do as he commanded. He had glared at it for a few minutes before he simply dowsed it with some poison acid from his claws. It was rather funny! He still could not use a bow to save his life, something Kagome loved to rub in at any opportunity.
Kagome was brought out of her memories at her arrival in front of the park. It was so peaceful here. She quickly located her favorite tree to lay under and settled under it with a sigh. If only man had not spent some much time concentrating on making his life easier and simply breath in the fresh air that the trees, grass, and plants provided. Life was so hectic with all of the modern technology that was out in the world now that most did not have the opportunity to simply sit back and enjoy the sun and sky and trees. It was sad, but also a fact of life in the modern age.
It felt so good to be in the grass. She flipped off her sandals that were on her feet and propped up her feet. Kagome felt such peace here. It was the second best place to go in the modern era. The first was always where ever her mate was. Just being in his presence was enough sometimes. Other times she had to be held in his arms to be content, to know that she was safe in his embrace was enough. But since he was busy with his job she would just have to do with the second best place. It's not like she had a choice.
Kagome sat there two hours, slowly becoming more and more relaxed as the warm day went by. But like all things good times something has to come along and ruin it.
A demon the side of a pro-wrestler on steroids appeared out of no where on the other side of the park. Luckily for Kagome, the last person to leave was a little boy and his dog about twenty minutes before. She was the only person in the park when the demon appeared.
Great, just great! Kagome thought. Well, there went that afternoon! The miko calmly stood up from the ground, brushed off some lingering bits of grass off her sundress, and then slipped her sandals back on her feet. She then faced the demon with a hard and unhappy glare.
“Food!” The demon said in obvious delight.
“This is what I get for being me.” Kagome mumbled to herself. Speaking louder so that the demon may be able to hear her Kagome said, “What are you going out of the Demon Realm? Go back where you came from.”
“Food. You will taste good little human.”
“Thank you for calling me skinny, but you need to leave. Demons do not belong here unless given permission. And I know that you don't have it.” Kagome said cheerfully.
The demon said nothing. He charged with his mouth watering and his long fangs ready to chew her to bits.
“You can't say that I didn't warn you.” Kagome finally exclaimed. She raised her hand and a bright ball of pink energy formed in her hand. As soon as the demon was close enough she threw it at him, knocking him down and quickly purifying him to dust.
“This is just great!” Kagome yelled, unaware of her now awed audience. “Just when I thought that I was going to get a day off! But NO! It just had to come to the exact place that I was enjoying myself. This is just my luck. I can't even ask the Gods what I did in my previous life because I ALL READY KNOW. THANK YOU KIKYOU!”
Kagome huffed and then turned to leave the park area. She might as well get herself working on dinner since her peaceful afternoon was completely ruined now. But as she turned to the entrance she was faced with a bewildered audience. One of the men standing in front of her who had orange hair was completely human. But the other two were a little harder to read. One was small, wearing all black. He was definitely a demon, but his aura screamed conflict. It was as if he had two different abilities in his body that did not agree. One was more dominant over the other. It appeared to be ice and fire. Automatically a conversation came to mind that she had once had with her mate. He had been telling her about his teammates.
Hiei. And the orange one is Kuwabara. Which means that the last and middle is Yusuke. Kagome thought. Yusuke was the leader from what she could remember of that conversation. But he had an interesting aura. It seemed like there was more to this man than meets the eye.
“What the hell are you!” Yusuke shouted at her.
Shit! This is so not what I need. This is not good. Nope, not good at all! Kagome thought to herself, panicking.
She decided to play dumb. “What do you mean? I have no idea what you are talking about.”
“Don't play dumb, human.” Hiei growled at her.
“Really, I don't know what you are talking about?” Kagome was definitely stalling. She was waiting for her mate to arrive to get her out of this mess. She knew that he was rarely away from his team.
“How the hell did you do that? Who are you?” Yusuke demanded again.
“My name is Kagome. I—” She didn't get a chance to answer his question with another load of BS. Suddenly, out of no where, a vortex or some hole appeared behind her. Kagome found herself wrapped in chains and being pulled away before the Spirit Detectives could reach her to help.
She struggled to stay in the park, but she could not move, and her powers were not working.
“Yusuke, find…”
And then she was gone, the vortex closed only a second after she passed through.
--
Seconds passed by. None of the detectives could move. Finally Yusuke shouted, “What the fuck just happened?”
“I don't know. But we got to help the nice lady. She needs our help.” Kuwabara said.
“How did she know your name, Detective?” Hiei asked.
“How the fuck should I know. I have never seen that girl in my life.”
“Yeah, and who did she want you to find?” Kuwabara asked.
“How the hell should I know? I told you already! I don't know her!” Yusuke shouted.
“Well, we got to find her. Who knows what could happen to her! We have to tell Koenma.”
“Yeah, yeah. Toddler is not going to be happy with us. Damn.”
--
Kurama walked down the street after paying his mother a quick surprise visit. He had long left his mate sleeping in their bed and had all ready met up with Yusuke, Botan, Kuwabara, and Hiei. All of them had met up with Koenma early in the morning, seeing as he was all ready out of school and the other two were on summer vacation. Both Yusuke and Kuwabara were both going to be seniors this starting school year. He had all ready graduated. He was holding off of college for half a year just in case something came up, like his mate needing his help in the Feudal Era for instance.
The day so far was uneventful. There was nothing that the group would need him for at the time when he left. He promised to be back to help them with anything in an hour. He needed to go say hello to his mother since they were all in the neighborhood. The guys didn't mind at all; they knew that he had his communicator with him if they needed him for an emergency.
He looked up at the clear sky above him and sighed. He could imagine his mate sitting in the park right now with her shoes off and her feet in the grass. He had often brought her to that garden when he knew for a fact that Hiei was somewhere now around and Yusuke was on a date with Keiko, his girlfriend. He didn't worry about Kuwabara catching them because he was probably with Yukina, Hiei's half-sister, or being hit by his older sister.
In the middle of the night when no one was around, he would hold her close to his chest and simply kiss her. Some nights they would end up simply holding each other and other nights they would simply talk about anything and everything. But other times they ended up making out. Those nights they usually ended up naked in their house. Kurama chuckled a little to himself as his arousal was spiking. He could remember this one time when he could make it to their bedroom to have her. He had placed her on the living room floor as soon as he stepped in the door. He could remember her panting him to fuck her until she couldn't walk. He had placed her on her hands and knees and did just as she wanted. The next morning he woke with a carpet to deep clean and a mate who could not walk. God, it felt even better to take her in the bath tub after she had woke. The tub was meant to sooth her muscles, but he become painfully aroused when she had moaned at the feeling of the hot water on the aching muscles. She didn't have time to concentrate on the water enough because he had quickly entered her tight passage.
Kurama mentally moaned. The mental images of those times were making him want to find her and fuck her until she lost all feeling in her legs. He was so glad that Kagome could keep up with his kitsune sexual needs.
His communicator went off. And Kurama was a little happy that it was. It brought his mind off of more pleasurable thoughts that he had no business thinking when he was about to go back on duty. He would be seeing his mate in a few hours anyway. He would just have to settle himself down until then, and more likely after dinner as well. Kagome was a great cook, even though she says that he was just as good if not better. He chuckled a little at the thought and answered his communicator.
It was Botan. She was in a state of panic. “Oh, thank gosh I got a hold of you Kurama. You need to come to Koenma's office as soon and as quickly as you can!”
“What is wrong?” he asked.
“A woman has been kidnapped.”
“Botan, that is usually not something that is our—”
“It was a young woman with powers. And it happened right in front of Yusuke and the rest of the team.”
Kurama frowned. “I'll be there in four minutes.”
--
“How could you let something like this happen, Yusuke?” Koenma yelled at Yusuke.
Kurama walked into Koenma's office to see Koenma yelling at Yusuke. Koenma himself was red in the face and standing up in his chair.
“I didn't let this happy, Toddler. It happened before even Hiei would manage to get her away from the chairs. And she didn't even use her power to get free. She just yelled my name to find something. She then disappeared and the portal closed.”
“What is going on?” Kurama asked Hiei, who was leaning against a wall.
“A girl was taken right in front of their noses.” Koenma answered, pointing at Yusuke in fury. “But what is more important is the fact that she had a strange power that she used right before she was taken.”
“What kind of power?”
“I don't know, but it was really strong. It made me get the willies.” Kuwabara said with a shutter.
“It was purification. A power only held by a miko. And this was one was strong. She has had training.” Hiei stated.
“But that is impossible. The last known miko to have that kind of power disappeared almost five hundred years ago.”
Kurama's stomach lurched. This was beginning to sound very familiar. Yoko started to stir in distress.
“She was obviously trained in combat by someone. She even knew the detectives name.”
Kurama looked at Yusuke in question. “What happened? All the details.”
“We felt a demonic presence in the area of where we were walking. We went to go check it out. And a demon was about to attack a demon. But she turned him into dust before I could even lift my finger. And then she started to rant about a `one day off' or something like that. She then noticed us and started to act dumb. And damn, for someone who can act dumb she sure was smockin'! You should of seen this girl Kurama. She was HOT! Damn, if I didn't have…”
Botan smacked him across the head. “Ouch! What was that for?”
“That was for being a pervert. She more than likely is seeing someone and you are dating Keiko.” Botan said, sticking up for Yusuke's girlfriend who was not present.
“Well, it's the truth. But anyway, out of no where a portal opens and chains appear around her and she is dragged through. But before she left she screamed for me to find something. I don't know who she knew my name `cause I have never met the girl in my life.” Yusuke said, finishing his tale.
Kurama nodded. “Where did you find the demon?”
“Oh, a park a few blocks from where you said you got a house. By the way, when can we see this new home of yours. Maybe we… Kurama? You okay?”
Kurama was not okay. As soon as Yusuke had said the word park he had stiffened and his powers were going out of control. Yoko was howling in anguish.
“What did she look like?” Kurama asked in a icy voice.
“Uh, blue eyes, long black hair, emerald green sundress, really hot body. And she was in shape too! She didn't have any…”
Yusuke couldn't finish. The room was completely overtaken by the power flowing out of Kurama. His hair was starting to faze into a color of pure silvery white. Ears started to show on the top of his head. His clothes started to mix between what he was wearing and the white outfit that Yoko Kurama wore when in his human form.
“Fox, control yourself.” Hiei commanded.
“Kurama, what are you doing?” Koenma asked, beginning to look nervous.
“What the fuck? Kurama, what's going on?” Yusuke swore.
The doors to Koenma's office slammed in and George, one of Koenma's assistants, bolted in. Kurama got Yoko under control as soon as the first words out of George's mouth were spoken.
“Lord Koenma, I have a ransom demand for the girl!” He was holding a cassette tape.
The tape was shoved into the video player and all that watched were transfixed on the screen. Well, Hiei could care less. He didn't give a crap about some miko how could kill them all.
The tape played for a few moments only showing a black screen. And then a picture appeared. It was in a dungeon. The kidnapped miko sat in a locked cell, chains circling her body. A large bruise had already formed on her cheekbone from where she had been punched unconscious. Several more black and blue bruises were beginning to appear on her exposed arms. It seemed like she had been dropped on the ground with a slam a few times before her kidnappers eventually sat her back up, more than likely unconscious by this time.
And then a voice was heard. “Yoko, I have the miko. I am going to give you eight hours to rescue her and defeat me before I have her executed. But you had better hurry. She has a mouth on her. I might not be able to prevent myself from shutting her up when she wakes soon. You now have seven hours and fifty five minutes. The clock is ticking.”
The screen went blank.
Everyone turned to look at the furious Kurama. His eyes blazed in fury and his hands were clenched so tightly that anyone could see the bones underneath the dead white skin. No one said a word. Finally after an awkward silence Yusuke finally could not stand it anymore.
“Kurama, who is this girl?”
“Her name is Kagome Higurashi. She is the protector of the Shikon No Tama.”
Koenma, Botan, and Hiei gasped.
“What the hell is that?” Yusuke asked.
“The Jewel of Four Souls!” Koenma exclaimed. “How on earth did she manage to…to…become the protector of the Jewel?”
Kurama ignored Koenma and answered Yusuke's question. But his normally cheerful voice was overshadowed by the icy hard voice of Yoko Kurama. “The Shikon No Tama is a powerful artifact that has the ability to grant one wish. But if you possess the Jewel or any kind of fragment of the Jewel the power of the holder will grow to immeasurable heights.”
“Yes, and the Jewel is also protected by a miko. They are humans who have the ability to purify anything and that mainly means demons. The last known person to have protected the Jewel was a priestess named Kikyou.”
“Hey! That was the name that the girl shouted out before she left. She said that the Gods were punishing her for her previous life. And she said that name.”
“Then she must believe that she is the reincarnation of the priestess, Kikyou.”
Kurama chuckled, finally sounding like himself. “Yes, she is the reincarnation of that dead thing, but do not let her hear you say that. It might be the last thing you do.”
“What do you mean?” Kuwabara asked.
“How do you know this miko, fox?” Hiei coldly asked.
Kurama could feel Yoko demanding to come out. He kept pushing against the barriers that he had up to maintain this form and be the one in control. But he was more persistent than normal. Usually, the only time that Yoko wanted out now was when he and Kagome were alone. He didn't have any interest outside of their mate, well not in the Human World. In the Demon World that would be a different story, but right now he was fighting for control like never before.
Kurama took a deep breath to calm him, but it did not work. Yoko forced himself out and he became the dominant soul in control. His human form appeared now instead of the usual red haired human.
“What the hell?” Yusuke cried out, backing up.
“She is our mate.” He answered Hiei in a cold tone. He glared at Hiei, challenging him to disapprove of this fact.
“SHE IS YOU'RE WHAT?” Koenma shouted. The entire castle shook.

Note: Okay, I didn't get a lot of votes for me to continue this story. But I am sick and at my computer. So I thought of a solution to this problem. I wanted to write the next chapter because I can not take a nap because my thoughts won't stop going to this one-shot. So I have decided to continue, but it will only be a five or six chapter story. So I hope that this satisfies everyone.
