Chapter 4: Bodyguards
“Uh…”
The girl now referred to as Botan smiled sheepishly. “Oh I'm sorry. I guess it's kind of odd to find someone floating in the air. But don't worry I won't hurt you. I was sent by my boss to bring you to see him. It's about you guarding the Shikon no Tama. We want to be sure that you are fit to protect it, and offer our help in protecting you and your family.”
Kagome thought about her proposition. It would make her job easier, and they could protect her family when she wasn't around. But she was still wary.
Botan must have sensed her hesitation for she smiled and said: “You may bring any weapon you like, if that will make you feel safer.” Botan eyed the sword at her hip.
Kagome smirked. “I wouldn't need a weapon even if you tried something.” She had never considered herself cocky, but she liked it. “But since I always carry my sword, it will stay with me. And Kuro, too.” The cat demon meowed in agreement.
Botan nodded, she didn't seem to have a problem with that. In fact it seemed as if she had expected her to take her sword. “Come on then.” She waved her hand and a portal appeared. She floated gracefully through it.
Kagome hesitated, her past experiences with portals left her with an odd fear of them. Then shrugging, she fearlessly jumped through it. Bracing herself for an impact, she instead was greeted by her feet lightly touching the ground. She opened one eye to survey her new surroundings, then the other one. She appeared to be in an office of some sort. There was a desk, a sliding chair, filing cabinets, and other office supplies.
“Ah yes, you must be Ms. Higurashi.” A voice said from out of nowhere.
The alarmed priestess looked around wildly, and Kuro growled. “Who said that?” The sliding chair behind the desk turned to her. She gasped.
“Hello, my name is Koenma, the prince of Spirit World.”
Kagome eyebrow twitched. There sat a toddler, or what appeared to be a toddler. “You sure you're qualified?”
He nearly fell out of his chair. He looked offended. “Because we are just meeting, I'll forgive that rude comment.” He puffed out his chest. “I'll have you know that I am over 500 years old!”
He seemed to think that this would impress her, but Kagome was around demons that were really old all the time. When he realized that she didn't get impressed that easily he got grumpy.
“Well as Botan told you, I wish to test your power level, then take the appropriate action to help you in your duty to the jewel.” He reached in his desk and removed a strange device. “This is a power detector; this will allow me to make an accurate measure of your power.” He pushed a button and put one end of the long pole against her forehead. The device `dinged' as the detector measured her energy. “Wow, you're up to 10,000 already. You already surpassed—” He paused his eyes widening. “20, 30, 40….70,000!” It went up and up and up. Then the poor device couldn't take the strain of her spiritual energy. It snapped in half.
“Uh…is that good?” Kagome asked moving away from the smoking device.
Koenma stared at her open-mouthed. “A-are you—whoa…” He trailed off too surprised to say much. Finally he seemed to have regained his composer. “Even still, I would like to assign a team to help you. My very best spirit detectives. Botan!”
The blue-haired, grim reaper appeared. “You bellowed, sir?”
“Yeah, get Yusuke and the others and bring them here.” The prince commanded. He then turned back to her. “I'll get one of the ogres to take you to our best room, to relax in.” He pushed a button on his desk. A few seconds later, a blue ogre slid in the room, he looked to be out of breath.
“Yes, sir?” He said, while panting.
“You're late.” Koenma snapped. “Take Ms. Higurashi to my personal living quarters; wait on her hand and foot. If she needs anything you are to get it or do it. Got it?”
The ogre gulped. “Yes sir, of course sir!” He beckoned to Kagome to follow and lead her out of the room.
They passed through a large room; it appeared to be an office of the Spirit World. Ogres of all colors ran around, filing papers, writing reports. They all somehow knew exactly what to do, even in the chaos. Kagome's head flew around as she took in all the sights, but her eyes, they remained the same. Unchanging, emotionless. No one bothered her as she passed, that was how she liked it.
“In here, miss.” They had stopped at a door. The ogre opened it and bowed her in. The room seemed to be a living room. There were nice looking couches and armchairs, tables with tons of magazines. And then there was the bar. Kagome smiled evilly. The bar had all kinds of drinks, both alcoholic and not. “Can I have something to drink?”
The ogre nodded. “Let me…” He went behind the bar. “Anything you want, you got it.”
She grinned once more. Maybe she would like it here.

Koenma paced nervously back and forth in his office. He had the most powerful priestess the world had ever seen in his room. It was risky; she could destroy everything, if she wanted to. But luckily Kagome didn't seem to be that sort of person.
A portal appeared and out came his spirit detectives. “What do you want toddler? Unlike you we do have lives!”
Koenma sighed. Some things never changed. “What I want is to inform you of your new assignment.” The prince turned his chair around and grabbed a remote. “You will be bodyguards to this young girl, Kagome Higuraishi,” he pushed a button and a picture appeared. “and her family.”
“But why is she important?” Kurama asked.
“Kagome is the guardian of the Shikon no Tama, or the Jewel of Four Souls. She is one of the last miko alive today.” The prince said. “She is the most powerful miko that has ever lived and—”
“What's a miko?” Kuwabara asked.
“Do you now anything?” Hiei asked. “Idiot.”
Kuwabara growled. “What did you say shrimp?” Kuwabara lunged at the fire apparition.
“STOP!” Koenma yelled. They all froze. “Do you realize how serious this is? The fate of not just the human world is at stake, but all three worlds!”
“Whoa, calm down.” Yusuke said. He was worried, Koenma always did act serious about everything but now…Koenma looked scared. He changed the subject, “Sooo, what is a miko?”
“A miko, or priestess, is a woman who has spiritual powers. This power allows her to purify demons on contact.” Kurama answered, taking the pressure off Koenma for a moment. “But I thought that all of the priestesses were killed off by demons hundreds of years ago…”
“Most were. But she managed to escape the slaughter. She has enough pressure on her while guarding the jewel, so she needs help protecting her family from demons that might try to use them to get to her.”
“So let's go then!” Yusuke said, trying to release some of the tension in the room. “Where does she live?”
Koenma pushed a button on his desk and spoke into the intercom system. “Ogre bring her in.” He sat back. “I'll let Ms. Higuraishi walk you to her house.”
“She's here?” Kuwabara asked, a dreamy look on his face. “She's hot…”
The door opened and an ogre led a young woman in. She was truly `hot' as Kuwabara put it. With raven colored hair, blue eyes, and curves to die for. The only thing that set her apart from normal girls was the sword strapped to her hip, and the two-tailed fire cat demon perched on her shoulder. “So these are your `very best spirit detectives', huh?”
She eyed them, feeling their power levels and judging their skills.
Kurama walked forward, extending his hand. “Hello, nice to meet you. My name is Suuichi Minamoto, but you may call me Kurama.”
Kagome took his hand. “A spirit fox, eh? Well, nice to meet you both. I am Kagome Higuraishi.” Ignoring the surprised look on his face she moved on.
“Yusuke Urameshi.” She once more shook hands, this time with a guy with slicked back black hair. He appeared to be a tough guy, so did his friend.
“I am the great and powerful Kazuma Kuwabara!” A tall red head said. He wasn't the cutest thing in the world, but he had a kind heart. “Will you go out with me?”
Kagome was suddenly reminded of the perverted monk Miroku. “Sorry, I don't know you that well.”
Kuwabara slumped in disappointment, while Yusuke howled in laughter. “Well that's one nice way to tell a guy `no'.”
Kagome locked eyes with the forth member of their group. He seemed to have no intention of introducing himself.
“That's Hiei, he's not much of a talker.” Yusuke informed her.
Kagome nodded then turned to leave. “Follow me.” She then walked through the portal to her house. Once she got there she turned to make sure that her four new acquaintances were behind her.
“This shrine is very old, and has been in my family for several generations. That huge tree over there, called the Goshinboku, is well over 550 years old, and there are rumors that it is much older.” Kagome said, as if she was giving a tour. She was only telling them half of the story but she really didn't want to tell them more than she needed to. “I live here with my mother, grandfather and little brother, that's who you'll be guarding.”
A young boy ran out of the house and rammed himself into Kagome. “Hey sis, who are they?”
“Souta, these are people who are going to be helping me keep you, and mom, and gramps safe, okay?”
“Okay.” Souta was wary of them. He didn't trust anyone with his sister right now, especially after what Inuyasha did to her. He couldn't believe that his hero could have hurt Kagome so badly, but here was the proof. A broken, emotionless sister. “Mom and gramps are out. They'll be back later.”
His sister nodded then led the four guys behind her in to the house.

A malicious smile graced his lips. He had found her, after all these years. She had always smelled human to him, but then how could she have survived for 500 years? That was the question that he wanted answers to. And he would get them.
He turned to the wench under his rule. She was his slave, nothing more. She had been for 500 years, and would continue to, even though she fought against him. Time and time again, she had defiled his orders and worked with his enemies, just to get a chance to take him down and earn her freedom.
His red eyes shined with delight as he felt the mix of emotions that ran off her. Fear mostly, but deep down in her own red eyes, there was hate, and betrayal. She would at any chance she got, at any second, go against him. That's what made her more enjoyable. He liked to see her suffer.
“Keep an eye on the priestess. Report to me anyone who has contact with her, and where she goes.” He commanded.
“Yes, master.” She turned and exited his room, her body stiffened, as if, at any moment he might turn around and attack her. She hated having her back to him. Walking down the long corridors of his large estate, her mission was interrupted by a young girl who walked out of a door to join her.
“Kagura.” The girl said. She was dressed completely in white, even with white hair. The only thing that stood out was her cold, black eyes, and the mirror clutched in her hands.
“Don't `Kagura' me!” She snapped, not stopping to acknowledge the girl before her.
“You can't seriously be thinking of asking them for help!” Kanna said, trying to convince her friend to change her mind. “They won't help you, they'll kill you!”
“Maybe.” Kagura admitted. “Maybe not.”
Kanna stared after her long time friend, she really didn't want anything to happen to her, and yet, at the same time, she wished she would succeed and they could finally have their freedom.
Kagura had made it outside. Her red eyes were so unlike those of her captor, they shown with a newly revived hope. Pulling her trusty feather out of her hair, the wind apparition took off. She was flying freely on her feather, off to spy on the priestess, just as he had asked. But she had other ideas about why she was going. She would ask the priestess for help. And maybe, just maybe, together, they could put an end to Naraku's reign.

“You're a forbidden child!”
Hiei visibly tensed and put his hand on his sword. More than one priestess had come after him in the past, just for him being what he was. “Onna, don't presume to know anything about me, it might get you killed.”
Kagome smiled. “Well if it was going to get me killed, it already would have, now wouldn't it?” She remembered how much her mouth had gotten her in trouble in the Feudal Era.
