33 HOURS
The Second Hour

Kagome continued to glare up at the demon with a loathing contempt in her eyes. There was thunder roaring somewhere off in the distance but it was easy to tell that there was a storm approaching, however fast it may arrive. Kagome; however, only had one thing on her mind, and that was getting out of the situation she had been placed in. Whether it was from Kagura, or Byakuya, any of the other minions he had created, or even Naraku himself.

“What do you want, Kagura?” Kagome gagged from behind the cloth in her mouth.

Kagura smirked and found no harm in removing the cloth from the girl's mouth so the two could actually have some form of conversation. She bent on one knee and reached behind Kagome's head and sliced the cloth with a fingernail and Kagome reluctantly spat it out of her mouth, along with saliva that had the foul taste of blood and she smacked and licked her lips in hopes of getting rid of some of the dryness so she could actually speak.

“What do you want?” Kagome argued again, her voice quivering in pitch but her eye contact never leaving Kagura's. “Were you sent to watch me? Talk to me? Kill me??”

“Shut up, stupid girl,” Kagura finally said staring at the sky, showing absolutely no interest in what Kagome had said, “I am not here to kill you.”

“Then what could you possibly want? Why am I here? Where are Inuyasha and the others? What is going -”

Kagura angrily sent a shockwave of wind at Kagome in frustration of all her questions. “Enough questions. I am here to talk to you, Priestess. I am not here to answer all your bothersome questions.”

“Then talk,” Kagome said bluntly, eyeing the demon.

Kagura continued staring at the sky and Kagome had a weird sense about Kagura. She especially found it strange how Kagura had little of Naraku's aura about her. Was it possible that he finally set her free? Kagome stared at her in wonder and of all things she could be doing to Kagome, such as killing her, what could be so important that she would possibly want to talk to Kagome about?

“Naraku has your friends captive in a barrier by his castle not too far from here. If you do not give him the shards that you have in your possession, he will kill them come dawn.”

What?? Her mind screamed. No, this can't be happening. This can't be happening! If I give Naraku the shards, he'll use the power of the Shikon no Tama for evil, evil things! But…Inuyasha…he can't die…he just can't!

“You're quiet,” Kagura said, “why don't you speak?”

“I'm thinking,” Kagome spat, but followed up by saying, “Why did he send you? He's not good enough to come and take them for himself? What's the matter, is he afraid that he won't be able to get them from a human girl? Is that it?”

Kagura leered at Kagome and took a step towards her pointing a domineering finger at her, “You listen to me, priestess. I may no longer be of his essence, but there is no way a child priestess can talk about Naraku in such a tone!”

Kagome rolled her eyes but stared up at her with a hateful vengeance, “I don't care about you, or Naraku, or anyone but my friends! Where are they? Inuyasha! Miroku! San -”

Kagome's screaming of her friends names was quickly stopped when Kagura instantly stuck another piece of cloth fully in her mouth, almost making her gag. The vibration of Kagome's screaming reverberated against the everlasting, pale blackness of the night. Even the beauty of the stars were hidden on this occasion, there was nothing beautiful in the world when it came to Naraku.

“What have you done!?” Kagura yelled.

I should not have taken off the garment, Naraku surely heard her cry. What shall he do if he knows what I have done? I am consulting with the vile priestess of whom he detests! Oh, if he finds out, I will be in trouble…Wait, no trouble! I am free! What could Naraku possibly do to me!? I am free!

Kagome began screaming with intensity that even Kagura found frightening. She may have been gagged and bound, but the gurgle-like growling that the girl was producing made Kagura flee into the night. Little to anyone's knowledge that Kagura would be soon-after destroyed by Naraku for revealing his whereabouts to Kagome and for disobeying and betraying him when Kagura had had the chance. Besides, who would have even noticed a difference in the world without her?

MEANWHILE
[..+..]

“How long have we been in here?”

“It feels like it's been hours…”

“Days…”

“Will you two shut up?? I'm trying to think!”

Miroku had convinced a worried Sango to try and relax and not worry about Kohaku, and soon-after she had fallen asleep; a watchful Miroku being sure to look after her and make sure that even though they were sealed inside the demonic barrier that nothing happened to her. Out of boredom, Miroku and Shippou had decided to play mind games in attempt to pass by the boredom, for though they tried (Inuyasha doing most of the trying with his Tetsusaiga) there was nothing they could do but wait until they were let out of the barrier. However, boredom slowly and easily crept up on Shippou, and shortly Miroku.

“What's there to think about Inuyasha? If hacking at the barrier won't work what do you expect us to be able to do but sit and wait?” Miroku tried to reason.

“Maybe I should use my wind scar…” Inuyasha thought allowed, ignoring Miroku.

“Don't you have any idea what could happen??” Shippou piped up fearfully.

“Indeed!” Miroku added, “It would surely rebound and come at us all! That's not wise, Inuyasha. Just sit and wait.”

“How can I just sit and wait when Kagome's out there by herself and I can't be there to protect her? At least I'm trying, with no thanks to you bums! Shippou can barely use his fox magic, Miroku…well, you're just an idiot, and Sango's sleeping! Much help you three are!”

“Well, what would you like me to do,” Miroku argued back, “use my wind tunnel?”

Inuyasha paused in thought for a moment, “Well it's worth a go…”

“Yeah, right!” Shippou intervened, “and have that rebound and suck us in? I don't think so, Inuyasha!”

“Seriously, Inuyasha. Just sit and wait.”

Inuyasha mumbled something under his breath in anger and began to pace the ground before irritably sitting down cross-legged and resting his hands in the sleeves of his kimono. The outside sky was as dark as ebony and it was barely impossible to see any of the surrounding area except for maybe five feet surrounding the barrier. Inuyasha glowered at the scenery and knew that the restlessness he felt inside would have been eased if Kagome had been there. There was always something about her presence that made him relaxed and content. As he agitatedly sat there for however long he had, his mind began to wander all over the place: he thought of Kagome and how she had first came to the Feudal Era and how it doesn't even seem to have been three years since he had first met her. He thought about what he was going to do when he got his hands on Naraku and how much he would love just to take his Tetsusaiga and thrust it through Naraku's midsection. Also, Inuyasha thought of Kikyo and how after being reincarnated once again and kept alive by stealing souls, she had been destroyed by Naraku once again. There was a part of him that ached miserably for her; part of him missing her, part of him pitying her, and there was no denying that even at times when he gazed upon the face of Kagome, he sometimes felt he saw Kikyo standing there looking back at him. While he thought of how Naraku had stolen his old beloved from him, he began to grow angrier. There was no way in Hell he was going to allow Naraku to steal Kagome from him the way he had Kikyo. But there was a part of Inuyasha's heart that knew that if he were to lose Kagome, he would feel a deeper loss than he had Kikyo. For Kikyo was only part of his life; whereas Kagome is his life.

“Inuyasha?”

Inuyasha didn't acknowledge the fact that he was being spoken to and only let out a, “Hm?”

“Are we going to die?”

Inuyasha turned his head to look at the kitsune and smirked a little and patted his knee calling Shippou over. The kit came diligently and sat in front of Inuyasha, staring up at him with the same green eyes he had been for what had felt like a lifetime.

“Are we going to die, Inuyasha?” he asked again.

Inuyasha sighed, rubbed his neck and looked down at Shippou, “No,” he said, “we're not going to die.”

“Well, it's just `cause I've been thinking,” the kit replied heedlessly, “We've always been battling demons in hopes of defeating Naraku, but now that we're here to defeat Naraku…we're trapped in this barrier! And now I'm just starting to wonder if we even have the slightest chance of beating him…”

Inuyasha didn't know what to say, and though he was frustrated, angry, tired, and hopelessly missing Kagome, all he said was, “Just keep your head up, Shippou.”

Shippou looked at him and raised a quizzical brow, “Huh?”

“All I'm saying is think positive. All this time we've been looking for Naraku and now that we're this close to him you can't just go all negative and not think we're gonna beat him. We will! There's no way in hell I'm letting a stupid demon like Naraku win. You can count on that.”

“But what about me? I'll just get in the way…”

“Just do your best,” Miroku chirped in, “we couldn't ask more of you than just to try your best.”

“That doesn't mean I'm not scared…” Shippou said sorrowfully.

“You can be scared,” Miroku said. “Even Inuyasha's scared.”

“What? No, I'm not!”

“You are too, Inuyasha. Don't lie to us.”

“I'm not scared, Monk! And that's a fact!”

“Sure, sure,” Miroku said waving away Inuyasha's surety with his hand in a comical fashion.

“I'm still afraid I'll die,” Shippou claimed hugging his knees.

“You don't have to worry about death while I'm around,” Inuyasha said, patting the kit on the head supportively, “I won't let Naraku or any demon lay a claw on you.”

And it was at that exact moment when Inuyasha's ears picked up a scream from not too far off in the northern distance. It was a cry out for help, and it sounded like his name. And it sounded like Kagome.
