Chapter 1 – Every new beginning…. comes from some other beginning’s end.
Regaining consciousness, Kagome felt the rather large bump on her head, and realized she must have been struck by one of the flying stones. Staggering back to her feet, she stared at what remained of the well…. how could this have happened?

~One Month Earlier~
“Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday Kagome, Happy Birthday to you...”
Kagome blew out the two candles on her cake that were shaped in the numbers 1 and 8, but to her this was more than just a birthday, it was also an anniversary; it marked exactly 3 years since the day she first met Inuyasha. Our hanyou hadn’t come along for her birthday party, grumping about how he didn’t see why acknowledging the day of your birth was so important, but even though it hurt Kagome a little that he didn’t seem to understand how significant this day truly was to her, she also felt a little bad for Inuyasha, realizing he must not even know his birthday. Maybe that was why he acted so cold…. he was jealous. After a few hours of celebrating, Kagome was actually glad he didn’t attend. The house was full of her school friends, friends she didn’t really feel like having to explain about, and apologize for, Inuyasha the entire evening.
Back on the other side of the well, the gang was planning a little surprise of their own.
Though back in the feudal era girls came of age much younger than 18, she had explained to them that in her time, 18 was the special age at which a child was finally considered a full adult. Sango and Miroku both had a hard time believing that her world still considered her a child. Inuyasha had just “Feh”ed at the whole thing and told her she’d better hurry back. But in truth, he, too, was planning something special. As she swung her feet over the edge of the well, preparing to depart, she yelled back at Inuyasha, that he should at least be happy in the thought that all of her tests would come to an end in a few months, as this was her last school year.
“Bout time!” he spat, and she was gone.
The last of her friends excused themselves for the night, thanking her for a wonderful party. Kagome thanked them in return for coming, and for all of the gifts, then right after shutting the door, proceeded to plop herself on the couch, utterly full of cake.
“I never want to see another piece of cake ever again!” she cried, holding her aching belly, perhaps she did over due it a bit.
What she needed now, was a nice, long, hot bath. One in which she was absolutely certain would not be interrupted by any lecherous monks or hanyou. Well, no lecherous monks anyway, still hopeful in the back of her mind that Inuyasha would show up.
Careful what you wish for.
After a relaxing soak, Kagome retired to her room, clad in a loosely wrapped bath towel.
“Oi, Kagome! Took you long enough!”
“Inu-yasha!” she started to say in recognition, then in a mix of embarrassment and anger at her vulnerable position. “You hentai! Get out!” She threw a book at him, which missed, but caused her to drop her towel. “Ahhhhh! Don’t look!!!!!”
“Keh, why would I want to?” I’ll tell you why, cause you’re beautiful he thought, while obeying the shrieked command, turning around with his eyes shut. This wasn’t the best way to start the conversation he had in mind.
At least one glimmer of good luck seemed to bestow itself upon our hanyou, in the fact that no one else had apparently heard Kagome’s cries, as Sota had a movie blaring very loudly downstairs.
Inuyasha’s ears twitched at the sounds of Kagome getting dressed, and after what seemed like an eternity, they heard her voice saying “all clear” indicating he could now turn around. There she was, wearing a pair of printed pajama bottoms, and a white tank top, wet hair slicked straight back.
“I’m… I’m sorry I scared you.” Inuyasha choked out.
Was he feeling okay? He’d just apologized to Kagome, and without even arguing first. After a moment of pondering, she decided it must have been a birthday present; he’d never do that again.
“That’s okay, you just startled me really, but I’m actually glad you’re here.”
“You are?”
“Yeah, I thought you weren’t gonna bother.”
“Bother with what?”
“You know! My birthday party?”
“Keh, I thought I saw all your friends leave.”
“You were outside watching?”
“Uh... “
“It’s okay, I get it. The place was a bit crowded, and noisy, and we’d have had to have spent hours explaining away your white hair and yellow eyes.”
“And dog ears.” He added, amazed by the fact that Kagome, for once, seemed to understand his point of view about her world.
“Oh yeah, how could I forget those cute ears!”
As she leaned in to tweak one of them, she was surprised when Inuyasha didn’t turn away, instead just standing there, crinkling his nose a bit, but letting her rub his ears.
This must be another present she thought. Better not get used to this.
Noticing that he was starting to clinch his fists a little, she decided to poke fun, smirking “What, does it tickle?” But was taken aback by his response.
“Actually, it…..it’s kind of…..arousing.” he managed to chock out in a whisper, while blushing profusely.
“What?” She shrieked, immediately ceasing her actions, blushing even darker than he had. “Why didn’t you tell me before?” she demanded, feeling a mix of anger and embarrassment akin to when he first caught her in her bath towel.
“Because then you wouldn’t want to do it.” He stated matter-of-factly, but with a smirk on his face.
Oh I wouldn’t would I? She thought to herself, lost in a daydream of a time when they might actually be together. On the surface, her only response had been a darkening blush, which didn’t go unnoticed.
“Inuyasha........” she began, but was interrupted by an obviously nervous hanyou who suddenly blurted out “Uhh…..happy birthday, by the way.”
“Huh? Oh yeah, thanks…..”
Sitting down on the edge of her bed, he patted the spot next to him, asking her to join him. She was a little confused at first, but promptly responded, sitting down right next to him. Reaching into his haori, he pulled out a beaded necklace. Not a bulky thing like his rosary, but a delicate little necklace, with a larger round white bead as the center stone, that Kagome thought for a moment she saw writing on, but Inuyasha quickly placed it in her hand, closing her fingers around it. She wasn’t meant to read it yet...
“And happy anniversary.” He said.
“Oh Inuyasha!” She gleamed as she started to open her fingers to look at her gift, until Inuyasha suddenly placed his hand atop hers.
“Kagome…..there’s something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about, something that’s been on my mind lately.”
“Inuyasha?”
“Kagome, we’ve had a third confirmation of the rumor as to the location of that whelp Akago, so, if we do find him in that village, and slay him, Naraku’s heart, then our mission will be pretty much over.”
Kagome just listened intently, she hadn’t heard Inuyasha with this serious of a tone in his voice in, in, she couldn’t remember when. Yes she could, when he had chosen to go to hell with Kikyo. Was that where this conversation was headed? Was the necklace supposed to be some sort of memento? Inuyasha could see questions overflowing the rim of Kagome’s eyes, but at least they weren’t joined with tears, yet. He continued.
“After we defeat Naraku, we’ll also be able to complete the jewel, since he has most of it, and we have the rest. I’ve been thinking a lot about the jewel, our original quest was to complete the jewel, not to kill Naraku, but the two have become one in the same. With everyone else, their mission will be ended at the fall of that bastard, but….. me and you, we have something else to worry about.”
“The jewel?”
“Yeah.”
“Do you still want to use it to become…. ”
“A full demon? Feh. Not any more, I’ve seen how I become when I’m a full demon; it’s not how I want to be, not any more.”
Kagome looked up into Inuyasha’s eyes, and almost, not quite, she wasn’t sure, but thought she might, have seen love in his gaze back down at her.
“Don’t you dare become human!” she suddenly spat out at him, but with a smile on her face.
“Huh?”
“I know you probably weren’t thinking that, but just in case, because I know that would purify the jewel, and I know that’s what you’re talking about, I have to purify the jewel, so it’ll cease to exist.”
“But Kagome…..”
“What?”
“DonR 17;t you see it stupid?!”
“Hey wait a minute!”
“Keh, if you purify the jewel, the well will stop working!”
Kagome hadn’t thought of that. Now she remembered, the one time she had been trapped on her side, when Inuyasha stole her shards and threw her in, she couldn’t get back through, the well didn’t work, not until she dug up a jewel shard that Shippo had in there. The magic of the well was intertwined with that of the sacred jewel, no more jewel meant, no more feudal era.
“What do you suggest?”
This was a first, Kagome actually asking Inuyasha what he thought they should do.
“Well…. ”
Inuyasha looked down into Kagome’s eyes, and almost, not quite, he wasn’t sure, but thought he might, have seen love in her gaze back up at him.
“Keh. Don’t see why you have to purify the stupid thing. I can protect you from demons who try to steal it.”
“You want me to keep it?”
“Keh.”
“So I can still travel through the well?”
“Keh.”
“Oh Inuyasha!” as she lunged forward, embracing him in a passionate hug.
“Keh…. ” he hugged her back “ ...I just didn’t want to force you to choose.”
“What do you mean?” she asked, breaking the hug to look him again in the eyes.
“Kagome, I……I ain’t gonna die with Kikyo.” He blurted out.
Where did that come from? She hadn’t brought her up, but then again, she had thought it, and maybe her eyes betrayed her.
“I can’t live, or die, without you Kagome……”
She blinked, eyes starting to water, but with happy tears.
“If I went with Kikyo, not having you by my side would bring new meaning to Hell.”
He placed his hand on her hand, and continued.
“I realized long ago my feelings for her have changed, I know you think I love her, and I do, but not as a mate, not any more. The others helped me see, Kikyo’s dead, but I’m not.”
Finishing his rehearsed speech, he opened Kagome’s hand, so she could look at the necklace he’d made for her. The kanji on the center stone said “Koishii” (beloved)
“I don’t want to loose you, Kagome.” he said gently down at her, after allowing her enough time to read the stone 50 times, as she rolled it around in her hand.
“I always thought… that I would loose you.” She sobbed
“Keh, well now you know different, wench.”
Wiping her eye, she whispered, “Inuyasha, where did all of this come from?”
“Finally got some sense knocked into me.” He mumbled, as he felt the bump on his head left by Miroku’s staff. Kagome chuckled, and then put on the necklace; Inuyasha’s smile growing much wider at the sight.
“Kagome…. ”
“Yes?”
“Know how Miroku and Sango are promised to mate, after the mission is over?”
“Yeah…..wait, what?”
“Kagome…. ”
“YES!” she screamed, not even letting him ask, and after all of the practicing he’d done too…
“Oi wench, I ain’t asked yet!”
“Oh then ask me Inuyasha, ask me every day, and every day I’ll say yes!” she said at a quickened pace while she embraced him.
“Keh” was his reply, before leaning forward, kissing Kagome.
The first time they’d kissed, she’d kissed him to keep him from transforming into a full demon, and this time, he’d kissed her, for nearly the same reason, for she was so hysterically giddy, he feared she’d loose her mind if he didn’t distract her. But now he was faced with a new problem, who was going to distract him? Distract him from the kiss that had ceased his mind to function.
