Chap ter 2 – Naraku’s Heart

The next morning was a happy morning, to say the least. They’d shared the news with her family, and (for the most part) they were all overwhelmed with joy. It did take her grandfather about an hour before he’d look at her as if she weren’t possessed, but finally, he too agreed, that if that was what she truly wanted, then he’d be happy for her. Kagome’s mother immediately began talking ‘wedding plans’ to which Kagome tried to explain, it won’t be until after they kill Naraku, and they didn’t know when that would be.

“But it might be soon right? You said you and Inuyasha had heard a couple of rumors about where he might be hiding, right?”

“Three rumors, now…..” Inuyasha added.

“Well then, I’d better get shopping!” her mother said cheerfully, as she whipped out a few catalogs, where did those come from?

After breakfast, the young couple left Mrs. Higurashi to her catalogs and went out towards the well, so that they could get this Naraku-slaying over with. Kagome thought she saw the figure of a man staring at them out of the corner of her eye. Him again she thought, as she’d seen him before, from time to time. It creped her out a little bit, to think that she might have a stalker, but since Inuyasha didn’t seem to sense any danger, or notice the man at all for that matter, she felt better, and together they headed into the well house.

Kagome and Inuyasha emerged from the well hand in hand, indicating to the watchful eyes of their friends, that he’d successfully proposed. Suddenly, the screeching sound of a kitsune’s voice proclaiming “Kagome’s back!” and the abrupt impact of said kitsune to the chest of said miko, was enough to distract them both from being embarrassed by the oogles they were previously receiving by a certain lecherous monk.

“Kagome! Welcome back.” Hugged a very delighted Sango “And happy birthday.”

“Thanks.”

“Come, Lady Kagome. We have presents waiting for you back at Kaede’s.”

The group made their way back to the village, Shippo bombarding Kagome with questions the entire way, mostly over what presents she’d received. Most of her presents were either makeup, hair accessories, or video games (which required explaining to the young kitsune). She had also received some clothes, from her mother of course. Turns out, Inuyasha’s necklace was her only piece of jewelry, but even if it hadn’t been, it would most certainly still have been her favorite. She figured the magnetic ionized bracelet thing from Hojo fell under the medical supplies category.

Upon entering Kaede’s hut, she was greeted with a small pile of rice paper wrapped gifts. She’d nonchalantly mentioned in passing that gift wrapping in her time was paper, not cloth, and they’d actually wrapped her presents in paper because of it. It was a greater gesture than she thinks they realized, considering what an ordeal it was to make paper back then. They’d even painted flowers and stuff onto the paper so it wasn’t plain.

Inuyasha was the first to notice Kagome had started to cry.

“Oi, Kagome! What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s (sniff) wrong, you guys are all (sniff) the best friends I could ever have.”

“Open mine first Kagome!” cried an impatient Shippo.

“Which one is it?”

“This one!” He handed her one of the presents.

Kagome opened the gift to discover the cutest little toy horse, it looked very well made. Strangely, she thought she could sense a demonic aura emanating
from the carving.

“It’s one of my weapons!” Shippo proudly proclaimed. “Kaede made a spell for me that put my fox magic on the horse itself, so it’ll work for you. If you ever need a quick escape in battle and no one can get to you, you can ride away on the horse!”

“Oh my Shippo, that is very thoughtful, I….. I-”

“Keh, like I’d ever let something happen to her!”

“I just thought…….”

“Shippo…..” she reassured the kit “You gave me one of your precious treasures, thinking of my safety, this is the best gift ever.”

“Mean it?”

“Absolutely.”

“Keh"

“Okay, my turn!” bounced Sango, she’d been working on her present the longest, even longer than Inuyasha took to make the necklace. Handing Kagome the largest gift, she could tell upon impact with her hands, that it was soft, like paper wrapped fabric. She opened it, to find a beautifully embroidered shawl.

“Where did you learn to make such a thing? I love it!”

“Lady Kagome?”

She turned to meet Miroku’s eyes. When had he started calling her lady Kagome again anyway? She thought she told him that that formal stuff wasn’t necessary. So, she thought she’d give him a taste of his own medicine, replying “Hai, Houshi-Sama?”

His eyes flickered with shocked confusion, then seemed to glare “Touché” before he quietly handed her one of the two remaining presents.

His gift was a rosary of prayer beads designed to aid Kagome in developing her miko powers. There had been times of extreme danger, when she’d demonstrated the ability to put up a barrier, or even purify demons with her touch. She should not then, be rendered helpless in battle upon shooting her final arrow, so he would aid in her training in the art of spiritual barriers and sutras.

His and Shippo’s gifts seemed to revolve around protecting her from immanent danger. She knew the final battle with Naraku was close; it must have influenced their gift giving. She was mildly surprised that Sango’s shawl hadn’t been made of fire-rat fur or something. Amazingly enough, Inuyasha didn’t seem upset by the monk’s gift; though true he was probably already aware of what it was. But the way Miroku had offered his spiritual services, almost sounded, if she didn’t know him better, to be of the utmost pure and innocent.

Kaede’s was the last present, opening the wrapping to discover a subduing rosary nearly identical to the one Inuyasha wears.

“Tis more my gift for Naraku, than ye child.” The old miko smirked.

“Now that’s a good idea!” bellowed Inuyasha, who wasn’t previously aware of her gift.

Kaede went on to explain, that with Naraku being the type of demon he is, the rosary would likely only work once, or possibly twice, before he’d be able to successfully remove or destroy it. But, if used wisely, it could provide the needed second to complete the mission of destroying Naraku’s heart, a heart which no longer resided within his own breast, but concealed itself in the form of a white haired infant. Along with the rosary came Kaede’s promise to teach Kagome the necessary spell to use it, as well as several other miko spells, which were also included as an extra part of her gift. It couldn’t all be about killing Naraku after all, though that was rightfully so, on the top of everyone’s ‘to do’ list.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It turned out that everyone’s concerns were well-placed, as later that month while they followed the various leads which all had pointed them towards the same village, it quickly turned out that the rumors were true. Rumor’s that Naraku’s poisoned insects had been seen nearby a village, a village which strangely, produced no demonic aura, whatsoever. This could have meant that the village simply had no youkai near it, save the insects, except that when one of said bugs apparently got within a certain range to one of the houses, its demonic aura disappeared as well. This could only mean the presence of the youki masking stone which Naraku had stolen from the mountain youkai. Myouga, as well as other reliable sources, had all confirmed this.
It wasn’t long before the battle started. They’d found the baby Akago, who no longer spoke since his older brother Hakudoushi was separated from him, apparently taking much of the intelligence and abilities with him. Kagome kept him at bay with her sacred arrows, which were able to pierce his barrier. Kanna held the baby, and she had that damn mirror of hers that could suck in anybody’s soul. Well, anybody’s but Kagome, she’d already learned that, so she wasn’t afraid and made her move. Upon firing a final arrow towards the airborne Hakudoushi, Kagome rode a blazing Kirara down towards Kanna and the infant. The brat gave chase upon his flaming horse, but Sango’s Hiraikotsu provided the necessary distraction Kagome required to take the lead. Kagome knew she couldn’t fire an arrow at the baby, because Kanna could suck it up in her mirror and shoot it back at her, so, she’d have to stab the baby with the arrow!
The ghostly Kanna wasn’t much for running away, and Kagome thought she was actually going to do it, until
“Dance of Blades” and she and Kirara were knocked off course.
Knocked off course, but not hit?
Inuyasha caught Kagura’s whisper of “I’m sorry, but he’s watching.” Before she released another “Dance of Blades” towards the now earth bound Kagome and small Kirara.
Inuyasha successfully retrieved the two and threw back his own “Wind Scar” attack, which Kagura in turn, dodged. Miroku was about to suck up both Kanna and Akago into his wind tunnel before a huge sworn of poisoned insects suddenly appeared. In the midst of the sworn, the shadow of a man draped in a baboon hide became visible, and
the stench let Inuyasha know, this wasn’t just one of his puppets.
Suddenly, our gain had their hands very full, dodging flying tentacles of demonic dermis, and Kanna had almost successfully gotten away during the distraction, until a one-armed Demon Lord made his presence above the horizon.
“Sesshomaru!” Kagome cried, surprising the others who weren’t even yet aware the Western Lord was there, except of course for Inuyasha, who had previously detected his scent. “That baby that Kanna holds! That’s Naraku’s heart!” she bellowed.
Without saying a word or even giving a gesture that would acknowledge he’d heard her, Sesshomaru made his way down towards Kanna, who prepared to use the power of her mirror against the lord. Would she really be able to suck up his soul? Surely, Lord Sesshomaru was strong enough that such tricks would not affect him. But as it turned out, he wouldn’t have to worry, as Kanna’s mirror was suddenly smashed to pieces, having come into contact with a chained sickle.
“Kohaku!”
“Sango! Sister, I’m, I’m sorry!” as Naraku sent his lesser demon minions after the boy, who brought him down with one swipe at the shard in his back.
Kohaku!!!!!!!!”
With a single swing of her Hiraikotsu, she wiped out every last one of the lower demons. Ordering Kirara to fetch Kohaku’s body, she prepared her weapon for another round, this time at Naraku himself. Inuyasha was doing a fairly good job at keeping the hanyou occupied; slicing at the tentacles he’d spring forward from his body, occasionally causing greater damage with his “Wind Scar” and “Backlash Wave” attacks.
Sesshomaru attempted to use his youki whip, which would have easily taken down both Kanna and Akago, except Naraku commanded his insects to intervene, taking the brunt of the attack.
A moment without insects allowed Miroku to try his hand, literally, and again he attempted to suck the two up into his void, until Kagura’s “Dance of Dragons” attack forced him to reseal his hand and run for it. Once again, Kagura’s attack seemed to have easily missed its intended target.
Kagome was too busy battling Hakudoushi to try going after the baby again, and even though she and Kaede had made an inordinately large quantity of arrows, Kagome still feared she would soon run out. But suddenly, Hakudoushi commanded Entei to leave, and he flew straight down towards his brother.
Why became apparent, as Sesshomaru had once again made his attack on the infant, only this time, slashing with Tokijin. Apparently sensing the serious danger such an attack holds, and having an inner protective instinct for his master, Hakudoushi placed himself right in the brunt of the attack, both he and the demonic horse Entei disintegrating upon contact with Sesshomaru’s “Dragon Strike”.
Kanna was still knocked backwards by the shock wave, and loosing grip on Akago, she quietly called “Kagura” as the wind demon flew by on her large feather, catching the infant in midair.
Kagome was also in the way of demon shrapnel that flew in her direction, and seeing that Inuyasha was very preoccupied with an increasingly aggressive Naraku, she suddenly remembered Shippo’s toy horse, and pulled it from her pocket, tossing it into the air calling out “Fox Magic” and the large, rather inflatable toy looking horse, provided her quick escape. Shippo himself wasn’t at the battle, they’d insisted he stayed behind in Kaede’s village as it would be far too dangerous for him, but she thought, she’d have to thank him for the present.
Miroku, Sango, and Inuyasha still hand their hands full battling Naraku, who had on two occasions had successfully engulfed Inuyasha within his body, momentarily, only to be broken free by the Hiraikotsu, or some of Miroku’s sacred sutras. Inuyasha used his “Diamond Spears” attack once, but quickly learned that was a mistake, when Naraku some how spat the blades back out towards everybody. Sango shielded herself with her Hiraikotsu, but it took on too much damage for her to continue to use afterwards. Miroku used his staff to emit a barrier, and Kagome also successfully used her bow to spiritually deflect the shards while Inuyasha used the sheath of
Tetsusaiga.
Sesshomaru and Kagura were out of harms way of the flying diamond spears, and for a moment, looked at each other in silence. Would Sesshomaru attack Kagura to kill the infant? Would Kagura attack Sesshomaru to stop him? Suddenly, she spoke, but not to the Taiyoukai.
“Naraku, isn’t this ironi?. Now it is I, who holds your heart in my hands.”
“Kagura you traitor.” he cried, and reached into himself, pulling out Kagura’s heart. “I could squash you before you could begin to prepare your attack.”
“Don’t bet on it!” cried Kagome, as she pulled out the rosary, and chanting something so low only Sesshomaru’s ears could fully hear, tossed it up into the air. It began to glow, and spin, and separating into the separate beads it was comprised of, flew straight towards Naraku, attaching itself to his neck.
“Kagura! This will only work once!” she warned, then screamed “Naraku!” at the top of her lungs.
In an instant, the rosary glowed, and the hanyou was pulled frantically towards the ground, momentarily pinned there.
Naraku! Naraku! Naraku! Naraku!” she bellowed continuously, keeping him pinned until his morphing body allowed him to slip from the rosary’s grasp, which he was slowly beginning to accomplish.
But Kagura recognized her one and only chance for freedom, taking her fan, and as simply as if it had been a dagger, decapitated the whelp in her arms.
