Chap ter 3 – Friends and Enemies
In one instant, all that could be heard were tremendous screams of pain, as Naraku’s body separated into the many pieces it consisted of.
At the same time, Kanna also suddenly fell to the ground, having no demonic aura of her own, her soul was apparently linked to that of Naraku’s as well, and upon his death, the obedient servant that was Kanna, also died. As the infant’s body fell to dust in her arms, Kagura suddenly fell to the ground, grabing her chest in what appeared to be pain, and everyone wondered for a moment if she would parish as well.
But then suddenly, she smiled, and then her smile quickly turned into laughter, as she proclaimed “I’m free!” at the top of her lungs.
“You ain’t gonna start trouble now, are you?” asked an aggravated Inuyasha.
“My dear Inuyasha….” She chuckled sarcastically, “As they say, the enemy of my enemy-”
“Feh, I ain’t your friend!” he interrupted.
Sighing, Kagura simply took the feather from her hair, tossing it up into the sky and leaping onto it as it enlarged.
“Shall we settle on ‘allies’ then?” and she flew away before Inuyasha could do anything other than “Feh”.
Kagome ran up to Inuyasha hugging him enthusiastically, they’d finally done it, it was finally over. Miroku had by now ripped the protective rosary from his hand, examining his palm only to discover normal flesh where a black void once was. Ecstatic that his life long quest was over, and the rest of his life could now begin, he searched around for his Sango, spotting her after a moment, kneeling besides the fallen Kohaku. Her eyes were closed in prayer, which did not conceal the tears that already stained her cheeks. She had Kohaku on his back, hands upon his chest. Hearing footsteps approach, she believed it to be Miroku, and did not open her eyes, until the sound of another’s voice startled her.
“He was used by Naraku as well.” Sesshomaru rather emotionlessly stated. It wasn't a question.
“Yes..…” Sango uttered, chocking back tears “ .…it, it wasn’t his fault.”
“He was your family?”
“My only family, my brother, I have no one now.”
“You have me….” Whispered a certain monk, who had now made his way within earshot of their conversation.
“Oh Houshi-Sama!” she cried, falling into Miroku’s embrace, letting the tears fall now, not caring that the demon lord still observed her.
Though he stood silently, with his usual stoic expression, Sesshomaru had a moment of thought at Sango’s words. It was true, that his brother was also his only family, not that the concept agreed with him. But also, Kohaku had died in an attempt to save the Taiyoukai, by smashing Kanna’s mirror, which may possibly have offered a minor threat. Making his decision, Sesshomaru approached Kohaku, drawing his sword.
Everyone stared in disbelief as Sesshomaru swiped at the boy with Tenseiga, restoring him to life.
“Why?” Sango asked through her tears.
Had Jaken been there, he’d have lectured her about never questioning the Lord’s motives, but fortunately, for all, Jaken had been put in charge of watching Rin and Ah-Un. Surprising Inuyasha, and himself, Sesshomaru granted the human an unrequired answer, simply stating “I had my reasons.” Before walking away in remaining silence.
Sango was now crying tears of joy as she clinched the apologetic Kohaku in an unending embrace, joined by an outer embrace Miroku held over both of them. Inuyasha stood silently surveying the area for a moment, taking in the reality of it all. Then, he shifted his gaze to focus on locating Kagome, who he quickly spotted, standing over the void were Naraku fell, gathering shard fragments. He retrieved the one that laid near where Kohaku had fallen, and went over to join Kagome.
“Just two shards left.” She said, holding the almost complete jewel in her hand, which was tainted a dark bluish color. Should Inuyasha even touch it, he would transform, but yet, Kagome was not affected by the tainted jewel.
“Here” he said, handing her Kohaku’s shard.
She added it to the jewel, which now revealed one single chipped spot remaining, a spot that the shard they’d retrieved from Inuyasha’s father’s grave, would fit perfectly into.
Upon completing the jewel, it seemed to purify itself right before their eyes, as the tainted darkness of Naraku’s evil vacated the stone, leaving it a heavenly white pearl. Not even thinking about it, she happily handed the jewel to Inuyasha, just as means of showing off the results of their three years of hard work.
“Look! We did it!” she proclaimed, as he rolled the jewel around in his hands, which did not taint him, nor taint due to him, now that Kagome had already purified it.
Sango and Miroku looked on in what was a moment of truth; would Inuyasha suddenly turn tail and run, stealing the jewel? Of course not, don’t be silly! Handing it back to her, he smiled, and said “Let’s get back to the village.”
She readily agreed, and leaned in for a quick kiss, acknowledging that she remembered quite clearly what now joyfully awaited her, a life with Inuyasha! They were promised to be mates upon the defeat of Naraku, just as Sango and Miroku were also engaged, and those two also exchanged a quick kiss in celebration of the fact that Naraku was dead, and they were still alive! Sango, Miroku, and Kohaku all rode back to Kaede’s village atop Kirara. Kagome and Inuyasha traveled separately, she upon his back.

Somewhere, lurking in the shadows, the undead priestess, who’d witnessed the entire battle, felt a new twinge of hatred for her reincarnation. Kagome had taken Inuyasha away from her, and she had to get him back. She knew now, that killing Kagome wasn’t an option. She’d already tried that in the past, and it sparked an anger in the hanyou Kikyo’d never thought possible. Besides, even for being a resurrected corpse fueled by the powers of jealousy and revenge, she still didn’t think she could bring herself to kill Kagome. Not after she’d single handedly saved her own life, yet again. No, death was not an option, but get rid of her she must, so she settled for the next best thing. Kagome was from the future after all, high time she returned there.

On their way back to the village, Inuyasha suddenly picked up a familiar, and unwelcome scent.
“Hey dog shit, get your hands off of my woman!”
“Keh, she ain’t your woman, never was, but now, she is mine!” he smirked triumphantly.
Koga approached the pair, and sniffing, proclaimed “You haven’t mated!”
“Keh, well we’re gonna.” At which point Kagome blushed fiercely, but shyly agreed.
Closing the gap between him and Kagome, Koga grabbed her hand, earning a growl from Inuyasha which he promptly ignored. Looking Kagome straight in the eyes, he asked her “Are you sure?” to which she replied “Koga…. Yes, yes I’m sure, it’s Inuyasha I want. I’m, I’m sorry.”
His eyes betrayed him, revealing his hurt emotions, but after a moment, he perked up, stating that he wanted her to be happy, and if that’s what she really wanted, then he accepted it. He quickly threatened Inuyasha that he’d better not ever hurt Kagome or he’d be back, to which Inuyasha simply “Keh”ed, and Koga was gone. He didn’t run nearly as fast any more, without the shards in his legs, but he still had managed to vanish just as quickly as he had appeared.
Kagome got back on Inuyasha’s back, as they continued to make their way to the village. She caught pieces of Inuyasha mumbling something to himself about a certain mangy wolf, thinks he can just show up whenever he wants, something about him not even bothering to show up at the battle, either because he was too dimwitted to realize there was one, or was too afraid he wasn’t strong enough to survive.
For the most part, Kagome ignored his ranting, lost in a daydream revolving around their soon-to-be life together.
