Chapter 5 – Things meant, and not meant, to be.

Everyone stared in disbelief at the scene before them. Inuyasha was fighting with Kikyo. Was this a trick? Was this not truly Kikyo? And where was Kagome? They had many questions and no answers as the fight raged on, their ears picking up only on the hints Inuyasha would unconsciously give as he ranted.

“How could you?” “I loved you!” and “She was everything you’ll never be.” Were among the sentences uttered.

Enough to give them a heads up, that Kikyo had done something to Kagome, and from her noticeable absence, something bad.

Kikyo said nothing in return, as it was all her strength to continue to dodge his attacks. He hadn’t drawn his sword, but “Iron Reaver Soul Stealer” was strong enough to slice trees in half. She was about to get away, her soul collectors wrapping themselves up around her, lifting her into the sky, when Miroku, seeing the hurt in Inuyasha’s eyes, thought to himself oh no you don’t and hurled sacred sutras upon her demons, dissolving them instantly. Kikyo crashed back to the earth with such force, Miroku was afraid perhaps he’d killed her, until they saw her stagger to her feet. How can you kill something that’s already dead, after all? By this time, Sango had had enough, certain that they were out of the loop on something very important, something she half accused Miroku of being aware of himself, after he joined in the attack.

“All right, that’s enough!” she bellowed. “What’s going on here, and where is Kagome?”

Sarcastically, Kikyo began to scratch her head. “Kagome? Kagome…. ah yes, my reincarnation. Why, she won’t be born for another 500 years.”

This angered Shippo who piped up “What are you talking about?”

“My dear kitsune, your Kagome never belonged here, she doesn’t exist any more, not to us anyway.”

“You killed her!” Shippo screamed, lunging after the miko himself before Inuyasha grabbed him by the tail.

“She ain’t dead, just…..just trapped.”

“Trapped in her time? Did Kikyo seal the well?” Miroku asked.

“I’m sure Kaede can find a way to unseal it.” Suggested Sango.

“No.” Inuyasha cringed out, daring the tears to fall from his eyes, as surely he’d cut them down before they could ever touch flesh. “Kikyo, Kikyo tossed a potion into the well, that broke it, on Kagome’s side. Her well, doesn’t exist any more.” He finally finished, his tears having won the battle against the hand who had sworn to wipe them away.

Though no one said it, they all thought it, including Shippo. That bitch!

Gaining composure, our hanyou pressed on, as this was no where near finished.

“What I want to know is, WHY?”

“So that you would no longer be torn between the two of us, so that you may now freely join me in Hell, as was your promise.”

“Did ye not also promise to uphold a life of virtue, one of purity and truth?”

“Kaede, little sister, how pleasant it is to see that you still walk this earth.”

“Ye are not my sister, though ye would have mine eye confused, my memories are not. I watched my sister die, I watched her burn, I buried her bones. Bones that were later stolen to create thee, create thee with dark magic, and dark purposes.”

“Lady Kaede….” Miroku informed, “….Kagome is gone, Kikyo….”

“Aye, I heard, I was near here in the fields when the commotion summoned me.”

“What do you suggest we do?” he asked.

“Release her.”

Excuse me?” Inuyasha demanded. “You want me to let her go?”

“Nay, Inuyasha, release her from this world. She is a stranger to it.”

“Kaede?” Sango questioned in surprise, but the old miko turned, and headed back towards the village with her herbs.

Inuyasha didn’t waste time, he didn’t want to risk changing his mind if he hesitated too long. Not that he felt he needed Kaede’s permission, but having it, did ease some of the guilt. He just had to tell himself over and over again, that this was not the same Kikyo he knew those 5 decades ago. Raising up his sword, it only took a single slash, without even the need for an attack such as Wind Scar, and the undead priestess fell. Twice now, Inuyasha found his final words to Kikyo before her death to be “How Could You.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Days quickly turned to weeks, and weeks into months, as everyone tried to go about their lives as usual. Inuyasha wore the Sacred Jewel around his neck, attaching it to the rosary he also still wore, making the two like one necklace. He wouldn’t wish on it, wouldn’t dare, he wanted to keep it intact just in case, just in case Kagome reconstructed the well on her side, and it would work again. At first, he tried the well several times a day, then at least once a day, to a ritual of once a week, before he finally stopped trying.
“Are you giving up Papa?” Shippo now called Inuyasha, a token of the life they almost had together.
“Keh, no, we’ll see her again, even if we have to wait 500 years, we’ll get her back.”
“Can you live that long?” Shippo asked genuinely. True, provided he doesn’t get slain in battle, Shippo could easily live to see Kagome’s time, but hanyous typically age much faster than full demons, and provided Inuyasha did survive, under conventional means, he’d have an appearance of a man in his late 50s, perhaps early 60s. That wouldn’t do. He decided then, with Kaede’s help, to learn to tap into the powers of the Shikon no Tama. He did not want to become a full demon, but if he could use the jewel to increase his life span to that of one, then, he would still be a young man when he reached Kagome’s time.
Inuyasha stayed in the village, living with Shippo in the hut he’d built for them, which he’d made large enough to also house Kagome, just in case. Though Shippo had grown accustomed to, and preferred to be indoors, Inuyasha actually spent most of his nights in the God Tree, hoping to sense Kagome’s presence and reach her through the tree, as they’d done once in the past, when again, come to think of it, Kikyo had tossed her down the well. Damn, how’d he not see this coming?
The villagers had all widely accepted him over the years, and the younger children did not recall a time when Inuyasha was ever considered their enemy. Miroku and Sango did their best to lift his spirits whenever they could. He still occasionally tried the well, mostly as a result of giving in to Shippo’s unending pleas that he try one last time, but deep down in his heart, he felt his goal now of ever seeing Kagome again, would be to wait for her. How does one wait for someone for 500 years???? It was all he could do to keep himself from going mad. So Inuyasha was delighted when Sango gave birth to their first child, a boy, whom they named after Miroku’s grandfather. The new pup offered a welcomed distraction for Inuyasha, who would often help Kohaku watch the child, so the young couple could be off on their own somewhere. When Sango became pregnant again, she became more of a homebody, allowing Inuyasha and an aging Miroku more guy time, anything to keep his mind from Kagome. He tried to remember, tried to convince himself that what Kikyo had said was true, about Kagome not being born yet. But he knew, knew that one day went by for him the same as it did for her, and should she ever fix the well, and the two were rejoined, as much time would have passed for her as would have for everyone else. He found he would rather now, that she didn’t fix the well. Myouga had tried to give him lessons in timelines, and alternate realities. If he were to see an old Kagome, visit with her, hear of her times, but then later due to his now long life, come across Kagome again, and interact with her upon the destruction of her well, then, that would be altering a timeline, and the older Kagome which he had met, would then cease to exist. Further more, when he does reach her time, he’ll have to make sure not to come into contact with her until after the destruction of her well, or else not only risk damaging her timeline, but his own. The whole concept made his head hurt, so he made it much simpler. He would no longer try the well, since even if she did fix it, she couldn’t get through without the jewel anyway. That seemed to shut Myouga up, but upset Shippo.
Oh well, can’t please all of the demons all of the time.
