Chapter 7 – New Allies
Inuyasha was speechless. Had his brother really just invited him to step within the walls of their father’s castle? Never before had he been permitted to go there, never before had he tried. After being chassed away at around age 6, when he dared approach the gates shortly after his mother’s death, he quickly learned, he was not welcome. Perhaps Sesshomaru really had changed some, if not in the last two centuries, then maybe in the last decade. After all, he now housed a human, a human female no less, whom he’d rescued, and cared for since early childhood.
“M’Lord?”
Sesshomaru flashed Jaken his trademark do not question me if you value your life expression, then turned back to enter the gates. Kagura walked besides him, what was she doing here, anyway? Rin followed after a grumbling Jaken, signaling to Kohaku that he was welcome too, if he wished. Not wanting to press his luck against the unpredictable lord, Kohaku politely excused himself, stating that he was not injured. In truth, he’d readily agreed to come to Sesshomaru’s aid because he felt he owed him for having saved his life, but now that favor was repaid, and the lord owed him nothing. Atop Kirara, Kohaku embarked on the journey back home, but Shippo, however, walked directly along side Inuyasha as he slowly made his way within the gates of his father’s castle.
One of Sesshomaru’s servants tended to Inuyasha’s wounds, which the hanyou considered minor, though, if he were still human, would have been fatal. Kagura began to tend to Sesshomaru’s wounds, earning the pair a raised eyebrow from the observing hanyou.
“What the hell? When did you two become so friendly?” he asked sarcastically, expecting to earn a rise from his older brother, something along the lines of how incurably weak and stupid he was, being a half-breed. He was not expecting Sesshomaru’s content silence, followed by Kagura’s genuine response of
“About a year ago.”
It was now Shippo’s turn to be untimely blunt, as he asked the pair “You’re mated?”
Noticing the mixed scents of the two, it confirmed his hypothesis before they could either confirm or deny, and Inuyasha kicked himself for not noticing the scent earlier himself.
“Lord Sesshomaru’s personal business is not your concern!” scolded a loyal imp.
The lower servant who tended Inuyasha knew better than to make her presence known beyond that of the one who was in charge of hot water and clean cloth, and as such, said nothing.
“Jaken, leave us.”
“M’Lord?”
Again, the do not question me if you value your life expression was aimed at the toad, who hysterically bowed out of the room muttering how he was not worthy of the lord’s forgiveness, or something like that, Sesshomaru never paid much attention to his apologetic rants. Inuyasha was now well bandaged, and even though Rin had not sustained much new damage since the last time Sesshomaru had healed her with Tenseiga, the servant nonetheless began to examine Rin for any signs of injury which required her attention.
Inuyasha stared dumbfounded at his older half-brother, earning a smirk in return for the confusion that reflected in his eyes.
“What’s the matter little brother? Hoped I would leave father’s realm to you one day?”
“Keh, not likely.”
“Indeed.”
Kagura interrupted the sibling rivalry upon finishing the last bandage on her mate.
“Enough you two, I’m going to fetch us some tea, try not to kill each other before I return.” Walking two steps, she turned back “Shippo right? Would you please assist me?”
“But….” But before he could finish his protests, Inuyasha gave him a look that said get going and Sesshomaru smirked at how, at that moment, his little brother reminded him of himself.
Rin excused the servant, and then herself, as she went off to change into fresh clothing. Inuyasha stared at the departing Rin, an expression of amazement on his face, that earned a cool “What?” from Sesshomaru.
The two now alone, Inuyasha looked back across the room at Sesshomaru, and calmingly, yet every so slightly sarcastic at the word, stated
“Your ‘daughter’…..is, quite an accomplished warrior.”
“As is your son.” Was his reply, not denying the implications of how he viewed Rin.
Inuyasha caught a gaze from Sesshomaru that seemed different from every single other time he could ever remember looking his brother in the eyes, then realized, it was because his eyes were lacking in the disgust Sesshomaru always held for him.
“Inuyasha…” he continued, “….is it true?”
“Keh, is what true?”
“Your mate was sealed away from you?”
Inuyasha fought to hide the shock from Sesshomaru’s comment. Why would he care about him and Kagome? In the past, he would have immediately assumed Sesshomaru was simply gaining pleasure from Inuyasha’s pain, as he’d taunted him in the past already, about he and Kagome. Stating how a weak half-breed would of course choose a human, mostly due to the fact that no true demon would ever have him, was one of the first comments he’d ever made upon seeing the girl fight along side his half-brother. But something in Sesshomaru’s eyes, as well as his voice, told Inuyasha that this was not his intention, this time. Perhaps, because he himself now had a mate, he understood certain things that, before, he chose to ignore existed.
Sesshomaru was slightly surprised, and unsettled, by the show of human emotions his blood relative was showing in his eyes. The fact that one who shared his father’s blood also contained human blood was something he’d never before forgiven, but Kagura had helped him to see differently. It was not Inuyasha’s fault he was born any more than Kagura could be held responsible for having parted from Naraku’s body. Despite being an incarnation of a once twisted and evil hanyou, whose origin began as a human whose body was consumed by lesser demons, Kagura was now her own person, with her own heart and soul. If Sesshomaru could see past such a creation, even as much so as to find himself attracted to her now as his mate, then surely, he could accept the fact that Inuyasha was also a son of his father, and therefore, a descendent of the once mighty Inu clan of the west.
Looking back up to meet Sesshomaru’s gaze, he found the look of disgust had returned, but this time, felt it was warranted, as he’d had the audacity to show the weakness of his human heart. Inuyasha kicked himself inwardly at showing his brother any weakness, then managed to muster a cold Sesshomaru-like expression of his own, as he finally answered
“Yes.”
“I see.” Was the reply, not so much cold, but, no that couldn’t be right, Sesshomaru’s voice did not sound sympathetic, Inuyasha was sure he was simply hearing things.
Continuing, putting on a strong front more for himself than his brother, Inuyasha stated, reminding himself in the process……“I’ll get her back, one day.”
“I thought she was from another world?” Sesshomaru questioned.
“Not another world, just another time.”
Sesshomaru eyes flashed briefly with an emotion before he could regain his control over them, the emotion Inuyasha caught in them, was confusion.
“Kagome…..” he uttered, how long had it’d been since he’d said her name out loud? The act of doing so induced his eyes to moisten, but this time, Inuyasha accepted his human side, as he choked out the rest of his sentence. “Kagome is from my village, just…..just 500 years or so, in the future.”
“How is it possible she came to be in our time?”
“The well, in my forest, existed in her time too. It worked as a portal, with the magic of the Shikon no Tama.”
Inuyasha pointed to the pearl-like jewel he wore around his neck. Sesshomaru had sensed the jewel, but since he never desired such a trinket, he’d ignored the fact that Inuyasha possessed it. But, pondering the words Inuyasha had spoken, he quietly questioned
“Existed?” Questioning the pastence usage.
Sighing, Inuyasha continued to explain how Kikyo had managed to use dark miko powers to destroy the well on Kagome’s side, thus, trapping her in the future. He ended the story, confirming that he’d taken in Shippo, and the two of them were waiting together, until the day they get Kagome back. The rumors Sesshomaru had become familiar with stated that the ‘dead’ miko had somehow sealed the ‘strange’ miko away from his brother, but the details were never revealed. Other rumors had confirmed what he’d already known, that his brother and said ‘strange’ miko were mates. Sesshomaru deemed that to know that one’s mate was not dead, but simply unreachable, was a torment not even Inuyasha deserved. His voice almost still showing signs of sympathy, Sesshomaru attempted to remind his half-brother of his weakness, without sounding too cruel.
“You cannot live for such a time without aging.”
“I can.” He said seriously, again pointing to the sacred jewel around his neck.
“I see.” Was all Sesshomaru said, understanding what Inuyasha meant, that he’d tapped into the power of the jewel to make himself immortal, which explained why he didn’t use the jewel to increase his physical strength in battle. He was already joined with it for one purpose, and likely, could not use it for anything else without first breaking the link he'd already created, which he of course, would not do.
It was around this time in their conversation that they were rejoined by Kagura and Shippo, whom each carried two cups of herbal tea. Sesshomaru took his cup from Kagura, and silently began to drink, as did Kagura in suit upon taking a seat besides her mate. Shippo handed Inuyasha his cup, and after sighing at the reflection in the liquid of a white haired man with a tear mark on his cheek, he wiped his face, wondering how he’d failed to notice it fall, then began to sip the tea as well. Shippo looked around the room at everyone else for a moment, and then, gazing down into his tea, he found himself thinking about his and Kagura’s conversation.
