Chap ter 8 – Kagura and Sesshomaru
Shippo had followed Kagura into what must have been the kitchen. There were several servants, mostly animal demons, like the cat that had tended to Inuyasha’s wounds, who were in various stages of preparing herbs and foods, as well as a fellow fox, a vixen, he noticed, who was washing the floors and counters.
Kagura had commanded, well, it was really more of a request, that they were prepared four cups of herbal tea. She then plopped herself down upon a nearby cushion while their drink was prepared, and patted the spot besides her for Shippo to join her.
“Your lips are burning with questions, young one.”
“How, I mean, when, well okay, but how, I mean why?”
Kagura laughed at the kitsune’s baffled attempts to understand how she and Sesshomaru could have mated, or more so, how Sesshomaru could have mated, with anyone.
She went on to tell the heartfelt tale, while the servants all tried their best to appear not to be listening, as it was a subject which burned their lips as well.
She reminded Shippo of the fire that had burned part of the forest five years ago, and went on to explain that she had returned to these lands the year before, after having spent a year traveling where the wind took her, relishing her freedom.
***Flashback***
Upon seeing the rather large and threatening looking plume of smoke arise from the west, she’d decided to investigate. During her approach she could make out the large dragon-like youkai that was no doubt responsible for causing the blaze, and as she grew closer, could make out what appeared to be the figure of a man, battling the monster in the center of the raging inferno. It wasn’t until she was nearly on top of the destruction before she realized the man she saw, was Sesshomaru. His white fur and clothing was surprisingly free from soot, but the nearby incapacitated Jaken and Ah-Un, were both suffering from rather bad burns. Sesshomaru looked up to acknowledge he’d sensed her approach, but immediately went back to the task at hand of disembodying this intruder upon his lands.
The fire was creating its own wind, and it battled against Kagura’s, making it difficult for her to sustain flight. Fearing she would loose control of her feather and fall, she climbed to a greater height, which granted her a better vantage point for the amount of destruction this creature had caused. Spying the chard earth below her, she spotted what appeared to be a human girl, huddled to a rock in the middle of the nearby stream, safe from the fire’s touch. After a few moments, Sesshomaru successfully defeated the dragon, but the explosion his final blow produced created a shock wave so strong, all things in creation ran from it, including the river. The rapidly increasing currents of the approaching tsunami were too much for Rin to handle, and in an instant, she lost her grip of the rock that had been her shelter.
Sesshomaru could hear her cries for help, but his senses were badly impaired by the sounds and smells of the burning forest. In a single bound, he leapt into the air, soaring far above the trees, scanning the area in which he knew to be Rin’s last position. Spotting her being swept down stream, he again took to land, bolting faster than the flames could burn, as he ran through the still smoldering remains of what was once part of his bordering woods. When he reached the clearing that exposed the river, he found a wet and dripping Kagura, holding a wet, dripping, and coughing Rin, whom Kagura hugged tightly to her, soothing her sobs with exclamations of how everything would be all right.
For an instant his memory flashed to the moment Kagura had kidnapped Rin at Naraku’s bidding, but logic dictated that her intentions would prove more noble, this time. Before he could speak, Kagura leaned down to Rin, whispering “See, there he is.” as she put her down upon her feet.
“Lord Sesshomaru!” Rin bellowed as she bound up to her caretaker, and he permitted her to hug him, despite the fact that she was still quite wet.
“What about Master Jaken, and Ah-Un?”
“Tenseiga will heal them.”
She gripped him tighter as he’d turned, prepared to reenter the woods, momentarily unaware that the forest behind him still very much blazed with fire. He hadn’t noticed in his haste to retrieve her. They could not go back this way, nor, any way, as he looked around, realizing they were quite surrounded.
“Kagura, can you douse the fire with your wind?”
“Hmm, I’ve never tried that before, but I’m sure I can.” She said, as she took to the sky again, and began fanning an oxygenless breeze over the flames, suffocating the lot.
“Rin, let us return, you require new clothing.”
“Can Lady Kagura come too? Her clothes got ruined too!”
***End Flashback***
“Lady Kagura?” Shippo interrupted.
Laughing, Kagura said Sesshomaru’d later told her that her expression was quite something to behold at that statement. Going from servant to Lady can certainly come as a surprise.
“So, it was Rin who hooked you two up?”
“No, not really, but, it was Rin who got me an invitation to the castle. Though I think deep down, she’d sensed my attraction to her lord, smart girl."
Kagura paused breifly, smiling, then resumed her story.
"I respected his power, and his honor, but did not truly believe, at the time, that we would become mates. After seeing the disarray his kingdom was in, I volunteered my services as an ally to him and to the west. To my surprise, he accepted, and, though I’m told it required some persuasion from Rin, I was permitted to dwell within the castle. For about four years I was nothing more to him than an ally, though he had few, so even in that I still felt honored. It was certainly better than being a servant, which I was not. But something in him changed when he’d caught wind of a rumor…..”
Kagura paused again, chucking to herself.
“What rumor?”
“In a way, Shippo, you’re the one who brought Sesshomaru and me together as mates.”
“I did?”
“He’d heard that his brother, Inuyasha, was raising you, training and teaching you like his son. It made sense, since we’d already known Kagome had taken you under her wing, so to speak, and with her gone, Inuyasha must have felt it his duty.”
The mention of his mother’s name made Shippo’s eyes start to tear, but he understood Kagura meant no cruelty by it, and motioned for her to continue.
“I’d made some passing comment about how Inuyasha was not immortal, being a hanyou, and how since he’d adopted that village to be under his care, he must be training you to take his place after his death. That’s what made Sesshomaru realize, he too, one day, needed an heir.”
Kagura reflected on how Sesshomaru had approached the idea to her, stating bluntly, that he admired her power, and the will of her spirit, and that together, they would bare strong children. At the time, Kagura had been rather taken aback. To say she was surprised would be the Oscar winner of understatements. Shippo crinkled his noise at her explanation, saying she made the whole thing sound like a business agreement. Shrugging, Kagura said bluntly, that that was how she thought of it too, in the beginning.
“A lot can change in a short time, little one. There may not have been love in the beginning, but there is now.”
So.... Shippo mused to himself, that bastard Sesshomaru has learned to feel love. Shaking the thought from his head, he cursed himself for letting too much of Inuyasha rub off on him. He then gave Kagura belated congratulations, and proceeded to assist her in carrying their now prepared tea back into the other room.
***Flashback***
“Kagura, may I speak with you?”
“Yeah, sure Sesshomaru, what’s on your mind?”
Hmm, even from the first day she served this realm under me, she spoke as if we were equals, then this Sesshomaru shall make it so.
“You have reminded me recently of a great many things.”
“Oh?”
“My pathetic half-brother has an heir for the realm he has claimed as his. Though his mate was taken from him and he has no blood offspring, that kitsune is recognized by others as his son.”
“Is that a problem?”
“This Sesshomaru does not care about that puny forest or weak human village, it is a realm that suits Inuyasha well.”
“But....?” Kagura could see something deep within Sesshomaru’s eyes that told her this wasn’t really about Inuyasha at all, but that he was troubled with something, deeply troubled.
“I find it disgusts me to know that my younger brother is better prepared for the future than I. Kagura, I require an heir.”
“Ex…..excuse me?”
“You are strong, I have always admired your skills, and your ability to betray your creator, Naraku, shows your strength of spirit as well. We would produce strong children.”
“You….you want me to bare your children?”
“This Sesshomaru wants you, Kagura, to be his mate.”
Feeling a little light headed, Kagura stumbled a bit, but was expertly caught by Sesshomaru before she was able to hit the ground. In truth, she’d realized her feelings for Sesshomaru went beyond admiration quite a while ago, but never thought, never, that he could ever feel anything for her. Then a spark of sadness struck her eyes, which he caught, when she realized that he really didn’t want her, he simply required her to produce his offspring. She mused to herself, that if it could be accomplished without mating, he would certainly choose that course of action instead. Uncharacteristically, Sesshomaru actually found himself taking an interest in what thoughts had upset the woman he held in his arm, and asked her as such.
“Do you want me, or do you only need me, because you want children?” was her reply.
Kagura did not move herself from the position he held her in, cradled against his arm. Leaning into his body more, she chose to relish the moment. Sesshomaru appeared to be in deep thought at her words, but whether or not he truly understood where she was coming from, she couldn’t be certain. Doesn’t he realize that she loves him? Realizing it herself upon that thought, Kagura had already decided, whatever Sesshomaru’s true motives were, she would agree, agree to be his mate. Finally, his eyes again met hers, and he spoke.
“Inu youkai mate for life, and I would not take my responsibility lightly. You would be much more than simply a producer of offspring. Our children would be a mixture of the two of us, a symbol to all of our joining. The desire to procreate is imbedded within the souls of all living creatures, yet, this Sesshomaru has never before sought a mate, has never before... desired one.”
“Until me?” she asked, shyly.
Sesshomaru never broke his stoic expression throughout their conversation, but at her last question, he did crack the faintest hint of a smile, something you’d expect to see from him if he were fighting Inuyasha and the half-breed just didn’t something incredibly stupid. But in addition to the smile, which Kagura wasn’t certain was truly there or if she were merely seeing things, he then also bowed his head, ever so slightly, nodding in the affirmative at her inquiry. Then, just as suddenly as his smile had appeared, a nearly identical smile, except perhaps a tad larger, then made its debut upon Kagura’s lips. Still finding herself to be very much in an embrace by the demon lord, she then leaned her face upward, and gently brushed his lips with her own. When she felt the kiss returned, her eyes began to shed their first of many “happy” tears.
***End Flashback***
Wiping a tear from her cheek, Kagura realized she’d lost herself in happy memories again, and brought her head back to the here and now, as the others were finishing their tea. Setting down his cup, Sesshomaru stood, then reached his hand down in order to assist Kagura in standing as well. He then turned back to address the others.
“I require rest after such a battle. You are welcome to stay the night.”
He then gently kissed Kagura’s hand and released it, excusing himself down the same hall which Rin had traveled earlier. Kagura crossed the room, approaching Inuyasha and Shippo, then passing them by, she stopped at the entrance to the other hall, then turned back to speak.
“Inuyasha, Shippo, come, I’ll show you to your room.”
Inuyasha “Keh”ed, but Shippo flashed him a look that said be nice, which caused him to “Keh” again, at Shippo. Kagura couldn’t help but chuckle at the two, what a pair, inu and kitsune aren’t exactly known for getting along. Shippo’d bound back up fairly quickly, and already had taken his spot besides Kagura before Inuyasha was done stretching and fiddling with his bandages. But he eventually did also fallow Kagura down the hall, which lead them to a nice guest room they’d share until morning. After showing them which door it was, Kagura excused herself, and headed back down towards her and Sesshomaru’s room.
