Chap ter 12 – Back where we started….

Regaining consciousness, Kagome felt the rather large bump on her head, and realized she must have been struck by one of the flying stones. Staggering back to her feet, she stared at what remained of the well…. how could this have happened?

Tears swelled up inside her instantly, and without warning, the dam gave way, permitting the cascade of salt water to flow freely from her eyes. She would have bolted out of the well house, except that she was still a bit too dizzy to walk straight, but she did manage to kick the door open with such force, that it alerted the man who stood not too far away, staring up at Goshinboku.

“Kagome?” he called, rushing over to her assistance upon realizing her head was bleeding.

“No No No NO!!!!” she cried to no one in particular, seeing the man, but at first, not giving him much of a second thought, as she continued to run up to her house, until he called her name a second time.

Upon stopping, her knees gave way, and as she stared at the quickly approaching stranger, she took in his appearance for the first time.

It was him, the same man she’d seen around the shrine a few times, and a few times around town too, she was sure. Was he stalking her? He was fairly young, though obviously older than her, perhaps late 20s? He was very well dressed, in a nice business suit, with Armani shoes, no less. She would think such a man would be afraid to get a wrinkle in his wardrobe, let alone kneel down upon the dirt next to her, embracing her dusty, and bleeding, body. Wishing to believe him a Good Samaritan, she tried to regain her footing, accepting his assistance to do so, while thanking him, but at the same time, assuring him she was all right.

“Kagome, are you hurt badly?”

“Do I….do I know you?”

The stranger blushed, then confessed….

“It’s me, Shippo.”

“Sh…Shippo!???”

“I ….I have to keep myself disguised like this, it’s my fox magic, remember?”

She glanced behind him…. “No tail.” She mumbled.

He chuckled. “I’ve gotten better.” He whispered.

Suddenly, Kagome lunged forward, embracing him madly, crying her eyes out so badly they hurt, breathing so erratically she gave herself a headache, or was that the mild concussion?

“Shippo, it’s really you, is it really you? The well, oh GODS the well is! Wait, how did you get here, the well is broken, right?”

“Yeah, the well is good and broke.”

“But then…..?”

“Conventional method.”

“You mean?”

“Yup.”

“How long?”

“498 years, give or take a few months, I think.”

“You think?”

“Easy to loose track of.”

“Yeah I guess so. So, does this mean, I’ll never, I mean, I never did, before, ever fix the well, did I? I mean, did you ever see me again, in the past?”

“No…..” he tried hard to mask the sadness his face obvious portrayed when he answered her, years upon years without her flooding back into his mind.

“So then, they’re all dead, aren’t they?” She asked, voice not much more than a whisper. “Sango, Miroku, (gulp)...”

He interrupted her before she could find the courage to utter the last name on her list.

“Let’s discuss that later,” he said, while flipping open a Boost Mobile he’d pulled from his front pocket, and chirped someone saying “It’s happened, I have her.” There was no reply.

“Who???”

“You’ll see….”

Kagome was still too shaken up from the bump on her head, and her overwhelming sense of depression, to even notice the playful smirk across Shippo’s face, or well, the man who was claiming to be Shippo anyway, who she couldn’t help but notice, looked nothing like him.

Suddenly, Shippo noticed Kagome put her hands up to her chest, and mumble quietly “The jewel?”

He grinned, they were right, she would be able to sense it, from more than a mile away, apparently.

“Come on.” He said, gently grabbing her hand and walking her up towards her house, “Let’s get you out of that uniform, you’re covered in dirt.”

As soon as they got to her front door, she hesitated, and turning, quietly reassured herself “Is it really you?” to which he replied, “I’ll drop my disguise once we get inside, okay?”

She quickly nodded, and opened the door. “Mama!” she called, but before she could ascertain for herself due to the silence, she heard a voice from behind her calmly state “Nobody else is home.”

When she turned around to acknowledge, she saw a very adult version of the kitsune she loved so dearly, standing before her.

“Shippo!” She screamed, as she hugged him again.

He was still dressed in his suit, that hadn’t been an illusion. But apparently his shoes were, as he was now barefoot, with fox paws for feet! His short black hair was now long and red, his eyes were green, his ears were pointed, and he had claws and fangs, and oh yeah, a bushy tail stuck out behind him, apparently through a slit he’d had tailored into his slacks.

Suddenly his phone chirped, and Kagome heard the voice of a man announce “Mr. Takumi, we’re approaching the shrine sir, shall I park on the front curb?”

He chirped back “Yes, that will be fine Dojui, thank you.” And he closed his phone.

“Mr. Takumi?”

“Well, had to pick a human name, right?”

“But Mr. Takumi????” she repeated, hesitantly, “You’re not the Mr. Takumi, are you?”

“Well, one of ‘em.”

Kagome looked like she was about to faint, but when he caught her as she stumbled, she just chuckled, and blushed, and finally agreed to go upstairs and change into some clean clothes.

“Wear something nice!” he called from at the bottom of the stairs.

Well no kidding! Wear something nice she mused to herself, I mean, the Takumi’s were, The Takumi’s! Well, she didn’t know who they were, obviously, except that she’d only heard her grandfather mention the name repeatedly, that somebody of that name had saved the shrine from bankruptcy, while she recalled hearing the name on the local news a lot too, when they talked about charities, and donations. How had Shippo wormed his way into this powerful family? She wondered, was it through marriage? But, didn’t he say he picked the name Takumi? Like, way back whenever it was, that he gave himself a last name? She’d have to ask him later, right now, she had more burning questions on her lips, like, had Inuyasha also survived the years, though she knew deep down, that hanyou usually don’t live that long, and if he had survived, he’d likely be very old. She almost started to cry again, before she talked herself out of it, she had her beloved kitsune back, he was like a son to her, even though he was more like an older brother to her, now, she chuckled. Another question, why did she sense the Shikon jewel? She wasn’t sure at first, but now she definitely felt it. He must have kept it, all this time, gotten it back after Kikyo had stolen it from her. But if it still existed, then that meant, Inuyasha hadn’t used it to become a full-demon, and with that thought, went the last shred of hope she’d clinched to, that he could somehow, still be alive.

She came back downstairs dressed in a nice spring time outfit, a skirt that was slightly longer than her school uniform, but not by much, in a light sky blue shade with pink cherry blossom print, and matching pale pink silky tank blouse, that was low-cut, and showed off her beaded necklace, as well as the fresh dog bite on her neck. After she’d cleaned her small head wound, she’d fixed her hair so that it wouldn’t show, and after also quickly touching up her puffy face, and mating mark, with some makeup, she’d ended up going all out, and did eye shadow, and lipstick, the works.

Shippo couldn’t believe his eyes, as he stared at Kagome open mouthed, she was beautiful. This was gonna be good.

About the same time his nose picked up on an approaching youkai scent, Kagome suddenly clinched her heart again, proclaiming the jewel was definitely close.

“Yes it is.”

“Who?”

“You’ll see…..”

As suddenly, the pair were both pulled from their respective thoughts upon the gentle wrapping of a knock on the door.

Kagome quickly looked over to Shippo, who for some reason, had changed back into his human disguise, and smirking, quietly walked away, into the other room. Timidly, she went over to the front door, sensing that whomever was on the other side, was in position of the Shikon jewel, and, she wasn’t positive, but was pretty sure, she also sensed youki energy.

She opened the door…..

There was a man, in a very nice outfit. It was more designer, less business. She started at his feet, as his bright red Versace shoes were enough to catch anybody’s attention. He was wearing dark gray slacks, that looked wool, and hanging behind them, she couldn’t help but nearly immediately notice, the long, long coat. He was wearing a plain white T, except the way it was fitted, and appeared to be made of silk, revealed that it, too, was likely very expensive. His head was down in a way, apparently examining his own Gucci belt, that Kagome couldn’t see his chest or face, so she jumped up to the top of his head, which was wearing a black Kangol beret. She could see his hair coming out from underneath the hat, it was long, and white, and tied back in a large braid, and wait, long and white???

Though perceived in slow motion, the actual timeframe for the above events was about 2.5 seconds, before she noticed the hair…..

“Inu…..Inu..ya..sha?”

He slowly, gently, raised up his head, so she could clearly see his face. It was him! Any doubt that could possibly have tried to convince her, that this was somehow a reincarnation, was put to rest by the fact that he still wore his rosary, with the Shikon jewel entwined with it.

“Name’s Yash Takumi.” he replied, all the while flashing her a look of reassurance, that he did in fact know who he was, and who she was.

She was about to throw herself at him and deliver a barrage of kisses, but, unfortunately she wasn’t able to do so, because he’d done it first. He lunged himself at Kagome, swooping her up in his arms holding her up above his face as he looked at her and spun, then bringing her back down, kissed her with unbridled enthusiasm. It was the kind of kiss you would expect from a man who’d waited 5 centuries to see his wife again. Then, just to make absolutely sure that this was really real, and not another random dream of this day, this day that he’d waited for, for too, too long, he deeply inhaled her scent, and couldn’t help but notice his own scent mixed in with it. That’s right, to her, they’d mated only the night before. He spotted his bite on her throat, foundation unable to conceal from him, her mating mark, and he smiled. He had thought, no matter what, he couldn’t possibly get any happier than he was, when he had first thought about how it would be like to see his Kagome again, but somehow, the site of her wearing his necklace had done it, he had somehow expected her to be in her usual uniform, so seeing her all pretty and pink, wearing her birthday gift, which after all, to her, she’d only been given about a month ago, was just, it was just too much, he began to cry, but…. happy tears.

This startled Kagome, as she wasn’t used to the new, older Inuyasha. And he was older, she realized, as she looked at him more closely. Whereas before he seemed close to her age, around 15-16, and actually started to look a little younger than her as she’d grown but he remained the same, she could see now, he looked to be out of his adolescent appearance, and looked to be a man of around mid to late 20s. Not only that, he was freely showing his emotions, was he feeling all right? In a semi-joking fashion, Kagome put the back of her hand up to Inuyasha’s forehead, while he was grinning stupidly at her with a fresh coat of gloss over his eyes.

“Keh, cut that out!” he snapped, never loosing the smile, as he grabbed her hand.

“Phew, sounding like yourself again, had me worried there….” She chuckled.

“Oh? How ‘bout now?” as he took the hand he held, and gently nibbled at the underside of her wrist.

Kagome “eeeped” when his fangs grazed her delicate skin, but not because she didn’t like the way it felt. He smirked at her.

“Inu….er....Yash, uh, how? I mean, I thought hanyou’s didn’t live as long as full youkai…..”

“We don’t.”

Kagome had noticed he used the word “we” instead of “they”, which suggested to her, he was still hanyou. He obviously hadn’t come through the well, so how???

He said nothing, at first, but pointed to the jewel. She understood what he meant, just like Sesshomaru had, about how he must be using the jewel’s power to live longer. She didn’t ask any questions, didn’t have any questions to ask. Instead, she simply hugged him again, and whispered “I’m glad” into his chest, knowing he could still hear her, even with a hat over his ears.

“Come on….” He finally said, while rubbing her back as she was still clinched against his chest. “Write your mom a note or something, and then come home with me, I…..I have so much to tell you….to show you….I-”

She cut him off by kissing him, yet again, and then quietly agreeing, as she wrote her mom a quick note, which left out most of the details for now, since she herself didn’t know most of them.

Mama, I’m back, we defeated Naraku, but
a lot of stuff has happened. Everything’s okay,
though I’ll be home from now on. The well is
broken, so don’t freak out when Grampa sees
it and starts yelling. Inuyasha is here with me,
but he’s from our time. I’ll explain later, once
he explains it to me! I’ll be back, I love you…
Kagome

Heading out the door, Shippo following behind so as to give them some privacy, Kagome glanced at Inuyasha out the side of her eye, and quietly chuckled.

“Oi, what is it?”

“Nothing, just…..never figured a day would come when I looked over at you, and felt compelled to ask Who are you wearing?” she chuckled again.

“Keh, never figured a day would have come when I’d understand that expression!” he laughed back, and the two locked hands.

“Kagome…..” a voice came from behind

“Yeah Shippo?”

“Watch what you say while we’re in the car, the driver is human, and doesn’t know-”

“Kami, I forgot!” Inuyasha interrupted, then thanked the kit, and agreed with his sentiment, to an understanding Kagome, who then, during their car ride, hmph, ‘car’ ride? It was a limo! remained quiet, simply resting herself against Inuyasha at his side, arms draped around his neck, head plopped down upon his shoulder. Shippo sat opposite them, and couldn’t help but grin, the entire time.
