Chap ter 13 – At long last…...
She didn’t pay any attention to where they were going, so, when the door was suddenly opened for her, and she gracefully stepped out, to find herself at the main entrance of the most luxurious hotel in the city, she tried her best not to stumble.
“You live here?” she whispered low, knowing he’d hear her.
“Take a good look at the mountains around us, recognize this location?”
Kagome looked around, but though all the hills did look familiar to her from the past, they also looked familiar to her from her present, too much had changed, too much of the forest was gone. Seeing this in her eyes, he continued, quietly,
“This is the castle…..”
“Sesshomaru’s castle?”
“He goes by Maru Takumi, now.” Added Shippo.
Kagome froze for a moment, when she realized, she’d heard that name on the news, lots of times. She also had remembered, during the limbo ride, that it was in fact Yash Takumi who had saved their shrine, but that at least made sense to her now. Somehow, she never expected, nor felt comfortable with the concept, that Sesshomaru was in her time.
Realizing she was hesitating, Inuyasha gently tugged at her hand to continue, whispering “Come on…..” while smiling.
When they entered the lobby, Kagome was taken back by how truly magnificent everything was. It was quite, quite, a luxurious hotel. She’d always wanted to see the inside of it, but she never dared even enter the lobby, in her status, she mused. It was the type of establishment billionaires went to for conventions, and movie stars went to for the 7 deadlies. Suddenly, she forgot all about Sesshomaru, as her eyes scanned back in forth, in a hurried effort to take everything in. From the golden fountain in the middle of the room, to the florally painted ceiling, that had art glass sculptures hanging from it. As they walked down the hallway that lead towards the elevator, she couldn’t help but notice the few employees they’d pass by all bowed with respect towards Inuyasha and Shippo, and, though she wasn’t certain, she was pretty sure, at least some of them were youkai, that could somehow disguise themselves, almost as well as Shippo, except she could sense their youki. Especially the midget that seemed hard at work at the concierge desk, who she decided had to be Jaken, when she noticed the way he was stuttering and begging for forgiveness over the phone.
“Is that?”
“Yup”
Nuff said……
When they entered the executive elevator, that reached the very highest penthouses, on the very highest floor, of the very high hotel, which Shippo had to present a special key simply to operate, Kagome couldn’t hold it in any longer.
“Okay, we’re alone! Spill it!”
Shippo and Inuyasha looked at each other, then they both laughed. Holding her hand gently, Yash looked Kagome in the eyes and said.
“We owe it all to you, Kagome.”
“To me?”
“Yeah, papa remembered enough stuff about your time, from his visits, that really... helped.” Shippo added.
“Glad I could help.” She chuckled, then when Shippo’s full statement registered in her brain, she turned to him (who looked like himself again) and inquired “Papa?” tossing a glance over at Inuyasha, who blushed.
“Keh, well……” he began, “Shippo was your son, and, since you were my mate…..” he trailed off.
“You….you raised him?”
“Keh, course I did!”
He was actually caught off guard, when she hugged him again.
She chuckled again, trying to hide the fact that she was still confused. Part of her wasn’t sure what was real and what wasn’t.
The last thing she remembered, she was standing proudly besides Inuyasha, back in his time, Kikyo showed up, and shoved her down the well. A vile vial of something she’d tossed in made the well explode. She’d had a moment of absolute, total, utter heartbreak, then suddenly, a man showed up before her, turning out to be Shippo, and then, out pops an older Inuyasha, who’s apparently been here all this time? Who owned, or at least partially owned, the most luxurious hotel in the city, and there she was, with the two of them, on her way up in the elevator, to the penthouse!
“Hey?” she suddenly asked
“Yeah?” they both kind of replied in unison.
“If you’ve both survived all this time, how many other youkai are still around?”
“Only the stronger, more intelligent ones, the brainless monsters are long extinct.” Inuyasha explained.
“How come I’ve never sensed any?”
“Not any? What about the soul piper?”
“Oh yeah…..”
“They’re around,” Shippo added, “but most live in the less populated areas, easier to blend in when they’re fewer humans to fool.”
“That makes sense…..” She trailed off, as the elevator came to a stop, and the doors opened.
Both men politely gestured for Kagome to exit first, which she did, to find herself facing a round foyer, with three hallways.
“To the left.” Inuyasha said gently, and she willed her body to move through the foyer towards said hallway. Everything was ridiculously extravagant, from the chandeliers, to the side tables with art glass sculptures and/or floral displays in what appeared to be hundred year old vases, and probably were. Not to mention the huge, gold gild framed mirrors, or oil paintings. This was gonna take some getting used to.
“So,” she questioned as they walked down the hallway towards the large double doors at the end, “What’s down the other two hallways?”
“We share this floor with my brother and his family.”
Ahh, well that makes sense, wait, family?
“F..family?”
“Sess….I mean, Maru and Kagura mated, and, so far, have two children.”
Kagome actually caught a small smile grow on the sides of his lips when he spoke of his brother’s children, things had certainly, certainly changed, she realized.
“Not that Marugu is still a child…..” Shippo added, “He’s nearly as old as me.”
“You still look so young…..” Kagome mumbled, more to herself. It was finally sinking in, he was over 500 years old, they both were. Inuyasha was actually more like 700 or so by now. He’d be an old man if it weren’t for the jewel.
While she was pondering her own mortality, she hadn’t noticed when they reached the end of their walk, and Inuyasha paused to open the doors to his suite, however, Kagome did notice as soon as she stepped into the room, when, while looking down at her feet, she saw the floor change from standard hotel carpeting to exquisite marble tile.
Snapping her head up in shock, she gazed at the room before her. Chuckling, Inuyasha gave her the tour, while Shippo excused himself for the evening, having business errands to run. In actuality, he just wanted to give them some time together. Besides, he’s been courting Izime, a fellow kitsune who works in the hotel. The one who he first met back in Sesshomaru’s castle right after the battle. Their relationship had been put on hold for the last 18 years while Shippo practically spent his every waking hour observing Kagome.
Kagome was taken aback by everything she saw, most of the furnishings were modern enough, but had that old world flare to them. The one room that really stood out as being 21st century, had to be the living room, having a nearly theatre size plasma screen on the wall, with a large leather sectional sofa cresenting around the viewing area. It was a complete home theatre, surround sound, the works. They’d been having a mild conversation throughout the tour, but it was time for Inuyasha to get down to business. Sighing inwardly, he tried to build up some much needed courage for what he was preparing to ask her.
It wasn’t until Inuyasha removed his heavy coat, and layed it down upon the back of one of the couches, that Kagome noticed he still wore Tetsusaiga on his hip.
“You still carry your sword?” she asked genuinely.
“Have to….” He stated. “Can’t risk transforming, and a couple times, a youkai’s been after the jewel, and I’ve needed to use it.”
“They’re still after the jewel?”
“Some of ‘em, but only the stupid ones, that want to die.” He finished off, a very Inuyasha smirk on his face. Kagome chuckled.
Moving around to sit down on the sofa, he patted the spot besides him, and Kagome got the hint. They simply gazed up into each other’s eyes for a moment, and just before he could open his mouth to speak, Kagome softly broke the silence, first, with a look of guilt on her face that confused her hanyou….
“I’m….I’m so sorry…..” she whispered.
“Huh? Why?”
“For everything that’s happened, what you had to go through, I can’t even fathom what it must have been like, those 500 years.”
“It was worth it.” he stated matter-of-factly
He saw the doubt in her eyes. Even surrounded by all this luxury, she still saw him as the young hanyou boy he used to be. Chuckling to himself, he realized, she’d been in his company only a few hours ago.
“I would have waited a thousand years to get you back, Kagome.” he smiled a genuine smile.
“Well you have me now, you won’t ever loose me again.”
Kagome expected Inuyasha’s eyes to reflect agreement and happiness at her statement. So when he suddenly looked crestfallen, it confused her.
“Inuyasha?”
Suddenly, he got down from the couch and kneeled before her, grasping her left hand in his, he slipped a gorgeous diamond ring onto her finger.
Where’d that come from? She mused, he must have had it hidden in his pocket.
“Figured you needed one of these….” He smirked, as Kagome remembered, they had been engaged in her time, and they hadn’t had the wedding yet, though they were already life-mates by youkai standards.
“Kagome…..”
“Yes?̶ 1;
“Kagome, would you, will you, stay with me, forever?”
She had a brief look of puzzlement on her face, was he proposing? They were already engaged, hell, they were already mates! Was it just a formality?
“Yes, of course Inuyasha, you know-”
“No, I mean really forever...” he interrupted.
“Huh?”
“I’ve…. .I’ve learned how to…..split the Shikon jewel and……I could use its power to make you immortal, like me.” He managed to finish, silently recoiling when he heard Kagome’s gasp.
“You’re immortal now?”
He silently nodded…..
“As in, you’ll never grow old?”
Again, he nodded, mumbling “It was the only way.”
“And you want me to be immortal with you…..” She trailed off, not really asking him directly, more just realizing it herself, as it finally sunk in.
Inuyasha tried to remain quiet and patient as he saw Kagome rolling over in her mind what she’d just realized he requested. During her tour of his penthouse, they’d had a mild and pleasant conversation about the last few centuries, about how he was able to make his money, and how he’d actually helped Sesshomaru make his. When she had asked how Miroku and Sango had played out their lives, he couldn’t help but let the depression slip from his eyes, momentarily, at the memory of his friends’ deaths, however he quickly perked up when he went into brief detail of the family tree, and Kagome found out she was their descendent. It had made her realize her own mortality though, which she began to ponder for the second time that night.
So now, now that she was pondering it a third time, she realized, he’d seen so many humans come and go, and here, she’d just gone and said he’d never loose her again, when to him, he’d loose her, loose her when she died of old age, what were the decades besides fleeting, when you don’t age for centuries? Putting herself in his position, she didn’t think she’d have been able to handle the separation, even knowing it was temporary, even with the knowledge that she’d get to see him again, 500 years would have been far too long. She was starting to have a nervous breakdown at the thought of being separated from him when the well exploded, and it’d only been a couple of seconds.
So, she considered, how, after all that time, could she force him to just loose her again, due to her own mortality?
Inuyasha stared without a word, or barely a breath, as he watched her ponder over his words, and click the various pieces of the proverbial puzzle that was life, into place. When he saw her looks of confusion, and hurt, change to compassion, and determination, he knew she’d made her decision.
