Chap ter 14 – Forever
Inuyasha saw the sudden look of determination in Kagome’s eyes, and knew she had made her decision.
He flinched, looking away, focusing his attention on her engagement ring. It would rival any piece of jewelry that movie stars rented for the Oscars, yet, it was not as beautiful as Kagome herself, he thought. He found himself looking back up into her eyes when a gentle hand upon his chin eased his face upwards. Before he could even contemplate speaking, before his brain could function much beyond screaming “I love you” over and over in his head, knowing somehow, the miko heard him, he, in tern, heard her voice ask “What must we do?”
“First…..” he began to explain, “You’ll need to hone in on your miko powers, and use them to split the jewel in twain.”
Kagome nodded in understanding, she’d fused the thing back together, shouldn’t be too hard to pull it back apart.
“Morphing the two pieces back into round pearls, smaller pearls, we’ll need Sesshomaru’s help to-”
“Sess…..Sesshomaru’s help?”
Inuyasha chuckled, apparently it’ll take her about as long to get used to the idea of Sesshomaru being an ally as it took him, those many, many years ago.
“He’s the only one who can do it.”
“Do what?”
“Secure the pearls within our eyes.”
“Within our eyes!?”
“Seeing but never seen, guarded, unbeknownst to its guardian…..” he mumbled the ancient spell.
“The black pearl, it was in your eye….” She recollected.
“You remember…..” he sighed happily, it was one of his earliest memories that involved her. He resented himself for the lack of care he showed for her back then, until his proclamations of protection roared the Tetsusaiga to life. Of course she’d remember, he mused. To her, it was only like 3 years ago.
“Didn’t Myouga seal the black pearl within your eye?”
“Yes, but-”
Inuyasha heard Kagome gasp, and realized, she was worried about that pesky flea.
“Keh, he ain’t dead, he’s still around, just too weak to pull something like this off, with the strength of the Shikon and all.”
“But right now, you only wear the jewel, why…….?”
“Well, first of all, at the time I hadn’t thought about this, the thought only crossed my mind a decade ago honestly, but besides that, no-one could take the jewel from me like this, even by force…..” as he illustrated his point, trying to remove it, which in tern meant removing his rosary, which was still sealed ever so strongly around his neck.
It wasn’t that he was the only one who couldn’t remove the rosary, it was that Kagome was the only one who could.
“But it’d just be safer to have it inside us, better safe than sorry, especially since any necklace with the jewel on it, wouldn’t be bound to you, unless you want a rosary……” he trailed off, smirking.
Kagome blushed, and her face grew even redder when she caught Inuyasha’s joking mumble of “Hey, come to think of it….” While scratching his head in apparent thought, only to have Kagome bop him upside the head with one of the many throw pillows from his sofa. Then Inuyasha burst out laughing, which, in turn, caused Kagome to laugh as well.
They didn’t procrastinate with putting Inuyasha’s plan into action. After their small pillow fight, a still chucking Inuyasha chirped Sesshomaru with his cell, telling him they’d be right over.
“N…now?” asked Kagome.
“Keh, why not now?”
Inuyasha could tell her apprehension was about seeing Sesshomaru, not going through with the fusing, so as they headed out the door, he gently wrapped his arm within hers, whispering “Don’t worry” in her ear. Besides, he had a small surprise waiting for her over there as well, another old friend who’s just been itching for this day to finally come.
Coming back towards the elevators, they turned, and headed down the center hallway off the foyer, and back down, towards the massive doors at the end, that was Sesshomaru’s penthouse. Along the way, Inuyasha went into a small explanation of what exactly to expect. That he’d learned a way to mix their energies together, and it would literally, bind them together in life. Though they wouldn’t ever grow old, or fall ill, they could be killed, just like a youkai could, though the odds of that happening get continually slimmer as time, and humans, progress. He explained that with the way they were linked, should one of them die, and break the bond, the other would loose their power. Not die instantly, simply cease to be immortal, and continue to grow and age, from that point on. That way, if one of them were to ever die, the other wouldn’t be locked away in an eternity of solitude. He’d already done it once, didn’t feel like doing it again. Kagome agreed that she too, felt that was most likely the best way to do it. She couldn’t even begin to fathom eternity without him. He also reassured her that Sesshomaru insisted, should there be a battle, at which he would of course be present, should one of them fall, he would revive them. She chuckled quietly to herself at that, thinking Sesshomaru really must have changed. I’m not in Kansas any more she mused.
After only a moment, they reached the end of the hall to Sesshomaru’s suite. But before they could knock, the door opened, seemingly on its own, until Kagome spotted a young girl, appearing to be around her age except perhaps a tad younger, creep out from behind the large heavy door she’d just opened.
“Uh, hello.” Mumbled a slightly confused Kagome.
“You must be Kagome!” the girl burst out, while lunging herself at the miko. “Uncle Yash has told me soooo much about you!”
Kagome flashed Inuyasha a look. He chuckled, then pried the century-old adolescent off of his mate.
“Kagome, Nakishi. Nakishi, Kagome.”
“Nakishi, huh?” she asked politely, while adjusting her eyes to look her face to face. “That’s a pretty name……”
She studied the girl’s features: she had black hair, with the exception of a white streak running through it, her eyes were red, and with those eyes, plus the string pearl earrings she wore on her pointed ears, Kagome couldn’t help but notice how much she looked like Kagura. However, those purple stripes on her cheeks, as well as on her clawed hands, gave away her inu heritage, even before she grinned, revealing her fangs.
“A pretty name for a pretty girl.” Came a voice from within the room. Nakishi turned around, happily yelling “Daddy!” and running over to where a man stood, by the entrance to the kitchen. “She’s here!” the girl finished, as Kagome and Inuyasha entered the penthouse, which was even more exquisite than Inuyasha’s Kagome thought, if that was even possible. She saw the man whom Nakishi addressed as ‘daddy’ just as she heard his response of “I know” to her excited exclamations.
He exited the kitchen and stood before them in the main living room. Inuyasha had already plopped himself on the couch, but Kagome stood there, staring drop jawed for a moment. Before her was Sesshomaru, no question about that, but he had changed soooo much. Besides the fact that he had both arms, which she noticed almost instantly, he too, like the others, was no longer dressed in his period clothing.
He wasn’t in a business suit either, which Kagome was expecting, because the only shoes she saw by the door when they removed theirs, were business dress shoes. Instead, he was wearing tight, tight blue jeans, that had a detailed Greek pattern stitched within the denim, and the words Versace Jeans Couture in English plastered randomly across them all over the legs, front, and back. His silky black button-up shirt flowed loosely over his chest and stomach, as he wore it un-tucked, sleeves rolled up to about mid-length. He’d cut his hair some, as it was much shorter than she remembered, yet would still be considered long, as he had it pulled back in a small ponytail. That was it, Kagome realized as she still stared in shock. Just jeans and a shirt, albeit designer and expensive, he was dressed very casually. No armor, no spikes, no swords, no fur boa even. Upon hearing Inuyasha clear his throat behind her, Kagome gathered her senses, and bowed slightly, saying “It’s been a long time.”
“Yes, it has.” Was his stoic response, well, at least he sounded like the Sesshomaru she knew and feared. That it, until his next sentence,“Welcome to the family, Kagome.”
Okay, he’d never called her by her name before, she was always either ‘Inuyasha’s wench’ or on the few occasions he addressed her personally, he called her ‘miko’. But, she tried to reassure herself, 500 years is a long time, he was bound to change, a little.
Suddenly, the voice of Inuyasha behind her distracted her from her ponderings again, as he said, “Someone else has missed you.”
“Who?”
Instead of responding, he simply gestured to Nakishi, who in turn stuck her fingers in her mouth and whistled. Suddenly, out popped a small cat that was apparently down the hall awaiting her summons.
“Kirara!” Kagome gleamed happily, as the two-tails leaped gracefully into her arms, meowing happily, while occasionally licking her face.
“She always did love children,” Inuyasha explained, “so she’s been staying here as a playmate for Nakishi.”
“Come on Kirara, let’s go to our room….” The young girl requested, as the two-tails mewed a quick bye to Kagome, and bounced down, following the young youkai down the hall.
“Okay, let’s do this thing.” Inuyasha said suddenly.
“Huh? Oh! Right……” she mumbled to herself, then looking back up into Sesshomaru’s gaze, she caught him quietly chuckling to himself, before he moved over to where Inuyasha was sitting in the living room, and joined him by sitting on the couch across from his brother and mate. Kagome tried not to blush from the mild embarrassment she’d caused herself from acting so surprised, and turned to also sit down, plopping down next to Inuyasha.
Sesshomaru spoke again, his voice regaining the stoic indifference Kagome was so familiar with.
“Do you not require time to train your powers?”
He was addressing her, she realized, and quickly responded.
“I won’t know until I try, but I’m pretty sure I can do it now. My powers have gotten stronger over the last 3 years.”
“Indeed.” He stated matter-of-factly, still recalling quite clearly how she was able to project a spiritual barrier around herself, as well as apply a subduing spell during the final battle with Naraku. “Then let us begin.”
“Right.” She said, as she lifted the rosary up and over Inuyasha’s head, removing it, along with the Shikon no Tama that was entwined around it.
Inuyasha gently ran his fingers across his chest where the rosary had always been, and now was not, he wasn’t expecting to miss the thing so much. But it had served its purpose, as a constant reminder of his connection to Kagome, who now sat next to him, untangling the string the Shikon was on, with that of the rosary, until finally removing the large white pearl, which suddenly caused the other beads to separate, and drop around her and in her lap. She ignored the broken pieces of rosary as she clinched the jewel tightly in her hands, eyes clamped shut, as she concentrated. Inuyasha and Sesshomaru both looked on with quiet amazement at her powers, while her hands began to glow a brighter and brighter pink, then just as quickly as it came, the glowing vanished, and Kagome opened her hands to reveal to smaller pearls of equal size and shape. Kagome was exhausted, and could barely keep her eyes open as her head flopped backwards upon the couch. But she could rest now, she’d done her part, the rest was up to Inuyasha. He took the pearls from her, smiling back when he caught her smile at him, and gently, pierced the tip of his finger with his opposite claw, and, dripped three drops of his blood on each jewel. He then grabbed Kagome’s hand, she’d seen what he did and didn’t hesitate, as she felt Inuyasha’s deadly sharp claw barely prick her skin, it was no worse she thought, then getting a blood work test at the doctor’s. He gently squeezed three drops of her blood on each jewel as well, and immediately the miko blood purified the darkness that was beginning to form in the jewels from contact with his youkai blood. He then mumbled something in a language Kagome did not understand, but still, she understood that it was part of the spell. Inuyasha then opened his hand so that Sesshomaru could take the jewels, as he approached the couple on the couch that is across from the one he was sitting on while they prepared for him. He took one of the two pearls, and slowly, lowered it towards Inuyasha’s left eye, until, little lightening bolts of magic reached out from the eye itself, and pulled the jewel the rest of the way in. He repeated this act with Kagome, who was struggling not to fall asleep, until the feeling of Sesshomaru’s clawed hand upon her face to guide her angle, temporarily bolted her wide awake. She felt the oddest sensation as the jewel entered her body, seeming to give her a surge of energy, and for a moment, everything she saw with her left eye had a tint of pink to it, until she felt the pearl go in deeper, and finally, her vision returned to normal colors.
She looked over at Inuyasha, and he at her, each staring at the other’s left eye, looking to see if they could spot any trace of the Shikon in there, but they couldn’t see it, though they could feel it, not so much physically as spiritually, as they felt the power their bodies gained from the jewel, and each other. The sensation was more vivid for Kagome, since Inuyasha had already tapped into the jewel’s power, and his body was more readjusting to gap in power he felt when it was temporarily removed, though he could also now feel the link he and Kagome shared. As for Kagome, she didn’t necessarily feel her miko powers rising, but she was definitely getting stronger, as her senses grew stronger, as her hearing suddenly picked up the playful sounds of Nakishi talking with Kagura in the other room. She’d never before even realized Kagura was home, now, she could fully sense her youki, along with that of half of the staff in the hotel, and if she wasn’t mistaken, some of the guests.
They thanked Sesshomaru for his assistance, and departed gracefully to make their way back down towards Inuyasha’s suite. They did take a moment to politely say high to Kagura before they left, though.
“How do you feel?” Inuyasha inquired, with slight apprehension apparent in his voice. He wasn’t sure how his youki would mix with her miko aura.
“Fine I guess.” She answered softly, “Except…..” (he held his breath….) “I feel stronger. I can sense things I never could before.”
Releasing the air from his lungs, Kagome instantly picked up on his audible, as well as inaudible, sighs of relief.
“Good, I’m glad….” He began, “I wasn’t sure how your miko energy would interact with my youki, you could have lost your powers, but I was hoping that instead they’d grow stronger.”
“I’m not sure my miko energy did grow stronger….” He heard her mumble.
“But, I thought?”
“What I mean is, my miko senses feel the same as always, but it’s like, I also have your youkai senses.”
She demonstrated what she meant by going into a list of all the different sounds she could currently hear, the various conversations taking place in the hotel rooms below their feet, the honking horns of the cars outside, as well as the 2, wait, no, make that 3 airplanes that were currently flying overhead. She could not only smell Inuyasha’s scent, as well as the shampoo he’d washed with that morning, but also the leather of his shoes. She could even ‘smell’ his emotions, for lack of a better word. For example, the deeper and deeper feeling of amazement he was radiating as she continued her list did not, itself, go unnoticed.
They’d continued to walk down the hall towards Inuyasha’s room throughout this conversation, but when he’d stopped at the door to let her walk in before him, he found her standing a few feet behind, holding one of her shoes in her hand. Had she somehow hurt her foot? How’d he not notice this?
“Kagome?”
“I want to try something…..” she mumbled, so quietly even she, herself, would not have previously been able to hear.
Suddenly, without warning, she chucked her shoe at Inuyasha, as hard and fast as she possibly could. He hadn’t much time to react, due to her quickened speed and increased hand/eye coordination. He barely had the second necessary to throw up his arms in an attempt to block the object, but as he did so, the shoe bounced off of a pinkish force field not more than half an inch from his flesh, and fell, quite chard, to the ground.
“What the-!” “Ahhh” “Kagome?”
“It would seem….” She sounded almost as stoic as Sesshomaru, except her face was displaying the biggest smile Inuyasha’d ever seen, “....that you have gained my powers as well.”
“How is that possible?” he mumbled. Kagome could smell his confusion. Apparently he hadn’t thought about it. After all, how can a hanyou have miko powers of purification? But nonetheless, there lay her shoe at his feet, burnt to a crisp. Looking down at said article, Kagome could pick up his whispered mutter of “sorry.”
Replacing Kagome’s missing shoe turned out not to be an issue as Inuyasha began to shower her with the five centuries of gifts he’d collected for her, which included, several pairs of shoes, as well as complete outfits, one of which she’d decided to change into. She absolutely adored her Francie doll, as well as several of the now antiques, that would have to be delicately kept on display, never to be used for their original intended purpose, but she loved them nonetheless.
Kagome decided that since she had left her mom a note, which was mainly only to explain that the well was broken, so that they wouldn’t freak, and otherwise, they weren’t necessarily expecting her home yet, anyway, that she would stay the night with Inuyasha, and return in the morning. Though he hadn’t said a word about it, she could sense his tension. He could probably smell himself on her, and 500 years is a long time to wait.
