Chapter 6: A Moment
Lord, help me live from day to day
In such a self-forgetful way
That even when I kneel to pray
My prayers will be for OTHERS.
Help me in all the work I do
To even be sincere and true
And know that all I do for You
Must needs done for OTHERS.
And when my work on earth is done
And my new work in heaven begun
May I forget the crown I've won
While thinking still of OTHERS.
~Charles D. Meigs (Excerpts from poem “Others”)
`Well…he `did' deserve it…' She thought, keeping a hand over her mouth in case she decided to laugh again.
After the…fight, he had recovered soon enough, threatening to strangle her with a passion she hadn't thought he had. In reaction for possibly her life, she had zapped him with a potent volt of her purification energy-and knocked him out cold.
But that was not exactly it either...because he hadn't been knocked out `cold' exactly…but instead…well…
She placed another cold compress over her husband's forehead and saw him glare at her, another few droplets of sweat rolling down his face.
She had sorta…well…done the opposite…
“You `bitch'.” He hissed, sweat pouring down his temple as she wiped down his neck with cold water. She fought back another grin and made her expression more serious.
“Excuse me…but I think it's funny.”
“Funny? You `cursed' me!”
She shrugged.
“It's not a curse. It's an adverse reaction of my powers reacting to the energies within your bloodstream.” His eyes turned into slits in response.
“I always knew you were a witch!” She rolled her eyes, ringing out the cloth and then dipping it back into the bowl of cold water beside the futon.
His chest was bare, sweat covering him everywhere. His face was red with heat, his hair matted with sweat. He still had his training pants on that he had worn to fight her, but she had to fight him to keep them on. The threat being that she would just leave him there.
“Well…either way, this `witch' as you chose to call me, is taking care of you. Well actually, the reason why I am is because no one else `would', but that's beside the point…”
He hissed at her and sat up on his elbows, sweat droplets rolling down his bare arms.
“I want a divorce!” He said furiously. In response, she threw her head back and laughed.
“I'm kidding! I doing this because I feel bad for doing this to you!” He only continued to glare at her, swiping the rag from her hand and pressing it hard into his ribs. He gave an almost undetectable sigh of relief and she took another rag and started on the other side of him.
“Stop sulking and roll onto your back or I will reverse it and you will huddle yourself up in every piece of clothing you have!”
He gave her an outraged look.
“You wouldn't dare…I would kill you!”
She laughed with her mouth closed, trying to stop it but unable.
“How? You'd be chattering so hard you'd barely be able to move!” He glared at her and she took his elbow, making him roll over. He did with as much complaint as he could muster and she poked him hard in the back of the neck. He tensed up immediately, making her sigh.
“Just shut up and let me wash you.” She said with an irritated sigh.
He growled at her in response, unwilling to go quietly.
“Don't you patronize me woman!” He said angrily, even as he jumped when she `accidentally' poured some particularly cold water in the center of his back.
She glared down at him.
“I will do what I want - and I am not patronizing you!” She said in annoyance as she rubbed the cold water into the muscles of his shoulders and back. He relaxed somewhat but then immediately afterwards stiffened up again and she gritted her teeth.
“I will give you nothing! You won by inappropriate means!” She smacked her fist into his back making him try to get up on his arms. She only knocked one arm out from under him and continued on. He growled at her again.
“I refuse.”
“You don't even know how to shut up, do you?” She asked as she moved his hair off of his back and settled it around the side of his head where it wouldn't get wet.
“You heard me! I am not declaring you a winner! If nothing else, I should win automatically!” She jerked his head to the side so that his cheek was against the floor and slapped him in the face with the wet cloth making him yowl like a cat and fling her away from him in anger. Automatically grabbing the opposing wrist, she ended up bringing him with her and ending up in a tangled mess with her on her back and Sesshomaru on top of her.
She felt a strange feeling in the pit of her stomach as they both went still, Sesshomaru's golden eyes staring down at her. She felt his breath against her nose and her eyes widened in surprise. What was he…?
“If it means so much to you…then we can have a rematch.” She whispered softly, trying to get the feeling out of the pit of her stomach. He drew back slightly in surprise and she sighed, placing her hands on his chest as she pushed him back.
“Whatever happened to you hating me?” He asked darkly as she situated herself on her knees and wiped his neck down with the cloth. She paused at his question and looked away for a moment before looking back at him.
“It takes more energy then if I just decided to put up with you.”
He raised an artfully done eyebrow at that and she shook her head.
“Wait a minute - put up with me?” He sounded outraged again and she stood.
“Sesshomaru, no one willingly stays in `your' company.” He hissed at the insult and she turned, marching out the screen door. He was about to go after her when he heard the faint sound of snapping fingers and then the overwhelming heat radiating through his body just - stopped.
His eyes widened in surprise. Did she just…?
“DAMN HERRRRRRRR!” Throwing the towel away, he took after her with the fury of a wild boar.
He could have sworn he heard her laughter somewhere down the hallway.
