A Deeper Destiny: Chapter Eighteen
Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha. Rumiko Takahashi holds all rights to him. I do not own the song Magnolia no Joukei either. It is sung by Rurutia and so the song, as well as its lyrics, belongs to her.
Alone at the edge of a pond, a lone figure stood in the light of the slowly descending sun. His silver tresses reflected the golden rays, golden-colored eyes mimicking the light on his hair. His normally cold eyes were lit with worry and concern, unconcealed and free for all to read. Looking down at his reflection in the water, his eyes widened when he saw a ripple form, unprovoked, across the smooth pond surface. There had been no wind nor the slightest hint of a breeze, and the pond was undisturbed of any leaves nor objects. His breath hitched suddenly as he felt a tug on his aura. A powerful aura, one that rivaled his, was reaching out; gliding alongside his own aura and prodding playfully. Initially, he didn’t recognize this aura. Who had a prowess equal to his and dare act so informally with him? His eyes widened indescribably for a moment before he took off, following the call of Kagome’s aura.
His heart and mind raced frantically as he skimmed over the tree tops, feet barely touching the leafy branches. She was safe, she was somewhere near, and she was calling out to him. He was so relieved, and yet, so very nervous. Why had she gone like that? Did she crave a little adventure? Had she gone off to chase someone? Had she willingly left with someone? Distantly, he recognized the direction he was being led in, this familiar route he was taking. Long, silver hair streaming behind him, he increased his speed with one thought in mind; Kagome.
Landing deftly in the thick grass, he looked up to the tallest magnolia tree, the one in the very center. His heart twinged as memories flooded his mind. He, as a pup, playing among the gnarled roots while his mother watched and laughed. Snuggled in the warm embrace of his mother as she sang to him. Playing hide and seek up in the tree tops. With a small toss of his head, he strode forth, intent on finding his Kagome.
“I’ve read the scroll, Sesshoumaru.” Looking up at the branches above her, she stated in a matter-of-fact tone, “Should a Miko and Youkai of equal strength mate, their power would escalate to unparalleled heights.” Turning her gaze back to him, she gave him a knowing look. “You think of me as a means of strengthening your power?” Cutting off the Taiyoukai, she continued. “When I first read the scroll, I was devastated. Can you imagine the pain I went through? How I felt?” Sesshoumaru could only look up at her silently, not daring to interrupt her. He tried frantically to convey what he wanted to say with his eyes, but she seemed to ignore him for the most part. “Every time I leave myself open, expose myself, I get hurt. I’m always being used! Inuyasha used me as his shard detector. He didn’t love me, I was just necessary.”
“That is not true and you know it!” The Miko flinched at the Taiyoukai’s outburst. “He loved you! He didn’t love the undead miko.. He loved you. That baka only made it seem as though you were just a shard detector to hide his true feelings.” Sesshoumaru panted, surprised at his fervent words. Here he was, defending his dead brother. Kagome could only stare at him in shock. With a little shake of her head, she gave him a mirthless smile.
“Well, Inuyasha is all in the past now, isn’t he? Yes, now it is you who is using me. Don’t you understand, Sesshoumaru? Even if I do willingly mate with you, we’ll die.” With a little nod, she began to recite, “’If a Youkai and Miko with hearts tainted with doubt were to attempt to mate, their powers would fluctuate violently and result in death.’ Do you wish for your own death, Sesshoumaru?” Sesshoumaru shook his head angrily.
“Kagome! You are not just a means of increasing my power!! Kagome, I--” The miko cut him off once again.
“Even if I am!!” She smiled softly down at him. “Even if I am,” she repeated in a softer tone, “I would still risk my life.” Sesshoumaru grew slack at her words. “Even if you are just using me Sesshoumaru, I no longer care. Because.. I love you. And my love for you overrides everything else.” Giving him a real smile, she lifted her arms and let the magnolia in her hands drift down to him. Catching the blossom carefully, he stared down at the white petals, heart and mind racing.
“I arrived in this grove with a broken heart, clinging to the hurt and pain. But as soon as I stepped beneath the branches of this very tree, I felt all the doubt and pain and evil in my heart fade away. Instead of the hurt I once felt, all I felt was certainty.” Sesshoumaru looked up slowly, to see her patting the bark of the tree affectionately. “It was here that I realized I loved you.”
“Kagome...” The very last rays of the sun disappeared from the sky as the moon emerged from behind the treetops. As it slowly began its ascent into the sky, the moon cast its tranquil beams upon the two. “Kagome...”
“Shhh.” Sesshoumaru stared up at her hopelessly, looking quite vulnerable. Kagome only stared out at the sky, drumming her fingers on the branch she was seated upon. Finally, with one deep breath, she opened her mouth. But to Sesshoumaru’s surprise, she began to sing.

Sesshoumaru stared silently at her in awe. Somehow, this song seemed different from all the others. This time... It was directed at him. Meant for him. He felt his chest swell, and fought the urge to grab her and profess his love to her. Yes, that’s right. He, Sesshoumaru, Taiyoukai of the Western Lands, was in love with Kagome. Keeping still and silent, he listened as his love sang to him.

Sesshoumaru smiled at this verse. He found it ironic how she, the one with the qualities of a flower, sang about how blooming magnolias resembled him.

It was strange how different this song was from all the others. It was so much more intimate, and in a way, delicate. She even seemed different. The way she sang, the way she carried herself, her body language spoke volumes. She was really exposing herself to him.
Sesshoumaru shivered at her voice. It was so haunting... And yet so intimate, and dare he say it? Sensual. Her voice sort of just washed over him, like the gentle caress of moonlight. It wasn’t warm like sunlight, but cool and calm, tranquil even. And though it wasn’t warm, it ignited an intense fire within him.

As the last of her song faded into the night, she smiled serenely down at him before sliding off of the branch. Before her feet even touched the ground, an arm slithered around her waist and pulled her to a hard chest. Swirling sapphire depths stared into molten gold abysses as her small hands came up to rest on his broad shoulders. The hand that wasn’t holding her rose to place the magnolia he still held behind her ear. His hand lingered on her cheek, and she placed her own over his, smiling at him softly.

A pair of heavily-lashed eyes opened slowly to reveal deep, sapphire depths. Amidst the dark, swirling shades of blue, a distinctive sparkle flickered as a slow smile spread itself upon the Miko’s lips. Long, slender fingers gently cupped a white magnolia as a breeze blew raven tresses. Kagome looked up from the blossom she held, directing her gaze to the entrance of the grove. She could sense Sesshoumaru steadily approaching, his pace incredibly swift. He would arrive in only a few moments.XxxX
Sesshoumaru scowled at the dense line of trees ahead of him and increased his speed even more. With one smooth, fluid leap, he vaulted over the tree tops, momentarily hovering over the orchard he had leapt into. Clouds of white surrounded him, tinted gold by the setting sun. For a second, a smiling face flashed in his head; smooth, alabaster skin, twinkling gold eyes, and forehead adorned with a blue crescent moon, all framed by blue-tinted silver hair. His golden eyes widened a fraction as he recognized this grove to be the one he and his mother had visited daily during his childhood.Landing deftly in the thick grass, he looked up to the tallest magnolia tree, the one in the very center. His heart twinged as memories flooded his mind. He, as a pup, playing among the gnarled roots while his mother watched and laughed. Snuggled in the warm embrace of his mother as she sang to him. Kagome let out an amused breath as a silvery figure entered her line of vision. Her lips rose in a smile, and as he stepped beneath the shelter of the tree she sat in, her lips parted; revealing her gleaming teeth. The Taiyoukai stared up at her, regarding her with a strange look in his eyes. His golden orbs flickered with his emotions, and Kagome found herself too slow to keep up with them. Pulling an object from the folds of her sleeves as she stared at him, she tossed it down to the silver-haired Inu-Youkai. Catching the object deftly in one hand, he held her gaze steadily. Hesitantly, his eyes flickered the item he held. His eyes widened a fraction as he turned to look back up at the Miko in the tree.“I’ve read the scroll, Sesshoumaru.” Looking up at the branches above her, she stated in a matter-of-fact tone, “Should a Miko and Youkai of equal strength mate, their power would escalate to unparalleled heights.” Turning her gaze back to him, she gave him a knowing look. “You think of me as a means of strengthening your power?” Cutting off the Taiyoukai, she continued. “When I first read the scroll, I was devastated. -End Chapter-
A/N: Phew. This chapter actually took a lot out of me. I had an idea as to what I wanted, but I sort of messed it up. So this chapter isn't exactly up to my standards. What do you think?? As for chapter 19... I really want it to be perfect, so it might take a while. Besides, I need to find some *ahem, inspiration.. chehehe. But I promise you, chapter 19 will be.. cough, very entertaining. Btw, Magnolia no Joukei is a really great song. Go look it up!Magnolia no Joukei [View of Magnolias] by Rurutia
