My laptop's hard drive crashed and I lost all of the stories I was working on (and many plots I had written down), so I have gone back to writing everything down in a notebook. Hopefully I can post either a new chapter to my other stories or another short story here at least once a month.

A First Time For Everything

"It's Different Now" / "Coffee in Bed" - Pentatonix

Rin sat silently at the kitchen table, her pale hands wrapped tightly around the oversized coffee mug. Steam rose from the brim and it warmed her fingers as she watched her daughter running from one room to the other yelling and laughing as she was chased by their seemingly permanent guest. Sesshomaru manipulated his way into their lives after Rin's accident and now she was uncertain of how she felt. Everyone he had a claim to the four-year-old child, she was his after all; however, Rin had become so used to doing things on her own. She never before shared her daughter with anyone and now--well, now she did not really have any choice.

Sesshomaru all but moved himself back into the home Rin shared with their daughter and for the first few weeks, it had been awkward and tested the patience of both adults. The worst part wasn't how strange it was having Sesshomaru there, it was how quickly he seemed to assimilate into the daily routine. It was as if he had always been there. Then there were all the feelings that Rin couldn't get rid of. Sesshomaru's presence invoked emotions and feelings Rin wasn't sure she was ready to acknowledge. Since the first night, feeling those lips on her body, Rin refused to allow the two of them to get that close again. if she wasn't ready to deal with the emotional feelings she had for Se4sshomaru, she definitely wasn't ready to deal with the sexual ones.

Taking a sip from the mug in her hands, Rin let her gaze follow the man in question. He was everything she remembered him to be, dependable calculating irritating, but now he was so much more. He was more expressive, more doting, and Rin did not know what to think. His long silver hair was pulled back and plaited into a tight braid, his swirling amber eyes oddly focusing as he helped their daughter put on her socks and shoes. He looked softened and tender, almost fatherly.

The Sesshomaru before her was one she had only dared to dream about when they were together. Some fantasy come to life and it usually left her wondering if she was actually stuck in a dream world. This couldn't be real, could it? He confused her, she couldn't trust what was in front of her. Rin was too afraid to allow herself to believe and find herself disappointed and heartbroken later. Somehow she had to shield both her daughter's and her own heart from the tsunami that was the Sesshomaru she remembered.

"Rin?" Sesshomaru's deep voice interrupted her thoughts and she glanced up uneasily at the six-foot-tall man now standing beside her.

"Hmmm?" She took another sip of the tea in her mug trying in vain to reorganize her thoughts.

"Are you sure you don't want to come with us?" His hand came up to her face, his fingertips brushing the stray hair from her face and tucking them gently behind her left ear.

"I--" he stepped closer into her personal space to where she could feel the radiating heat of his body brushing against hers and warming places on her that it shouldn't be. "Yes. You and Akane need this time together to get to know each other."

"What about you?" Rin could feel her cheeks flush as Sesshomaru scalded her with his sharp gaze.

"I'll be fine," her mouth had gone horribly dry and she felt her teeth worrying on her lower lip. If he didn't leave4 soon Rin was afraid she would make an absolute fool of herself. "Miroku will be here shortly so I will not be alone, I promise."

"Just Miroku?"

"As far as I know," Rin heard the front door open and Akane's excited shout, as well as a male's hushed voice, laughing.

Placing her mug on the table, Rin slid herself from the chair. Sesshomaru's hands touched her hips gently, attempting to stabilize her and she felt her breath catch as his fingers flexed, pulling her flush against him. Her heart was beating frantically, her hands gripping his shirt as he leaned down and captured her lips with his. Rin felt the sudden intake of breath from his chest as if he wasn't expecting his own response and it made her want more than just his lips on her. His hold on her tightened as he deepened the kiss, his tongue swiping against her lips and then into her mouth as she gave in to his silent request. Her resolve was constantly being tested by him and with each stolen embrace or kiss it was diminishing her will into a puddle of goop. Soon she would be nothing more than malleable flesh in his arms, eager and ready for any and all of his whims.

Large hands glided over her jaw, cupping the back of her head and she felt the moan leave her lips before she could stop it. His kisses should have been illegal, the taste of his lips forbidden and her body shuddered in pleasure as Sesshomaru pulled away, his breath hot against her face. All she wanted to do was lift herself onto her tiptoes and bring him back to her mouth and make him feel as bewildered and needy as she felt. He made her feel out of control.

"Well," a familiar voice pulled Rin from her train of thought and her cheeks flushed a deeper red as Sesshomaru kissed her lips again. This kiss was although, was just a faint brush before pulling away completely, his amber eyes dark with emotions that Rin knew could only mean trouble.

rin watched as Sesshomaru and their daughter Akane left, enthusiastically waving to them as the new arrival made his way to her. His blue eyes sparkled with mischief, his grin extending to the maximum capability on either side of his pale cheeks. His silk shirt matched the color of his eyes and hung open exposing the plain white t-shirt underneath, his black slacks expensive, but cut to fit his long legs. She admired his good looks like one would an older brother and his chuckle was soft as they embraced in a tight hug.

"How are you feeling?" He asked stepping into the kitchen to fix himself his own cup of tea.

"Okay I guess," her words sounded like a lie even to her ears, and Rin could only shrug her shoulders catching Miroku's skeptical glare.

"That kiss looked more than just okay Rin," he seated himself across from Rin, a plate of cookies clinking o the table as the man before her set it down. the blush on her cheeks was beginning to seep down her neck and feel permanent and she shoved a cookie in her mouth in an attempt to gather her thoughts. Something that before her accident hadn't seemed as impossible.

"It's not what it looks like," she replied around another cookie, avoiding the look on Miroku's face.

"Oh?" his voice rose a few octaves and Rin squirmed in her seat. "Then tell me Rin, what is it?"

That was the million-dollar question, wasn't it? Rin had been wracking her brain for weeks trying to figure out what Sesshomaru's angle was. The man hadn't quite been forthcoming with his intent, not when it came to Rin and she was almost afraid of asking him directly. What if this was a game to him? What if it was his way of punishing her for not telling him when she found out she was pregnant? She had experienced first hand his family's tit-for-tat mentality and what if when she gave in he pulled the rug from underneath her and left?

Did she think Sesshomaru was capable of such cruelty? Five years ago, maybe. Now? She wasn't willing to take the gamble, not when their daughter could end up hurt as well. Rin would do anything to keep those emotional scars from Akane and she could only hope that Sesshomaru was mindful of that if he was trying to punish Rin.

"Oh hell Miroku, I don't know!" Rin hid her head in her arms and sighed heavily. "I'm so freaking confused."

"Tell me what's going on," he said softly, his large hand touching her shoulder and squeezing briefly. "You can trust me with anything."

She knew she could trust him, that wasn't what was holding her back. Rin was afraid of the lack of control she felt where Sesshomaru was concerned. He'd been there for her since she was hospitalized, had picked up the reigns of her life, and kept everything running smoothly. He helped out with chores, something she never known for him to do. She knew he was very independent and self-sufficient, but in the past, he had always hired maids and housekeepers to keep everything nice and tidy.

Now he simply rolled up his sleeves and put himself to work without having to be directed. It was eye-opening and most times Rin was at a loss for words. Sesshomaru was showing himself capable of being a shoulder she could lean on and though he had always been a dependable man, it hadn't been on an emotional level and Rin was finding herself falling for the quiet and stubborn man.

Rin poured her heart out to Miroku, catching him up to all the happenings since Sesshomaru waltzed his way back into her life. She spoke about her fears and how gentle Sesshomaru was. How he was taking care of them and endearing himself to their daughter. Everything came pouring out of her and a few times she had to pause in her narrative until a panic attack subsided. All the bottled-up feelings from their breakup, the dark feelings from her pregnancy, and even things she wasn't aware of spilled out onto the table between her and Miroku, and when she finished Rin felt exhausted not only psychically but down to her very soul.

Taking a few deep calming breaths, Rin glanced at the clock on the microwave, surprised with how much time had passed as she unloaded. Sesshomaru and Akane would be returning within the hour and she hadn't done anything besides talk and nurse the now cold tea. She was disappointed in herself that she let the day get away from her. however, it had been a long time since she had voiced her deepest thoughts out loud, let alone to another person.

"Wow," Miroku's fingers ran through his shaggy ebony hair. "Just wow."

"What do you think I should do?" She was too scared to trust her own thoughts and desperately needed his advice.

"I think you should tell Sesshomaru everything you told me." Rin knew what he was saying was the right thing to do, but a big

part of her was almost too scared to try.

"Maybe," she said instead, sitting up and tugging at the strands of her hair. "Pizza for dinner?"

*** *** ***

Sesshomaru sighed heavily wiping his hands on a dishtowel before replacing it over the handle of the oven. It had been a long day and he felt exhausted in a good way. Akane was a force to be reckoned with, a well of limitless energy and he often wondered how Rin was able to keep up with the small child on her own for so long. Kagome was the one who suggested taking Akane to the zoo and Sesshomaru agreed it had been a good idea, although his cheeks and nose would be slightly pink from the mild sunburn for the next week or so.

Akane dragged him everywhere she could, her voice chiming endlessly on the different types of animals and her loud shrieks of joy when they ended up in the small petting zoo area. Never before did Sesshomaru understand how quickly the price tag for such an adventure could escalate to and though his wallet was significantly lighter it was worth it. They were bonding, creating priceless memories and his heart ached when Akane had held his hand during most of the day, squeezing his fingers in childish glee. the only way the day could have been any better was if Rin had joined them.

There would be time for that in the future, he reminded himself while turning off the kitchen light. Rin hadn't kicked him to the curb yet and that's all that mattered to him. What they had now Sesshomaru wouldn't quite call it a relationship, but it was becoming something real to the both of them. Since the night of Rin's release, they had not been together, sexually, that is, Sesshomaru was willing to take it to the next level, but he was hesitant.

He wasn't sure if they were ready to sleep together carnally and he was grateful now that Akane interrupted them that night. He wanted to do right by Rin and Akane, wanted to show them that he belonged with them and he did not want to rush anything. Sesshomaru picked up the toys littering the living room and placed them in their bins, straightening up the room as he went.

It was a funny feeling, this domestic routine he found himself adapting to, one he was fulling enjoying. His childhood wasn't a bad one by far, but it had been difficult for him to adapt going from being an only child to his father remarrying and having another child. He had to admit that his stepmother was a very gentle creature and though Sesshomaru was not good with sharing his feelings, he respected her.

It crushed their family when she suddenly passed away and it changed the dynamic, twisting it to something slightly toxic. Nothing was able to stay the same and they may have been functional and somewhat civil, but there was always lingering bitterness. Sesshomaru did not want that for Rin and himself. He wanted to do better by her and their child. They deserved as much.

Light drifted through the curtains and curiously Sesshomaru glanced out the blinds into the darkness on the street. A familiar car parked on the curb, the headlights turning off ad the sound of the engine died. He searched his memory of who it belonged to and noted that though it wasn't terribly late, it was still late enough that unannounced visitors were frowned upon.

"Everything okay?" Rin's voice fluttered into his ears and he straightened his spine as he recognized the visitor.

"Kohaku is here," Sesshomaru turned from the window and went to Rin's side noting the way her eyes widened in surprise.

"What?" her eyes followed his movements, her cheeks turning bright pink as she blushed from the close proximity of their bodies.

"Don't worry," his voice was low and gruff, almost a soft growl. "I'll take care of it. Go ahead and get ready for bed. I'll be back shortly."

"Are you sure?" her hand brushed against his arm as he lowered his head, his lips brushing hers in a quick chaste kiss.

It took all of his strength not to deepen the kiss, to keep his body still as he felt hers melt against him. She would easily give in to him and Sesshomaru wanted it almost desperately. Pulling away slightly, he smiled feeling Rin's first instinct was to try and close the distance, chasing him. His lower half responded immediately and if Kohaku hadn't shown up Sesshomaru would have allowed their embrace to continue.

"Yes, go."

Sesshomaru waited until Rin retreated to her bedroom to go to the front door. Kohaku wasn't quite to the porch and Sesshomaru closed the front door behind himself, taking a few large steps to cut off the approaching man. Kohaku wasn't especially tall, the brunette was maybe a few inches taller than Rin's five-foot four-inch stature, but he strode forward as if he would loom over the taller man. Brown eyes were narrowed and the younger man took on an aggressive stance in front of Sesshomaru, well-toned arms crossing over his chest as he stopped.

"It's a bit late to be dropping by unannounced," Sesshomaru was not intimidated by Kohaku and he leaned against the small standing wall that wrapped around the front of the house, showing Kohaku he did not post a threat to Sesshomaru in the slightest.

"Where's Rin?" Kohaku spat.

"None of your business," the two of them had a mutual dislike for each other, and though they behaved when in Rin's presence, Sesshomaru only wished Kohaku would become angry enough to try and challenge him. Violence wasn't something Sesshomaru condoned, but for Kohaku, he would make an exception.

"Bullshit!" Kohaku took a step closer to him and Sesshomaru merely raised his eyebrows.

"Why are you here Kohaku?" Sesshomaru kept his tone cold and to the point, keeping himself in check but alert for any situation that arose.

"You don't belong here Sesshomaru!"

"Hmmm," he picked imaginary dirt from underneath his nails, ignoring the previous statement. The man in front of him was seething and it gave Sesshomaru intense pleasure.

Kohaku had been an irritating thorn in his side when Rin and Sesshomaru dated previously. His was one of her closest friends, but the younger man wasn't accepting of the role he'd been given. He did not want to only be Rin's close friend, yet was too afraid to try and change it until she became involved with Sesshomaru. Rin was adamant that there was nothing between the two of them and it was obvious to everyone else Rin was not interested. Kohaku was the persistent type.

Sesshomaru was surprised Kohaku did not slip himself right into place next to Rin when the two of them had split all those years ago. It was the perfect opportunity and it was a festering thought that he could make Rin happier than Sesshomaru himself had been able to. Five years later and Kohaku was no closer to Rin and the thought that Kohaku had tried and failed to take his place made Sesshomaru extremely smug.

"You don't deserve her!" Kohaku growled angrily, his finger extended pointing at Sesshomaru, not quite touching him. "You abandoned her and I was there to pick up the pieces!"

"Give it up Kohaku," Sesshomaru stood up to his full height, towering over Kohaku. It was time the younger man learned his place. "The choice is hers and hers alone. She doesn't want you, accept it."

"NO!"

"Pathetic," Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes to glare at the man in front of him and Kohaku retreated a step. "You don't get a say in the matter. Rin is the mother of my child. There is nothing you can do to get rid of me. You had a chance and I'm guessing she rejected you. If you continue to show up like this and play your childish games I will end you."

"You can't do anything to me!"

"Get in my way again and I will show you exactly what I am capable of Kohaku. This is your only warning." Sesshomaru turned his back on the man and strode to the front door. He turned the knob and opened the door, sparing a heated glance over his shoulder. "Now leave before I am forced to call the police."

Sesshomaru didn't wait for a response, he closed the door behind himself and locked it, heading to the guest room he was staying in and undressing. He felt good, almost giddy from the altercation and he was curious to see what Kohaku's next move would be. Part of him wanted the man-child to throw a tantrum and refuse to back down. Then Sesshomaru could crush him; however, a bigger part of him simply wanted Kohaku to disappear into the background.

Rin did not need the drama, nor the headache that it could bring. Maybe it was further proof that Sesshomaru had grown emotionally over the last few years. Maybe it was the evidence Rin needed in order to give them another chance. Dressing for bed, Sesshomaru tossed his clothes into the hamper and performed his nightly ritual of brushing his teeth and hair, pulling the long strands into a tight braid. Turning off the bedroom light he saw the light coming from down the hallway. Curious, he followed the light to Rin's room, the door was wide open and he watched Rin from the doorway.

She looked tiny from her spot in the middle of the large bed, her back propped up with pillows. Her eyebrows were scrunched together, her vision engrossed in the paperback book in her hands, one of which was secured in a brace. Sesshomaru felt his pulse quicken from the sight and heat pool in his stomach. She looked beautiful.

"Knock knock," he said softly, drawing her attention immediately, the book set down and promptly forgotten.

"Sesshomaru," his name sounded breathless coming from her lips and it jolted his lower half, filling it with need and desire to hear her say his name again.

"May I?" he motioned his hand in front of himself asking for permission to enter her room.

"Y-yes," her hands patted the blankets over her lap then smoothing out the thick material. "Yes, please come in."

"Thank you, Rin."

"What

did Kohaku want?" She asked hesitantly, her eyes watching Sesshomaru as he slipped past the threshold and into the room.

"Nothing important," he stopped at the side of her bed, staring down at her wide eyes, her full lips parting slightly.

"Oh-okay," she was doing things to him and Sesshomaru suddenly wanted to lay everything out on the table for the woman in front of him. 'is there something you needed?"

"May I sit?" Rin nodded and scooted over as he sat down on the mattress, resisting taking the hand next to him into his own.

"What's on your mind?"

"You," the words came out before he could stop them.

"M-me?" the moment felt extremely awkward and Rin's face and neck were turning a dark shade of red.

"I think we should talk about what's going on here." How did one start a conversation like this without sounding like a complete idiot? He wasn't used to putting his personal thoughts on display but did not think Rin would be the one to make the first move.

"I don't know if I want to," Rin pulled the blankets up to her chest immediately avoiding his gaze.

"Why?" Sesshomaru turned his entire body to face her. She was cowering away from him, her shoulders huddled as if waiting for a blow he knew would never come.

"Because," her teeth pulled on her bottom lip, her hand subconsciously pulling the loose strands of her hair behind her ear. She was putting herself on the defensive and given a chance he knew she would bolt like a scared animal. "Because it'll change everything."

"Is that so bad?" Sesshomaru reached for Rin, his hand sliding across her jaw and pulling her head up so she could look at him. He wante3d to see what was going on in those expressive eyes, wanted her to truly see him.

"Yes," her voice was barely above a whisper and he had to strain his ears to catch her words. "Because I want us."

Sesshomaru's body reacted quicker than his mind possibly could. One moment he was sitting next to Rin staring down at her and the next his lips were on hers, devouring her. Her gasp filled his mouth and he took advantage, his hands tugging her body until it was flush with his own. A fire erupted under his skin, heat escaping from his pores ad Rin responded in kind. Clothing was pulled off frantically, tossed wherever and Sesshomaru struggled to breathe. Rin was everywhere, her spicy scent overwhelming him in a way he did not think possible.

Her quiet gaps and incoherent moans fueled him further trying to wrench louder versions from his own mouth. He touched and tasted her exposed flesh, his tongue teasing her until she was at the brink of madness. Her nails clawed at his shoulders, scratched at his back sending shivers down his spine. She was pure ecstasy. Sesshomaru took all that Rin offered him and still he asked for more, feeling her surrounding him, her muscles tensing and squeezing him.

She made him feel powerful, wild and his name was a constant chant from her mouth, his hips grinding against her pelvis as she came. He continued his pace, erratic--almost manic and when his release came, it felt like a part of him died. Panting heavily, Sesshomaru kisse4d Rin's neck, his teeth scraping the sweat-slicked skin and he moaned tiredly collapsing next to her. Exhaustion clung to him and a smile slipped across his face as Rin's body turned, curling around his, her head resting on his heaving chest.

"I want us too," he whispered into her hair as he allowed his body to rest.

Things weren't perfect and that was okay, he did not want perfection. Sesshomaru wanted a second chance, wanted to be there for Akane as her father. He wanted to be there for Rin, in any capacity she needed. Together they could build a relationship that they could have had in the past, but this time he would do things better.

Together they would be better, they just had to be brave enough to take the first step.

E/N: I was really trying a different writing style here, hopefully expanding it. As always, please leave a review (good or bad) for me before you leave. I have a few odd-ball stories floating around that I am trying to get down on paper so hopefully I will have more soon!
