Chapter 2
The Poison Muck Monster and the Determination of a Hanyou.
"KAGOME!"
Inuyasha's cry repeated through her mind.
Kagome's soul was being crushed, her body torn, pain laced through her till she wanted to scream. Her lips parted but no sound escaped. Blackness covered her sight and then there was nothing.
Inuyasha leapt from the path of the poison muck and flew at the monster, unsheathing his Tetsaiga. Anger pulsated through his veins.
`How dare he hurt Kagome! How dare he touch her!' Inuyasha's inner demon screamed with rage.
Inuyasha thrust his Tetsaiga down onto the monster who diminished into muck, Kagome's bloodied muck covered body falling into the water.
Inuyasha dove after her, swimming with all his might to reach her. `Kagome…don't leave me…I still need to tell you…' Inuyasha's soul cried into the water.
The muck got under his eyelids and into his lungs as he swam further into the water.
Suddenly, he saw her body sinking. Muck was washing off her, but it was still caked on her body. `Kagome!' Inuyasha grabbed her and swam upwards, holding her close to his chest. His lungs felt like they were on fire. Muck was everywhere. The surface was so far…he couldn't make it. `For Kagome…do it to save Kagome..'
His determination did not fail and he burst from the water, muck flying.
"Inuyasha!" Shippo cried from the shore as Miroku swam out to them, giving Inuyasha part of his robes to wash the muck from his face. Miroku didn't dare move to try and take Kagome from Inuyasha's arms as they slowly swam through the murky water to the shore. Inuyasha set Kagome down on the grass and tore his haori from his body and wrapped Kagome in it. Even if it was wet, she was covered until they could reach their site again. Hopefully, they would find an abandoned building in which they could rest and Kagome could recover. Sango brought over Kagome's clothes and shooed the protective Inuyasha away while she mostly dressed the wounded and unconscious Kagome. Kirara let out a soft growl of worry as she carried Shippo over to them.
"Kirara, you and Shippo scan the area. See if you can find any village or building where we can reside for a while," Miroku voiced the thoughts of Inuyasha as he worriedly watched Sango's back. Sango wrung Inuyasha's haori out then recovered Kagome in it.
"Inuyasha, you will have to carry her back to the fire. She needs to be warmed…but be careful…I don't know how wounded she is…" Sango instructed a very obedient Inuyasha.
He slowly picked her up and carried her in his arms, her head cradled into his chest. Sango noticed the love and pure worry in his eyes as he looked down at her. Shippo and Kirara took off into the sky, startling Sango, and she took Miroku by the sleeve and they made their way back to camp.
Miroku and Sango had gone off looking for more firewood as Inuyasha had laid Kagome down next to the fire. He sat next to her, watching her, seeing her pain and hating the fact he couldn't do anything about it.
"Oh Kagome…I'm so sorry I couldn't have been there sooner…" Inuyasha whispered, his eyes shifting. Kagome twitched in her unconscious state and her face twisted in pain. Inuyasha, torn by his pain at seeing her hurt, laid down beside her, pulling her into his body. "I'm so sorry…Kagome…"
Kagome suddenly felt so warm and peaceful. The pain in her arm and chest almost melted away. She slowly became aware of what she felt, and realized she was being held closely by someone. Words whispered above her, in her ear…what did they say?
"I'm so sorry….Kagome….please be okay….I…I would die to save you from pain…I…I need to tell you the words I've whispered out of your earshot, or in your ear while you slept…I need to tell you to your heart….Kagome, please give me the chance to…" Inuyasha's grip tightened around her and his cheek pressed against hers. Wetness rolled onto her skin.
"Inu…yasha?" Kagome barely was able to voice. Inuyasha's grip loosened and she saw his watery eyes studying her face.
"Kagome…where are you hurt?" Inuyasha changed the subject, a little embarrassed that she might have heard what he said.
"My arm…and my chest…I can't move my fingers…" Kagome coughed up some water. Inuyasha laid her on her unwounded side, and, moving the coverings, checked her arm. It was bruised, but not broken, thankfully. He reached under the side of her shirt and lightly felt her ribs. Kagome's cheeks colored, but she knew he was just trying to see if anything was broken. His fingered traced over her stomach, his nails lightly tickling her. Was he teasing her?
Inuyasha couldn't help himself. For so long he wanted to touch her skin, to feel her body in his grasp, to be able to touch her everywhere. All the more noticeable as human, he tried to ignore it as a half-demon, but this time, he could barely contain himself. He wasn't like Miroku, he kept reminding himself. Her sides felt bruised, and maybe a small fracture of one of her bottom ribs, but mostly, she had little cuts that would heal quickly.
Miroku's throat cleared behind them and Inuyasha jumped, his hands bulting from under her shirt.
"Stop doing that Miroku!" Inuyasha growled.
"Well…you wouldn't mind so much if you didn't have your hands up Kagome's shirt."
<SMACK><SMACK><Kick> Sango and Inuyasha book-cased his head with their backhands and Shippo, having now returned, kicked him in the shin.
"Be nice! Inuyasha was just checking for broken bones!" Shippo insisted. Kagome colored. Shippo was there the whole time?
"Did you find any place?" Sango asked, dropping the fire wood next to the fire. Shippo nodded.
"There is a little hut not too far from here, that way," Shippo said, pointing away from the river area. Sango nodded and started to pick up camp.
-Later…
Inuyasha sat by Kagome's feet while Sango rubbed some herbal medicine goo onto Kagome's ribs.
Inuyasha diverted his eyes from the sight, had he seen her skin…Shaking the thought from his head, he refused to let that take hold of him. It was bad enough he could constantly smell every part of her body.
"I need to go get more," Sango sighed. "Shippo, where was that clover patch you found these in before?" Shippo tried to explain while he, Kilala, and Sango left the little hut. Miroku was outside and the sound of Sango and Miroku talking melted into the hut.
"Miroku…Don't you DARE! Just go get more firewood. We're going to be here for a while." Sango tried to whisper, but Inuyasha heard. His ears twitched as the groups went off away from the hut.
Kagome was sleeping on the little bed on the floor. Inuyasha's eyes finally made their way back to study her sleeping form. Her breath was coming easier, finally. The medicine must have been working it's magic. Inuyasha's eyes drifted to his knees, and he noticed her bare feet were sticking out of the blanket she was under. Sudden worry filled his mind and he scooted closer so he could cover her feet. Pulling her legs up onto his knee, he covered her feet with his hands. The blanket fell back, revealing her legs to him. His cheeks reddened at the sight of her soft skin.
"Bad boy.." Inuyasha muttered and quickly recovered her legs.
"Inu…yasha…" Kagome whispered in her sleep. Inuyasha stared at her. What could she possibly be dreaming of?
"Kagome…Please…don't be in pain anymore…" Inuyasha whispered, shifting so he could lay beside her and cradle her head in his arm. She rolled into him and nuzzled into his chest.
"I…love you…" Kagome whispered almost too silently…almost.
