~Chapter 1~Broken Vows~

~An arrow…pulsing with a pink light, full of energy…is it mine? No-I'm not the one holding it. Then who? And what is it aiming for? Why do I feel like this?~

Kagome woke up with a start, cold sweat covering her whole body. She looked around her, realizing she was still at their camp, Sango and Miroku sleeping near the fire. Kirara and Shippou curled against each other for warmth. And her…in her sleeping bag underneath the tree where "he" sleeps. She looks up…and sees the hanyou. Her eyes softened as she traced every bit of plane and angle on his face. "He looks so peaceful and so innocent while sleeping," she thought. His eyes were closed, lips slightly parted in slumber. She smiled ever so slightly, then she suddenly remembered her dream. Or dreams to be exact. "It's still the same dream, it just keeps on repeating. In bits and pieces. I don't even know why I'm dreaming about it. Or why I see "him" there…standing against a tree, holding his sword. He's staring at something lying on the ground…but I can't see what it is. The dream doesn't complete itself. What does it mean?"

She suddenly felt the need for a walk. In her frustration, she hadn't noticed that her movements caused Inuyasha to wake up. Suddenly feeling someone behind her, she turned around only to find herself held within Inuyasha's arms. "What's wrong, Kagome?" Inuyasha asked, while stroking her back with gentle motions. She buried her face in his robe, taking in his scent. She knew that he sensed her anxiety and fear; she could never hide anything from him for very long. "Damn those superhuman senses of his," she thought she struggled inwardly to `throw him of the scent', so to speak. "Nothing's wrong, Inuyasha. Really. I'm fine," she said. The hanyou was not convinced. He pulled her back into his arms completely, and before Kagome could argue, he was sprinting to the limb he was sleeping on earlier. "Inuyasha!" Kagome scolded, a touch of panic seeping into her warning tone of voice. Inuyasha cringed at that, knowing full well that she wouldn't hesitate to say the `S-word'. In desperation, he cupped his hand over her mouth to stop her speech. "Cease your prattling, woman! Do you want everyone else to wake up in the dead of night!? Sheesh!" And then he remembered the panic in her voice. "Don't worry, bitch. I'll be here to catch you…I won't even let you fall," he said; just to reassure her as he resumed his rubbing of her back. "I know that there's something bothering you. I've felt it for almost a week now. Why won't you tell me?" "It's nothing, Inuyasha. I just had a bad dream, that's all. I'm ok now," came the muffled reply. Inuyasha turns her into his hold so that her back was against his chest with her sitting in his lap. He wrapped both arms around her and tucked her feet in his own to keep her completely warm. She was good and trapped…and they both knew it.

"It feels so good, having her in my embrace like this…so right," Inuyasha thought. Kagome was blushing furiously though she can't deny the happiness that surged in her heart just by being held by him. "Thank God he can't see my face! Gosh, but I feel so loved and protected by Inuyasha…how I wish this could be true." Inuyasha put his chin on top of her head, nuzzling it in the process. She gave a soft mewl of contentment and he couldn't help the answering grin spreading all over his face. "So tell me about the dream. What happened in there?" "I really don't remember anymore. I just know it's frightening…" Kagome said in a lame excuse. "I think you're worried about Naraku, about the battle," he said. And it was true. The jewel was almost complete now. With a stroke of pure luck, they managed to get half of it while the other half remained in Naraku's hands. Kagome played with the Shikon she wore around her neck. "The final battle…yes, it will be soon. I can feel it. It cannot be evaded any longer. Are the dreams I'm having about it then? Is something terrible going to happen to us? Oh God, I hate it when I don't know!" she thought as she clenched her fist tight to hold the jewel in her grasp. "Kagome?" said Inuyasha. "Damn, I hate it when she's afraid. The smell of her fear is suffocating," he thought.

"Bitch, I want you to listen to me. I don't want you to be afraid anymore. It upsets me. I promise you that nothing will happen to you while we're fighting that bastard of a youkai Naraku. I will protect you at all costs, even with my life…" Inuyasha vowed solemnly, unconsciously holding her against him more tightly, almost possessively. Kagome's heart quickened at the words she heard, but as soon as the joy came, sadness fast replaced it. "Another broken vow…promising me his life when Kikyou owns it," she thinks, feeling grief consume her. "You cannot promise me your life when it's already pledged to someone else," Kagome said quietly, causing the hanyou to spasm in his hold against her in surprise. "And this is my fight too, just like everyone else. So there's no need to protect me. I'll take care of myself. Besides, I wouldn't want you to risk your life just to save me. If I die, then I'll die," she continued. "Please don't let anything happen to him, especially if it's just because of me. I couldn't live with myself after that…" Kagome fervently prayed in her mind. "What are you saying, bitch!? Do you really want to fucking die? And as to what you're telling me, I can't allow for that to happen. You're MY responsibility, and I will protect you. Understand me!?" the hanyou said angrily, masking the flash of fear that went right thru him just by thinking of Kagome dead. "No more of her wonderful smiles so full of life; her beautiful expressive eyes forever closed in death…I can't bear it! Nor could I imagine life without her…" Inuyasha thought desperately. At this dialogue of his, the spitfire in his arms struggled violently to look at him, eyes flashing. "I am not yours! Therefore, I am NOT your responsibility. I am responsible for myself, and I do not belong to anyone else but ME. Do not make promises you and I both know you can't keep. You don't even love me, so you don't have to feel obligated towards me. You love her, and therefore you belong with each other. You're HERS, Inuyasha. Bound to her by your own words. And after we defeat Naraku, go to Hell with Kikyou for all I care! Just don't play with me and let me hope for something that just isn't there or is not just going to happen!" Kagome shouted furiously, though she wanted to take her words back when she saw the dejected look in Inuyasha's face. "But it has to be said. I have to face the truth. He'll leave me for her. He doesn't really love me. I just remind him of Kikyou…" Kagome thought bitterly. Inuyasha's eyes were opened wide, then began to clench tightly closed while lowering his head. Without a word, he lifted Kagome up and leaped down the tree to place her in her sleeping bag.

Then he walked away…
