“Pappa!” Rin cheered happily as she bounded into Sesshoumaru's bed waking the youkai as she pounced on him landing on his stomach.

A soft grunted `oof' was heard from the previously sleeping youkai and his golden eyes fell upon the girl sitting on his stomach. Her weight was slight and not generally a bother to him, but with the way she woke him that morning it was as though his own brother had pounced on him.

“Rin,” he greeted and huffed a soft chuckle when she smiled brightly and giggled before falling over onto his chest to hug him.

“Morning,” she said cheerily her spirits high and exuberant in the early morning.

He knew from past experience that her high and hyper mood would last all day until she fell into an exhausted but happy sleep come nightfall. Sesshoumaru smiled at the happy child, glad that she was once again able to move freely and silently thanking his brother for healing her feet. Having not lived the same life his brother had, the thought of licking her wounds hadn't come to him as more than an instinct that he tried to ignore due to his refined status. When his brother had closed her wounds with his own tongue and saliva though, he knew that perhaps his brother had grown up learning more about being a inu from having to live by his own instincts just to survive. Perhaps his brother was the better youkai in some ways.

“We're going to go see Mamma today right?” she asked happily as she rolled off Sesshoumaru and onto the bed practically jumping upon it in her excitement.

“Who is mamma Rin?” he asked though knowing the answer.

“Kagome-sama is Mamma,” she answered as she rose to stand on her hands and knees and bounced on the bed reminding Sesshoumaru of a inu puppy, all she seemed to be lacking was a tail.

“When did you come to think of her as your mother Rin?” he asked as he rolled onto his side and propped himself up on his elbow.

“Do you remember when Rin got lost last summer?” she asked as she sat on her bottom, her legs bent and her knees drawn close to her chest, her hands on the bed between her feet. Sesshoumaru nodded his head silently. “Kagome found Rin and kept Rin safe while Sesshoumaru-pappa found Rin. She said that she didn't know if I would ever have one, but that she could be Rin's mother if Rin wanted and Rin wanted.”

Sesshoumaru looked at her and smiled inwardly at the beauty in both his pup's and his future mate's spirits. Reaching out an arm he wrapped it around Rin's waist and dragged the girl toward him quickly, rolling her onto his back as he tickled her causing the tiny human girl to screech in happy laughter.

“Oi! Do you mind?” Inuyasha said as he stepped into his brother's room, his puppy ears flattened back against his head.

Rin looked up when Sesshoumaru stopped in his tickling and seeing Inuyasha's puppy ears stand up and twitch about she squealed again and bounced across the bed to stand next to him on the mattress. The small human child bit her bottom lip as she stretched her arms up and leaned against the yawning hanyou as she reached her hands up to touch his velvety silky soft ears.

As Inuyasha's yawn was coming to a close, he felt the tiny hands touch his ears and looked at the girl through narrowed eyes. A snort came from the hanyou as he rolled his golden eyes. What was it with women and his ears? Smirking at his brother Sesshoumaru could barely control the twitching of his lips, the slight curling up of the corners of his mouth signifying his inner laughter.

“Aww shuddup,” Inuyasha groused and then hefted the small child over his shoulder. “We're going to go get the others up, you need to get a bath,” he said and twitched his nose walking out of the room and shutting the door in time to hear the dull `flop' of a pillow hitting the wood.

“Pappa doesn't smell bad, he just smells like he normally does,” Sesshoumaru could hear Rin's cheery voice say as his brother carried her down the hall.

“That's my point kid,” he heard his brother answer back and chuckled silently.

Sesshoumaru stood from his bed with a wide yawn and stretched his arms up high to the ceiling. Finishing the yawn and morning stretch he decided to forego the bath and simply donned his haori and hakama and brushed his hair. He loved his long hair though sometimes it was a pain to brush through. Oh there were hardly ever any tangles but there were times he thought the need to be double jointed just to get through all of it.

He let a small smile break past his mask of indifference as he thought about how much enjoyment Rin seemed to gain from the simple action of brushing his long locks. The grin turned into a soft chuckle as he remembered the time that he had fallen asleep while she was brushing his hair, only to wake up and find that not only had she gotten done brushing it, but she had put it into several thin braids and in those braids were several small white and blue flowers. Well, he thought, at least there weren't any pink blossoms.

He exited his chambers and stepped into the hall as he made his way down to Sango and Miroku's chambers. Coming down the hall he was glad to hear that the taijiya had fully recovered from her poison induced illness. He still needed to talk to that youkai about that. Her voice was soft but firm and he listened as he came closer.

“Kimigra-sama-”

“Please Sango, just Kimigra is fine,” the inuyoukai said and as he drew nearer he could see the youkai holding Sango's hands in his own and she trying to pull away without making it forceful.

“Kimigra-sama, I don't think of you like that. You are a valiant warrior yes, but-”

“Lady Sango you will make me a fine mate. You have absorbed and become immune to my poison, there is nothing standing in our way.”

“You're not listening,” she said as she tried to pull her hands away again. “I don't think of you like that. My heart belongs to another.”

“Who is my opponent for your affections?” he asked his voice soft as he looked into her mocha eyes. A sudden snarl came from his throat and a flash of red lit his eyes, “It's the damn monk isn't it?”

“What are you?” she began as he pulled away from her suddenly and moved toward the door to Miroku's chambers.

“His scent is all over you. He has no right,” he snarled.

“No! Whatever it is you are planning you cannot harm him!” she said as she tried to stop him by grabbing his arm.

“Release me Sango,” he growled his eyes never leaving the monk's door.

“Not until you back away,” she said forcibly.

Sango suddenly found herself flung away violently and would have fallen to the floor and hit it hard had it not been for Sesshoumaru catching her in his arms against his chest. Righting the taijiya on his feet and making sure she had her balance, Sesshoumaru stepped away and grabbed Kimigra by the back of his neck with his hand, a clear hold of domination among dogs.

“You will speak with me now,” Sesshoumaru growled low as he led the youkai from the hall, his face a mask of empty emotion though his eyes burned with rage.

Sesshoumaru flung the inuyoukai into his study not noticing that his brother had followed along after leaving Rin in Sango and Miroku's care. The hanyou had slipped into the room after his brother and stood against the wall near the door as he watched the happenings.

“You have no right in this!” Kimigra shouted at Sesshoumaru, red still tingeing the edges of his eyes.

“I am your lord you will respect me and I have every right in this. She refuted your advances Kimigra; you should have stopped at her first refusal.”

“She will be mine!” the youkai snarled, it was then Inuyasha made his presence known.

“Sango is part of my pack, and such under my protection,” Inuyasha said as he walked to stand next to his brother as they both starred down the youkai. “You advanced, she refused. Any further contact with her will be approved by me,” he said his eyes and voice hard as stone.

Kimigra snorted a dark laugh, “Me, be approved by some worthless hanyou like yourself. You should be kissing the ground I walk on pup,” he snarled though the sound was cut off by the vicious backhand he received from Sesshoumaru that sent him to the floor.

“He is my brother and your prince. Son of Toga, taiyoukai and ruler of the Western Lands before this Sesshoumaru took control, son of Izayoi, human princess to the Mushin village. Inuyasha is his name and you will give him the same respect you do me,” Sesshoumaru growled at the insolent inuyoukai.

It was the first time that his brother had done or said anything of the like and it surprised Inuyasha greatly though his face didn't show it. Finally he felt pride in his mixed heritage, pride that his brother had shown just now. His eyes remained focused on the slowly standing youkai and he watched as the youkai's hand shot out toward his brother, poison filling his claws.

In a move that was more unconscious than anything else, Inuyasha darted forward and knocked the youkai back to the ground. He growled low at the youkai as he stood once again and moved toward the door.

“Naraku shall be the fall of you yet, brothers of the west.”

Kimigra walked out and as he left the room he proclaimed one last promise, “Sango will be mine!”

“Damn,” Inuyasha muttered.

“It seems that we now have a threat on our hands.” Sesshoumaru turned to his brother and noticed the small bit of smoke coming from the fire rat robes. “His poison has touched you. Those will need to be cleaned. Change into your formal robes before we leave.”

“What?” Inuyasha said not having paid his brother any attention as he had been watching the inuyoukai leave in haste.

Sesshoumaru sighed before taking his brother by the back of his haori, “Do you never listen to me?”

Elder brother led younger brother to his chambers and tossed him lightly inside the room.

“Change into your formal robes.”

Inuyasha snorted and crossed his arms.

“Inuyasha, so you wish to see Kagome today with poison on your clothing?” he asked with a raised brow.

Sesshoumaru gave a lopsided smirk at his brother's curse and turned, closing the door as he left leaving his brother to change. He made his way back down toward Sango's chambers hoping to extend his apologies for what had happened earlier and see to the status of her health. As he rounded the corner and came down the hall he found her leaning weakly against the wall pretty much near to where he had left her after dragging the inuyoukai away.

“Sango, are you alright?” he asked as he came to her side.

“Yes, I'm fine. Just a bit tired,” she said as her eyes drooped tiredly as she tried to stand away from the wall that she had been leaning against.

As she moved away from the wall she swooned and would have fallen had it not been for Sesshoumaru once again catching her in his arms and holding her against his chest. He looked upon her in concern; he thought she was fully recovered from the poison introduction, could he have been wrong? It did seem to be that way.

“Sango!” Miroku's alarmed voice came as he stepped out of his chambers, his hair still damp from his bath. “What are you doing out of bed?”

“I'm fine Miroku,” she said softly as she tired to stand on her own, though Sesshoumaru would not relinquish his hold on her shoulders, he could see damn well that she was not well and so could the monk.

“The hell you are,” he said his alarm at her current state of being throwing his usual tact out the preverbal window.

“Monk,” Sesshoumaru said looking to the human man for an answer.

“Her fever reappeared last night. I could hardly touch her face she burned so hotly.”

Miroku moved toward Sango and with Sesshoumaru's aide got her back into her room and back into her bed. Nearly the moment her head hit the pillow, Sango's drooping eyes closed and she succumbed to sleep. Miroku covered her with a blanket and followed the taiyoukai out of her chambers, closing the door quietly behind him.

“I am concerned about Lady Sango,” Miroku said to Sesshoumaru as they stood in the hall. “The color around the scratched was almost gone near midday yesterday, but last night they flared a brilliant red again and her fever returned along with her physical illness. What can be done to help her?” he asked.

“I will talk with the healer, but this Sesshoumaru does not know. Normally, the female will become immune to the poison.”

“And if she doesn't?” Miroku asked, his eyes glancing back to the closed door.

“It will kill her.”
