Chapter Two

That could have been avoided. He could have put an end to everything then and there. That whole experience could have been avoided. No, she could have been avoided. With his keen sense of hearing and scent, there was no excuse. Kagome should never have spoken to him.
Inuyasha stood there, staring down the six story building as Kagome took off. Yes, he could have avoided her, but he hadn't wanted to. How stupidily insane was that? The knowledge was there and it weighed down on him.
“Fuck.”
The time wasn't ready or right. Kagome wasn't ready. Five more years. Five more fucking years and then—then—everything could be set right again.
“Fuck.” He said again and he'd never heard a truer word because if he kept this up, they were all fucked. He knew it. Kagome would have known it. He sank his hands into the front pocket of his jeans. Her scent was still strong, still lingering and he inhaled. He wavered; he remembered.
“Stupid wench.” He muttered and the endearment was so foreign on his tongue but so familiar. He'd said it more times than he could count and each time, they'd been directed at Kagome. So many things directed at Kagome. So many things...
“What are you doing, Inuyasha?”
The question didn't come from him. Spoken so coolly, so calm but with a strange fondness that only a brother could share. He shrugged as he felt Sesshomaru's aura. “Nothing.”
“Don't be a fool.”
He'd already been a fool. “I didn't do anything, brother mine.” Inuyasha mocked.
“No, you didn’t.”
Sesshomaru was right. He hadn't done anything, but that wasn't what Sesshomaru was getting at. The truth was there between the two brothers. Inuyasha had been a fool. Inuyasha was too great a demon, even half, to have not been able to avoid Kagome.

For all their sakes, he should have.
Ye God's, the time wasn't right. She was too young and too innocent. She was too sweet. She was too everything for the twisted, sadistic destiny that Fate had for her. Even when she matured, she was still too damn innocent—it wasn't fair.
His awareness of Kagome was all too real. He'd known Kagome was there. He'd felt her. She'd felt him, too. She wouldn't have known what that telltale thickening in the air had been, the power surge and adrenaline. But her spirit would have known that a Demon was in her presence.
He lifted his right foot, propping the flat of his foot against the ledge. He'd had to get away from her then. It was a matter of Kagome and the world not being ready for what she held so carelessly and unknowing in her body.
When she'd been fifteen and fell into the Well, she'd been an adolescent. Too young a body, too young a mental state of mind without the proper training to contain her Powers. Being thrown into the search for the Jewel shards and rising up against Naraku, she hadn't had the time to bring to full capacity her Powers. Too young...
Even now when she'd been in his presence, those powers had threatened to come out—she was a walking, talking purifying weapon. From eight years old to the very now, Kagome was something to be dealt with.
She hadn't been ready when she'd fallen down the Well then.
“No contact, Inuyasha.”
“You can go to hell.” Inuyasha muttered. Sesshomaru was right but Inuyasha would be damned if he let Sesshomaru order him around. Inuyasha had maintained the “no-contact” for the minority of Kagome's life, minus her 8th birthday and today.
“Do you want her to die?”
Inuyasha snarled and spun around, his clawed hands fisting. “Do I want her to die? Why do you think I sent her back home? I'm giving her the chance to grow up, you bastard, so those damn powers of hers have a standing chance. So we all don't end up in our own hell because of Naraku.”
“Do not make the same mistake twice, Inuyasha. We are not granted a second chance.”
“Go away.”
“Keep your emotions under control, Inuyasha. There is no room for such senmentality in this war we are waging.”
Inuyasha scoffed at that. His emotions were under control but they already belonged to the girl from the future. Sesshomaru would have to deal.
They were waging an invisible war that for the most part, humans were blind to. A war that waged between the Feudal Era and the Modern Day society. There was a fine line connecting the two worlds and Naraku knew it. Kagome was a rador on that line. Sesshomaru only remained here in this time to keep the world from falling into nothing. Otherwise the energy spilling over from the Feudal Era would have already taken hold over this Era.
The only thing that kept Naraku from victory was his lacking knowledge of the Well. He'd known Kagome could travel between the worlds. Naraku would like nothing better than to rule and master. If he ruled the past, he ruled the future. But he could also destroy the future.
Dammit, Inuyasha needed Kagome.
“Watch her, Inuyasha, and protect. Keep her from the Well.” Sesshomaru said before he was gone.
He'd protect her with his life.
They'd already changed Fate and it was pulling at them. Time was ticking down and it was only a matter of time before Naraku found what he needed. Inuyasha just hoped time was on their side.
There was no way in hell he was even letter her near that Well. She should have fallen last year—and he'd changed that. It wanted her back. Too bad. She was a girl out of time and she belonged no where, but she had a place in both worlds.
