Chapter Three
They'd lost too many friends. Too many allies. There was no life in this world and there would be no life if they couldn't fight back. The air was thick and heavy. Inuyasha knew if it weighed on him then it was hell on his human friends. Even the tree's that had been so vibrant with colors and life now sagged, a dull brown and wilted colors of gray and black.“Get up.” Inuyasha snarled out, yanking Kagome to her feet. She had to move. There was no choice and he wasn't leaving her behind. He'd wrapped his houri around her to keep her from shivering but ripped off the hem to wrap around her mouth and nose so she wasn't inhaling the poisonous miasma that was sinking into their pores.
It wouldn't last long, it was a test. This was what Naraku wanted, this was how he wanted to see the world, coated in his misery and longing. The miasma blocked out the sun, but was slowly fading—but not fast enough.
Ye God's, Naraku was right and it disgusted Inuyasha. But Inuyasha was going to change that—for all their sakes, he was going to turn things around.
“No, Inuyasha, I can do this. We can do this. You know Naraku is a lying son of a bitch. Please, stop.” Kagome begged, willing Inuyasha to stop. But he didn't. He forced her on with him, pulling her up when she fell and jerking her forward when she struggled. He wasn't hurting her, but he was forcing her. “Don't do this. I need to be here.”
There it was. In the clearing. The Well that was a link between both worlds, between Kagome and him. Kagome saw it and panicked, refusing to back down.
He was stronger than her. He had to be, for the both of them. He captured her wrist in a bruising hold—forgive me, he thought—and jerked her with him towards the well. “No, you don't.” He bit out. “Naraku is right and you know it. It's too late HERE.”
The Jewel was gone but Naraku wasn't. How did that make sense? That had been what they'd been fighting for but now the battle was something twice as foreboding. They reached the well and he tossed her yellow backpack inside.
Naraku had said something that made sense. The bastard was fucking right. Inuyasha could defeat him; but not without Kagome. But it was too late for Kagome. Inuyasha didn't know how Naraku had put two and two together but when Kagome had come through the Well all those years ago and her powers forced on her, she hadn't been READY. She was old enough now, but her powers were defaulted. They hadn't had time to mature as they would have—as they should have.
They needed the Jewel...but with it gone, what was there? Naraku. He was all powerful. Insanely. He was steadily taking over and tearing apart the Feudal Era. But he could rule one and all if he knew the way between Worlds.
“You're going home, Kagome. You're going home so we have a chance to fix this and to start all over. With everything. He's right, the bastard, and you know it. He figured it out. But I swear to God I'm going to beat him at his own game. I'm not going to lose you because of our mistakes. Go home and start over.” He bit out. “You'll have the chance to right your powers and show that bastard what you're made of.”
She'd be reborn. Either she would remember or she wouldn't. It was a chance he was going to take. But either way, she would fight when the time came and they wouldn't lose. He just had to keep the where abouts of the Well from Naraku.
He gripped her face between his hands. “Now go home, Kagome.” He said before kissing her hard. She stood against him, shocked, because Inuyasha had never kissed her—she'd always kissed him. He shocked her even more when he said, finally, “I love you, wench.”, and pushed her into the Well.
His heart wrenched when she screamed his name and even more so when he knew she wouldn't remember his last words.

Inuyasha woke in a cursing sweat. He realized where he was, what Era and closed his eyes. He was in the future, not the past. Kagome was gone from that dangerous world. For now.For now.
He knew that when she returned, the tides would be turned. Not easily, but in the end, they would. He'd never forget that day he'd had to force her to leave and every damn time he stayed in this Era it replayed over and over. He swung his legs over the side of the bed and sat up, running a hand down his chest before dropping his head into his hands. He sat there, sulking and contemplating.
Who knew seeing Kagome again would be so hard? He could see but he couldn't touch.
God, he was ready to go home. He would have liked to say he traveled to this world still to really help guard it with Sesshomaru until the time was right, but the truth was, when he was here, he watched over Kagome. He kept her safe. Safe from herself.
More or less, this modern Era was a second home. Barely. It had its advantages, like it's unending supply of Ramen and TV. When everything was over, he'd miss those, but he wouldn't give up his original home for anything.
The dark room was suffocating him. He needed out. He needed fresh air. Right now he was in a mood and he didn't give a damn who saw him. Sock-less and shirtless, he stepped into a pair of tennis shoes and jumped out the open window. He went to the one place where not even Destiny could weigh so heavily on him. The Goshinboku Tree. Never mind that Kagome was right there, right inside that window.
Peace filled him as he settled up high in its branches, hidden in the shadows. Kagome's scent was everywhere, protruding from the house, lingering in the yard. The lights in her house were off, all except for her bedroom window. He stayed where he was but his ears swiveled when he heard her moving, muttering to herself.
What was that?
He watched as she lifted up her window smoothly and quietly and then took a glance at her door, a hint of defiance and guilt in her expression. He arched an eyebrow. Was Kagome sneaking out? He would have laughed if he wasn't intent on keeping himself hidden. His brows snapped down when he saw her slide a leg over the windowsill and oh hell no. Was she stupid? She'd have to climb onto the tree and then climb down. That was a long way down. Kagome had never been very coordinated.
He opened his mouth and then snapped it shut. What the hell did she think she was doing? No way in hell was he letting her climb down that tree. His hearing picked up the sound of a phone vibrating in her pocket and when she picked it up he heard her, “Yea, tell him I'm coming.”
Him? Him? He heard the scrap of his claws raking over the bark and glanced down before removing his hands from the tree. She was going to see a him? Not if he had anything to say about it. He was tempted to paddle her pretty little behind but he wasn't going to bodily intervene. He leaned forward and let a rippling growl tear from his chest. Her head jerked up at the sound and she paused, searching. He got the reaction he wanted when she slid that same leg back inside and then cautiously slid the window down.
Smart girl.
