Chapter 1

The forest of the northern tribe was a remarkable sight, with autumn coming on early this season. All around the trees were wreathed in colors of gold and red. If one had the time to sit and enjoy the view, one would be dazzled by the play of nature on the land. Soft eddies of crisp air were blowing the leaves into a rainbow of fall colors. The breeze made one want to run beneath the trees and play in the rain of nature's glory. However, that would not be happening today.

Instead, the forest began to echo with the pounding feet of many warriors. Deeper and deeper they ventured. Finally, they stopped and began to scent the air around them. As one they split up to head in every direction. Going straight to the south ran a lone warrior female. Her passage through the shrubs and underbrush was marked by a rush of air that blew the leaves up from the ground in her wake. Time was of the essence and she used all the hunting skills she knew to find a clear trail. Suddenly she caught the scent of blood on the breeze. She halted in her tracks panic-stricken. Her mind screaming to her of why she was on this hunt.

Ayame had risen with the sun, as was her usual habit. She rose gracefully from her futon of soft skins. On silent feet, she crossed to the woven mat serving as a door to her private den. Her hands brushed it out of her way to enter the main cavern of her packs communal room. As she entered, many of the young pups ran to her seeking affection. They all knew that she would take the extra time to play with them. As she fell to the floor under the onslaught of the pups, many of the elders stopped to admire what a fine woman she was growing into.

No one could understand how the wolf prince Kouga could turn her away. This was a woman who would make a fine mate. She was a little unconventional true, but it was not her fault. Her parents had been killed when she was just a pup and then her grandfather (who was also the elder of the tribe) took her to raise as his own. In this way she was taught all the skills of the male warriors. She was strong and fast, easily holding her own in battles. Many times she had fought at her grandfathers' side to protect their home. She was admired by all for her bravery and skill. This was not to say that she was not feminine. Quite the contrary. One had only to look at her and watch her in the quite of the pack.

When it was just pack in the quite times she would help the women in the den. Many meals were made by her hands. As well as furs mended and washed. Her free time was spent helping the mothers with the pups. She taught them many games and loved to frolic with them. Often she would take them all down to the stream, in front of the mountain that housed their den, to play in the water. These were the times that the younger males got into much trouble trying to catch a glimpse of the young beauty as she swam. They just could not help theirselves. The beauty of her soul shone to her outer beauty.

You see Ayame was not like the rest of her pack. The majority of her pack were brown wolves. The rest with the exception of her grandfather and herself were black wolves like Kouga. Her grandfather was one of the rare white wolves from the far Northern areas. Ayame herself was a red wolf. Red wolves were now almost as rare as the white in this area was. It made her beauty stand out all the more.

Ayame in her human form stood at 5' tall. This was unusual as most of the demon wolves in her family were much taller. Her hair was a flaming red, which when loose brushed the bottom of her shapely derriere. Usually she wore her tresses pulled into two ponytails high on her head. Around her forehead she wore a thin white leather headband to hold any hair that might escape in battle. On her wrists were two white wristbands and on her legs two white fur wraps to protect her shins. The shin wraps covered to the knee only. This left a bare expanse of muscle to mid-thigh where her fur wrap skirt covered her like a short skirt. The front had to slits that rode high on her legs showing more of the sweet expanse of her legs from the front. Her chest armor served as a shirt to cover her. It fit like a tank top the bottom was black and the edging of the heart shaped top was a blood red. It had two tiny black straps holding it over her shoulders. Her throat and shoulders were bare unless she was traveling at which time she would wear a short cloak of white fur over her shoulders clasped with a thin silver chain with three youkai teeth.

Now this package was nice and it made the men all stare but what really caught attention was her face. She had a beautiful heart shaped face. Thin auburn brows arched over the biggest crystal green eyes they had ever seen. Long sooty lashes framed those eyes making them stand out all the more. Her nose was thin and aquiline, her cheek bones high, and her chin just the tad bit stubborn. This was all capped off with two full lips that were always rosy and begging to be kissed. At least this is what her pack thought.

This fine morning as she finished playing with the pups before breakfast, she did not have a clue what the rest of the day would bring.

After breakfast, she was summoned to help the men hunt further up the mountain for a rouge panther youkai that was killing game needlessly. All morning until late noon they searched and could find no trace. Finally, exhausted they headed back to the rest of the pack. As they got close to the den they began to pick up the smell of blood. Closer still and they began to hear the women's cries.

As they reached the den they were met by the centuries left on duty to guard the pack. Immediately, they were told that the rouge panther youkai had come down to the stream where all the young were playing. He had pounced on the defenseless pups taking two into his mouth and ran. Two of the men at the stream had made to stop him, but he could not be stopped. His claws had ripped the men in pieces. A crying woman, that had seen it all wailed," That he had been abnormal." Much bigger than a normal panther youkai should be and unafraid of all that attacked him.

It took only moments for the hunters to once again set out in the hunt. This time they were fueled by urgency. They could not let him harm the pups. Pups were what secured a packs future, not one could afford to be lost.

So here she was. She shook her head of the thoughts crowding in her mind. Quickly, she ran in the direction of the blood smell. It became stronger and stronger as she reached its origins. Her head began to swim sickeningly. So much blood. How could so much blood come out of two small pups? She finally came to the point of the blood smell. It was a small clearing that was literally bathed in blood.

Ayame in a dazed shock looked around at the carnage. Her mind frozen in horror, until her nose finally caught up to her brain and let it process the fact that none of the blood scents were of her packs pups. Both pups were older, at least seven winters and their scents were quite distinctive. She sniffed around the clearing finally catching a small whiff of their scents heading out through some underbrush.

A call came from deep in her chest summoning the hunters to her location. She then followed the smell of the pups; it was surrounded with the smell of another bloody youkai that she could not identify. It took only moments that felt like hours to reach an abandoned fox den under an old tree deep in the forest. As she approached she was met by a low threatening growl from deep in the shadows.

Ayame stopped in her tracks. She tried to sense what had the pups. She wondered if they still lived. She tried to edge closer and the growl became louder. In moments her pack was with her. Each man stood steady waiting for a chance to attack and retrieve the young. Suddenly, a gruff voice called out from the darkness.

"Hey woman, you are the pups kin yes?"
"Yes" Ayame replied in a startled voice.

It took only moments and the two pups scrambled out of the den to Ayame. Both looked unharmed, just a little dirty. Each was crying and trying to tell her something at one time. The hunters made to move to the foxhole and the pups went crazy.

"No!" screamed out Tobouay. This was closely followed by the same response from the female pup at his side.

"Why are you holding us back Tobouay." questioned Ayame.

"Because she saved us."

"Who saved you and how."

"She did. The one in the den. When we got to the clearing the big demon said that he was going to eat us. He set us on the ground and just as he was about to bring his claws down on us SHE jumped out at him. I couldn't see where she came from. She was just there. She yelled at him as she fought. I don't know what she said. Then he hurt her but she kept on fighting him. When he threw her into the tree he started to come at us again. That's when she got all scary and then she just ripped him apart. She was scared and she brought us here to hide until you came. We told her about the pack and how they would be here soon." As Tobouay said the last his voice cracked and the female began to cry. Suddenly he grabbed Ayame's hand and began to drag her to the den as they got closer she could see blood staining the ground. Again, Tobouay cried out to say, "You just have to help her Ayame. She's dying."

Ayame prayed as she finally saw the figure laid out in the shadows covered in blood.

Ok I hope that this wasn't totally lame. I was trying to set up some detail for later chapters. So anyway please ignore any spelling, punctuation or other grammatical errors. I don't have a beta reader. Nor do I own a nice enough word program that has punctuation or spell checker. So just bear with me and I hope ya like.
