Chapter 5

The morning after Elder had directed Ayame and Kya to find Kouga; both girls were giving teary farewells to all the pups before they left out. The parting was not an easy one. Tobouay was especially hard to let go. He had formed a bond with Kya after she had recovered. He thought of her as an older sister. He loved and respected her and he knew that she felt the same. He was scared that if Kya left that she would never come back. It took many moments and finally a solemn promise to make Tobouay release Kya's waist and calm his fears. With a kiss to his cheek and a final wave, both girls took off at a run so that they would not look back.

They had been running for many hours and the sun was high in the sky as they stopped for lunch. Many miles separated them from the den now. Both girls were silent as they thought of their fears. Ayame was very deep in her own thoughts when she heard her name called and looked up to see Kya looking at her with a look of concern.

"Ayame are you ok?" questioned Kya.

"Yes. Yeahh. Uhmm No." babbled out Ayame, as she looked straight at Kya. "Damn I don't know if I can do this Kya."

"It's because of Kouga isn't it?"

"Yes. I am scared to see him again. I threw myself at him two years ago. I begged him to be my mate and he would not have me. He preferred to chase after a woman who already loved another. Now I am scared that when I see him again he will laugh and think that I am still trying to chase him. He will never take me seriously."

"Ayame don't worry so much. You have me with you now. Do not let that man make you feel less than you are. He is not worth it. You are more than he deserves if he could not see the real you the last time that you met. And he could not have seen the real you if he chose another."

"Thank you Kya" replied Ayame as she sat beside her friend and gave her a heartfelt hug.

As Ayame hugged Kya, she felt how tense she was holding herself. Ayame turned her head to see her friends face. Kya's face was a cold mask of calm but her eyes showed many things. Not the least of which was a little fear. Ayame felt guilty for not seeing her sister’s distress sooner. She released Kya from her hold to lean back and catch her eye.

"Kya what is the matter and don't try to tell me nothing. Remember I am your sister now and you can't make me believe that nothing is wrong."

"It's just that I am. I am...Damn it Ayame I'm scared. I finally found a home here and I was comfortable. Our pack was the first I had encountered that accepted me. Everywhere else I went people cursed at me or tried to kill me. That is humans and other demons. No one wanted me. I am scared that I might get you hurt or killed out here. What if this Kouga doesn't want me around? Then what will we do. I do not want to disappoint the Elder. I owe him and you so much."

Ayame made Kya look her directly in the eyes as she took her sister’s hands in her own and replied, "Kya look at me. You are my sister. My family. Sure Elder is my grandfather and all of the pack is considered family but my close family is gone. My mother and father are long dead and I have had no one to ease my hurts. Elder tried but he had a whole pack to care for. Not just one small pup. Until you came along I had no one but myself. Now I have a sister that I love to help me through anything. I would gladly die for you, as I know you would me. Some ties bind deeper than blood. You could never disappoint me. If Kouga will not take you into his pack, we will leave. The two of us will continue on our own like we are now. So this is nothing to worry over."

"Your right Ayame. You are my family. So there is nothing to worry about as long as we have each other. Thank you for cheering me up."

"It was nothing. Now come on. Daylight is wasting and we have many more miles to go."

With that, both girls rose to their feet and smiled at one another. In a flash they were off again.

One month later

They had traveled many miles. Back and forth trailing Kouga and his two companions. They were always so close to catching him and then he would slip away before they could reach him. They were bone weary when they found a place to rest for the night. It was very close to a hot springs that Kya really wanted to get into. Unfortunately, both girls were so tired that as soon as they stopped they had to sleep. Their bodies demanded it. Ayame curled close to the base of a large tree as Kya jumped overhead to lie upon a sturdy branch.

The morning brought an explosion of sunshine that promised a beautiful day. Ayame and Kya greeted the dawn with loud yawns and twin grins. Both had gotten the rest that they had sorely needed. Kya jumped to the ground and stretched the muscles in her back and calves. Ayame looked on in amusement as Kya gave a low rumbling growl that sounded suspiciously like a purr.

"Kya are you sure your Innu and not NICO yoke." laughed Ayame as Kya scowled.

"Hell no I am not a NICO. Why would you even say that?"

"Well you were purring."

"That was not a purr Ayame. Can't you tell the difference?"

"That was a purr Kya. You know it was. Don't try to argue the fact it was cute."

"Damn it Ayame. Quit messing with me. Why don't you go hunt breakfast? It is your turn anyway. I hunted the past two days."

"Ok. Ok. I'll go get you some food. You’re always so grouchy when your hungry. You would think you had not eaten in a week the way you act. So what are you going to do while I'm gone?"

"Well I thought that I would go take a bath in that springs we saw last night. I am dying for a bath. I am so filthy."

"Hey that's no fair. I want a bath too."

"Is to fair. You can bathe after you get back with breakfast and we eat. Tell you what. You get breakfast and I will cook it while you use the springs. Sound good to you."

"Ok. That sounds good." Ayame rose to her feet and started to walk off. Getting a few feet away she called back over her shoulder "Hey don't take to long I will be back real soon. Then it's my turn." With that she broke into a run to find breakfast.

Moments later found Kya letting out a loud sigh of pleasure as her lithe nude body sank into the warm waters of the spring. She quickly dunked her head scrubbing the loose dirt out of her hair. After a through rub down she leaned out of the spring to grab a small plant that when broken was an aromatic cleaning agent. She made short work of cleansing her hair and body. As she finished she knew that she should head back to camp to cook breakfast. Ayame should be back at any second and she would want to bathe too, and then start another day of searching for that ass Kouga.

As she thought of Kouga and how he had hurt her sister; she leaned back on a smooth rock that ran into the springs and closed her eyes. Her last thoughts were "If he ever hurts my sister again I'll kill him."

A little over an hour later.

Kya came awake in a rush. Water splashed as she jumped out of the springs and quickly pulled on her chest armor and fur wrap. She had never gotten used to the rest of the outfit that Ayame wore. The cape, shin guards and wristbands bothered her. Therefore, when she had gotten well and could be measured Elder had presented her with her own armor, fur wrap and sword. Where Ayame had red and black chest armor, Kya had all black chest armor. Her fur wrap was as black as her armor and made her pale skin glow like a pearl. She wore no wraps on her feet or arms, so the only other adornment on her body was a small necklace. The chain was a simple black leather thong and held a small pendant with the Kanji for courage. The pendant was the only thing of her own that could be saved after the fight with the panther youkai. The original silver chain had been broken beyond repair, but Ayame wanting her to have something of her own had put it on a thin black leather thong, that she used to tie her hair back so that Kya could still wear it.

As she sprinted back to camp she finger combed her hair and left it loose around her shoulders. She never bound her hair if she could help it. The feel of the strands blowing in the breeze always made her happy. So why pull it back and restrain it she thought.

Moments later she was in the camp but there was no sign of Ayame. Kya inhaled deeply but the smell of Ayame was from this morning. No new scent was in the camp. She could hear no sounds of Ayame in the forest near her. It took only moments for Kya to leave the camp. There was no gear to take as all that Ayame and Kya had left the den with was the clothes on their backs and Ayame's sword.

Ayame's scent trail was easy to follow from the camp she had stopped several times, apparently to flush out game. Her scent wound further and further into the forest. Finally, it stopped for sometime near where Kya could smell another wolf. Kya felt a knot form in her stomach. Her thoughts ran unchecked.

"Could this be Kouga's scent I smell.” she thought, "If it is why did Ayame not come get me. Where is she? If this is him he better not have hurt her."

Kya leaped after the scent of Ayame that followed the scent of the other wolf. A few miles later she could tell that the forest had been flattened by a fight. Seconds later she began to smell blood. Her mind did not catch up to tell her that the blood smell did not belong to Ayame, because as soon as the scent hit her nose she could hear a man cursing and he said Ayame's name.

Kya knew that it was that bastard Kouga. She did not stop to think. She just reacted. She was going to kill him for hurting her sister. No one would ever hurt her family again.

With that in mind she leaped from the nearest tree and straight at the wolf youkai that was screaming in her sister’s face. As she kicked him in the center of his chest, he flew through the air. As he landed Kya was already snarling over him. Murder was in her eyes as she said “I'm going to rip you apart you bastard. I'm going to make you wish for death after the way you just talked to my sister."
