Chapter 9

By the time Kya could finish her story the sun was setting slowly in the horizon. Everyone sat in a quiet moment of contemplation taking in each word and gathering their thoughts. Kagome seemed to be the first to come to herself. She jumped to her feet and looked at the group at large. She then turned her chocolate colored eyes towards Kya and Ayame.

"You two will stay and share dinner with us. We will continue this conversation then." stated Kagome with a nod of her head.

"We will stay long enough to finish this tale and have some questions answered." said Kya as she rose to her feet. “For now Ayame and I will go hunt." With that, Ayame also rose to her feet and they quickly disappeared into the forest in search of game.

The others than began to make camp at the edge of the clearing. While the girls made up the sleeping pallets, Miroku and Shippou gathered firewood. Inuyasha left to scout the area and make sure that it was safe from nearby demons. They all quietly went about their tasks preparing for the arrival of dinner.

It was not very long before Kya and Ayame returned with two plump rabbits and a wild boar. They had already gutted and skinned the animals for cooking. It took no time in this fashion to place them on a spit over the fire to cook. When this task was completed everyone was sitting glancing into the fire. Each was lost in thought. Kya had questions her mind needing an answer. She looked up at Kagome. As if feeling the weight of Kya's stare, she raised her head a questioning look on her face.

"Kagome, how did the well bring me here?" Kya said seriously.

"Well the well is very old. Somehow it acts as a portal between our times." Kagome paused for a moment forming the words she wanted to speak next. "I always assumed that the only reason that I could come through was my tie to the shikon jewel. On Inuyasha's part the tie to me through the rosary. I am not sure why it let you through. You are the only other person besides us that has been able to. However, if you came here through the well you should be able to go home the same way."

"Uh Uh" replied Kya shaking her head. “I tried four times over a six month period. It would never let me through. I could feel the magic. It was as if it was telling me that I had to stay. Like there was something that it wanted me to do first."

"You felt the well speak to you lady Kya." stated Miroku from his place near Sango.

"Yes and No it was not like someone actually speaking as we are to each other. It was more of an impression to the soul."

"You said that it would not let you through and that you had tried four times over a six month period. So exactly how long have you been stuck in this time." questioned Kagome.

"Well time runs together very badly for me so I think that I have been here for almost two years."

"Two years. How did you survive? I mean you said that you had just found out about your heritage. I am really amazed."

"Well most of it was pure luck" stated Kya with a grin. "I got lucky most of the first demons that attacked me were small. I got hurt a pretty good bit. Then there were the humans. They all feared me. The ones that didn't wanted me dead. So I learned quickly to try to avoid everyone. I started to travel all over trying to find anyone that I could trust to try to help me get home."

"Personally I am glad Kami sent her here. If he had not I would not have my sister and the pack would have lost two of the pups." said Ayame.

"Well after we find this shard we are on the way back to the village. There is an old Miko there named Kaede. Maybe she can tell us why the well will not let you through." said Kagome as she turned to look at Inuyasha. "Hey Inuyasha are we close to a spring. I really need a bath."

"Ohhh a bath." interrupted Kya. "There is a hot springs a short distance from here. Come on lets go."

Ayame started to laugh as Kya bounded to her feet and began to look at them impatiently. The others all looked at the two with questions in their eyes.

"Ever since we found Kya and healed her she can't stand to be dirty." laughed out Ayame.

"Tell them the real reason Ayame." said Kya a stern look on her face.

"Well you see she was hurt so badly that we concentrated just on cleaning the wounds. When she finally came to we were so happy that we ignored the rest of her. It finally hit me when I took a good look at her. She was filthy. Her hair looked brown from all of the blood and dirt. She was totally covered head to toe in dried blood and who knows what else."

"Ha what she is not telling you is that she laughed at me. When I finally got to a springs to bathe and saw my reflection, I could not believe that it was me. It took me over an hour to get all of the grime off of me."

"Hey I helped Kya. It wasn't that bad."

"Ha you know that it was bad. Now come on. Get up already I want to go take a bath."

Sango and Kagome could not help but laugh at the disgruntled look on Kya's face. Their laughter joined Ayame's as they grabbed their bath supplies. As the girls walked into the woods Sango yelled back to the camp.

"Shippou make sure that there is no peeking."

In moments the girls were at the springs and quickly they all stripped and got into the soothing warm waters. They all took a moment to sigh and lean back to soak. Many quite moments went by before Kya started to make small movements. She began to fidget more and more. Finally, Ayame gave in.

"What is the matter Kya?"

"Uhmm Kagome."

"Yes Kya." said Kagome as she turned her head to look at the girl in question.

"Kagome I can smell the soap in your bag. It smells like bath and body works. May I please borrow it. Please." said Kya making puppy eyes.

Kagome laughed at the innocent look and reached into her bath supply bag. She suddenly pulled out a bottle of sandalwood rose body wash. Kya could only stare at it longingly. With a laugh Kagome passed it too her.

Kya was in heaven. This had been her favorite kind of soap. The smell was close to her own natural scent and did not overpower her more sensitive sense of smell. She made short work of coating her body in the rich lather, removing the thin layer of dust coating her skin. She sighed as she washed her hair and rinsed her body clean. As she finished and went to rest back at the edge she noticed the other girls were also finishing up. As they all once again leaned near the edge soaking up the warm water Kya called out her thank you.

"Kagome thank you for letting me use your soap. I haven't had any in so long. I really missed that." said Kya with a grin.

"You’re very welcome Kya."

"Well I guess that Kya and I had better move on now. We have to find a place to camp for the night and then we will start our search for Naraku in the morning." said Ayame.

"No you can't do that." said Kagome as she and Sango both shook there heads.

"Kya-sama needs to see Kaede-obaasan. You must stay with us and go back to the village." said Sango.

Kya and Ayame looked slowly at one another. Ayame gave a low growl and Kya answered in kind. Sango looked on in fascination at the exchange. She had heard of this but never seen it practiced. All of the demons that she was now in contact with all used spoken language. None of them ever spoke in the instinctive animal language of their kind.

As the conversation came to a close, Ayame was the first to look over at Sango and Kagome and speak.

"I'm sorry for not including you two. It's just that what Kya and I had to say was a private matter."

"So are you going to come with us to the village." questioned Kagome.

"Yes Kagome." spoke Kya. "We will go with you to this village. We will speak with the old Miko Kaede and then we will go on our quest."

Kagome nodded her head in ascent. With that all the girls exited the spring and began to dress. It took only moments to reach the camp. As they entered they all paused and looked for the male hanyou that was the unspoken leader for their little group. As Kagome found him in his usual spot lounging high in the branches of one of the trees, she yelled up to him.

"Hey Inuyasha. Kya and Ayame are going to be joining us to go to see Kaede-obaasan."

"Keh, I expected as much. They just better not slow us down any more than you weak humans." replied Inuyasha.

With that the girls split up to sleep for the night. Kagome and Shippou lay close to the tree that held Inuyasha. Nearer the fire lay Miroku and a few feet away Sango and Kirara. Ayame and Kya moved away from the rest crossing to the far side of the group of traveling companions. Ayame made her way to the base of a large tree. She rested her back to the rough bark and closed her eyes. As she did this Kya jumped overhead and climbing high into the branches, she found a thick one to sit on with her back to the trunk. In this position she could see the whole area. The wind would blow any scents that did not belong to her. She settled in to keep watch for the night. As she scanned the area her eyes met the amber gaze of Inuyasha. For one moment their eyes held each other captive and then they broke the stare.

Each settled back to relax and guard over their sleeping friends. Kya couldn't help but wonder what tomorrow would bring. What new surprises would be in store for her. Could Kaede actually help her. She knew that only Kami would know that. She decided not to let these thoughts worry her. There was no use in worrying over that which could not be helped. Each day must be taken for what it is worth. Feeling much better, she stared into the night sky and enjoyed how clear the sky appeared, so very different from what she was used too. So absorbed was she in the view that she never felt the eyes upon her.

In the nearby tree Inuyasha studied her with his brow lightly furrowed. His only thoughts all centered around how this woman was meant to change everything. And Kami only knew what she would shake up.
