Chapter 10

The day after Ayame and Kya had joined the group, they found the demon with the shikon shard. All morning Kagome had felt it getting closer and closer. By mid afternoon it felt as if it was right on top of them. They had searched all around and could find no trace. Inuyasha was getting annoyed when suddenly Kya had frozen and called to Ayame. As Ayame had looked into Kya's eyes they had called Inuyasha over. They had talked in whispers. Suddenly Kya thrust her claws deeply into the fleshy part of her upper arm. Blood welled quickly from the wound and soon the thick fluid was in a large puddle on the ground.

Kagome had been stunned by the action, but with a barked order from Inuyasha to get some bandages she moved into action. She was rummaging in her pack when she heard Kya speak.

"There is no time. It comes."

With that said the ground had given a rumble and suddenly bursting from under the ground a large worm youkai had emerged. Apparently, he had scented Kya's blood and had come for a meal. His attention was focused on Kya as he attacked. Kya jumped quickly out of his reach. Inuyasha had made short work of jumping up and splitting the large worm in two. The shard was retrieved from its stomach where it had been swallowed. After Kagome had placed the shard into the holder at her throat, she had moved to bandage Kya's wounds. When this small task was completed and Kya praised for her knowledge of knowing how to find the shard the group started on their way back to the village.

Ayame and Kya quickly found their place in this mismatched group of friends. No animosity was ever directed at Kagome by either for the supposed betrayal of Kouga. Instead, all of the girls got along very well. They would laugh and tease throughout the day. Each evening saw them laughing and cooking together. They all bathed at the same time and would often stick up for one another against the boys. As for the boys, Shippou was enamored of the pair of girls. At every stop they would take him with them. They played games and started teaching him to hunt. He was especially close to Kya who would spend all of her free time with him. She would even take him to the springs to bathe. She tended to cuddle him worse than Kagome. That did not mean that he did not escape punishment with her.

Kagome tended to let Shippou get away with murder. All he had to do was turn those big, liquid eyes up to her and she melted. Subsequently, anytime he provoked Inuyasha, it ended up being Inuyasha that paid for it. That was all coming to a halt. The first time Shippou had started a fight with Inuyasha to get attention in front of Kya, she had been speechless. Matters were only made worse when he tried to hide behind Kya. Kya had moved out of the way to let the Inuyasha discipline the kit. Shippou had started to scream for Kagome. Kagome immediately sat Inuyasha. Kya did not understand why she had done this. The kit deserved his punishment.

The next day the same action had been repeated. This time however Kya was prepared. As the young kit had ran to hide behind her she grabbed him by his shirt and pulled him up to her eye to eye. Inuyasha came to a screeching halt as Kya had begun to growl at the kit. Upon hearing the low growl the whole group had stopped and started to stare. Kagome had started to intervene when Ayame had halted her. Kagome could only watch as Shippou had begun to sniffle and whine. Finally, Kya had placed Shippou on the ground and he had shuffled over to Inuyasha. Upon reaching Inuyasha's feet he had looked up and apologized for his actions. Everyone stared as the young kit had run back to Kya and jumped into her arms. Shippou had fallen asleep a short time later. The others thought that he would run back to Kagome for comfort instead of Kya who had apparently punished him. Only the demons in the group heard the low rumbling growl that Kya gave to soothe the kit into sleep for doing as he was told. After that incident Shippou could usually be found taking turns sleeping near Kagome or sleeping with Kya high in the branches of whatever tree she chose at night.

Miroku treated Kya and Ayame both as he did Kagome. He talked often with Kya when he got the chance, asking her about the holy magic she had been taught by her grandfather. He was very interested in how the priests and monks had changed over time. He seemed appalled that most priests and monks in the future held no true holy power. The houshi was a very fun loving guy on the surface but both girls could sometimes see the desperation in his eyes. They knew about the curse placed on him by Naraku and how Kagome had slowed the process down. He tried very hard to hide his feelings from his friends so they all tried to overlook it. He often made everyone laugh and Kya and Ayame really liked the perverted fellow. They had both cracked up when he had grabbed both and asked if they would bear his children. This in itself was not funny. However, when Sango had knocked him out with her hirakatsu their laughter could not be contained.

The hardest of the group to deal with was Inuyasha. For the most part he just led the way. He didn't talk to the rest of the group much. Many days he would scout ahead all day, only coming into the camp late to eat and immediately separate himself from the others to sleep. He barely spoke to Kya or Ayame unless he asked them to sit up and act as the sentry for the camp.

So this was the dynamic that they followed for the next week as they made their way to the village of Kaede.

Meanwhile

"Ahh Kouga slow down." yelled Ginta to the rapidly fading back of his leader.

"I don't think that he is going to stop." yelled Hakaku as he and Ginta both began to run after their leader.

Ever since they had met up with Kouga a week ago and found out that he had met sister Kagome, they had noticed how distracted he seemed. At first they had left him alone to brood in silence. They quickly realized that whatever was bothering him was very bad. Three days had gone by and he still hardly spoke a word. He had pushed them harder and harder during the day as if he was trying to flee from some nameless monster he could not defeat. This amazed them as Kouga never ran from anything. In the following days they had tried to speak with him. They thought if they could get him to speak about the problem that it would go away and things would return to normal. So far it had not worked and they were left to chase wherever he chose to lead.

Little did they know that Kouga who was now miles ahead of them was thinking in a similar vein. He wondered if he should tell Ginta and Hakaku about the botched meeting with Ayame. He quickly rejected the idea. He loved the two guys, they were pack and his best friends, but neither was very bright. This was one problem he had to fix himself. The question was how.

The truth of the matter was that he really liked Ayame. He had no wish for her to be hurt. He purposely gave the idea that he still cared for Kagome. The truth was the only reason he had kept her at first and said she was his woman was her ability to see the jewel shards. Back then, he like every other demon was obsessed with them. He thought that with the shards he would be invincible and no one would ever be able to destroy his pack. So when he found out that Kagome could sense them he wanted her so that he could achieve his goal. This all changed when he found out how the jewel could corrupt so badly he wanted no part of that. He only kept his shards so that he could seek revenge for his fallen pack members. As for Kagome it did not take him long to figure out that she loved the dog turd. Kouga was many things but he was not the type of man that would stand in the way of someone else's happiness. He just could not resist teasing the dog. That's why he kept going around at first but that had changed when he saw Ayame again.

That first time he had been amazed by the beautiful demoness who had attacked him. At first he hadn't a clue as to who she was. Her scent had been somewhat familiar but not her. Finally, her story had come out and the promise that he had made. Kouga had lied and said that he did not remember. The truth was he remembered too well. He remembered everything he had said to her, as well as everything he had felt back then. He had loved her as a child. He could remember how she would light up any place that she was in. Many times as a child she would snuggle up to Kouga and make him smile. He had made up his mind that one day when she came of age that he would make her his mate. When he found out that her grandfather was moving her to the Northern lands he was devastated. She was too young to mate with him. The day she became lost he had ran through the forest in agony. He had been very afraid that he would not be in time to protect her. Upon finding her being attacked his relief was so great he made short work of the youkai attacking her so he could feel her in his arms. He had unintentionally voiced his desires to her when he had made his proposal. He knew that he did not have a chance of being with her. Her grandfather was a powerful old youkai that would use her to gain a powerful alliance through her mating. He expected her to mate someone else and never see him again.

Therefore, he had buried his heart deep and made himself forget about her and the way she had felt next to his heart. Now she was back and suddenly all the old feelings were rolling through his system. His mind had clamped onto the idea that she could be his and only his. Just as quickly, he remembered that he was out to avenge his pack. It was the hardest thing he had ever done to look into her bewitching eyes and tell her that he did not want her. When the hurt look had entered her eyes, he had died a little inside. There was no hope for it though. He had to protect Ayame. He could not take her into his arms and run away as he wished. If he made her his lifemate he would put her in grave danger. He was constantly being attacked for the shards in his legs. He knew that if he took her that either she would be used against him or else he could die and leave her alone. That he could not do. Wolves mated for life and he knew that she would mourn herself to death for her mate.

So he pushed her away saying that he wanted Kagome. She just kept coming back. Finally, she had given up and even though it had broken his heart, Kouga felt that it was for the best. He had mourned her everyday. It had been unexpected to see her again the other day. His heart had leapt as he looked at her. She had grown even more beautiful. He had wanted to draw her to him, instead like an ass; he had pushed her further away not even giving her time to tell him why she was there. Then that inu bitch had come out and tried to kill him. He had been enraged at first until he found out that she was now a member of Ayame's pack and considered herself a sister. Upon finding that out, he had been relieved to know that Ayame had such a strong protector.

Those good feelings did not last long as he found out that Elder wanted them both to join his hunt for Naraku. He could not put Ayame in that sort of danger. Not to mention how could he face the temptation of having her that near. There was no way. He had done the right thing by sending her back home. Elder might be mad at her but at least she would be safe. Kouga thanked Kami for that.

As he stopped to let Ginta and Hakaku catch up to him, his last thoughts were that he would never stop loving Ayame. She would always be the mate of his heart even if he could never tell her.
