Chapter 4: Christmas time!

November had come and gone. It was now December 15th. In 10 days it would be Christmas ! That meant presents, sharing with others and a big buffet with lots of food. Since the day that Kagome had found the solution to Inuyasha's problem, she had tried going back to the well but it was still full of snow. Today, it would be a special day; it was time to decorate the house with Christmas lights and mistletoe.

-`Inuyasha ?'

-`What ?'

-`Can you come here and help me please ?' Asked Kagome while pointing towards a very highly stacked box in one of the houses main cupboard.

-`Sure. What'd you want ?' Asked Inuyasha

-`Can you help me get that box ?'

-`OK … I … I can't reach it … it's too far back on the shelf … I'm gonna need your help.' Answered Inuyasha while trying his best to get the box. `Get over here Kagome !'

And with that, he swooshed her up into his arms and held her firmly so that she wouldn't fall. Of course, you can imagine, it didn't work. The box, which was to heavy for her, tipped over, knocked her out and made Inuyasha loose his balance.

SPLAT !!!

Strings of lights where on the floor, holly on Kagome's clothing, decorations and bows holding them tied one to an another and antlers on Inuyasha's head. What a funny sight that was to see. Once again, they where very close one to another. Kagome looked strait at him in the eyes. She could see her own reflection through his purple gaze. Pale white skin under his raven black hair, she couldn't believe that it had been already 2 months that he was stuck under human form. While looking longly at him, she noticed that he was for her a best friend. Maybe even more … but she could never fill in the hole that Kikyo had left in his heart. But he didn't seem to care about Kikyo anymore for if he had, this time in his life would have pushed him to meet her to complete his old dream of living with her has a human. But he didn't, he preferred to go see Kagome. That thought created a warm spot in her chest.

-`I … Inuyasha ?' She asked gently still looking at him.

-`Kagome ?' He answered has gently has her.

She then did something that she had never done before. Her hand reached up to his face as she laid her head on his shoulder. She felt his heart start on a nervous beet. He had turned tomato red and was throwing bashful looks at her.

-`I haven't slept a lot lately' Started Kagome. `Let me rest … please ?'

-`Hum … sure, if you want to …' Answered Inuyasha still beet red.

After a couple of minutes, she fell asleep while clutching his shirt. Her small nose was buried into his shoulder and her breathing was regular. He looked at her sleeping like he had done so many times in the feudal era. But today was different, she was sleeping peacefully not in a sleeping bag, but on him. When he saw that she was knocked out, he carefully shifted her into his arms and then got up and walked up to her room while holding her against his chest. She was so pretty like that. She didn't look like Kikyo at all ! Kagome was a lot softer than her former life. Yes, he preferred Kagome to anyone else. Has he entered her room, he laid her flat onto her bed and pulled up the covers over her. He brushed of a couple of lost strings of hair out of her face and patted her forehead. He closed out the lights in her room and shut close the blinds over her windowsill and then walked out of her room while closing the door behind him. He sighted out and walked back to the decoration cupboard to pick up the things that had fell down when both of them had been bumped out of the way. His conscience was starting to cache up with him. He felt guilty of having to keep her from having fun with her friends. She was after all only a school teenage girl and she deserved better than chasing down pieces of shards. She was scarifying her life for him and the only thing he could think about was himself. He realized that all the time that she had to spend with him in the feudal era, was time of her normal life, her real life taken away from her.

A couple of hours later, Kagome woke up in her room. Still in a trance-like daze, she motioned her tired eyes around her room and noticed that she had been placed in her bed. She still had a faint smell of Inuyasha in her nose. What had happened ? Had she fallen asleep on him ? Was it her mother who had place her there ? No, that was impossible ! Her whole family was out shopping for presents and the family turkey ! Then it must have been Inuyasha who had laid her there … `Oh -my-God … what am I going to do ? I can't face him ! what am I going to say ?' She asked herself. `I guess there's no escaping it … I have to go downstairs … I can't hide for ever …' She finished off her trail of thoughts by stepping off her bed and motioning her hand towards the door knob. All of a sudden, her heart started to beet nervously, like if she was scared, but exited at the same time. She could feel the heat creeping onto her face and pounding in her ears. Why was her body reacting that way ? Because in a couple of seconds she would have to face Inuyasha ? Was it … Love ?

She walked out of her room still wearing the delicate blush on her cheeks. She went down the stairs and into the living room to find Inuyasha staring at the box of decorations. When he heard her footsteps entering the room where he was, he twisted his neck to look at her standing in the doorway.

-`You're awake !! Are you feeling alright ? I was starting to worry … heu … I mean I was starting to wonder if you were alright' Said Inuyasha while reformulating his words.

-`Were you the one to place me in my bed ?' That sentence had slipped out of her mouth before she had time to notice it.

-`Hum yes actually, well you didn't seem like if you where comfortable lying over me like that …' Answered Inuyasha.

-`Oh but I was !! ……… I … I mean no ! uh yes ! I …'

What the hell was she saying ??? What the heck was she babbling about ? What had gotten into her !! Why had she told him that ? Well he was the one who asked right ? well, indirectly …

-`Inuyasha, that is not the problem … well actually there isn't any problem I was just curious … I wondered if it was you because if yes … oh never mind. Don't listen to me … I'm just rattling about everything and anything' Said Kagome in one huge breath.

-`Because what ? what if it was me ?' Asked Inuyasha noticing the obviously tense atmosphere.

-`Thank you'

It was getting clearer and clearer to Kagome everyday. She was starting to fall for him ! Her behavior in his presence was indescribable except for the fact that she would always find her self blushing when thinking of him and babbling nonsense when ever she would try to speak to him on sensitive subjects. How ever had he gotten to her ? Maybe because she found herself in is strong comforting arms many times. She was falling for him and she couldn't do a thing. The worst part was that she knew she didn't stand a chance in is heart and that she would end up with a broken heart herself. But what could she do against it ? But little did she know that that would never happen … not in a million years.

-`Come on Kagome ! You told me you wanted to decorate the house with these things … *what ever they are* …' Said Inuyasha while breaking into her thoughts.

-`They're Christmas decorations Inuyasha, and you have to hang them around the house ! It's good tradition !' Answered Kagome while clutching some mistletoe and some bows. `Come on ! Let's put up the Christmas tree together ! It'll be fun !'

One hour passed as they decorated the tree, the staircase, the kitchen and the living room. Kagome explained everything from A to Z including every single decoration she could find … everything except one, the one last thing to do, mistletoe.

-`Hey Kagome ? What are this for ?' Asked Inuyasha looking clueless at some leafs and red berries.

-*Oh no … he found them … great … now I've got to explain what mistletoe is …* Thought Kagome. `What ? these ?? well, it's called mistletoe.

-`And what's it for ??' Asked a pretty intrigued Inuyasha.

-`Oh well, it's just a stupid tradition … no need to explain …' Said Kagome trying to avoid the subject.

*Get a hold of your self girl ! it's just mistletoe, nothing exiting about that right ? Oh great … I guess I'm going to start to blush again, and then loose my words … oh well, here goes nothing !* Thought Kagome.

-`Well … I'm interested … what's it for ?' Asked Inuyasha.

**Deep breath**

-`Legend has it that when ever two persons are under the mistletoe at the same time, well they … uh … they …'

-`They …? They what ?'

**Second deep breath with an intriguing blush**

-`They have to kiss …….' Trailed off Kagome.

-`Oh …………………………̷ 0;…………………….' Answered Inuyasha feeling pretty awkward.

-`Well there you have it ! Know you now all the traditions of Christmas including the *cough* mistletoe.

-`Ya, sure do. But where do we hang this `miseultowe' ? Asked Inuyasha

-`You mean the `mistletoe' ? You usually hang it in a doorway. But I think you can just hang it anywhere onto the ceiling.' Answered Kagome.

-`Oh, OK, well if we do a quick count, we've got 6 mistletoe things and 5 doorways so, the last one we can put over the Christmas tree.' Said Inuyasha.

-`Fine ! Sounds good ! OK let's split out into the house I'll take three and you'll take three OK ?' Asked Kagome. `I'll do the Christmas tree, the bathroom and the front door.'

-`And I'll do your mom's/grand-father's room, your brother's room and our, I mean, your room' Answered Inuyasha to Kagome's expectations. `Meet you down here in 15 minutes'

-`You're on!' Responded Kagome while entering the bathroom on the main floor.

Inuyasha started off into Kagome's room. Knowing that he was tall enough, he went strait to the doorway of her room and started to hang up the mistletoe over his head. He had noticed that she had been uncomfortable when she spoke to him about that bunch of leaves that look much like bad weeds to Inuyasha. Kissing … was that really the tradition of this plant ? If so, why was she uncomfortable talking about it ? What if … wait, did that mean what he think it meant ? She was thinking about kissing him ? No way !! That was impossible !! Kagome would never think like that !! She wasn't like that ! She didn't love him, why would she ? He had nothing to offer to her. Only screaming and fighting and arguing … why would she love him ? She had absolutely no reason to do so. When Inuyasha caught up with is day dreaming, he heard Kagome's mother speaking to her downstairs…

-`Oh Kagome !! You hung up the decorations !! How nice of you ! Did that boy who's staying with us help you out ?' Asked Kagome's mom while taking her shoes off.

-`You mean Inuyasha ? Yes he did. We did all the decorations in the house together' Replied Kagome.

-`How sweet of him … Anyway, listen Kagome, I think you're going to be happy when you hear this. Sweetheart, you're going to a ball !!!'

-`WHAT ?!? Are you serious ? For real ? When ? Why ? How come ? With whom ?'Asked Kagome, excited as day light.

-`Calm down sweetie, it's going be on the night of the 25th and you shall be going with Hojo. That's how I learned that there was a ball. I met him at the supermarket and he asked me if you where going. He then asked me if he could be your partner for the night (if you weren't feeling to sick … he didn't want to force you) So I answered yes and I just couldn't resist to go out and buy you a dress. So there you have it the whole story strait from the horse's mouth, or in our case, from the mother's mouth.' Trailed off her mom. `Now go, get going to your room and try it on … I can't wait to see what it looks like on you.'

-`Thank you so much mom !! I will be forever grateful !'

-`Ah no need to thank me, I'm only doing my job. But, I guess I could get a kiss …'

**SMOUCH on the cheeks**

-`Oh how nice !! There that's enough, you've paid me back. Now go ! Go try on your dress before I grow old waiting !' Said Kagome's mom even more excited then her own daughter.

Kagome ran up the stairs to her room while clutching a bag that held a very special dress … As she stumbled into the doorway, she came face to face with …

-`Inuyasha !! What are you doing here ?' Asked Kagome while trying to catch her breath.

-`I was hanging up the mistletoe like you asked me … see ?' Asked Inuyasha while motioning his hand towards the ceiling.

-`Oh ! Oh my …'

-`What ? what's wrong ? is it the mistle …. Toe ? Oh ….

They had both realized the position that they were in. Inuyasha recalled her words when she had explained the use of this plant : `Legend says that whenever 2 persons are under the mistletoe, they have to kiss.'

-`Oh come on Inuyasha, it's just a stupid little legend … no need to execute it …' Said Kagome when trying to break the tense air.

-`You think so ? Is it that really stupid ? Do you really think that this tradition doesn't stand to it's name ?'

-`What ? What are you saying ?? Do you want us to … to … to kiss ? Asked Kagome while blushing deeply.

-`Uh ?!? No way ! I mean yes ! but err ….'

He wanted to !! He wanted to so bad !! But he wouldn't dare ! Kagome was pure ! He could not and didn't want to take that away from her. Her life would be ruined… her first kiss would have been with a half-breed ? Some one with whom she could not walk freely because of his appearance ? Pointy dog ears, white long hair, and that awful red kimono of his. She would never be happy with him because he could never make her happy and give her what she deserved.

Without even noticing it, they had gotten closer one to another. So close that the tip of their noses brushed each other (and God knows THAT'S close). The air was tense, the breathing was heavy and their eyes where locked. Inuyasha was trying with all is might to control himself but his body was doing all the controlling. Fate was in motion and it couldn't be stopped by either one of them … but maybe with the help of someone else. Kagome dropped the bag that was carrying her ball gown at the sound of her name.

-`Kagome …' Whispered Inuyasha

-`Inuyasha …' Whispered back Kagome

That was it ! He couldn't hold back any longer, he just had to lean in and kiss her hard on the lips and stay like that for eternity. Her sent was intoxicating for him. The sent of fresh flowers was engulfing him into a world with no troubles. His heart skipped a beat when Kagome sprung around to come face to face with her younger brother, Sota.

-`Sota !! What the heck do you think you where doing ? Creeping up on me like that ! You scared the wits out of me !' Answered a pretty startled Kagome.

-`Mom sent me up to tell you not to lay your dress on your bed because it's bad luck. Don't ask me, I'm only the messenger' Said Sota while turning around to head into his room.

Kagome turn around to face Inuyasha who had taken a couple of steps a back. She couldn't believe it. If Sota wouldn't have come into her room to speak to her, Inuyasha and her, they would have kissed ! *What was up with him ? Who knows ? I bet he was thinking about Kikyo all along. That fool …* She thought to herself. *I can't believe that I almost fell for that … all thou, I was leaning in also … oh man, is this ever complicated.* Before she noticed it, Inuyasha had left the room. He was gone by embarrassment ? Why ? Kagome stepped into her room and locked herself in after she had picked up her bag from the floor.

She took the dress out of it's bag and looked at it longly. It was beautiful. It was of a flamboyant red with a very thin belt (red) with Rhine stones onto it. It attached it self around the neck with a pretty lace. She knew that in that dress she would be radiant. She tried it on and the only thing she could think about was to say :

-`Wow …'
