Chapter 7 - Recovering

"Hey sis," Joey spoke softly. "I know your asleep and probably arent listening to anything I tell you but...I love you and...I'm sorry I wasn't in time." Mai, Tea, Kaiba and Ishizu left to give Yami and Joey some private time with their siblings.

"Joe-y?" Serenity opened her eyes half way and looked at her brother, "What are you doing here? Where is here?"

"We're in the hospital sis," Joey closed his eyes but opened them quickly, "Are you ok?"

"I don't know," she moaned and sat up. Pulling her knees up to her chest she started to cry, "I don't know anymore Joey. Why'd this happen?"

"I don't know what caused him to go crazy sis, we'll see that bastard put where he belongs! In jail!"

"Joey quiet down," Serenity told him, "Joey, why did he- I mean-Oh JOEY!" Joey pulled his sister into a hug and let her cry.

"It's okay sis. You just cry it out. You can stay with us for a while okay?" she looked up and nodded tearfully. Joey left the room and let his sister get some more sleep.

"Yugi, please wake up soon? I don't know what I'll do without you around the house," Yami squeezed Yugi's hand in his own and let tears run down his face, "We'll get you better and we can just hang out all day-no week! I know I haven't spent much time with you but...I'll make sure I do. That's a promise." Yami felt Yugi's fingers move and the light purple orbs show somewhat.

"Ya-mi...what am I doing...in the...hospital?" Yugi's voice was horse from sergery and was still extremely tired.

"Yugi go back to-"

"Sleep? Please don't let me? I don't want to have nightmeres."

"Okay. Do you want to sit up?" Yami asked. Yugi nodded and tried to push himself up but failed. Yami caught him and helped him sit up.

"Thanks."

"No problem. I need to tell you something," Yami's voice lacked any cheerfulness that Yugi had woken up what so ever.

"What?" Yugi looked at Yami cocking his head, the old inosence that was still there, deepining.

"Yugi, you're legs-"

"What about them?" Yugi asked trying to move them because he was uncomfortable but they didn't move. Yugi strained, his face contorted, still no response. "Yami?!"

"Yugi I'm afraid that-"

"I can't feel my legs! Yami what's going on?!" Yugi's eyes flashed angrily.

"Yugi, you're legs, they're-your spinal cord was damaged during surgery. You lost the use of your legs," Yami's voice was low and gentle. Yugi banged on his legs.

"Why-can't-I-feel-my -legs?!" Yugi continued to hit his legs but it was no use. He couldn't feel a slight pain. "I can't feel my legs," he moaned giving up, "Now I can't even-" he started to tear up. He looked at his hands. "I'll never curl up in a ball when I go to sleep or I'll never...get to walk or drive again!"

"Yugi if I could I-"

"Would help. I know. I won't be able to...to...walk with you or Serenity in the park...I won't be able to do anything!" Yugi clentched his hand up in a fist and punched his legs. Yami had enough. Yugi went to punch his legs again be he caught the fist.

"Yugi that won't solve anything," Yami replied.

"You don't understand...maybe if I punched long enough I might feel again."

"I don't understand? Yugi...I'm the one who found you when you were covered in blood and had that knife in your chest! We almost lost you! I almost lost a great friend, a brother, a comrad. I'd rather have you alive and unable to walk than dead and gone permantly!" Yami's crimson eyes bore into Yugi's light purple ones. "Now get some sleep young one." Yami helped Yugi back down into a laying position.

"You haven't called me that in a long time."

"What? Young one?"

"That's right," Yugi answered before falling asleep, tears ran down his face. Yami left also and went to wait with the others.

"They better catch that bastard!" Joey punched the wall angrily.

"Joey calm down. This isn't going to put Tristan in jail," Tea put a reasuring hand on his shoulder. He slapped it away and walked out into the hall.

"Just stay away from me!" Joey snapped before leaving.

"Joey I-" Tea started to form tears.

"I'll be right back."

"Seto! Wait!" Kaiba was already gone. Mai pulled Tea into a hug.

"Let's go visit Yugi and Serenity hun," Mai led Tea to Yugi and Serenity's room.

"Kaiba! Hold up!" Yami and Duke ran after him.

Man, why Serenity and Yugi? Joey walked out of the hospital with his hands stuffed in his pocket. Of all the people in the world, these two didn't deserve it. Anybody but them... Joey pulled out a picture of Serenity and himself smiling. I don't remember putting this in my pocket. Joey thought for a moment. Oh yeah. I remember now. I picked it up from off the floor.

Joey was distracted from his thoughts when he was pushed against a tree and held up by the colar of his black jean coat. He opened his eyes and looked into angry blue eyes.

"What did you think you were doing Wheeler?!" Kaiba snapped slamming Joey against the tree again. Joey winced in pain but punched Kaiba in the jaw causing him to let go.

"Are you gettin soft Kaiba? Seems like it has," Kaiba punched Joey in the stomach.

"You want to say that again?" Joey fell to the ground and knocked Kaiba off his feet by kicking the back of his legs and punching him in the gut.

Joey laughed, "Sure. You're getting weak Kaiba!" Joey fell to the ground when Kaiba kicked him in the head.

"Wheeler, whatever is upsetting you is upsetting all of us! Now I sugest that you learn to understand that!" Kaiba backed away a couple of times before Joey got up. Joey stayed on the ground for a couple of minutes before standing up and whiping away the blood from his chin and lip.

"How would you know?!" Joey spat, "You're brother wasn't raped! You're best friend isn't going to be stuck in a wheel chair all his life! So tell me how you understand?! Cause I don't see how you think that!" Joey lunged at Kaiba knocking him to the ground.

"Joey calm down!" Yami tried to pull Joey away from Kaiba who was getting his butt kicked when Joey threw Yami into a tree. Duke intervined and once Yami was out of his daze they pulled Joey and Kaiba, who was now punching Joey, apart.

"He'll never understand!" Joey screamed angrily and tried to lunge at Kaiba again. Yami held onto Joey who was trying to break free. Yami tired of holding onto Joey let him go and jumped kicked him. Joey landed on the ground and coughed to get some air into his system.

"Why'd ya do that for?!" Joey asked calming down somewhat.

"To calm you down and I see it's worked. Joey we're all suffering...our friends are in there trying to recover and dealing with something they can't handle alone."

"You can either sit here and moan all you like but that will not help them, or you can go up there and be with your sister!" Kaiba looked at Joey who stood there completely dumb struck.

"I-I'm-" Joey swallowed his pride, "I'm sorry for reacting that way Kaiba. I'm also sorry for attacking you."

"I shouldn't of beat on you to get you to calm down."

"No. I needed that." Joey leaned against a tree and pulled out a photo.

"What's that?" Duke asked sitting next to Joey. Kaiba looked on from over Duke's shoulder and Yami sat by Joey.

"Oh this?"

"Yes that Wheeler. What is it?"

"A photo."

"No duh!" Duke commented.

"Keep your comments to yourself Devlin! It's a photo of me and ma sis just before she left to live with mom after her eye surgery and the whole Marik taking over the world thing was over. We took this picture to remember the peace that was rather short lived." Joey smiled, "I can't believe things have changed so much. I remember all those adventures we had. You never would have thought that we would have all of this." Joey looked up into the clouds.

"I don't know about you but I'm hungry and I want some food. You guys in?" Duke asked.

Yami shook his head no, "I've got to go visit Yugi. See how he's holding up."

"Yeah. I'm gonna go and visit Serenity. She could use someone right now too. I think her older brother is finally up to the job." Joey smiled.

"Congrats Wheeler I'll join you Devlin. I'm going to go talk to Tea too," Kaiba went back into the hospital followed by Duke.

"Wait up!" Duke ran to catch up with Kaiba. I'm a cop and this guy walks faster then I run!

"Hey kid."

"Mai you haven't called me 'kid' in a while. You really must have been worried." Serenity sat up in bed.

"Yeah. That sick bastard will be caught."

"I think I should move. I need somewhere close to work but.."

"Somewhere close to family?" Mai asked.

"Yeah but I don't want to burden you guys by living with you," Serenity sighed.

"What about-"

"Yugi? No. I couldn't. Would he let me?" Serenity questioned, "I don't even know if I'd feel comforatable. I don't think I'll feel comfortable with a man ever again," Serenity sighed, "I mean Joey yes. I know he won't hurt me yet..."

"You're scared hun. Don't worry about it. You can stay with us until you find a place to crash."

"She can alwasy crash at our place. As payment she can help clean the house and do other things. Yugi could always use the extra hand." Yami was leaning against the door with a small smirk playing across his lips, "I know he'd enjoy the company."

"Really? You mean it?" Serenity's eyes gleamed with excitment. "That means Yugi and I can drink coffee in the kitchen without having to go out!"

"Serenity...that will be a little hard to do," Yami's smile faded, "You see...he's lost the use of his legs." Serenity swore she saw a tear run down his face. He pulled the curtain open and she saw Yugi asleep.

"If there was any person he could have by his side now to help, it's you and visa versa." Mai patted Serenity on the head. "I think your brother wants to talk to you. I'll be back later." Mai got up from the chair and left. Yami closed the curtain and went to talk with Yugi in private.

"Hey sis."

"Joey." Serenity smiled.

"I'm sorry for not being there," a tear ran down his face.

"It wasn't your fault Joey. It was-"

"Don't you dare say that it was yours. Tristan became too lost in himself...I don't ever want to see his face again. Next time I do, he's dead." Joey hissed.

"Joey...I'm just not sure. I didn't call the cops, I thought I could handle it on my own. Oh Joey! I was so scared. I didn't think him, of all people would-"

"I know sis." Joey pulled her into a hug.

"When do I get to go home?"

"Mai's having your stuff put in our house for now. We have some clothes packed. Duke had some people from the police force help." Joey smiled. "I can sign you out tonight. Do you want me to?" Serenity nodded. "Okay. I'll be right back." Joey left the room.

"Yami?"

"Yes Yugi? What would you like?" Yami looked at Yugi worried.

"I just wanted to know...when can I get out of here?" Yami laughed, "What's so funny?" Yugi cocked his head in confussion.

"Well I just thought it funny that's all."

"Why?" Yugi confused looked out the window and back at Yami.

"Well...you just got out of surgery a few hours ago, well maybe a day now, and you want to go home. You've always been like that." Yami grinned and patted Yugi on the head. Yugi chuckled and tried to sit up. He once again failed and tried to move his legs. Still no response. He gave up with a sigh.

"Why me?" Yugi moaned tears forming in his eyes. "I know it seems selfish and stupid but why me?"

"Yugi it's not selfish. You didn't deserve this. Neither did Serenity," Yami looked at the curtain.

"Serenity? Serenity! How is she?!" Yugi asked frantically.

"She's fine. Don't worry aibou."

"Damn it all!" Yugi cursed.

"Are you hungry?" Yami asked, "I can go get something from the caffeteria."

"No. I'm okay." His stomach growled. Yami laughed and so did Yugi. "I guess I am a little hungry." Yami came back with two trays. Yugi gobbled down the first and what Yami didn't want Yugi ate.

"A little hungry?" Yami asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Okay. Very hungry," Yugi leaned against the pillow, "I'm tired now."

"Okay aibou. I'm going to go get some sleep too."

"Stay here."

"I don't need to. You have a friend here." Yami pulled the curtain open and Yugi's eyes met Serenity's.

"Yugi!"

"Serenity!"

"Oh my God! I'm so sorry about-"

"Don't be. It wasn't your fault. What do you say we get some sleep?" Yugi asked.

"I can't Yugi. I'm leaving tonight. I'm sorry," she frowned.

"No, that's okay. I want to get out of here as much as you do. I understand. Can you stay here with me until I do fall asleep? We both could use a friend." Yugi looked at Serenity.

"Sure," she smiled and pulled a chair up next to Yugi's bed. Joey came in with her clothes.

"It'll be a while before we can sign you out but I brought you something to wear other then a hospital gown."

"Thanks Joey. I'll be right back Yugi." Serenity went to change in the bathroom. Yami had long since left with a smile planted on his face.

Joey sent a smile to his best friend and left saying, "I'm sure you'll walk again."

"Thanks." Yugi looked at the bathroom door waiting for Serenity. She stepped out in pink pants and top with white running shoes and her hair tied up. She walked over to Yugi and took a chair from the corner. She sat down by his bedside and placed a hand on his bed. He put his hands on his shoulders and began to rub them.

"Here. Let me," Serenity began to massage his shoulders taking away the tension built up in them. "I'm afraid I can't get the knots in your back."

"That's okay," Yugi closed his eyes as his shoulders relaxed. Soon his whole body was relaxed and he felt her hands as they left his shoulders. He opened his eyes and looked into Serenity's brown ones.

"Would you mind if I...held your hand?" she asked blushing. He nodded his head no and closed his eyes. She began to sing a song.

"What's that?" Yugi asked, his eyes still closed.

"It's a song Joey taught me when we were little. He always said sing this if you were scared or wanted to make someone feel better," she went right back singing the song. Her singing voice was beautiful. Yugi opened his eyes and watched as her lips danced with each word. The melody soon put him to sleep. Her own song made her sleepy and she fell asleep, her head resting on Yugi's chest.

"Look at that," Mai said to Duke, "I don't think they need our help."

"I have to agree." Duke replied. Joey walked up to the door and was about to go in when Mai shook her head no.

"Why?" Joey asked.

"Look at them Joey," Mai had a satisfied smile on her face, "Who knew something so grand would come out of a tradegdy like this."

Joey cupped her chin in his hand, "Yeah who knew." They shared a kiss.

"Geez, get a room!"

"Oh shut up Duke!" Mai snapped, "We're not the guy one's are we?"

"Sure. Rub it in!" They shared a laugh.

"Let's leave them for a while. We can leave when Serenity wakes up."

D.A.P: Had to put some romantics into it! Come on people! I had to! Plus that's a really good ramantic scene between the two, not together but romantic and leading up to the date which has to be changed. LOL!
