Chapter 9

Kagome and Ether laughed as they both walked through the mall. It was Sunday and they had the day off. Ether pointed towards a clothing store and they headed over. They didn't spend much time in the clothing store, but they went to a jewelry store next. Kagome wanted to find a locket that was sort of like Ethers, so it would seem like they had been sisters for a long time or something. That and Kagome wanted to be closer to Ether.
“When's your birthday Ether?” Kagome asked, she hadn't noticed the date when she had glanced at Ether's file.
“It's in one month,” she mumbled. `Twelve years after mom's death.' She thought terribly depressed.

* Flash Back*

Ether laughed as she ran about the park, her aunt watching over her, it was the start of springtime and everything was in bloom. Her aunt had sad eyes, as if she knew something bad had or would happened. “Aunty, when is mommy going to get here? It's my birthday!”
“Your mommy is in the hospital right now Ethy, but we can go visit her later.” She said with a small sad smile. She felt hurt to be lying to such a sweet girl. They wouldn't be able to visit Cassandra because she had been placed into critical care. Brigit winced slightly, her Irish green eyes still misted over with sorrow. Cassandra had a rare disease that only affected certain demons in the world; the disease was so rare that there wasn't even a cure for it yet, only the hope that the ill person would be strong enough to fight off the disease and get better. She frowned, Cassandra was one of the strongest people she knew, Cassandra should have been better by now. Brigit sighed softly, then again when Cassandra had found out that the love of her life was still married, much if not all of her strength had left her. But then the birth of Ether had brought back a little of that lost strength.
Ether grinned and laughed as a butterfly landed on her nose, she went to gently shoo it away when her aunt's cell phone rang. She stopped, a sudden foreboding feeling filling her body. She shivered as her aunt flipped open her phone and answered it. She paled as her aunt grew quiet and started to cry.
“Aunty, what's wrong?” she asked softly, reaching out to touch her aunt's leg, the only place she could reach because of her short height.
Her aunt knelt and scooped Ether up into her arms. “Ether…I'm afraid to say this, but your mother.” She stopped, choking back a sob. “Your mother…died a few minutes ago.” She felt the tears well up inside and fall like rain down her cheeks.
Ether felt time freeze as she realized what her aunt was telling her. Her mother had died on her birthday, had left her on the day they should have been together. Her mother had promised to be with her, to never leave her!
She felt her mind go into turmoil as the thought ricochet back and forth in her mind. She growled and pushed away from her aunt. “You're lying!” she cried out in pain and sorrow. She clutched at her head as she stumbled back, her anger and hurt welled up inside of her as she tried to deny what she was being told. Her eyes went wide as rocks were lifted into the air. She didn't see the rocks though; her eyes had gone wide and blank as she cried heavily, clouding over with red streaks as her youkia half took over.
Brigit didn't know what to do. Ether was doing things that she had never seen before and she couldn't even touch the young girl without being hit by one of the rocks. “Ether please, stop this!” she cried out as the rocks starting whirling in the air.
Ether's eyes snapped up. Rage, sorrow, pain, and unbelieving reflected out of those fading red, golden orbs. She looked at her aunt, and something snapped inside of her, after that she fainted from exhaustion.
* End Flash Back*

Ether sighed softly, a few months later after her mother's death, her aunt had died from a car accident that involved fire, explosions, and gunshots. She had been able to control her rage and anger then, but barely…after that she never really felt she had a reason to be mad anymore, she was alone and there was nothing she could have done about it.
Ether shook her head to clear away the depressing memories. She was with her sister now; she had to enjoy this time with her sister. Ether smiled warmly towards Kagome, who was looking over all the lockets the store had. Only one seemed to have any resemblance to Ether's and that was the one that Kagome bought. It wasn't cheap, but Kagome had said she wanted it and would pay for it happily.
Kagome looked over her new locket. It had a dragon on it, but it was an Asian dragon, not a western dragon. She sighed and shrugged, oh well, it was a dragon locket and she liked it.
Ether glanced at Kagome and her new locket. She smiled; it made her a lot happier to see that Kagome cared about her, enough to buy something expensive just so they had something that brought them closer.

They spent several hours at the mall; they even had lunch there. But by the time it was turning dark, the two sisters were happily walking up the steps and into the house, only to run into Inu-Yasha. He was sitting, dog style, on the couch waiting for them to return.
“Inu-Yasha, what are you doing here? We were going to return in the morning.” Kagome said exasperated (They came home on Friday and it was Sunday evening).
Inu-Yasha cursed softly. “Sesshomaru showed up and kept pacing around and asking me when you two would come back, it was starting to bug me. So I thought I would come here for the night.” He was glaring at Ether slightly, as if it were her fault that Sesshomaru had showed up and had bothered him.
Ether shrugged and took her bag of new things, which consisted of a new shirt and a sketchpad, to her room. She wanted to seem like she didn't care, but she did. She was ecstatic that Sesshomaru had showed up and had asked when she would return. It made her feel wanted, something that she had forgotten until she came to live with the Higurashi's.
Kagome quickly went up to her own room to put her new skirt and candy away in her bag. The candy was for Shippo of course. Inu-Yasha followed her closely.
Inu-Yasha inhaled silently, trying to take in all of Kagome's scent without her noticing. He smiled and had to hold himself back from wrapping his arms around Kagome to inhale deeper. She smelled like wild strawberries and the morning mist over a field of flowers, not a bad combination for her. He pushed the door closed behind them.
Kagome looked behind her when Inu-Yasha closed her door. “What're you doing Inu-Yasha?” She asked hesitantly, just noticing the hungry look Inu-Yasha was giving her.
“Kagome…you smell so good.” He murmured, stepping forward, reaching out to touch her hair gently. At this point they were about a foot apart.
Kagome blushed and tried to take a step back, only to fall backwards onto her bed. She felt her blush turn brighter as Inu-Yasha stepped closer. Kagome sat up and tried to scoot away. “Inu-Yasha, what are you doing?” she whispered nervously.
Inu-Yasha snapped out of his daze slightly and sat down slowly next to her. “Kagome…I honestly don't know.” He whispered in reply, his breathing was irregular as he looked over Kagome's small frame. It was nicely curved, and it had a beauty that Kikyo would never have, it was the beauty of joy and love.
Kagome felt her heart beat race as she heard his quick breathing, her cheeks turned crimson as his eyes slid over her form and then stopped at her lips. She fought not to lick them.
Before she could say or do anything, he pulled her into a tight embrace and kissed her deeply, without even a thought of being gentle. She gasped and felt something move into her mouth. It felt around her teeth and it caressed her tongue. She moaned and her eyes closed from the feelings that shot through her body because of that kiss.
Inu-Yasha didn't know why he had kissed her so suddenly, actually he did. Her scent had been driving him crazy and he had wanted to taste her to see if her taste would match her scent. It had and it made him want to taste all of her, not only her mouth but also her skin. He left her mouth and nipped very gently, so his fangs wouldn't pierce her skin. He smiled against her neck as he heard and felt the groan that emitted from her throat.
He was about to move lower towards her breast when a knock on the door interrupted them. He pulled back, angry because of the interruption and with himself for losing control of his body like he had.
Kagome was still very red in the face when she walked over to the door and opened it slightly; she heard the window open behind her. “Yes?” She asked with a smile.
“Mom says dinner will be ready in a few minutes,” Sota said, not looking up from his GBA-DS.
“Ok Sota, thanks for telling me.” She watched as he stumbled slightly down the stairs and then back into the living room where Ether was reading. Kagome sighed and turned back into her room, only to find Inu-Yasha gone and her window open. She shook her head and rubbed her cheeks, which were still a bright shade of a cherry.

Dinner went by fast, Inu-Yasha didn't say anything and as soon as he put his plate in the sink, he left to go sleep on the roof. Ether picked up the rest of the plates and took them to the sink; she figured she would start helping out while she was around. She started to hum an old song her mother had taught her when she was just a little baby.
“That's pretty, where did you learn that?” Sota asked, as he placed his own dish into the sink.
Ether smiled. “My mum sang it to me when I was really little, when I was three, she taught me the words.” She frowned as she pulled up the words from her memory.
“Could you sing it?” Sota asked, scrubbing at his own dish.
Ether laughed softly. “If you want me to. It's a lullaby.”
Sota shrugged, he just wanted to hear Ether sing. She sounded really good when she hummed.
Ether closed her eyes, stopping her scrubbing as she picked up the lyrics and tune in her head.
“Hush now
My baby
Be still now
Don't cry
Sleep as your
Rocked by the sea
Sleep and remember
My last lullaby
So I'll be with you
When you dream.”
Her voice was light and soft, lifting and dropping to follow the melody of her favorite lullaby. It was slow and full of emotion. She felt tears well up in her eyes as she remembered the last time her mother had sung that for her.

* Flash back *

Cassandra pulled her daughter into a loose hug, she was feeling weaker and weaker by the day and would go to the hospital in a couple days to try and get something done about it. It was only a weak before her daughter's birthday.
“Mommy, can you sing it for me?” Ether asked in a sleepy voice, her eyes dropping with each passing minute.
“Sing what sweetheart?” Cassandra asked with a soft laugh, she knew what her daughter wanted to hear.
“My lullaby!” Ether said, looking up at her mother with a big smile.
Cassandra returned her daughter's smile and closed her eyes to pick up the tune before singing it. When she began to sing, every note was filled with love and compassion, there was a type of magic woven into every syllable. She sang through twice before singing it in Gaelic. Ether never heard the Gaelic version; it always put her to sleep when the first word in Gaelic was uttered. That was the point really; the Gaelic words were made into a spell that would put even the most restless child to sleep. Cassandra smiled and hummed the lullaby over and over, taking comfort in the old tune she had learned from her own mother so long ago. “I love you my little dragon, my little light.” She whispered, kissing the top of her daughter's head before falling asleep herself.

* End Flash Back *

Ether sighed softly and then looked over at Sota, he was nodding off over the dish he had been scrubbing. It went limp in his hand and started to slide into the sink. “You better go get some sleep silly, you'll drop to the ground if you stay up much longer!” Ether said with a laugh, waking Sota up a little for him to mumble and turn to head back to his room. Ether smiled and finished the dishes, drying them and putting them away. By that time she was extremely tired and headed up for bed, not even caring about a shower. `I'll take one in the morning.' She thought to herself.

Kagome had returned to her room after Ether had taken her plate. She quickly took a shower and changed into her PJs. She turned and sat down on her bed, glaring over at her homework, which she and Ether had barely been able to finish. She shook her head; she was going to need a lot of Ether's help when they were home. She kept her window open as she pulled her covers around her and went to sleep.
Inu-Yasha was watching Kagome secretly as she prepared for bed. He did look away when she was changing and heading for the shower. When she was finally sleeping, he watched over her closely. He watched as her chest rose and fell lightly from the sound sleep she was having, he watched as her fingers twitched from her dream, he longed to be there with her, holding her as he sometimes did back in the feudal times. He groaned softly as he shifted his weight on the branch he was sitting on. He finally gave up on finding a comfortable position and jumped into Kagome's room, only to sit down against the wall and fall into a very light sleep.

Back in feudal times, the great Lord of the Western lands was pacing around the outskirts of the little village his half-brother called home. It was small, but it didn't reek as badly as some human villages did. He sighed and started to walk towards the well. He would wait there until Ether, Kagome, and his brother returned. When he arrived, he started to pace around the well, wishing that time would hurry up so he could scoop Ether up into his arm and then hurry her to his castle where he could have her all to his self…well, he would share her with her newly made friends and Rin, but no one else! He growled as he thought about another male talking to her or getting near her while she was at his castle. If that ever happened, he would rip that males head off, both of them if necessary. Ether would be his and no others. He had examined his thoughts about her thoroughly and had come to the conclusion that he was firstly attracted to her because she showed no fear towards him, even though others did. Secondly, her dragon blood called out to him in ways no other demoness' ever had. Thirdly because she had shown a genuine liking to Rin, and he liked the idea of Ether being a mother to Rin. He had agreed with himself that it would be quite alright to fall in love with this dragoness, especially when she arrived at her seventeenth year of birth. He smiled slightly, at that time; any human blood in her would slowly fade away to only leave her dragon blood. He had done some reading and had discovered that there were no real half-dragons in the world, only full dragons. A human and dragon could mate and produce offspring, but those offspring would become full dragon because of how strong the blood was. He smirked slightly, the other demon lords would not be able to ever say he was weak for falling in love, in fact they might even become a little more respectful because of his choice of a mate. `She will be mine.' He thought to himself one last time before sitting against the well and meditating.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well guess what, this chapter is done and I like it better then the last chapter. I'm thinking about revising the last chapter because, I thought it sucked and I think some readers might agree. Anyway, sorry for all the flash backs, I had to include them, they seemed important.
To explain Ether's age:
Learned song at 3
Went flying at 4 turning 5
Mother died at 5
Is now 16 turning 17
Let's say Sota is 14 turning 15
Kagome is 18 or 19, I haven't decided yet. How old should she be? She has to be older the Ether. So…Read and Review. I want a couple more reviews before I post the next chapter (it's written and ready for typing.) As for my story “Alternate Lives” I'm writing the next chapter, but it won't be up for another week.
